But at the Tokyo Disney Resort, Hidden Mickeys aren't limited to the attractions. Tokyo Disney this week has been promoting its culinary Hidden Mickeys. Clara Cluck, that opera singing chicken who first appeared in Mickey’s the “Orphan’s Benefit” in 1934 was one of the many supporting Disney characters that never made it big with the rest of the fab five, i.e. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. Much like Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, Clara made several appearances in the early Mickey shorts, (Much less than the former) and ironically, just like Horace and Clarabelle bowed out of the scene in the short, “Symphony Hour” in 1942. Disney characters are world-renowned, recognized by everyone. They are famous for their extended families, Nieces, Nephews, and Uncles. There are Mickey’s nephews, Morty and Ferdie, Daisy Duck’s Nieces April, May and June, Minnies Nieces Melody and Millicent and let us not forget Scrooge McDuck. But perhaps the most famous of the clan are Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Moreover, another fact about the nieces and nephews are no mention of their parents, or history except maybe a brief sentence or two. So a little history of the trio is in order. They began their career in the…

Last year we went to New York for Christmas and it was so memorable.  When this year, my husband told that we are going to Los Angeles and Disneyland,  I was a little bit sceptical.  I really wanted to get in the Holiday spirit and I wasn’t sure Los Angeles was going to do that. However, I heard that Christmas in Disneyland is beautiful and I was willing to give it a try. Every time before going to Disneyland I question myself is it really worth it: the drive, the crowd and the cost (although, we bought our annual passes earlier this year, it was a LOT of money)… Then,  I…

Last weekend I had the pleasure of venturing out to one of the most magical places on earth – Disneyland. Despite not going to a Disneyland park since my last visit in 1999 to the California resort when I six, I was still incredibly excited and giddy – yes, giddy. Recently the weather in Paris has sucked. It’s currently cold, raining and miserable. Much like England I guess! So, sadly for us when we went last Saturday we were welcomed by drizzle and grey skies. Despite this, we didn’t let it dampen our day, pardon the pun; as we attempted to make the most of what we could. The…

  • Monday Top 10: Robert Niles' Top 10 Theme Parks

    22 Dec 2014 | 11:24 am
By Robert Niles: Last week on the Monday Top 10, we continued our year-end wrap-up with a personal list from your editor of the top 10 theme parks I have not visited but want to, someday. Today, let's celebrate the top parks we have visited, and I'll get the conversation going with my personal list of the world's top 10 theme parks.Remember, I made this list from the parks I have visited, so no park that appeared on last week's list will appear on this one. To determine the order, I asked myself which park in the world would I most want to revisit, if money and travel hassles weren't issues.

    19 Dec 2014 | 12:30 pm
By Robert Niles: If you'd like to see the differences between Disney and Universal's treatment of the most popular film franchises in their theme parks, illustrated in one photo, here you go: Can you imagine a Universal Studios T-shirt depicting Voldemort on the Caro-Seuss-el? Or Minions in wizard robes? It's impossible to imagine J.K. Rowling allowing such trivialization of the Wizarding World and its inhabitants. But George Lucas long has shown a great acceptance of irreverence toward his Star Wars characters. After all, you can't greenlight the Star Wars Holiday Special if you're taking…

The right nighttime lighting can truly be transformational. The Arizona Biltmore Hotel is beautiful during the day, but add in a dark blue sky, dramatic lighting, and a huge Christmas tree and you really have something spectacular. The ominous clouds and pink hues of sunset perfectly frame the back patio area. This little sculpture shown below has a most interesting history. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and sculpted by Alfonso Iannelli, this Sprite was one of many created for Chicago's Midway Gardens in 1914. The Gardens went out of business and in 1929 all was bulldozed into Lake Michigan;…

It's not surprising that this home located near Hollywood Boulevard doesn't look very familiar; even though it can be seen in one of the most classic 1950's melodramas, it was relegated to the background. At the beginning of "Rebel Without A Cause," a drunken Jim Stark (James Dean) can be seen laying down on the street playing with a toy monkey. The house in the background is none other than the one you see here. One of these days I'll try to match the shot at night; first I'll need to find the toy monkey. This fence which was once on display at the now defunct James Dean Gallery in Fairmount,…

