  • COTM…Horace Horsecoller

    Bill Iadonisi
    1 May 2015 | 12:00 am
Horace Horsecoller has the great distinction in being one of the first of the collection of barnyard animals to become Mickey’s friend. He was created by Ub Iwerks and has the characteristic “Rubber Hose” style typical of the early Toons. He is also recognized by his trademark “Horsecoller” always around his neck and a bow-tie. Horace first appeared as Mickey’s plow horse in the 1929 short the “Plow Boy”. In the short he is just Mickey’s plow horse but on cue he could stand on his hind legs, his hooves turned into hands with gloves on and then back to a plow horse…

There is perhaps no name on earth that when invoked can release a flood of emotions and memories then that of Walter Elias Disney. Ask anyone what Disney means to them, and the majority will say…Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, and for most today, Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Cruise lines and Time shares. But to anyone lucky enough to be a member of the “Baby Boomer” crowd, the Mickey Mouse Club will command center stage. This children’s variety show was Walt’s second foray into a television series, the first being “Disneyland” later retitled the “Walt Disney anthology…

All Disney fans and historians know that Walt Disney had made more innovations and firsts in animation than most. Walt was above nothing else, an innovator, dreamer and many consider him a seer, who seemed to know what would work, amid all his naysayers, including his own partner and brother Roy and wife, Lillian. Walt and his team’s contributions to animation and the film industry are still heralded today. The first that comes to mind is “Steamboat Willie” the first synchronized sound cartoon. However, it was not the first. The first publicly shown sound-on-film cartoon was an…

    1 Apr 2015 | 12:00 am
Disney is the world leader in family movies, beginning with the classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937 to the present. And throughout the years he has produced many which stand out among fans and critics alike, but the one animated classic that most consider his “Zenith” is Dumbo, the story of a child (Baby Elephant) who is teased and mocked at because of a physical abnormality (His huge ears) and how he eventually achieved success because of this characteristic, not in spite of it. He had only his mother, Mrs. Jumbo and a sympathetic mouse named Timothy for support.

Let me just say we had the best time in Disneyland. I have never seen my son so much in his element. Apparently the more stimulation for Kai the better.  On a side note: A few months before we went to Disneyland I felt I needed to do something drastic with Kai. He could easily have five meltdowns a day that could last anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour. So one night I was searching Pinterest for ideas and I found some parents eliminate all dye from their diet. I talked with R about it and he agreed. So I told Kai he was allergic to dye and he needed to be careful with what he ate.

Whether you are a fan of the movie or not, it should be recommended viewing for all theme park fans because it raises an interesting moral question about the film's distributors themselves. The price of dinner and show does not include a chair…and you are not allowed to stand. It's an enjoyable ride that rarely has a wait and is filled with all your favorite tunes from the movie. And yet for me, it's a bit of a snoozer. I know I know…it's great for kids. Not every attraction has to be an "E" ticket.Still, Peter Pan in Fantasyland is for kids and it packs a wallop, which is exactly what this attraction is missing.See…even Ariel is falling asleep in her own attraction. The effects, which have been fine-tuned a few…

Note that kids are 15 cents cheaper than adults.

This toy was sold not only at Disneyland but also was available at five and dime stores throughout the United States. The other variation is a green box that is more of a closed box. I believe the yellow one is the first version. A fun toy in a fun package.

At first I thought that the photo below was a portrait of a happy little family during their visit to The Happiest Place on Urf. They're looking at the camera, mom is smiling, dad is glowering, and the balloons in the background make for a colorful accent.  Looks like a breeze is about to blow them away. A grandma and grandpa are just behind our family, and a hidden kid is walking away with his own balloon. Oh yeah, and It's a Small World (I will always capitalize it, Ken Martinez!) is in the background, as if you didn't know.OK, here's a "take two", and this time it wasn't ruined by…

I'm always extra glad to be able to share vintage Tomorrowland photos, and even more glad when they are nice images of the fabulous "New Tomorrowland".Both of these were probably taken from the Peoplemover, which took guests up high enough to get a good elevated vantage point. The Rocket Jets and People Mover load area take center stage here; man, that rocket was big! Not as big as a real Saturn V, but still pretty large. The Anaheim Convention Center is playing peek-a-boo behind it! Notice the tilted-up roofs of the Peoplemover cars... they automatically lifted when entering the station to…

It's time to sift through a collection of slide scans from the New York World's Fair! The Vatican Pavilion was one of the most-visited attractions at the Fair, bringing approximately 27 million guests through its doors... only General Motors' "Futurama" topped it. What was  the big draw??Michelangelo's beautiful "Pieta"! This was the first (and only) time that this treasure was allowed out of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome since 1499. It was behind large sheets of bulletproof glass, and people viewed it from one of three moving sidewalks. I guess they couldn't get this…

