The fable of the three little pigs has been told for centuries. It has become familiar to millions since Walt Disney re-told the story in his successful 1933 animated cartoon. Walt kept true to the story in most ways, but he toned down some of the violence a bit from the original tale. Because of Walt and his animators, the iconic pigs and their adversary the Big Bad Wolf, not to mention the famous song “Who’s afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” which helped millions of depression-era folks get by have become an integral part of the American culture. So how did the original tale or fable…

Walt Disney World is so much more than restaurants, attractions, characters and shows. For the really sharped-eyed guest and of course, Disney fanatic, there are realms and realms of visual and audio inputs for the senses. If you listen carefully, you’ll always hear a Disney song from the movies or a classic Disney short. However for me, it is the visual. So many guests just walk around, oblivious to what the Imagineers have placed right in front of them, and hardly anyone gives a second glance. Have you ever wondered what the writings on the crates in front of Min and Bill’s…

Walt Disney has given the world some of the most memorable characters, both animated and real life. From “Alice” from the Alice comedies, Peg Leg Pete, Horace Horse Collar and of course, Mickey Mouse to Captain Nemo, Zorro and many more, the list is almost endless. I decided to choose a “Live Action” character from one of Walt’s most beloved movies, “Mary Poppins” Most movies have a supporting character that is pivotal for the movie’s development and the character of “Bert” is no different. Bert is a Cockney jack-of-all-trades that Mary Poppins uses indirectly in her…

Beer is perhaps one of mankind’s oldest fermented beverages. Sometimes called natures “Perfect Food”, beer has been documented as far back as the 5th millennium BC. Beer is produced from cereals containing sugars, and as ancient man advanced from hunter-gathers to farmers and herdsman and domesticated cereal, the popular beverage began its long history. But the ancient beer did not ape the product we all know today. In the beginning it was more of a gruel, very thick and sweet. It took many thousands of years of trial and error for it to resemble the drink we know today. In fact…

Walt Disney from the beginning has always made it a practice to give back to the community. As far back and 1948, the Disney Company designed the Logo for the “Toys for Tots” program. After his death, the Disney Company continues to give back to the community it serves in many ways. And like Walt Disney Company, the World Chapter branch of the Disneyana fan club continues in this worthy tradition of giving back and making the world a bit better place to live in. On January 13th, the club donated a check of $10,000 dollars to the Walt Disney Pavilion; Children’s Hospital at Florida…

  • Vote of the Week: Are You Priced Out of an Orlando Vacation?

    27 Feb 2015 | 12:58 pm
By Robert Niles: Who much money do you need to afford a Walt Disney World vacation? A reader who works at the resort emailed an interesting piece of information she'd picked up during a recent staff meeting. She wrote that the executive in the meeting said that Walt Disney World's target household income for its visitors is $80,000 a year and up. Given that the median household income in the United States is about $54,000 a year, this report would seem to confirm what many Disney fans have been saying in recent years — that Walt Disney World has become out of reach for many middle-income…

  • More Monorail-mania!

    1 Mar 2015 | 4:00 am
Although I still love riding the Monorail, there is something about the original sleek design that the current one can't hold a candle to. Here's how it looked only a few months out of the gate, circa October 1959. I really miss the cool bubble up top. Anybody out there know why they got rid of it?Best known for its red color, the yellow is pretty impressive, too, as seen in this October 1962 image:Zooming in to see the Monorail name and tire tread design from the Yacht Bar below:See more Daveland Disneyland Monorail photos at my main website.Follow my Daveland updates on Twitter and view my…

I secretly hoped that the gentleman in the hat was Walt, but upon closer examination, I don't believe so.Although Walt wore hats like that, the face and body seem a bit off.Back to our original image, here's the souvenir map on display that guests could buy and hang on their wall at home:Another image from my collection circa July 1960 provides a color image:And here is an even clearer version of what was on display:So much from just one little image!See more Daveland vintage &…