Part of my making-lemonade-out-of-lemons mindset involved staying at the Arizona Biltmore on a recent journey to Phoenix. For years, I had lived under the false impression that this massive hotel had been designed by my architectural idol, Frank Lloyd Wright. Au contraire, mes amis. Wright was hired as a consultant by Albert Chase McArthur, the actual architect on record for the hotel that opened in 1929. Part of the Hilton portfolio, the company does very little to discourage this misconception. The above vintage photo is from February 1936.Ads for the desert resort touted its warm weather…

  • Mickey and Minnie in Formal Dress

    18 Dec 2014 | 6:03 am
Three last images from 1973 trip. The first two are of the kids meeting Mickey Mouse in front of the Opera House on Main Street. Note Mickey is in his formal outfit and also his gloves are regular white gloves with five fingers and not the oversized three finger gloves. In the first photograph, the lady in the window kind of gives me the creeps. The last photograph is of Mickey's perennial girlfriend Minnie Mouse. Note she is in her formal outfit with no polka dot skirt. Mickey does have some nice legs.

The family posing in front of several buildings in Disneyland in 1973. First up is a slightly different angle of the family in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Based upon the clothing, I would say this is a nice summery day. The flags on the drawbridge add a nice color to the image. Next up is the family in front of the Blue Bayou in New Orleans Square. The details of the architecture and iron work have always impressed me. The Blue Bayou is one of the best restaurants in Disneyland with the perpetual twilight being a unique feature.

Disneyland visitors might see Mickey, Donald, Goofy, or Tigger, or any one of the many beloved costumed characters. But I always get a kick out of seeing a rare or relatively obscure character! Bernard and Bianca from "The Rescuers"; Robin Hood; Scrooge McDuck! In this first photo, taken right near the Matterhorn chalet (you can just see the roof through the trees), 3 characters from "Pinocchio" (my favorite animated feature!) entertain the crowds. Honest John, I would love to see him there! And of course he will almost always be accompanied by his henchman/flunky Gideon. Pinoke hasn't…

Which, by the way, were provided to GDB through the generosity of Ken Martinez, who snapped the pictures at the Sacramento State Railroad Museum. I have to get up there someday.Wow, look at that setup! Ken tells us that this is a Lionel tinplate roundhouse that could be expanded by adding sections. It's fantastic. I like Christmas, but when I was a kid, I looooved Christmas. I guess it was just that thing, your kid brain amps everything up and makes it more exciting and magical. My dad would dust off his favorite LP's of holiday music (Nat King Cole, "The Nutcracker Suite" by the Boston Pops, Bing Crosby), we'd salivate over the new Sears "Wish Book", and we would enjoy a variety of Christmas-themed arts and crafts in school (glitter, pipe cleaners, macaroni, and glue were key ingredients). Speaking of school, here's a photo from a classroom from sometime in the 1950's. They've got their tree all…

This was another brutal SoCal winter! Seems there are rumors that the star might make a comeback; presumably it would be updated with energy-efficient LEDs. That would be cool!Sticking with the Christmas theme, let's take a look at the big tree in Town Square. Look at all of the folding chairs, presumably set up for guests to…

“Welcome to Disney’s Animal Kingdom” Hey everyone: sorry it has been so long; school has been getting the best of me. Today I will share my top attraction and food picks for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Often regarded as a “half-day park,” there is really lots to do over a full day.  (Yes, I do know they are adding Avatar Land, but that’s going to take a few years).   Attractions: 1: Expedition Everest. My second-favorite coaster in Walt Disney World (the first being Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Starring Aerosmith).  It has a great 80 ft.

