At Daveland, you just never know what I am going to post. Today's images are 1980's WDI documentations of a toilet from Club 33. Located in the women's restroom, this Victorian-style piece is probably one of the fanciest toilets I've ever seen. Whether this is an original piece from the Club's opening or something that was added later on, I have no idea.A recent photo (not taken by me!) of this piece from inside the Club:It will be interesting to see if this survived the remodel. Here is the concept art of how the new Grand Salon dining room is to look:The Jazz Lounge, built above the French…

  • Bidding a Bittersweet ‘Adios’ to Costa Rica With Adventures by Disney

    Gavin Haubelt
    22 Jul 2014 | 6:34 pm
My Adventures by Disney journey through Costa Rica has, sadly, come to an end. However, I wanted to share with you some final memories from this unique trip. Our last evening in Central America was truly spectacular, including mojito making lessons (with a non-alcoholic cocktail option for the teens!), a delicious farewell dinner and lively regional music. We even enjoyed a live performance from local dancers dressed in the traditional wardrobe of Guanacaste in Costa Rica. Best of all, the performance was capped off with a dance lesson for the entire group! But, what truly made our adventure…

    22 Jul 2014 | 4:24 pm
I new that Disney had invested in the Indian film and tv company UTV, I thought for their animated film division. I had no idea they were making Disney branded Bollywood films there. And yet, later this summer Disney’s “Khoobsurat” starting Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan will be released overseas. Nothing I could find on a domestic release. Watch the preview trailer Khoobsurat, which in english means “Beautiful,” is a quirky, modern romantic comedy about what happens when a vibrant, hopelessly romantic physiotherapist meets a handsome young Rajput prince who is the…

But maybe there’s hope that one day Disney will bring that art form back in house. In the meantime, Lopez is working on his own to keep the tradition and skill of hand drawn animation alive. One of his projects will be near and dear to every Disneyland fan’s heart – an animated recreation of the yesterland attraction ‘America Sings.’ We previously highlighted the near finished version of sequence one…

Sunday, July 20, is National Ice Cream Day, declared by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, and we’re happy for the pure joy of a dripping ice cream cone on a hot summer day. • Looking back at a colossal history for Magic Mountain's Colossus

    22 Jul 2014 | 10:24 am
By Jacob Sundstrom: At 125 tall, no one has used the word “colossal” to describe Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Colossus for quite some time. The “racing” wooden roller coaster hasn’t (regularly) raced in God-only-knows how long and its popularity has waned in recent years. In truth, I can’t remember a time when Colossus was anything more than an afterthought on a visit to the Valencia theme park; that’s about eight years ago now. It’s hard to imagine a time when Colossus was the tallest and fastest roller coaster; just a sign of how much the roller coaster business has changed…
  • What are the world's most underrated attractions?

    21 Jul 2014 | 12:05 pm
By Robert Niles: Monday Top 10: This week we give some attention to attractions that haven't gotten much from Theme Park Insider readers. These are attractions that have earned a high average reader rating from those few who have visited them, but just haven't been rated that often by Theme Park Insiders. For the most part, that's because these rides and walk-through are found at parks in non-English-speaking parts of Europe and Asia. But you'll find a couple of selections this week from American parks that don't crack the top 20 for annual attendance, too. If you've experienced some of these…

  • Insider's Update: New Soarin' theater, new Boardwalk restaurant, and new raises for Disney employees

    19 Jul 2014 | 11:57 am
By Robert Niles: We've learned from several sources that Walt Disney World is moving ahead with plans to build a third theater for the Soarin' show at Epcot, which ultimately should help relieve the often-hours-long waits for the show. If all goes well, the third theater could be ready in time for the debut of the new Soarin' film in a couple years. Dave DeCaro
    22 Jul 2014 | 5:00 am
Today quietly marks the 50th anniversary of one of my favorite (albeit somewhat strange and twisted) films, Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie." Once it was done, Universal seemed to know that they had a box office turkey on their hands, and did their best to give it a broad appeal. This ad truly reeks of desperation. The production got off to a bad start when its leading lady, Grace Kelly, decided to back out.Her replacement, Tippi Hedren, required a lot of one-on-one coaching with Hitch himself to make sure she didn't flop in the very complex role that she was playing. Typically, Hitch allowed his…

Hands down, Napa Rose is the best restaurant at the Disneyland Resort, both in and outside of the park. The entry hall gives a grand welcome with its warm woods, high ceiling, and amber lights. The spacious lounge is the perfect place to hang out while waiting for a table. This time I tried the Napa Passion cocktail. Before seeing Cher at the Anaheim Honda Stadium, we stopped at the Disneyland Resort's Grand Californian Hotel for dinner at the Napa Rose.Although the Grand Californian is a huge facility, because of its Arts & Crafts design, the space seems very warm and approachable. The knick-knacks throughout the lobby and in the display cases are worth a second look. And there are the windows for Club 33 members.Merchandise, merchandise, merchandise. I guess they are attempting to clear house of items with the old logo before the ones with the new (gasp) logo are introduced. Here is the new logo. Ta-da!

