Over the years, my wife and I have been members of Disney’s amazing DVC (Disney Vacation Club), proud owners in three Disney properties. We have had many memorable vacations and have been all over “Disney’s World” But the one destination that was missing from our itinerary was Disney’s Hilton Head Resort. For many years, we have wanted to go, but other, more “Exciting” venues tempted our palate and it was always put on the back burner. This year, however we finally made the plunge so to speak and I must agree with Disney…It is a Hidden Gem! But rest assured this is not one of…

Walt Disney could without any argument be included among history’s greatest legions of Innovator’s, Dreamers and Showmen. Walt had the uncanny ability to know what would work, and was a stickler for perfection. He was also the eternal optimist. No matter what, Walt always had a bright outlook, even during bankruptcy; it seemed nothing could bring him down. Even when his distractors were telling him no, (Walt’s wife Lillian and Brother Roy as Walt planned “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) Walt Disney never wavered a bit, stuck to his guns, and finished his “Dreams” In the end, he…

Max Goof or his given name Maximilian Goof is the son of Goofy Goof, Disney’s lovable but clumsy character. Although throughout his career, Goofy’s wife was never really mentioned, and it was never said what became of her. Goofy himself started out in an obscure role as an obnoxious character named “Dippy Dawg” (The original name given before Goofy) in the 1932 short, Mickey’s Revue. It was not until the 1952 Cartoon “Father’s Day Off” that Goofy was shown with his son Max as a baby. The only brief appearances that his wife had were in the 1951 cartoons’ “Cold War” and…

Our ally and neighbor to the north have some of the most beautiful scenery and is the second largest country in area after Russia. The country was first settled by the French, but in 1763, Great Britain took control. With both countries colonizing the land, both French and English is spoken.       Reid and Jenn recently got engaged at Club 33–the exclusive club in New Orleans Square at Disneyland.  Reid had waited months just to get in, knowing how special Disneyland is to Jenn, so I wanted to really capture their special day with a set of his and hers stemless wine glasses they can use to toast to many more special occasions. Each glass had the classic Club 33 logo, their name in a font resembling the one used in Fantasyland, and his and her “Hidden Mickeys” -one in a tux, and one with a bow-on the bottom of the glass.

  • Think Disneyland is just for kids? Think again.

Both our children visited Disneyland when they were five. We believed it was the perfect age for them to visit and remember their time there. It made it even more special when they visited during their birthdays. This year, one of our family members was preparing to celebrate a very special birthday – my husband, who was turning 40.  His wish? To visit Disneyland. I was a bit taken aback at his request. I mean, I know Disneyland is a great place to celebrate being a kid – but it is a great place to celebrate being an adult? Turns out, yes. And it was one of the most memorable weeks…

  • Say Goodbye to the Sorcerer's Hat at Disney's Hollywood Studios

    24 Oct 2014 | 1:52 pm
By Robert Niles: Walt Disney World confirmed this afternoon that it will remove the Mickey's Sorcerer's Hat from Disney's Hollywood Studios. The removal is expected to begin soon and to be completed by early 2015.No more pictures like this. The fate of the stage that has blocked this view of the hat in recent years is unknown, but many cast members expect it to be removed along with the stage. The removal of both would allow an unobstructed view of the Chinese theater from Hollywood Boulevard, the visual "weenie" from the park's first decade, when the park was known as the Disney-MGM…
  • Vote of the Week: When Was the 'Golden Age' for Disney Theme Parks?

    24 Oct 2014 | 11:06 am
By Robert Niles: Perhaps the only thing that some Disney fans love more than the parks themselves are their memories of the way the parks used to be. Nostalgia fuels big business at the Disney theme parks, from sales of throwback T-shirts to various collectibles from long-closed attractions. Even more than the merchandise sales, though, Disney cultivates nostalgia as a way to entice people to book future visits to its theme parks. How better to relive a golden memory from your past than by coming back and visiting again?Remember the old hub at the Magic Kingdom? But too much idealizing of the…

  • When Should You Buy a Universal Studios Annual Pass?

    23 Oct 2014 | 10:25 am
By Robert Niles: At what point do visitors get a better deal by purchasing a Universal annual pass, instead of single- or multi-day tickets? Last week, we answered that annual pass question for Disney theme parks, so let's look at Disney's biggest competitor today.Universal Orlando charges $96 for a one-day/one-park theme park ticket, a couple bucks more than the $94 that Walt Disney World charges for three of its parks and three dollars less than Disney charges for one day at the Magic Kingdom. But you can buy a Universal Orlando annual pass for far less than the cost of a Disney World AP.