The biggest mystery during Christmas is figuring out how Santa Claus can visit so many houses in one single night. I still ask myself that question every year and at Walt Disney World, the same question can be asked because Santa can be found in many different locations during the holiday season. Whether you are wanting to see him in Magic Kingdom Park, Downtown Disney, Epcot, or resort lobbiesyou will have many opportunities to put in a good word before Christmas comes to town. In Magic Kingdom Park, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be located for a meet and greet at the Tour Guide Gardens next to…

As I have mentioned many times before, I am a planner, so it should come as no surprise that I begin my Christmas preparations in September.  As is the case with most planners, I develop a list of people for whom I will be purchasing gifts, and alongside each person’s name I write the item I most hope to give them.  Of course, I always jot down a few contingency options in the event that the “perfect” gift proves elusive.  Once my list is complete, I eagerly head to the stores, or my computer, in search of each carefully thought-out gift.  Inevitably, there is at least one…

It’s true, a visit to Walt Disney World shouldn’t be all about staying connected with your phone.  We should be able to experience and enjoy the magic without texting, tweeting, checking in, etc. But in some cases it’s necessary to be accessible to the outside world (in case of emergency, for instance, or for business purposes), and many of us use our phones to take pictures or video while visiting the parks, so we can have those memories!

  • Adventure Into The World of Yesterday, Tomorrow, and Fantasy: Disney Tip #81

    Peyton Spear
    19 Dec 2014 | 6:00 am
The biggest mystery during Christmas is figuring out how Santa Claus can visit so many houses in one single night. I still ask myself that question every year and at Walt Disney World, the same question can be asked because Santa can be found in many different locations during the holiday season. Whether you are wanting to see him in Magic Kingdom Park, Downtown Disney, Epcot, or resort lobbiesyou will have many opportunities to put in a good word before Christmas comes to town. In Magic Kingdom Park, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be located for a meet and greet at the Tour Guide Gardens next to…
  • I Have a Craving for Some “Goofy” Candy

    Kendall Foreman
    17 Dec 2014 | 7:00 am
As I have mentioned many times before, I am a planner, so it should come as no surprise that I begin my Christmas preparations in September.  As is the case with most planners, I develop a list of people for whom I will be purchasing gifts, and alongside each person’s name I write the item I most hope to give them.  Of course, I always jot down a few contingency options in the event that the “perfect” gift proves elusive.  Once my list is complete, I eagerly head to the stores, or my computer, in search of each carefully thought-out gift.  Inevitably, there is at least one…

  • 25 Drinks of Christmas Countdown – Day 22: “Carl’s Combo” at Rose & Crown

    Derek Burgan
    22 Dec 2014 | 9:00 am
By Derek Burgan The Christmas season is my absolute favorite time of the year. Growing up, one of the little things I loved most was getting an Advent calendar and counting down the days until Santa would be coming down the chimney. As I grew older, I had to leave Advent calendars in the rear view mirror, but I still miss that daily countdown building anticipation to the big day. So, we’re going to start a virtual Advent calendar here at TouringPlans. For 2014, we are going to countdown our favorite drinks at Walt Disney World and the Universal Orlando Resort. Criteria: Drinks can be…
  • Menu Monday: Infant Friendly Dining at Walt Disney World

    Angela Dahlgren
    22 Dec 2014 | 3:00 am
By Angela Dahlgren One of the (many) reasons I love Walt Disney World is because the parks are so family friendly. There are some vacation destinations where bringing a baby would be impossible. At Disney, even the dining is suitable for all ages. Having a young one of my own, I know the insecurities that come with bringing an infant to a restaurant. Will she get fussy? What if she cries? How will I entertain her? Quick service dining is one thing, but enjoying a nice sit-down meal is quite another. So with that in mind, i’ve provided a list of my favorite infant-friendly…

But now it’s nighttime, you think to yourself “How do also experience things related to Frozen after the sun is down?” Disney has your back with Freeze the Night! A Family Dance Party. It’s a dance…

    2 Dec 2014 | 10:00 am
Every year around this time, I re-post Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A. Christmas music loop for those who don’t have it yet. Having just returned from Walt Disney World, I can confirm that these are all the same songs played on Magic Kingdom’s Main Street, except my versions don’t randomly stop in the middle and skip to the next song. Scroll down and you’ll find MP3s of every song on Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A. Christmas music loop. Happy holidays! Several years ago, MiceAge.com’s Al Lutz posted a complete listing of the songs played on…

