Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

Two weeks ago, we wrote about our invitation to help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World’s original dinner show “Hoop Dee Doo Revue.” Courtesy of Disney, we now have more information about the show, it’s history, and some fun facts you can share at the dinner table to annoy your friends who just don’t get your Disney obsession. While Imagineering has no idea what the new Star Wars movie is about, Six Flags, days before their official announcement has working URLS on their website giving away the names of their new attractions. Based on what we already think we know, we can make some educated guesses as to what each of the Six Flags parks is going to get. I really hate to think that Elitch Gardens is avant garde but it looks like Six Flags is following suit with Giant Loop carnival rides. I thought the whole…

The former is designed to make you lose your sense of the real world, while the latter specializes in helping you lose your lunch! Both have merit and a place in the broader spectrum of the theme park world and serve to flesh out the experiences available to both thrill seekers and immersion lovers alike. Last year (2013) the Rao Family made the trek to one of the best theme parks on the planet, Disneyland, so it was only fitting that this year (2014), we would journey to one of the best amusement parks on…

After the event, Disney announced this week that it will add an extra helping of villains to the Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom this fall — in the form of a $99 dessert party at Cinderella's Royal Table.Thousands of guests crowded the Studios for Saturday's event, and the Halloween dessert party likely will sell out, too. The fresh influx of money is going to go toward the creation of a new entry plaza, Carolina themed dining options and the debut of the largest and fastest gigacoaster, Fury 325.First off, Cedar Fair did an outstanding job for this media event last week. It was evident that a lot of care and attention to detail went into this big reveal. Since the park is closed during the week at this time of the year the only people…

Judging by the blue quilted jacket, it must have been a bit chilly.Zooming in for more detail:and even closer to see the cast member and costume:This previously posted September 1964 image shows the thrilling (and wet) conclusion of this beloved attraction:Getting as close as possible to see the guests' smiles:Follow my…

Back to January 28, 1977 for the thrilling conclusion AND the answer to how I know what the date was. First up is a beautiful shot of Skull Rock Cove. I am a sucker for anything showing this area. Obviously, this is a photo-worthy spot, as it is part of the GAF Photo Trail.A closeup of the Skull. Excellent faux rock work!Moving down the way to Storybook Land, a shot of our 1970's trio in front of Monstro.Zooming in for a closer look at the tags they are wearing. The first shot that was taken shows the Matterhorn, as viewed from Central Plaza.I would surmise that this group must have loved the Jungle Cruise, as it was their first attraction of the day to be photographed. 27 Aug 2014 | 6:51 am
Last week I posted several photographs of characters at Disneyland. Here is another set, some with rather interesting poses for the characters. First up is the Alice in Wonderland characters interacting with guests. The Alice is very engaged with the guests while the Walrus and Mad Hatter are looking for other guests. Next up is the Mouse that started it all, and he is surrounded by adoring fans. Be sure to note the Santa Fe Disneyland conductor coming in to work. Also in the background one of the guests is wearing a neat souvenir hat. The final image is an interesting pose with the backside…
  • Early Frontierland Circa 1956

    26 Aug 2014 | 6:38 am
Two views of early Frontierland. First up is the newly constructed Fort Wilderness up on the hill overlooking the Rivers of America. I wonder what happened to the gate sign? I believe the new version of the Fort has a different sign. The next view is of the friendly Indian village. Note the 1890s telephone and power lines in the background. Also notice how close the railroad tracks run to the village.
  • Two Disneyland Docks

    25 Aug 2014 | 6:54 am
Two snapshots of different docks at Disneyland. First up is a nice view of the Frontierland dock with the Mark Twain arriving. It is interesting that a guest is out on the dock close to the Mark Twain. The photograph shows a nice view of the workings of the Mark Twain. Next up is a view of one of the jungle launches arriving back from the perilous three month tour of the jungle. The launch is fully loaded with guests. Oh how I miss the striped canopies.
  • Souvenir Friday- POP Souvenirs

    22 Aug 2014 | 7:24 am
Today's post features part of my collection of Pacific Ocean Park souvenirs. First up is an employee badge, a costume patch which went on the striped jackets worn by employees, a 1963 season pass that admitted the owner and a guest, a ticket scrip book for the games of chance and skill, and a neat hand colored postcard of the Octopus, Sea Dragon and theming for Mystery Isle. Collecting POP items is interesting as there are hoards of tickets out there. This is due to the final auction included the tickets and other items that were left over.
  • A Mouse, Duck and a Pig Hang Out At A Park

