  • What are the world's most underrated attractions?

    Theme Park Insider
    21 Jul 2014 | 12:05 pm
By Robert Niles: Monday Top 10: This week we give some attention to attractions that haven't gotten much from Theme Park Insider readers. These are attractions that have earned a high average reader rating from those few who have visited them, but just haven't been rated that often by Theme Park Insiders. For the most part, that's because these rides and walk-through are found at parks in non-English-speaking parts of Europe and Asia. But you'll find a couple of selections this week from American parks that don't crack the top 20 for annual attendance, too. If you've experienced some of these…

  • Pirates of the Caribbean V Announced by Disney

    John Frost
    23 Jul 2014 | 3:08 pm
No matter how hard we try to escape, they drag us back in. Earlier today the Disney Insider blog announced that a new Pirates of the Caribbean film is coming. Of course, we had this news back in June along with the expected title: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” It’s expected to open July 7 in 2017. No further details were given, but if you read between the lines, it’s clear the Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush will reprise their roles of Captain’s Jack Sparrow and Barbossa respectively. What other characters from the Pirates series would you…

A new biographical look at the life of Walt Disney has been rumored to be in the works for a few years now. PBS and American Experience have now revealed that “Walt Disney,” a new four-hour, two-night film that explores the life and legacy of America’s most enduring and influential storytellers, will premiere in fall 2015. Disney’s Magic Band and the related MyMagic+ and Fastpass+ are just three elements of a skunk works type division charged with creating Next-Gen experiences for guests at Walt Disney World. Just how revolutionary are these changes? One Tampa Bay Tribune business columnist has gone so far as to claim they’re the future of retail and dining experience everywhere. Disney’s Magic Band system of wireless wristbands, each one tied to a guest’s credit card account, and many guests never pull out their wallets to spend money. They just tap their wristbands on a sensor. Forget the…
  • Maleficent Crosses $700 Million at Box Office

    23 Jul 2014 | 1:02 am
“Maleficent” is rolling in the green. The Angelina Jolie led dark fairy turned good retelling of Sleeping Beauty story has crossed a major threshold at the global box office. The film has now taken in over $700 million internationally. That’s Disney’s second release of 2014 to hit that mark, “Captain America: The Dark Soldier” did it in the first half of the year. Domestically, the film has only reached $228.8 million, a bit low if you ask me. But it has been a very weak year at the box office. Something I’m sure Disney and Marvel hope…

Oh wow. Talk about busy month! With the release of The Black Door on 11th July, I have been manic with organising reviews and publicity. Sadly the publicity bit doesn’t seem to be going so well with local news being far from interested. (Apparently the market is flooded with contemporary / erotic romances, especially since a certain book is about to release it’s movie.) • Paper ride-reservations tickets return to the Magic Kingdom, for the Anna and Elsa meet-and-greet

    23 Jul 2014 | 11:24 am
By Robert Niles: Well, it didn't take long for Disney to bring back the equivalent of paper Fastpasses. Six months after ditching the old ride reservation system in favor of Disney's new online Fastpass+ system, paper ride-reservation tickets made their return to the Magic Kingdom today. It's not exactly the old Fastpass system, and it's only for one attraction. Starting today, for what's called a limited time test, Disney distributed paper return-time tickets to guests wanting to wait in a standby queue for the Anna and Elsa meet and greet.Today they're handing out return times for Anna and…

By Jeff Elliott : Cave of the Winds (Colorado Springs) – I have an idea. Why don’t we just dispense with the safety harnesses and the cables and all of that and just shoot people out of a canon and into a slightly dampened sponge at the bottom of the canyon? I chose this video because it was the only one I could find where they bleeped out the profanity. But I wonder how well the profanity echoes in that canyon. For a place that doesn’t even have an amusement park within an hour’s drive, TERROR-Dactyl is really letting the visitors have it in the teeth… Tivoli Friheden (Denmark) –…
  • Looking back at a colossal history for Magic Mountain's Colossus

    22 Jul 2014 | 10:24 am
By Jacob Sundstrom: At 125 tall, no one has used the word “colossal” to describe Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Colossus for quite some time. The “racing” wooden roller coaster hasn’t (regularly) raced in God-only-knows how long and its popularity has waned in recent years. In truth, I can’t remember a time when Colossus was anything more than an afterthought on a visit to the Valencia theme park; that’s about eight years ago now. It’s hard to imagine a time when Colossus was the tallest and fastest roller coaster; just a sign of how much the roller coaster business has changed…

Flower from "Bambi" has made a rare appearance at the Park in this August 1963 photo. The little girl at right is doing her best to keep her distance from the friendly Skunk. This contemporary comparison view shows that what was once Gepetto's Clock Shop is now The Enchanted Chamber: Also note the addition of the Sleeping Beauty statue. Definitely looks like it belonged there since day one.Follow my Daveland updates on Twitter and view my most recent photos on Flickr.See more Daveland Disneyland character photos at my main website.