The Carthay Circle Theatre on San Vicente Boulevard in Los Angeles was arguably one of the most famous movie palaces of Hollywood's Golden Age, known for its lavish movie premieres. In Disney history, it is known as the theatre that presented "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to the world. The Disneyland Resort's Buena Vista Street built a scaled replica of the Spanish Colonial Revival marvel that was demolished in 1969.While the exterior evokes the original, Disney California Adventure's Carthay Circle functions as a restaurant, causing the interior to be completely different.Imagineers did a…

When I stepped off the train from my most recent visit to Anaheim, I was totally confused. Where the heck was I? Somebody changed the station on me! Opening in December 2014, this new facility is extremely impressive, and a far cry from the dump that still stands a few blocks away.Certified LEED platinum, the ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) is even more impressive at night.Inside, there are ticket counters as well as retail space and restaurants. At the time of my visit, it looked like they were still attempting to fill the retail space.Kudos to HOK and Parsons…

Two more nice snapshots from the same trip I have been posting the last couple of days. This time the photographer was in Adventureland at the load and unload area at the Jungle River Cruise. First image shows the Ganges Gal being unloaded. Note the kid in the fantastic red shirt (with musical notes) is wearing a yellow Keppy Kap. Next up two Jungle Cruise guides poses for the photographer. In the early days, before OSHA, the Jungle Cruise guides wore sandals to work. The shirts are great especially the red shirt with the bamboo design. The skipper in the color striped shirt looks like Neil…

Two more nice color snapshots from Disneyland. The first view is of the dining area in front of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate ship. This is another great view of the colorful umbrellas used to shade the tables. Note that this image is prior to the construction of Skull Rock. The second snapshot is of the Sleeping Beauty Castle courtyard. Note the colorful information/ticket booth in the left hand side.
  • Disneyland Entrance

    24 Feb 2015 | 5:09 am
Two snapshots of the entrance to Disneyland in color. The first image is of the Main Street Station, Floral Mickey Mouse and the attraction poster fence. Three nice posters are on display, Autopia, Astrojets, and Art Corner. The photographer turned around and snapped a photograph of the ticket booths and information booth at the entrance. I am drawn to the many flags on top of the ticket booths including the orange flag with Mickey Mouse and blue and white flag with the large Gothic D. Also I am drawn to the great design of the information booth.

    GORILLAS DON'T BLOG

  • More Walt Disney World, December 12, 1975

    2 Mar 2015 | 12:01 am
Hey, let's get those "daily blog views" numbers up by visiting Walt Disney World! It works every time. Many people think that Cinderella Castle is taller than the castle at Disneyland, but that is only due to a  trick the Imagineers call "forced perspective". By placing tiny trees next to it, and only allowing small children to stand at the base, the castle looks much bigger. It is, in fact, a mere 11 feet tall."Major Pepperidge, just how many photos of that crummy 11-foot castle do we have to look at?". Only one more today, Grasshopper. You have to admit that this one is very…

We'll probably win the Pulitzer Prize and get to meet President Kennedy and Jackie. While we're waiting for all of that excitement, let's go eat in the air conditioned Red Wagon Inn!What a minute; are there TWO gorillas? And are they wearing red shirts and Tyrolean hats? This just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Well, ladies and gents, ol' Major Pepperidge has been neglecting his scanning duties for far too long. Which means that I am somewhat unprepared on this "Anything Goes Saturday". Again.SO… just because they are sitting on my computer, ready to go, here are the last few images of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair (aka the "Century 21 Expo"), from a batch of stereo slides. They sound fantastic. No visit to the Expo would be complete without a photo of the magnificent Space Needle. I'm sure there must be somebody out there who doesn't like this "Jetsonian" edifice, and if so, I hope I never…
  • Golden Horseshoe Exteriors, July 1958