Yes the start to a joke...a mouse, a duck and a pig are hanging out in a park. However, I do not know the finish to the joke, but I can show photographic proof of the characters hanging out in a park. The first image shows Practical Pig meeting his fans. Quite a ruckus is surrounding the Pig and he better be careful or the Big Bad Wolf may get him. Next up is Donald Duck meeting his fans in front of the Main Street Bank. The kids are so excited to meet Mr. Duck. Of course the most famous character is Mickey Mouse. Even the photographer was a little excited and shaky upon meeting Mr. Mouse so…

  • New York World's Fair Panoramas, 1965

    27 Aug 2014 | 12:01 am
I recently found some strange-looking slides from the New York World's Fair, probably taken from around the Fair's end (it closed in October of 1965).They all have a kind of slightly-foggy appearance… it reminds me of the way things look after I've been swimming in a heavily chlorinated pool for some time. But it doesn't necessarily ruin the images. Another thing is that they were taken from the top of the Port Authority building. I have many hundreds of slides from the '64-'65 Fair, but I believe that these are the only examples taken from this vantage point! Here's the first view, looking…
  • Indian Village, 1958

    26 Aug 2014 | 12:01 am
I would love to know what exactly is going on in these photos of the Friendly Indian Village ("FIV") from March, 1958. It looks like all of the teepees are either being completely rebuilt, or at least reskinned and/or repainted. They sure looks strange in gleaming white rather than their more familiar buffalo hide colors. At first I wondered if, perhaps, the FIV didn't even exist until 1958, but here's a link to a 1956 photo that appears to be the exact same location. So there.Moving right along the river, you might be distracted by the meese frolicking in the shallows, or by the Natural…

    25 Aug 2014 | 12:01 am
I have a few lonely, orphan snapshots. Let's put them together so that they can form a family! Just like in a Disney movie.I never get tired of seeing the Submarine lagoon when it's been drained for refurbishment (although it was a little bit disappointing when I was at the park and wanted to ride the subs). There they are, all 8 new-kew-lar powered submarines! How often do you get to see them all at once? They are having their audio-animatronic barnacles scraped off. This one is undated (as is often the case), but the Santa Fe sign on Main Street Station has been replaced by a more generic…
  • Some Crazy Castle

    24 Aug 2014 | 12:01 am
Sleeping Beauty Castle. It's named after her, but it doesn't belong to her! Some kind of licensing thing - I don't pretend to understand it. She probably gets an annual fee, like the one I get from "Major Pepperidge Sock Emporium".ANYWAY, I figured I'd share two photos from slightly different years. Like this first one from August of 1960. It's August, and there's no ice cream vendor in the location just to the right? Sacre bleu! Maybe this is from that short-lived period when all you could get at the park was lentils. "Would you like the large cup of boiled lentils, or the extra large?".
  • Freedomland, June 1960

In Soviet Russia, they had amusement parks such a "Gulag World" and "Proletariat Park". But in America, we had FREEDOMLAND! Here are some photos from June, 1960 - the very month the park opened. This first view was taken from one of the Tucson Mining Company ore cars (aka the sky ride) as is passed over the section of the park known as "The Great Plains". The "Chuck Wagon Snack Stand" has a circle of not-yet-covered covered wagons to provide seating for some folks who prefer to not eat at a picnic table. In the distance, the Borden Dairy Company sponsored "Elsie's Boudoir", which is just…

What does everyone think of the MiceAge article today stating that Fantasy in the Sky is returning on a "limited time" basis as placeholder for the Fireworks while much of the newer Fireworks equipment is taken down for refurbishment and new additions for the 60th? I personally saw Fantasy once or twice but don't remember much (the first show I clearly remember watching is Magic in the Stars) but I just have to wonder if they have any plans at all to revamp the show since it is just being used to essentially buy some time while they do work for the 60th. With this…

I've noticed its line is always super long, rivaling the Peter Pan queue, but I'd rather ride Peter Pan even though it's so short. Am I the only one that's a little underwhelmed by the hype for Alice? I did notice the new effects (they're easy to pick out even though I'd never ridden it before), but I still find Peter Pan more enjoyable. Maybe I just need more time on the Alice ride to be fair.