    Dave DeCaro
    22 Jul 2014 | 5:00 am
Today quietly marks the 50th anniversary of one of my favorite (albeit somewhat strange and twisted) films, Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie." Once it was done, Universal seemed to know that they had a box office turkey on their hands, and did their best to give it a broad appeal. This ad truly reeks of desperation. The production got off to a bad start when its leading lady, Grace Kelly, decided to back out.Her replacement, Tippi Hedren, required a lot of one-on-one coaching with Hitch himself to make sure she didn't flop in the very complex role that she was playing. Typically, Hitch allowed his…

At Daveland, you just never know what I am going to post. Today's images are 1980's WDI documentations of a toilet from Club 33. Located in the women's restroom, this Victorian-style piece is probably one of the fanciest toilets I've ever seen. Whether this is an original piece from the Club's opening or something that was added later on, I have no idea.A recent photo (not taken by me!) of this piece from inside the Club:It will be interesting to see if this survived the remodel. Here is the concept art of how the new Grand Salon dining room is to look:The Jazz Lounge, built above the French…

Before seeing Cher at the Anaheim Honda Stadium, we stopped at the Disneyland Resort's Grand Californian Hotel for dinner at the Napa Rose.Although the Grand Californian is a huge facility, because of its Arts & Crafts design, the space seems very warm and approachable. The knick-knacks throughout the lobby and in the display cases are worth a second look. And there are the windows for Club 33 members.Merchandise, merchandise, merchandise. I guess they are attempting to clear house of items with the old logo before the ones with the new (gasp) logo are introduced. Here is the new logo. Ta-da!

  • Banana Train Pacific Ocean Park

    23 Jul 2014 | 6:00 am
Three pictures of the Banana Train Ride at Pacific Ocean Park. The slides are all dark so I lightened them up which of course affected the image quality. But these pictures are very rare. First up is a train coming into station with a large waterfall in the foreground. Another view of one of the trains and the neat jungle theming. Final image is of the interior of the cavern with a neat waterfall and some black light effects. Bummer this slide was so dark.
  • Pacific Ocean Park Fisherman's Cove and Flying Dolphin

    22 Jul 2014 | 6:00 am
Two views of attractions found at POP. First up is the New England section of the Fisherman's Cove. You can see by the restrooms are George and Martha. Quite a crowd at the park on the day these photographs were taken. The next image is of the Flying Dolphin, later repainted and named the Mahi Mahi. A large ride of which only six were manufactured, the sensation of flying while on the ride was very realistic. When the pier was eventually razed, tugboats were used to pull this structure into the ocean.
  • Pacific Ocean Park Ride Views

    21 Jul 2014 | 6:00 am
Three different views of rides at Pacific Ocean Park. First up is the Sea Spin ride which was the same ride found at carnivals and other amusement parks. The action in this photograph is neat but the theming was minimal. Note the Sea Serpent coaster in the background. Next up is the exit to the Davy Jones Deep Sea Locker. I wonder where this sign lives?

Or if you were part of the festivities, you would have this pass to get you inside the park. One…
  • Even More Pacific Ocean Park Fountains

    16 Jul 2014 | 7:14 am
Even more views of the fountains at the entrance. The first image features another shot of the dapper guests coming into the park over the elevated sidewalk. The shell fountains on the walls are a great touch. This image shows a seal in the fountain area. I would believe this practice did not last long, but would have added a great touch to liven up the fountains. The depth of the pool does not appear to be the same depth as the Sea Circus, so I believe this is not from inside the park.