I’ve already covered Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings 2014 Bridal Showcase and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party + Villains’ Sinister Soiree. Today is all about the cake! • Throwback Thursday: Halloween at Dick Van Dyke’s House

    Carrie
    30 Oct 2014 | 12:30 pm
Those of you who see this annually, bear with me. I get a lot of questions this time of year about helping decorate Dick Van Dyke’s house for Halloween. It was this crazy fluke that we knew somebody who knew somebody who helped Van Dyke stage his legendary Halloween displays. Dick Van Dyke LOVES Halloween—he says it’s like Christmas for him, and he likes to go all-out to have the most gruesome, over-the-top display on the block. So for five years we had the privilege of being on the team of folks who helped him, er, execute his vision. In 2013 Van Dyke decided to hang up his…

    23 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
When we were in Walt Disney World last month, we attended Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for the first time in four years, mostly so we could experience the new Villains’ Sinister Soiree: A Wicked Takeover of Cinderella Castle—because if they were charging $99/person on top of the cost of a party ticket that costs $62–$77/person, it must be starring Michael Jackson returned from the grave and feature brand-new Cadillacs as favors, right?! Despite not being a huge fan of character meet-n-greets, parades or stale candy, I was really looking forward to attending the…
  • 2014 Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Showcase Recap

    Carrie
    3 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…

The car is super fast and it has a neat high jump feature that also seems to make our dogs bark every time my son hits the button. The Hot Wheels High Jump Frenzy car can perform 360 degree spins and front flips, which makes it a very fun toy to play with. The high jump is activated by the push of a button on the remote control. And like all of Toy…
  • Is Travel Insurance Worth It? Protect Your Bubble for Peace of Mind

    Dan
    19 Dec 2014 | 10:18 pm
It used to be that travel insurance was just for international trips. With the number of flight delays and random issues that now come up with domestic travel, getting insurance is a smart bet. Considering how much a family vacation costs these days, the small price of travel insurance can seem like a bargain when your vacation goes off the rails. Everyone seems to have a travel horror story. Some involve massive flight delays, while others involve bad hotels or rough weather ruining a trip. Even on my best trips, there is always something that doesn’t seem to go to plan. When my wife…
  • Why Give One Book When You Can Give Half a Million with Scribd?

    Dan
    18 Dec 2014 | 1:51 pm
Depending on traffic, my commute can range from 20 minutes to close to an hour. I don’t have far to drive, but the traffic during peak commute times can be ridiculous. I usually make the most out of my commute time by listening to podcasts or books on tape. I honestly can’t remember the last time I listened to the over the air radio. Scribd recently contacted me to check out their audiobook subscription service. Audiobooks are great because I can listen to a good story while driving, hit pause, and then pick it up again when I’m on the treadmill at the gym. When I have a…
  • Is a New Laptop on Your Christmas List? Ask Santa for the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro

    Dan
    14 Dec 2014 | 10:13 pm
What is the best laptop to buy for Christmas? This time of year, I get the question a lot. When you’re the “tech guy” in the family, holidays are often spent dishing out gift buying advice. Even my boss approached me for advice on what cell phone to buy her daughter. The cell phone question is more difficult to answer. But when it comes to computers, I usually recommend Lenovo’s Yoga series of laptops. I just upgraded to the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro after using the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 for the past few years. I like the Yoga laptops because they are super thin and…
  • Moto 360 is a Fashionable Watch that Keeps you Connected Wherever You Travel

    Dan
    11 Dec 2014 | 1:19 am
I used to love it when my grandfather would open the back of his pocket watch and show me how the gears moved inside. Mode Media sent me the Moto 360 watch to review and I was reminded of why timepieces have endured as an accessory for all these years. Timepieces have a certain elegance that make them fashionable, as well as functional, no matter if they hang from a chain or if they are strapped to your wrist. Watches are having a revival lately, thanks in part to an interest in health tracking, but also from just how far the technology has come. Modern digital watches are losing their bulk…

I don’t mean to be a wet blanket. I really don’t. I loved Big Hero 6. It gave me way more feels than I planned on having this week. I fell madly in love with Baymax, and the movie should be lauded for its storytelling, animation, and, especially, its commitment to a diverse cast that never […]
