Since I first covered this increasing popular venue in 2012, I am still amazed how in just two short days, Friday October 31st and November 1st of how much fun can be had where you can drink, eat, mingle, enjoy entertainment and fireworks, all while strolling the causeways around the Swan and Dolphin’s beautiful Crescent Lake. Disney characters are world-renowned, recognized by everyone. They are famous for their extended families, Nieces, Nephews, and Uncles. There are Mickey’s nephews, Morty and Ferdie, Daisy Duck’s Nieces April, May and June, Minnies Nieces Melody and Millicent and let us not forget Scrooge McDuck. But perhaps the most famous of the clan are Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Moreover, another fact about the nieces and nephews are no mention of their parents, or history except maybe a brief sentence or two. So a little history of the trio is in order. They began their career in the…

Walt Disney could without any argument be included among history’s greatest legions of Innovator’s, Dreamers and Showmen. Walt had the uncanny ability to know what would work, and was a stickler for perfection. He was also the eternal optimist. No matter what, Walt always had a bright outlook, even during bankruptcy; it seemed nothing could bring him down. Even when his distractors were telling him no, (Walt’s wife Lillian and Brother Roy as Walt planned “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) Walt Disney never wavered a bit, stuck to his guns, and finished his “Dreams” In the end, he…

In August 1997 I paid my first visit to Taliesin West in Arizona. My brother lived briefly in Scottsdale, which was how I happened to visit this school of architecture founded by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. At the time, I had a point and shoot film camera that had a VERY dirty lens. I was experimenting with 3D photography by manually moving the camera from one eye to the other. Not really very exacting, but still kind of cool. Here are a few of those photos brought to life through the miracle of FauxD©.Because of some recent lemons-to-lemonade events in my life I found myself back in…

Welcome to Mickey's Toontown, circa April 2000. The bright colors of Mickey's House are right up my alley. We all had a blast posing inside.Even doing the laundry can be fun with Mickey. The reward at the end: meeting Mickey himself!Another rarity: riding the Teacups!the cups start swirling…with a little help from us, as we furiously turned the inner wheel.Once again I must have handed off my camera; what the heck was I thinking. This shot truly sums up my thoughts on this attraction. On Peter Pan, apparently I completely lost control of the camera, and most likely my friend Arlette had it.

    15 Dec 2014 | 5:44 am
It was April 2000. Our plan was hatched at The Chicken Pie Shop on El Cajon Boulevard, and then it was sealed at the Red Fox Tavern just down the street. Hanging out with my coworkers Arlette and CK1, the three of us were working for a dot.bomb company that was on its last legs. Layoffs were imminent, we had no work to do (because there was no money to print our magazine or fund the tour that CK1 was hired to manage). We were pretty much crying in our beer as we all saw the proverbial handwriting on the wall. We decided the only thing to do was to take the next day off and go to Disneyland.
  • Knott's Ghost Town: Judge Roy Bean's House

    Dave DeCaro
    14 Dec 2014 | 5:28 am
Phantly Roy Bean, Jr. (aka Judge Roy Bean) was an eccentric U.S. saloon-keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas who held court in his saloon which he named The Jersey Lilly, after actress Lilly Langtry. Walter Knott had a replica of the saloon built in 1947, using an old home that was moved from a nearby ranch. The first photo is from a vintage postcard, followed by a September 1955 image. The saloon originally stood west of the Bottle House, where the Indian Trails Stage is today. Visitors were able to order boysenberry punch and root beer inside the saloon. These June…

I am always looking to push the limits of my camera (and myself) by trying new things. Firebreathing Ryan let me know last week that he and his friends were going surfing; sounded like the perfect photo shoot for a Saturday morning! Surveying the waves, the first three were not overly ecstatic about the prospects; they didn't quite match the surf report. Here's the gang getting their boards out of the van. How Spicoli is that?Even after getting the wet suits on and trudging out the boards, the waves had not greatly improved.Still, everyone made a valiant effort to ride whatever waves were out…

    17 Dec 2014 | 6:23 am
The family posing in front of several buildings in Disneyland in 1973. First up is a slightly different angle of the family in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Based upon the clothing, I would say this is a nice summery day. The flags on the drawbridge add a nice color to the image. Next up is the family in front of the Blue Bayou in New Orleans Square. The details of the architecture and iron work have always impressed me. The Blue Bayou is one of the best restaurants in Disneyland with the perpetual twilight being a unique feature.

The two large ships that sailed the Rivers of America in 1973. First up is the older vessel, the majestic Mark Twain heading out from the dock. I like the steam coming out of the stacks as the ship heads out. The next image is of the sailing ship Columbia. Created in 1958 and below decks in 1964, the ship continues to sail around the river.