    27 Feb 2015 | 12:01 am
Loitering outside of saloons is generally frowned upon, but at Disneyland, it's a worthwhile pursuit. The people watching is top-notch.At some point I will stop being amazed at how long the Golden Horseshoe continued to display flimsy cloth banners. A more permanent sign wouldn't be added for many years. Judging by the tri-colored bunting,  Grover Cleveland must have been campaigning here recently. It's the only logical explanation. How many other presidents shared a name with a muppet?Zooming in a little bit, we see one well-dressed dude - maybe he worked with the pack mules? -  …

Now before you die-hard Disney resort fans start protesting, please just keep reading and see if you agree when all is said and done. I began writing this as a caption to a photo I had posted before on Instagram, of a hat-free view of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (of course, then known as Disney-MGM Studios). My thoughts got away from me, and I had soon reached “caption limit” on Instagram, so I copied and pasted what I’d been writing into my “Notes” on my phone. I had never before written a blog post on my phone, save for very short updates about new purses being released while I may have been away from my laptop. These seminars are a fantastic way to explore new tastes or learn more about a favorite beverage. On my recent cruise aboard the Disney Magic I finally decided to experience a beverage seminar for myself. After experiencing the seminar, I can safely say it is a good value and I am here to tell you why.
  • Hollywood Studios AtMousePhere: The Music of Echo Lake

    Claire Nat
    1 Mar 2015 | 5:00 am
By Claire Nat photo by Michelle Micheel The one section of Echo Lake that everyone is familiar with when they enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios is…well…the lake itself! On one side is the boat where you can find Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner, and on the other side is Gertie the dinosaur. However, the Echo Lake area of the park actually stretches back past the old American Idol Experience building and the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. The biggest trouble with the music of the Echo Lake area is that it is often drowned out by the music of the stage shows, musical…
  • The Magic, The Memories, and Merch! February 2015 Photo Report of the Disney Outlet Store

    Derek Burgan
    28 Feb 2015 | 8:00 am
By Derek Burgan Is February already over?! What a month. We got the inevitable yearly ticket price hikes, got the first details on both Star Wars Weekends and the holiday hard ticket parties, saw Big Hero 6 shock the world and take home the Oscar for Best Animated Film, found out Spider-Man would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (YES! YES! YES!) and – most importantly – found out Duck Tales will be returning to TV! It’s a good thing this month is only 28 days because we don’t think we could handle any more (especially since we wasted an entire day on Llamas on…

    Derek Burgan
    28 Feb 2015 | 4:30 am
By Derek Burgan This week’s SATURDAY SIX takes a look at the Six Best Attractions at Walt Disney World. Hot off the heels of our All Star Panel getting together and voting for the Six Best Attractions at the Universal Orlando Resort, it was only natural to take a look across the street and get to the bottom, once and for all, of what the six best attractions at Walt Disney World were. But this is The World after all. The Vacation Kingdom. The most popular theme park resort on Earth. So naturally we had to go big. We contacted 25 experts for Universal? Well we’re getting 50 for…

The moment I saw this dress I knew I had to share because it's pretty, breezy style instantly transported me. Inspired by the new lobby at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort it's tropical feel and traditional design are a classic. The coral palms print against the ocean blues help to create the perfect frock for a date night dinner at 'Ohana. Style it simply with a pair of cute leather wedge sandals, and a Disney Dooney Sketch Leather Crossbody Bag. read more

  • Rare Disney Parks Artifacts at The Story of Disneyland Auction Preview

    Carrie
    23 Feb 2015 | 9:30 am
Last week we attended the preview for Van Eaton Galleries’ upcoming auction, The Story of Disneyland, which features a mind-boggling array of art and artifacts from the Disney parks amassed by a single collector. Patrick had a chance to chat with him a bit and learned that he’s been collecting for 30 years and found a lot of the items in estate sales and by being in the right place at the right time. Now he’s down-sizing in preparation for a move. But what I want to know is, if this is the stuff he’s selling, what treasures must he be keeping?! While most of the best…