  • Pacific Ocean Park Fisherman's Cove and Flying Dolphin

    22 Jul 2014 | 6:00 am
Two views of attractions found at POP. First up is the New England section of the Fisherman's Cove. You can see by the restrooms are George and Martha. Quite a crowd at the park on the day these photographs were taken. The next image is of the Flying Dolphin, later repainted and named the Mahi Mahi. A large ride of which only six were manufactured, the sensation of flying while on the ride was very realistic. When the pier was eventually razed, tugboats were used to pull this structure into the ocean.
  • Pacific Ocean Park Ride Views

    21 Jul 2014 | 6:00 am
Three different views of rides at Pacific Ocean Park. First up is the Sea Spin ride which was the same ride found at carnivals and other amusement parks. The action in this photograph is neat but the theming was minimal. Note the Sea Serpent coaster in the background. Next up is the exit to the Davy Jones Deep Sea Locker. I wonder where this sign lives?

    17 Jul 2014 | 7:25 am
Disneyland had it's Grand Premiere with invited guests. July 17th is the birthday of Disneyland celebrated by fans and the company. Here are some images and items from that day. First up is the golden ticket that would get you into the park on that day 59 years ago... Of course you also had to park the car in the parking lot and here is the parking pass. If you were one of the lucky ones, you would receive a ride on the train pulling into the station as part of the broadcast Dateline Disneyland. Or if you were part of the festivities, you would have this pass to get you inside the park. One…
  • Even More Pacific Ocean Park Fountains

    16 Jul 2014 | 7:14 am
Even more views of the fountains at the entrance. The first image features another shot of the dapper guests coming into the park over the elevated sidewalk. The shell fountains on the walls are a great touch. This image shows a seal in the fountain area. I would believe this practice did not last long, but would have added a great touch to liven up the fountains. The depth of the pool does not appear to be the same depth as the Sea Circus, so I believe this is not from inside the park.
  • Pacific Ocean Park Entrance Fountains

    15 Jul 2014 | 7:14 am
Continuing with the slides featuring Pacific Ocean Park, here are more of the fountain area at the entrance. In this first slide, you can see Jack's at the Beach restaurant in the far left side. Jack's was a celebrity restaurant attracting much of Hollywood and other stars. The stylized King Neptune points the way to the entrance to POP. Next up is a nice overall view of the winding walkway and the well dressed visitors. The sculpture reminds me of modern brutalist sculpture, but is really based upon creatures found deep in the ocean.

    22 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
Man, it drives me koo-koo crazy when I find a big lot of Disneyland slides, only to find that a large percentage of them were taken in one go, either during a ride on the Mark Twain, or on the Jungle Cruise, or, in this case, aboard a Storybook Land Canal Boat. In a lot of 35 snapshots, 12 of them are from that ride. Don't get me wrong, I love the ride! I just don't need so many pictures of it.Anyway, I am attempting to put them more or less in the order in which they would be viewed if you were along for the journey. I think that cute little building up on the hill with the flagstone path is…

It would be hard to not take a picture of the view below, as our Skyway bucket emerged from the darkness of the interior of the Matterhorn into the brilliant future, with Monorails and "atomic" submarines. Very atomic! From ground level, things look pretty mellow. One would never know that in the depths of the ocean there would be the ruins of Atlantis, a giant squid fighting a killer whale, mermaids, a sea serpent, and all manner of other wonders to behold!"Major Pepperidge, why are you including this photo of Schweitzer Falls?". Well, that's a good question, Billy. You see, sometimes…
  • Fantasyland, April 1987

    20 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
Little did Walt Disney know that by 1987, almost 75% of all Americans would live in forced-perspective Bavarian castles. I would say that that's ironic - except that I don't know what "ironic" means. The remaining 25% of Americans spent most of their free time clinging to the sides of mountains.
  • Then & Now, Texas & Seattle