  • Top 5 Ways to Welcome Fall in Walt Disney World

    Suzannah Mitchell
    14 Aug 2014 | 8:09 am
I know, I know, it’s still summer – it’s still hot – (over 100 here at Walt Disney World!) but I find myself drifting to thoughts of cool autumn breezes, falling leaves, and pumpkins…Okay, maybe some of those things don’t exactly happen here in Florida, but a girl can dream. Believe it or not, “Orlando Halloween” is right around the corner (that’s what we locals call it when Halloween descends upon the area in early August while we’re all sweating in the sun) and that means lots of fun options to get in the Fall spirit. And while I…

Spotted in Disneyland by Disney fan Jill L and shared by the fabulous DizThruBrownEyes (which you should all visit/follow/show some love) – this new bag appears to showcase all the original cartoon-style faces of Disney characters. It is one of the nylon style of bags and the large tote-looking style sells for $268. Wonder if more bag styles will appear and if we’ll get them over here in Walt Disney World soon! Until then, enjoy this sneak peek and thank you again to Jill and Elantrice for letting me share this photo here! I have no idea what the actual name of this print is, but…

For each Pixar feature, his mission has been to create a visually exciting, believable world with appealing…
  • Make Holiday Plans Now for Gaylord Palms ICE! and More

    6 Aug 2014 | 9:21 am
After my recent visit a little further north of the hot Florida sun, the cooler weather got me thinking about the holiday season, so I was thrilled when this announcement about the Gaylord Palms ICE! theme and other Christmas events came through. This year, ICE! will feature The Nutcracker, one of my favorite holiday tales and one with a personal connection – my mother (a former professional ballerina) played the Sugar Plum Fairy for the Boston Ballet many years ago and it’s always been a family tradition to watch or experience The Nutcracker somehow each year. I think The…
  • Imagination By The Cup – Disney And Joffrey Flavors At Home

Now this is the kind of partnership I love. Disney and coffee. Joffrey’s Coffee, which has had a presence at Walt Disney World since 1995 and is now served at many locations on both coasts, is now creating specialty coffee blends based on signature Disney parks and resorts restaurants. But more than just the coffee blends, which I’ll speak about in a moment, I love that Joffrey’s has taken the time and effort to create really unique and fun labels for the different coffee types. There are great descriptions for each type, showing they really know the restaurants they are…

You have no idea when your next visit will be and there’s no new masterpiece of a Disney film to look forward to in the immediate future. What is a Disnerd to do in hard times like these? For four weeks, though, we’re taking the phrase “Finding Disney” and turning it on its head by asking this question: How do you find Disney when you’re in Disney? They’ll run, swim, jump, climb, fly and even zip-line on their quest to defeat Captain Hook. My daughter loves this app. It’s packed full of exciting graphics, challenges to unlock more islands and even stories about her favorite pirates. I rate this app a solid 5 out of 5 Gold Doubloons. “Jake’s…

  • Animatedly Yours: A Whole New Disney Experience

    Alyssa Schulman
    27 Aug 2014 | 7:00 am
If you love Disney as much as I do, you’ll be well acquainted with the emptiness that one might experience when there is a lack of Disney magic in one’s everyday life and the Walt Disney World® parks are over 1,000 miles away. You have no idea when your next visit will be and there’s no new masterpiece of a Disney film to look forward to in the immediate future. What is a Disnerd to do in hard times like these? If marathon-ing all of your favorite Disney movies just isn’t doing the trick this time, the next best thing to being at one of the parks (as I have recently discovered) is to…

Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life   This column is typically about finding those little glimpses of Disney magic in daily routines. For four weeks, though, we’re taking the phrase “Finding Disney” and turning it on its head by asking this question: How do you find Disney when you’re in Disney? Everything experienced on Walt Disney World property has ties to Disney in some way, obviously, but some attractions, atmospheres, and elements permeate with a deeper sense of embodiment for what the Disney name truly means to all of us. Today we’re exploring Disney’s Animal…