In honor of this weekend’s 87th Academy Awards, I’m re-posting the story of our experience on the red carpet at last year’s ceremony after we won a contest at CicLAvia. I still can’t believe we have photos of some of these stars that we took with our own cameras! And now that we’ve finally seen Sherlock, we are SUPER excited to discover that we’re (just barely) in this now-famous photo of Benedict Cumberbatch photobombing U2! Enjoy! On Sunday, Patrick and I joined 698 other hardy souls who braved rain and butt-fatigue to view the 86th annual Academy Awards…

    2 Dec 2014 | 10:00 am
Every year around this time, I re-post Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A. Christmas music loop for those who don’t have it yet. Having just returned from Walt Disney World, I can confirm that these are all the same songs played on Magic Kingdom’s Main Street, except my versions don’t randomly stop in the middle and skip to the next song. Scroll down and you’ll find MP3s of every song on Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A. Christmas music loop. Happy holidays! Several years ago, MiceAge.com’s Al Lutz posted a complete listing of the songs played on…

I’ve already covered Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings 2014 Bridal Showcase and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party + Villains’ Sinister Soiree. Today is all about the cake! Because I am the only one cake-obsessed enough to maintain the DISboards’ Official Cake Chatter thread, I like to order a cake each time we go to Walt Disney World so I can post more info and inspiration for that…
  • Throwback Thursday: Halloween at Dick Van Dyke’s House

    Carrie
    30 Oct 2014 | 12:30 pm
Those of you who see this annually, bear with me. I get a lot of questions this time of year about helping decorate Dick Van Dyke’s house for Halloween. It was this crazy fluke that we knew somebody who knew somebody who helped Van Dyke stage his legendary Halloween displays. Dick Van Dyke LOVES Halloween—he says it’s like Christmas for him, and he likes to go all-out to have the most gruesome, over-the-top display on the block. So for five years we had the privilege of being on the team of folks who helped him, er, execute his vision. In 2013 Van Dyke decided to hang up his…

One of the most amazing features is something you see every day, but rarely think about. Your phone’s screen. Many of the best smartphones use something called Corning® Gorilla® Glass, which is a super durable material from Corning. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest clichés about parenthood, and it remains incredibly true. Whenever someone learns that you are having a child, you immediately hear something about “enjoy sleeping in while you can.” A few times during that first year, I would take a nap in my car during my lunch break just so I could get a little rest. To make things worse, we had been sleeping on the same mattress for about ten years. It was uncomfortable and the entire bed would shake whenever one of us would roll over. I even went in for a sleep study at one point to determine why I wasn’t…

When you are sweating in sunny Orlando, you don’t give much thought to how cold it might be in Seattle. We were enjoying the break from grey skies and rain. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt for the first time in months. It was glorious. Back at home, Seattle had a little snow which had wreaked havoc on the traffic. I read the news reports on my phone and chuckled, glad to be far away from a nightmarish commute. Aside from wondering if there would still be snow when we got home, I didn’t think about the weather again until our plane landed in Washington. Thankful to have our…
  • From Super Cars to the Family Minivan the Chicago Auto Show Has Something for Everyone

    Dan
    15 Feb 2015 | 5:49 pm
It was hard to miss the SpongeBob SquarePants minivan from across the room. The custom Toyota Sienna was painted in the Nickelodeon character’s signature yellow and his goofy grin adorned the hood. The 2015 Chicago Auto Show has a little something for everyone, whether you are a family looking for your next vehicle or an auto enthusiast salivating over the $2.6 million Bugatti Veyron in the supercar section. As a first time visitor, I was blown away by the size of the Chicago Auto Show. It spans more than 1 million square feet of floor space and has hundreds of different vehicles on…
  • With a Bold New Design the 2015 Toyota Camry Redefines the Family Car

    Dan
    7 Feb 2015 | 10:58 pm
The Toyota Camry is one of the most ubiquitous cars on the road. I counted at least fifteen of them during my drive to work the other day. The Camry has been known as a safe and reliable vehicle, but there was always room to advance the design. With the 2015 Camry, Toyota is taking a big step in the right direction, with striking hood lines and a sporty interior that make the Camry stand out from the crowd. My favorite parts of the new design are the sport mesh front grille, LED headlights, and the 18-inch alloy wheels. My son was just happy that I had a red car to test drive, since that…