Here's three more fun snapshots from the early 1970's, starting with this oddball shot taken during a performance by the Disneyland Band. Maybe the photographer wanted to include the two servicemen who are fuzzily visible just above that blonde lady's head. There's the Haunted Mansion! Even after all these years I can't get over how wonderful that building looks - beautiful, and convincing in every detail. If I was a ghost, I would want to live there. It's always fun to find an unusual view, like this one, taken aboard one of the Horse Drawn Streetcars. I love the craftsmanship that went…

    22 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
Man, it drives me koo-koo crazy when I find a big lot of Disneyland slides, only to find that a large percentage of them were taken in one go, either during a ride on the Mark Twain, or on the Jungle Cruise, or, in this case, aboard a Storybook Land Canal Boat. In a lot of 35 snapshots, 12 of them are from that ride. Don't get me wrong, I love the ride! I just don't need so many pictures of it.Anyway, I am attempting to put them more or less in the order in which they would be viewed if you were along for the journey. I think that cute little building up on the hill with the flagstone path is…

It would be hard to not take a picture of the view below, as our Skyway bucket emerged from the darkness of the interior of the Matterhorn into the brilliant future, with Monorails and "atomic" submarines. Very atomic! From ground level, things look pretty mellow. One would never know that in the depths of the ocean there would be the ruins of Atlantis, a giant squid fighting a killer whale, mermaids, a sea serpent, and all manner of other wonders to behold!"Major Pepperidge, why are you including this photo of Schweitzer Falls?". Well, that's a good question, Billy. You see, sometimes…

Little did Walt Disney know that by 1987, almost 75% of all Americans would live in forced-perspective Bavarian castles. I would say that that's ironic - except that I don't know what "ironic" means. The remaining 25% of Americans spent most of their free time clinging to the sides of mountains.

One lady was quoted about how the Rivers of America where being drained to preserve the future for her children. Well my current job is closing their offices in March and I thought what the heck I'll apply for a position in the Disney offices. I got an email back stating I was on non rehire status. Really? 20 years later... it's not like I stole from the company. Anyways my question is, is there anyway to get this lifted so I can at least have the chance to apply and interview for a job? Should I go to the casting office with something prepared? Any help will be appreciated! Amanda

  • Review: Espresso Gelato “Affogato” in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion

    Wendy
    21 Jul 2014 | 11:05 am
We’re in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion, and that means it’s GELATO TIME!!! Unless, of course, it’s pizza time, but for now we’re just going to focus on the sweet stuff :). Italy’s simple Gelato Stand is located just before you enter the Pavilion coming from Germany. Gelato Stand We’ve enjoyed grabbing Gelato Ice Cream Sandwiches during a stroll or two around World Showcase, and you can always get a scoop of your choice of gelato in a cone or cup. Gelato Selections But there are some additional items on the menu as well. For instance, the Coppa Delizia pretty much rocked our world.

I never like to peg myself into any one blogging ‘niche’, as I’ve written about many times here. I’m not a mom blogger, I’m not solely a Disney blogger or even Orlando blogger. Over my 5 years here at Zannaland, I’ve still never found exactly the “one thing” I should stick with. I began Zannaland to share my thoughts on my personal history of coming to Walt Disney World as a girl through adulthood, which morphed into covering new things to do and merchandise of interest at Walt Disney World. My friends’ house had a great view of the town’s fireworks display from their back deck, so all we had to do was sit down and enjoy! I did notice that something was missing. While the display was an impressive sight and had a variety of fireworks, there wasn’t really any plan to the show. One shot went up. BOOM! Another shot went up. BOOM! Oh – here’s a change of pace - two…

We have been vacationing to Florida for the past seventeen years; visiting Universal Orlando Resort on each trip. During this time, it had never occurred to me to purchase an annual pass. After all, annual passes are more for those people who live close and can visit many times in the same year, right? I couldn’t have been more wrong. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered the potential savings of purchasing an annual pass for Universal. The annual passes can be a money saving…

  • Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination

    Carrie
    9 Jul 2014 | 10:00 am
My absolute favorite part of the Walt Disney Family Museum is their ginormous “Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination” model in the last room. I think it might be Patrick’s too, because he took more than a hundred photos of it on our visit last month. If I stick all of these in the already-picture-packed next installment of my Walt Disney Family Museum Weekend Getaway trip report, it might break your eyeballs. So here is a separate post devoted entirely to Patrick’s photo tour of that 12-foot model. Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination was designed to capture his…
  • New Trip Report: Weekend Getaway at the Walt Disney Family Museum!