    15 Dec 2014 | 6:31 am
Tomorrowland in 1973 was one filled with motion and activity. The background to most of the attractions was the mighty Matterhorn mountain. The first image shows Monorail Green passing by the Matterhorn and the line for the attraction. I hope the guest taking a picture hanging out of the window did not hit any trees. The next shot is from the Submarine Voyage dock and shows the Submarine Voyage, the Matterhorn, Skyway, and Monorail Yellow. This image instantly transports me to my childhood and the many hours spent at Disneyland with my family on our annual trip. The third image is also from…

In the mid-1960s, Disneyland sold a collection of souvenirs that were a unique three dimension design. The souvenirs were all flat items, such as postcards, pennants and buttons. The items featured scenes of the park that appeared to be in three dimension. Today I am showing a large button that is 6 inches in diameter. The image is found on a postcard, a pennant with the image inserted into the pennant and this button. The image is a group of the characters in front of the Castle with several Main Street vehicles. I have seen the same souvenirs featuring the characters on Monorail Blue and…

I like the Casey Jones Jr. Sign and the Mermaid on the Chicken of the Sea ship. The color and shapes are fantastic and interesting. Next up is a nice view of the Storybook Canal boats. I am drawn to the bright red hat worn by the cast member.

Today I am posting the first scans from an excellent bunch of around 60 slides from the summer of 1958. Whoever the photographer was, he or she knew what he or she was doing. Some of them are ordinary, but many are super nice! And since there are 60 of 'em, we're going to be enjoying them for quite a while. We'll start where so many Disneyland adventures began; the parking lot and the trams! Painted in sunny blue and yellow, the lovable li'l trams transport guests from the vast sea of cars right to the entrance. I'm not sure I previously noticed the decorative blue "grille" applied to the…

    16 Dec 2014 | 12:01 am
I know most of you come to GDB to see vintage photos of Disneyland, but I like to change things up once in a while! I've mentioned by fascination with the 1939 New York World's Fair on several occasions, and I've shown examples from my rather extensive collection of souvenir pins from that Fair.  Today I'm going to share some more of those.I collect pins because they are small, generally not too expensive, and there is an astonishing variety to choose from. I'm always finding "new" designs, which is part of the fun. These first three are nice heavy brass; You'll be seeing the Trylon and…
  • Walt Disney World, November 1972

    15 Dec 2014 | 12:01 am
Today I'm posting the remaining images from a lot of November 1972 Walt Disney World slides. Plus an extra! While I am woefully unfamiliar with the Florida park, I am guessing that this neat view was shot from the Walt Disney World Railroad; if I'm wrong, please correct me! It's cool that guest were able to get a much closer look at the friendly Indian Village - it almost feels like we could just saunter over and help that guy start the fire. "Need a match, bub?". People love being called "bub"!Meanwhile, over in Adventureland, we are enjoying the pre-show for the Tropical Serenade. This…

It's the World Famous Jungle Cruise! The jungliest cruise on Earth. There goes a naphtha launch, leaving the last dappled rays of sunlight behind as it vanishes into the eternal dusk under the canopy of the rain forest. Wave goodbye!Say, what are these guys doing? Zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, all staring as if they are watching a football game.Oh man, they're watching their pal getting devoured by some lions! That's entertainment, I guess. This scene is an update of an older scene that took place in a much less open tableau.

Christmas is so close I can taste it! (It is sort of pepperminty). It's the perfect time to visit the North Pole. Not the one in the Arctic, the one in Essex County, New York! That's about 60 miles north of Albany. The North Pole was founded in 1949, and it claims to be America's first theme park. Well, OK! I love this shot of the entrance… it is surrounded by that beautiful Adirondack forest. The park was the brainchild of Julien Reiss, a local businessman. Reiss' daughter wanted to visit Santa Claus' summer home, and he decided to build a place for children of all ages. You can see that what…

    17 Dec 2014 | 7:00 am
As I have mentioned many times before, I am a planner, so it should come as no surprise that I begin my Christmas preparations in September.  As is the case with most planners, I develop a list of people for whom I will be purchasing gifts, and alongside each person’s name I write the item I most hope to give them.  Of course, I always jot down a few contingency options in the event that the “perfect” gift proves elusive.  Once my list is complete, I eagerly head to the stores, or my computer, in search of each carefully thought-out gift.  Inevitably, there is at least one…

As a result, we have seen tons of additional, unofficial information, including the following from people who have evidence of things as well as claims of information coming second-hand from parade head honcho Steve Davison: While Disneyland will be getting a variation of ‘Paint the Night’ from Hong Kong Disneyland, it will not likely be called that — current name is unknown.