  • Using Disneyland Touring Plans and the Lines App

    Natalie Reinert
    27 Aug 2014 | 8:00 am
By Natalie Reinert I was determined to avoid lines at Disneyland as much as I do at Walt Disney World. Serious planning was needed. As a Disney World veteran, there are two things I don’t bother with much anymore: park maps, and extensive planning. I know where everything is, I know when I want to see it, and I know how long I am willing to wait for things (about twenty minutes, generally). I think at this point my feet carry me from place to place without my brain directing them. But for our first (of many, we hope!) Disneyland Resort trips, I knew that I needed to do some extra planning.
  • Animal Kingdom Touring: How a Touring Plan Can Help

    Trista VanderVoord
    27 Aug 2014 | 3:00 am
By Trista VanderVoord I have grown to love all of the parks at Disney World, but the one that took me the longest to befriend was Animal Kingdom. It’s not that I don’t love the theme (what’s not to love about animals?). It’s not that I don’t love the attractions (Kilimanjaro Safaris and Finding Nemo the Musical are two of the best things at any park, in my opinion.) It’s that I’m always feeling the pressure of the time schedule. I just love the gorillas along the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, one of my favorite YOPAs. Animal Kingdom is made up of three types of attractions.

Although Walt Disney World does frequently issue statements about their corporate culture of environmental awareness and ethical trade practices, finding souvenirs that are clearly eco friendly or fair trade does take a bit of looking. As I shopped, three common themes I found were: If you are trying to find non-mass produced, fair trade, and/or eco friendly souvenirs, you can almost always skip the larger shopping locations (The Emporium, Mouse…

The price for the base menu at Victoria and Albert’s is $135 per person.  You can add extras to that very…

Walt Disney was born in Chicago on December 5, 1901 inside of a house that his father built and his mother designed. This small Chicago house was turned into an apartment complex and was all but forgotten. That is, until the founders of the Walt Disney Birthplace Project purchased the house with the intent to restore it to its original hand crafted glory. Today on the show we are joined by Dusty Sage, CEO of MiceChat.com, who is also the executive director of the Walt Disney Birthplace Project. Dusty tells us all about the efforts to raise funds for the house, reviving an antique soda…

Disneyland is experimenting with allowing guests to send their on-ride photo to their smart device. This new system is being tested at California Screamin’ in Disney California Adventure and Splash Mountain in Disneyland. I first saw the new product after I rode California Screamin’ on Monday morning. Multiple area managers were crowded around the regular front line Cast Members who were using iPads to enter guests phone number and send out the photos. The cost of the service is $4.99, but message and data rates apply when sending the photo to your mobile device. The test…

While I personally haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Disneyland Dream Suite, my friend Richard had the opportunity to stay the night in the suite. Here’s his story of the Disneyland Dream Suite: Ugh, I needed coffee. Hours of prize hunting takes its toll and per our routine we were at Disneyland’s gates at least 15 minutes before park opening. It felt odd when I realized everything I owned could fit inside a giant moving truck. It felt even more bizarre to see the truck drive away. After months of discussion and planning, we finally made the move to Seattle. Getting everything packed was bittersweet. There is excitement about the new job and our new home. There is also a lot we will miss from our little farming town in Oregon. The job opportunities were limited in Oregon, but it was pretty neat to have farmers as neighbors. We always had fresh produce and Christmas trees were everywhere. As I sit here surrounded by moving boxes at…

We have a lot of firsts coming up. My son is entering first grade. This will be his first time in public school. And this will be the first time he won’t be in the same school where my wife teaches. Our family will be experiencing a lot of new things as we move from Oregon to Washington and change always comes with its share of uncertainty. The after school pick up seems to be the biggest source of worry. While I can rationally remind myself of the countless times I made it from the classroom to the school bus as a child, it doesn’t do much to lessen my overprotective tendencies as a…
  • Camelbaks Can Help You Beat the Heat and Save Money at Disneyland

    Dan
    4 Aug 2014 | 11:08 pm
During a recent visit to Disneyland, we noticed that several families were wearing Camelbaks, the water filled backpacks that are often popular with hikers and bicyclists. At first, the idea of bringing a Camelbak seemed excessive. Does anyone really need (or want to) carry that much water with them at Disneyland? But as the day wore on and the temperature continued to rise, I couldn’t help but think that this was a brilliant idea. From a cost perspective, you would be amazed at how much you can spend on drinks during a hot day. When we got home, we added up the cost of buying drinks…

A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…

If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…