    19 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
I always love a good set of "then and now" pictures. Hopefully you do too!Let's start with this picture from Floresville, Texas (undated, but certainly 1950s), which is about 15 miles to the southeast of San Antonio. We're near the corner of C Street and 3rd, looking toward a sleepy street of small businesses, and the wonderful building housing Ballard Drugs. Hey, I need drugs all the time!Former Texas Governor John Connelly (who was sitting in Kennedy's limo on November 22 1963) was born in Floresville; scenes from Robert Redford's "The Great Waldo Pepper" (1975) and Steven Spielberg's…

Because it's Friday, don'tcha know. I love this September 1975 shot from the Tahitian Terrace, with musicians and performers on stage in front of a very convincing (but fake) tree. The TT must have been one of the best places to work! Awesome music, pretty hula girls, handsome fire dancers twirling flaming torches, and Polynesian-themed food. It all lasted until 1993, which means it's been gone for over 20 years. Phooey. And from September 1963 we get this picture of the Flying Saucer attraction. I never get tired of seeing it! Check out…

Have you ever thought about why your favorite ride is your favorite? If you had to come up with an objective list about what makes a ride great, what criteria would you use? Things that come to mind for me are: 1) Fun (for me, this is best defined as the quality that makes me want to go right back on) 2) Creativity (How elaborate is the themeing in the ride? For example, Haunted Mansion would rank pretty high, California Screamin' not so much) 3) Nostalgia (How much does this tie into the good feelings of the past that you've had on this ride) 4) Short wait times 5) Time on Ride (Pirates…

Looking to hit up Carthay Circle with the family this weekend, thinking of doing lunch. For those of you that have been there, is it somewhat kid friendly? • Review Disneyland of Today Vs Disneyland of years past

    22 Jul 2014 | 3:07 pm
I am 60 years young and have been going to the parks since they opened...what I have observed in that time is the slow demise of Walt's dream. Disneyland was a place for families to go for a reasonable cost and enjoy time together, everybody was treated the same regardless of economic status or standing. Too often today I see more and more private parties,Private Clubs and Special treatment for wealthy guest that are being flaunted in the faces of the general public so those guest can show off their status. The latest flaunt is the Club 33 redo to cater to even more of the special…

We’re in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion, and that means it’s GELATO TIME!!! Unless, of course, it’s pizza time, but for now we’re just going to focus on the sweet stuff :). Italy’s simple Gelato Stand is located just before you enter the Pavilion coming from Germany. Gelato Stand We’ve enjoyed grabbing Gelato Ice Cream Sandwiches during a stroll or two around World Showcase, and you can always get a scoop of your choice of gelato in a cone or cup. Gelato Selections But there are some additional items on the menu as well. For instance, the Coppa Delizia pretty much rocked our world.

I do believe these black strap styles are available in Disney Parks as well. In addition, some new styles of the Buttons print are now available at the DisneyStore.com. I have not seen these in the parks, but I’ll keep an eye out for them. I love the new styles, which seem to be great parks bags, not too big and not too small. As always, we’ll…

I recently had the chance to check out the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando. (Read my restaurant review here: Cascade American Bistro Dinner Review at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Orlando) I call it a resort, because it truly is a resort complex coming in at 1,500 acres. In fact, it’s one of the only resorts that actually shares a border with the Walt Disney World Resort. After grabbing my complementary champagne upon check-in I made my way up to my room. I’m going to give you the full tour,  but first, check out the views from the balcony. After entering the…

One of the titles I was looking forward to the most this summer was The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty’s Prince by Serena Valentino (July 22, 2014). A follow-up to her acclaimed Fairest of All which chronicled the Evil Queen’s (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) descent into madness, Beast tackles what I have long considered my favorite Disney animated film of all time, Beauty and the Beast. While the book starts and ends concurrent with the film, it spends a great deal of its time in flashbacks, giving additional insight into the pre-cursed life of The Prince and how he…

Disney Movie Nights – they are just traditional. They usually involve pj’s, favorite snacks, blankets & stuffed friends. You can include themed activities, food, & decorations. Our whole family becomes involved. From planning, to decorating, to clean-up, it is a true example of teamwork & a great bonding experience. Oz the Great and Powerful is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and really gives you some insight into…

My absolute favorite part of the Walt Disney Family Museum is their ginormous “Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination” model in the last room. I think it might be Patrick’s too, because he took more than a hundred photos of it on our visit last month. If I stick all of these in the already-picture-packed next installment of my Walt Disney Family Museum Weekend Getaway trip report, it might break your eyeballs. So here is a separate post devoted entirely to Patrick’s photo tour of that 12-foot model. Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination was designed to capture his…