I am happy to announce that today I am sharing the LAST of the super-murky photos from 1965! I hope that they don't give you nightmares. Here we are, in a busy Tomorrowland. The Douglas Rocket to the Moon is smack-dab in the center, and it is venting some liquid oxygen fuel as it wait to blast off. The Astro Jets are to our left, and a tour guide carefully appraises us to make sure we are not dangerous. Oh man, let's try to lighten this thing up a bit! It got grainy in places, but it's an improvement. That kid wears the feathered hat like a boss! Everyone is bundled in sweaters and coats,…

Here's an odd pair from 1961's Frontierland. I wish they were more exciting, but what can you do. I actually sort of like this detail of the Keel Boat, "Gullywhumper". The sign has been decoupaged on by Mike Fink, who always did like an afternoon of "arts and crafts". He was out of glitter on that day. Notice the paddles, which were presumably there in case the boat's motor conked out. While I would prefer to ride up top, I would go back in time and ride down below as well, and take plenty of flash pictures to preserve what it looked like (for those of us who have no idea). I'm sure it…

The news about Innoventions being gutted is all around Mice Chat. My question to you is what would you replace that space with? I would replace it with a futuristic city, looking like in the "Meet the Robinson's" movie.(hope I spelled that right) Kind of like a little model that stands about 6ft tall so they could fit in the hole city. That would lead to a staircase to go to a restaurant that is themed to the different thoughts of what the future would look like. Such as in the 50's how we thought the 21st century would look. There could be a waiting room with life on Mars or…

In my last post, I spoke about my plan to ride HM during the complete 24-hour party, my goal being 100 times. Well, I was definitely there the whole day, except for 15 minutes I spent trying to give myself a sugar rush at Pooh Corner, but I only made it on the ride 71 times. That's probably the first time someone has said they rode HM ONLY 71 times in a row. I'm actually very happy with my new personal record; it definitely crushed my old record of 59 times in a row. Everyone I met was very supportive, and I especially could not have kept going without the tremendous support from the cast…

  • New Tomorrowland Movie Posters and Trailer – Review of the Epcot Sneak Peek

    20 Apr 2015 | 1:58 pm
Over the weekend, an extended preview began on both coasts to showcase Tomorrowland’s May 22nd release. In Epcot, the preview took the place of the much beloved (or much despised from some fans who don’t “get it”) Captain EO starring Michael Jackson. I am firmly in the LOVE category with Captain EO, but I feel like us getting a second chance to enjoy the rag tag band of space misfits led by the infamous Captain EO, and the film itself getting a second life among a new generation was a great gift from Disney to us. I would love if ALL of Epcot could return to its…

“Imagine a place where nothing is impossible” I knew I was going to like Tomorrowland, but I had no idea how much it was going to mean to me. Some people have been saying this movie will only appeal to Disney fans, but I don’t think that’s the case. Disney fans will get the nostalgic feeling of the scene at the World’s Fair more than others. When they hear “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” playing they’ll be holding in the urge to sing along. And, the fact that the film perfectly captures the spirit and vision of Walt…
  • Discovering the American Spirit Amidst the Libraries of Walt Disney World

    Kathy & Sean
    27 May 2015 | 6:00 am
There are many things throughout the Walt Disney World Resort that embody and celebrate the American spirit.  The Fire Station on Main Street, U.S.A.; the American Adventure in Epcot; the representation of the shores of the east coast at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn—these are just a few examples.  Some of these nationalistic representations are obvious, while others are more subtle and personal. As a librarian, it would be no surprise that Kathy notices anything related to books, reading, and libraries.  Although a fire station, Main Street, and a town hall may be well-established…

Toontown was open from October 1, 1996- February 11, 2011, when it was closed to create Storybook Circus. Toontown was always fun! Mickey’s Toontown started out as Mickey’s Birthdayland, which opened on June 18, 1988. It then transformed into Mickey’s Starland in May, 1990. Do you have a Throwback Thursday photo you would like to share with us? Email NDM130 and we could feature your Throwback Thursday…

What a week! There’s been a lot going on, so it took a while to get this recap done. This week’s episode begins with a preview of what’s to come. I guess Katilyn kisses everyone. Then there’s going to be a stand-up comedy group date, AND a boxing group date. And there’s going to be some drama involving Kupah. Uh oh. The show opens with a deep conversation between Chris and Kaitlyn. Then the guys have a round table discussion. Deep strategizing. Followed by a sad phone call from Britt to her Mom. Then there’s a knock on the door and it’s…Brady! Yay! Remember last week where…