  • DIY Customization for Disney Magic Bands

Aaah, pure, simple, magical. MagicBands may look like an accessory but they are your key to everything at Walt Disney World Resort. No one likes to have the same accessory as everyone else though, and that’s why customization has become the newest Disney fad! I’ve never been one to match everyone else, so only having 7 colors to chose from for a bracelet everyone is wearing, doesn’t really suit my fancy. There was a small fire in a guest room on the 3rd floor at the Aulani Resort in Hawaii on last Thursday.  The fire was in the middle of the room at a charging station used for remote control batteries for large remote control trucks, Fire Capt. David Jenkins said. The fire started when the unit overheated, that in turn set off the smoke detector which alerted the resort staff. When they got in the room they found the charging unit destroyed and the surrounding carpet was burned, as well as smoke damage to the room. Firefighters arrived at 2:40 pm. The fire was extinguished immediately and…

The first 3 boxes are Chamilias and the last box is the start of my Pandora A few years ago, I started collecting the Disney Chamilia beads. They were mostly silver and fit in well with the rage of these new style charm bracelets. Then the company came out with a Minnie Mouse bow set with a necklace and earrings. I was pretty happy with my collection. I didn’t have them all, but I had a good amount. I wore the bracelets a lot and the charms started to feel heavy and get a little banged up. Like I said, I wore these a lot. Now I was wearing them occasionally and unless I…

  • The Fabulous Sounds of Christmas at Disney!

    Carrie
    2 Dec 2014 | 10:00 am
Every year around this time, I re-post Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A. Christmas music loop for those who don’t have it yet. Having just returned from Walt Disney World, I can confirm that these are all the same songs played on Magic Kingdom’s Main Street, except my versions don’t randomly stop in the middle and skip to the next song. Scroll down and you’ll find MP3s of every song on Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A. Christmas music loop. Happy holidays! Several years ago, MiceAge.com’s Al Lutz posted a complete listing of the songs played on…

Since I’m not going to have time to write a full trip report of our 72 hours at WDW in September, I’ll try breaking up the interesting bits into individual posts. I’ve already covered Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings 2014 Bridal Showcase and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party + Villains’ Sinister Soiree. Today is all about the cake! Because I am the only one cake-obsessed enough to maintain the DISboards’ Official Cake Chatter thread, I like to order a cake each time we go to Walt Disney World so I can post more info and inspiration for that…
  • Throwback Thursday: Halloween at Dick Van Dyke’s House

    Carrie
    30 Oct 2014 | 12:30 pm
Those of you who see this annually, bear with me. I get a lot of questions this time of year about helping decorate Dick Van Dyke’s house for Halloween. It was this crazy fluke that we knew somebody who knew somebody who helped Van Dyke stage his legendary Halloween displays. Dick Van Dyke LOVES Halloween—he says it’s like Christmas for him, and he likes to go all-out to have the most gruesome, over-the-top display on the block. So for five years we had the privilege of being on the team of folks who helped him, er, execute his vision. In 2013 Van Dyke decided to hang up his…

When we were in Walt Disney World last month, we attended Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for the first time in four years, mostly so we could experience the new Villains’ Sinister Soiree: A Wicked Takeover of Cinderella Castle—because if they were charging $99/person on top of the cost of a party ticket that costs $62–$77/person, it must be starring Michael Jackson returned from the grave and feature brand-new Cadillacs as favors, right?! Despite not being a huge fan of character meet-n-greets, parades or stale candy, I was really looking forward to attending the…
  • 2014 Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Showcase Recap

    Carrie
    3 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…

  • Is a New Laptop on Your Christmas List? Ask Santa for the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro

    14 Dec 2014 | 10:13 pm
What is the best laptop to buy for Christmas? This time of year, I get the question a lot. When you’re the “tech guy” in the family, holidays are often spent dishing out gift buying advice. Even my boss approached me for advice on what cell phone to buy her daughter. The cell phone question is more difficult to answer. But when it comes to computers, I usually recommend Lenovo’s Yoga series of laptops. I just upgraded to the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro after using the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 for the past few years. I like the Yoga laptops because they are super thin and…

I used to love it when my grandfather would open the back of his pocket watch and show me how the gears moved inside. Mode Media sent me the Moto 360 watch to review and I was reminded of why timepieces have endured as an accessory for all these years. Timepieces have a certain elegance that make them fashionable, as well as functional, no matter if they hang from a chain or if they are strapped to your wrist. Watches are having a revival lately, thanks in part to an interest in health tracking, but also from just how far the technology has come. Modern digital watches are losing their bulk…

Some of my favorite childhood memories are the times when my dad would take me shooting. Often times, we would head out to a local indoor range. Other times, we would take a trip out to the desert and fire at some targets. I learned a lot about gun safety from my dad and the time we spent together meant a lot. Of all the random things we did together over the years, our time on the shooting range was some of the best opportunities to bond. A simple air rifle is a nice way to introduce your child to shooting, and the Daisy line of products have been around forever. I was driving back from…
  • Chill Ice Kingdom Returns to the Queen Mary for Winter Fun

    Dan
    30 Nov 2014 | 9:05 pm
For most southern California residents, a chill in the air means the temperature has dipped below 70 degrees. A white Christmas is something children only know about from holiday songs. Mittens and scarves are hard to find in stores, but shorts and flip flops are sold year-round. In this midst of this perennial warmth, it seems odd to see families putting on heavy winter coats and to hear talk of an ice slide. But this isn’t crazy talk. The annual Chill Ice Kingdom at the Queen Mary has returned, offering families a winter wonderland created from more than two million pounds of ice.