I thought you guys might like a trip report on our entire long weekend in San Francisco to see the Walt Disney Family Museum. It’s not all non-stop Disney, but it might give you some ideas of sights to see when you’re in the Bay Area visiting the museum yourself. We wanted a whole day to spend at WDFM, so on our first travel day we decided to check out a different museum, Filoli. This was the main estate of the family that owned the gold mine across the street from my childhood home in Grass Valley. It was one of those places I’d always heard about but never seen, and now…

But since the Mary Blair exhibition is only there through September 7, 2014 and you know how long it takes me to finish these things, I want to do a separate…
  • Why You Should See “Muppets Most Wanted”

    Carrie
    20 Mar 2014 | 10:00 am
When the Muppets got rebooted (again… sorta) in 2012, I wrote a post urging you to go see the movie twice because I’d spent my own first viewing peeking through my fingers in terror that Disney was about to ruin a beloved franchise. It took a second, more relaxed viewing to just let go and enjoy the ride. I also urged you to support the movie so that Disney would make another instead of returning to the wretched-TV-movie formula of the previous decade. And apparently my post worked, cuz they made a sequel! And it’s coming out tomorrow! And you should all go see it!!! Maybe…

About half of our fellow “bleacher creatures,” (as proclaimed by many a homemade T-shirt) were winners of a People magazine contest. The rest of us had won an assortment of other contests—Patrick and I halfheartedly entered after being chatted up by Motion Picture Academy Museum reps during last year’s awesome CicLAvia walk from Mid-City to Downtown LA. disneydose@gmail.com (DisneyApprentice)
    19 Jul 2014 | 10:43 am
We’re back from the grand reopening of Club 33 in Disneyland New Orleans Square. Over the last six months, the club has undergone a huge renovation completely changing the style and theme. When we first broke the story of the renovation a year ago, the scope and effect of the project was completely unknown. This project has completely changed the look and feel of New Orleans Square, with the closing of the Court of Angels and the recent addition of huge windows into the area. Regardless of your opinion of the newly redesigned area, you must accept that there has been a big change.

  • Washington Mom and Son Take an Epic 100 Mile Walk to Great Wolf Lodge

    Dan
    22 Jul 2014 | 11:38 am
What is the biggest adventure you have ever taken with your children? A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…

If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…
  • Portland Makes the List of Top 50 Swim Cities In America

    Dan
    18 Jul 2014 | 12:42 pm
There isn’t a whole lot to do in our little farm town, which is both good and bad depending on your perspective. On one hand, it is nice to live away fro the city where it is much quieter and where traffic is never an issue. On the other hand, making plans for weekend activities usually involves a long drive. One of the neat things our town does have is an aquatic center which offers swim classes and recreational activities for the city’s residents. My son took swim lessons for a couple years and, as a parent, it was fun to watch him grow in his swimming abilities. I still…
  • A Truck in a Can? Toy State’s Hot Wheels Energy R/C is Portable Fun

    Dan
    14 Jul 2014 | 11:19 pm
I have been trying to limit the amount of screen time for my son, but I had to accept my shortcoming as a parent whenever his tablet is around. It is just plain convenient to let him watch a movie or play games on the tablet while in the car. And lately, we have had to run a lot of errands on weekends to prepare for our move. Without something to play with, my son would be really bored waiting while we do boring things. We decided to buy a new mattress before leaving Oregon so that we could still benefit from the state’s zero sales tax. Instead of using a tablet as a babysitter, I gave…

    8 Jul 2014 | 4:55 pm
I never thought Seinfeld would make me feel old. There I was at lunch, making a reference to the infamous George Costanza wallet, and all I got in response were blank stares from the interns. I suppose many of them were still in Kindergarten when the show went off the air. I was trying to sell the interns on the value of carrying around less stuff. Several of the interns had a laptop, tablet and phone with them. I was in the same boat. My own computer bag had become a Costanza wallet of sorts, with two laptops, a tablet, and two cell phones. My aching shoulder was the main reason why I…

Trying different restaurants is part of the fun when you are on vacation at Universal Orlando Resort. However, that can also be quite costly at times depending on where you want to dine, or what you would like to snack on. That is where the Universal Dining Plan comes in. If you are on the dining plan you can actually SAVE MONEY! The best part about the dining plan is that you can actually choose the amount of days you would like to use it, as it is not required for a length of stay.