One of the best perks about writing blogs and covering Disney Press events, for me at least, is the wonderful friends I have made over the past 10 years. There is perhaps no name on earth that when invoked can release a flood of emotions and memories then that of Walter Elias Disney. Walt Disney World is so much more than restaurants, attractions, characters and shows. For the really sharped-eyed guest and of course, Disney fanatic, there are realms and realms of visual and audio inputs for the senses. If you listen carefully, you’ll always hear a Disney song from the movies or a classic Disney short. • “Tomorrowland”- Why it’s the Most Important Film You’ll See in 2015

    Ruby
    28 May 2015 | 6:00 am

My love of Walt Disney World began in November of 1971 and grew with each new trip and adventure I experienced with my parents and brother. But my interest and fascination grew in large part to what I experienced not while in the parks, but in the car or at home, as I loved reading, collecting and learning everything I could about what made this place special. And getting to peek at photos from construction to behind the scenes or even of my favorite attractions fed my love of Walt Disney World even more. And over time, my interest, and book collection has grown, so this week, we’re going…

By Savannah Sanders Model of EPCOT, (c) Walt Disney Company Epcot is one of my favorite parks at Walt Disney World. I never get tired of seeing Spaceship Earth, or watching the dancing Fountain of Nations in Future World, or doing a little shopping in World Showcase; but what I’ve recently discovered is that the Epcot that I know isn’t exactly what Walt Disney had in mind when planning Disney World. You see, back in the 1960s when Disney World was being planned, the Magic Kingdom wasn’t what Walt was most excited about. In fact, when Walt introduced television viewers to…

  • How to Plan a Private Dessert Party at Walt Disney World

    Carrie
    4 May 2015 | 10:00 am
I get a LOT of comments and questions on my Plan a Small Private Event at Walt Disney World page—specifically, about private dessert parties during fireworks shows. These are a great way to celebrate a special occasion at Disney that most people think is reserved only for weddings and corporate events. But Disney Catered Events will actually work with groups as small as 10 (and sometimes smaller—your mileage may vary) as long as the majority are staying at a Disney-owned and -operated hotel. I’ve always had the pricing for every Walt Disney World event venue in Chapters 3 and 5 of…

Because there was cake, I was there… This year’s showcase occurred only 6 months after last year’s, apparently due to presenter David Tutera’s schedule. The cast members I talked to said the next showcase wouldn’t be for another year. You can read about 2014’s bridal showcase here, 2013’s here and 2011’s here. Dan
    25 May 2015 | 9:58 pm
At last count, my son has twenty-five Lego vehicles sitting on his shelf. We have helicopters, trucks, cars, trains, and about every other type of vehicle out there. Even with this armada, he still asks for more each time we pass the Lego store. I can’t blame him. Legos are a lot of fun. Most of all, my son seems to enjoy the challenge of assembling a new Lego set. He carefully follows the directions and assembles some really complex stuff in a short amount of time. Sometimes the Lego kit includes “extra pieces,” but he always beams with pride when he finishes building his latest…

    19 May 2015 | 2:07 pm
My son squealed in delight as the orange and white truck bounced over the rows of race cars. Last night, we had a monster truck rally in our living room and the Road Rippers Piston Thumper was the main attraction. At the press of a button, the engine roared to life, the motorized pistons lit up, and the suped up truck drove over my son’s collection of Toy State vehicles. Whenever my son has friends over, his collection of cars are the most played with toys. The kids seem to love how each of the Toy State vehicles have lights and sound, with most having a unique motorized action. The…

We have two vehicles in our household, which means we also have two car seats for our son. Having the second seat makes life easier when we have a change to our routine. For example, my wife was recently sick which meant I needed to take my son to school. With the extra seat in my car, we were able to head out right away without having to fumble with transitioning the seat from one car to the other. It is also handy to have an extra seat when my son has a friend over. Having the extra seat gives us the freedom to take the kids to the park without having to ask the parent to leave their own…
  • Where Was Walt Disney Born? Here’s Where You Can Find Walt Disney’s Chicago Birthplace

    Dan
    8 May 2015 | 4:25 pm
Where was Walt Disney born? Marceline, Missouri is often referred to as Walt’s boyhood home, but the famous animator was actually born in Chicago, Illinois. I was in Chicago earlier this week and took a little detour on the way to the airport so I could see the home that Walt Disney’s father, Elias Disney, built by hand in the 1890s. It would be easy to pass by the home at 2156 N. Tripp Avenue without realizing the significance of the building. The home has suffered from years of neglect and there is not a historic marker anywhere. The house simply blends in with all the other homes in…