  • The Disney Difference – Disney with Disabilities

    Leah
    24 Feb 2015 | 10:34 am
When Disney wants to sell you something for an obscene amount of money, they always cite the “Disney Difference.” The extra touch of magic, that peppy smile from the cast members, that further mile they go to make your vacation a truly special one. We Disney bloggers and super-fans like to throw this phrase right back in […]

I’ve talked before about how theme parking is a sport, and often times a contact one. There is the phrase you’ll often hear at Disney, “I’m gonna need a vacation after my Disney vacation!” And, honestly, that’s part of what I love about Disney. I love the thrill of a fast paced vacation where you soak in as much […]

All the cool kids come late to the game. I totally missed the deadline on this one, but it’s villains. How could I resist!? Kill — Cruella DeVille I have a psychologically questionable love of villains. I’ve made this quite clear. I can excuse many an evil spell if they have a particularly mellifluous diabolical laugh. Guys. It’s no secret. I’m a capital F Feminist. Friendly reminder that feminism means economic, social, and political equality of the sexes and doesn’t involve humorless man-haters who think males should be kept underground and used only for breeding purposes like Time Magazine would have you believe. But I digress. I also love Disney. That one should […]

At Walt Disney World Resort, there are so many one-of-a-kind shows, like Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage and Festival of the Lion King, that families with young children can be sure that they will constantly be entertained. But parents of little ones know that sometimes their kiddos get antsy and need a break from schedules, and luckily, simply strolling through the parks can be entertaining in itself. In between all of the full-scale productions, some of the most fun moments can be completely unplanned, thanks to spur-of-the-moment performances throughout all four theme parks. Kids…

  • A message to Disney Interactive…

    Will Blears
    5 Feb 2015 | 7:52 pm
Disney Infinity fans…if you want Tron show your support with hashtag #WeWantTron After the rather shocking news surrounding the interesting and somewhat infuriating release of Disney Infinity’s Sam Flynn & Quorra as digital releases made exclusive for iOS & PC only, it made sense to investigate further as this seemed like a huge mistake on Disney Interactive’s behalf. To do this though, let’s back up slightly, the first information we got of Sam Flynn & Quorra came from no other than a leak within the game it’s self. This alone suggests that Disney…
  • Big News – Disney Infinity Tron Released

    Will Blears
    4 Feb 2015 | 10:44 pm
Update: OK, so John Vignocchi has confirmed that Sam Flynn & Quorra are the 2 final Disney Infinity characters for 2.0. However, when I (and several others) asked him “If the Tron figures are going to be digital releases only, he danced around the question with an indirect answer. To me this suggests that Sam Flynn & Quorra will be coming as physical characters in Disney Infinity 3.0. The question is though, why would they delay the physical figures for so long – thinking out loud here, perhaps it’s because of the length of time it takes to go from planning >…
  • Where is Green Goblin’s Glider?

    Will Blears
    15 Jan 2015 | 3:21 am
You ask… Well, it appears after much confusion from throughout the Disney Infinity community that Disney Interactive simply forgot. Yes, that’s right…I can’t really blame them to be honest though, with a game as big as this, with so many various gadgets and unlocks it’s not hard to imagine that someone would forget one or two items along the way. What’s the solution? Disney Infinity have published on their Twitter page that Green Goblin’s glider will be released in a future update, obviously we hope this update is coming soon as people are beginning…

    13 Jan 2015 | 6:50 pm
It seems Gamestop will be running an exclusive similar to the one which they did last year for Disney Infinity’s Jack Skellington, however this time it’s Rocket Racoon. Gamestop have published a new retail page which is titled “Rocket Racoon Collector’s Edition” you can check it out right here. Before, you get all excited though it’s a bit misleading that they call the figure a “Collector’s Edition” as it’s only the actual display case which is exclusive and unique. The Rocket Racoon figure it’s self is identical to that which…