    1 Jul 2014 | 10:00 am
I thought you guys might like a trip report on our entire long weekend in San Francisco to see the Walt Disney Family Museum. It’s not all non-stop Disney, but it might give you some ideas of sights to see when you’re in the Bay Area visiting the museum yourself. We wanted a whole day to spend at WDFM, so on our first travel day we decided to check out a different museum, Filoli. This was the main estate of the family that owned the gold mine across the street from my childhood home in Grass Valley. It was one of those places I’d always heard about but never seen, and now…

Last weekend, I took Patrick to San Francisco on a birthday trip to the Walt Disney Family Museum to see the exhibition MAGIC, COLOR, FLAIR: The World of Mary Blair. I intend to do a full trip report on the experience for those who’ve been thinking about visiting the museum, including lots of photos of the permanent collection (which now allows photography!) and our experience at the Marc Davis exhibition (which doesn’t). But since the Mary Blair exhibition is only there through September 7, 2014 and you know how long it takes me to finish these things, I want to do a separate…
  • Why You Should See “Muppets Most Wanted”

    Carrie
    20 Mar 2014 | 10:00 am
When the Muppets got rebooted (again… sorta) in 2012, I wrote a post urging you to go see the movie twice because I’d spent my own first viewing peeking through my fingers in terror that Disney was about to ruin a beloved franchise. It took a second, more relaxed viewing to just let go and enjoy the ride. I also urged you to support the movie so that Disney would make another instead of returning to the wretched-TV-movie formula of the previous decade. And apparently my post worked, cuz they made a sequel! And it’s coming out tomorrow! And you should all go see it!!! Maybe…

On Sunday, Patrick and I joined 698 other hardy souls who braved rain and butt-fatigue to view the 86th annual Academy Awards arrivals from bleachers along the red carpet. About half of our fellow “bleacher creatures,” (as proclaimed by many a homemade T-shirt) were winners of a People magazine contest. The rest of us had won an assortment of other contests—Patrick and I halfheartedly entered after being chatted up by Motion Picture Academy Museum reps during last year’s awesome CicLAvia walk from Mid-City to Downtown LA. Not only had I forgotten about it, I actually…

    disneydose@gmail.com (DisneyApprentice)
    19 Jul 2014 | 10:43 am
We’re back from the grand reopening of Club 33 in Disneyland New Orleans Square. Over the last six months, the club has undergone a huge renovation completely changing the style and theme. When we first broke the story of the renovation a year ago, the scope and effect of the project was completely unknown. This project has completely changed the look and feel of New Orleans Square, with the closing of the Court of Angels and the recent addition of huge windows into the area. Regardless of your opinion of the newly redesigned area, you must accept that there has been a big change.

    Dan
    22 Jul 2014 | 11:38 am
What is the biggest adventure you have ever taken with your children? A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…

If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…
  • Portland Makes the List of Top 50 Swim Cities In America

    18 Jul 2014 | 12:42 pm
There isn’t a whole lot to do in our little farm town, which is both good and bad depending on your perspective. On one hand, it is nice to live away fro the city where it is much quieter and where traffic is never an issue. On the other hand, making plans for weekend activities usually involves a long drive. One of the neat things our town does have is an aquatic center which offers swim classes and recreational activities for the city’s residents. My son took swim lessons for a couple years and, as a parent, it was fun to watch him grow in his swimming abilities. I still…
  • A Truck in a Can? Toy State’s Hot Wheels Energy R/C is Portable Fun

    14 Jul 2014 | 11:19 pm
I have been trying to limit the amount of screen time for my son, but I had to accept my shortcoming as a parent whenever his tablet is around. It is just plain convenient to let him watch a movie or play games on the tablet while in the car. And lately, we have had to run a lot of errands on weekends to prepare for our move. Without something to play with, my son would be really bored waiting while we do boring things. We decided to buy a new mattress before leaving Oregon so that we could still benefit from the state’s zero sales tax. Instead of using a tablet as a babysitter, I gave…

I never thought Seinfeld would make me feel old. There I was at lunch, making a reference to the infamous George Costanza wallet, and all I got in response were blank stares from the interns. I suppose many of them were still in Kindergarten when the show went off the air. I was trying to sell the interns on the value of carrying around less stuff. Several of the interns had a laptop, tablet and phone with them. I was in the same boat. My own computer bag had become a Costanza wallet of sorts, with two laptops, a tablet, and two cell phones. My aching shoulder was the main reason why I…