By Anthony Murphy: At the beginning of the season, my friends and I went to Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest in Gurnee, Illinois. Unfortunately, we picked one of the coldest days in October. There were actually snow flurries in the morning. The good news is that the day warmed up and kept much of the crowds away. Because of this, we were able to experience the rides, shows, and haunted houses. Great America is family friendly from open (11am) to around 4 pm. Afterwards, the scare actors come out. Usually the morning is the time for rides and trick or treating and the night is for the…

Born May 12, 1932, Ronald Le Roy Overacker was the birth name of Baby LeRoy, who is best known as a comic foil for the bombastic W. C. Fields. His career on the silver screen began when he was less than a year old, co-starring with Maurice Chevalier in "A Bedtime Story" (1933) and ended with a cameo role as himself in "Cinema Circus" (1937). Today's photo shows Baby LeRoy with Fields in "The Old Fashioned Way" (1934), which was his second feature with the bulbous-nosed comedian ("Tillie and Gus," 1933, was the first, and "It's a Gift," 1934, was the third). Here's the vintage publicity blurb…

Although not each of the items is specific to Halloween, they are representations of creatures found for Halloween such as ghosts, cats and devils. First up are two different sets of Casper the Friendly Ghost card games. The Harvey comic character was every kid's favorite ghost and even a live action feature film. The graphics are very bold. Next item is a great Bakelite cat toy. In the 1930's Bakelite was an early plastic that was used for many products, crib toys being a major use. The cat is in a great cubist design. The final two items are nice ceramic statues. The first is another Harvey…
  • Mickey's Birthdayland Walt Disney World 1990

    23 Oct 2014 | 6:32 am
In 1990 I visited Florida and Walt Disney World for the first time. Growing up in California, the attractions in Florida were not a huge draw. By 1990, there were enough attractions to draw me to Florida including the new Disney-MGM studios and EPCOT Center. In the Magic Kingdom a small land was created in 1988 to celebrate Mickey Mouse's 60th birthday, a land called Mickey's Birthdayland. This land closed in 1990 and changing to Mickey's Fun Fair and then to Mickey's Toontown. The land was a fun place to visit. The first two images are from Mickey's house. The desk is fantastic for a…

Dipping into my own archive of photographs, I take a trip back to late 1988. One of the new attractions on the horizon was Splash Mountain in Bear Country (soon to be renamed Critter Country.) The original opening date for the attraction was to be January 1989. As part of the construction, there was a large fence placed with great advertising for the attraction. The first image shows the imagineering artwork for the splash part of the attraction. The second image shows two renderings of the interior and exterior of the ride along with advertising for the attraction. Note the opening date. A…

Getting into the Halloween spirit are these four snapshots of a parade at an elementary school in 1955. It appears the whole school is either in the parade or watching the parade. The first three images are of the parade. First up is a shot of a group of older kids walking and younger kids watching. The pirate is a nice costume. Next up is another view with younger kids parading. The capes and hats for the costumes in the foreground do not appear to be very comfortable. The third image shows even more kids in costume walking in the parade. I am digging the two kids in the foreground dressed…

Going into my own archives of photographs from a trip in 1987. The focus is on Star Tours, the motion simulator ride featuring the Star Wars universe and was drawing large crowds. Being of the right age, Star Wars was a great influence on me and a film series I watched and loved. Star Tours was a great fun ride with a story and set up that placed the guest into the universe. First up is the marquee sign from the long line. Next up is a shot of C3PO working on a Star Cruiser. Unfortunately it was crowded and I managed to get a guest in the image... Last image is of the fun droid working on the…

Digging through a box of random slides can be a fun activity. You just never know what you're going to find! Usually, 99% of the images are of no particular interest to me. But on occasion I'll find a slide that piques my curiosity - where is that place? Can I find a view of how it looks today using Google's "Street View"? Sometimes I'm successful, other times there are not enough clues to help. But I have faith in the GDB readers, who have worked miracles before. No pressure! This first image is from 1957, seemingly looking up the main street of some small mountain town. I thought that the…
  • Flying Saucers, August 1966

    24 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
I don't have a lot of good shots of the Flying Saucers left in my collection (that is to say, ones that I haven't already posted). So I am always happy to find one, especially when it is as fun as this one. A mom and her daughter look like they are having a great time as they skitter across the giant air-hockey table. Or maybe they are sort of stuck there against the edge - I've read that that could happen to people.  With the impending doom (in January) of "Luigi's Flying Tires" over at DCA, it seems pretty clear that this unusual ride system was just not practical for a busy theme…
  • Beautiful Tomorrowland, August 1960

    23 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
I've become so used to similar views of the old Sub Lagoon that, at times, I get jaded and forget how cool scenes like this are. But look at it! If I had never heard of Disneyland, and then somebody showed me this picture, I would want to go there. Blue blue water, Autopia cars, coral reefs, a Monorail, and Merms! This one's a beauty too. Love the Skyway passing overhead, along with the old Moonliner and Yacht Bar. And… more Merms.
  • Nature's Wonderland, July 1967

    22 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
I am always happy to revisit the wonderful (and much-missed) Nature's Wonderland. What an attraction! Two male elk, almost hidden by trees and shrubs, are battling it out for those barely-interested females. In fact, they girls are actually watching a small black and white TV just out of frame (it is always showing animals programs like "Gentle Ben", "Flipper", "Lassie", and so on). Here's a nice portrait of the rock formations in the desert. They get the job done, but the craftsmen who specialize in rock work have improved by leaps and bounds over the years. The desert looks especially…

    21 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two more images from a set of slides in which many (but not all) of them are mysteriously dark, and soft focus in places. In spite of the flaws, they still manage to retain some visual appeal - maybe you could argue that they have a "noir" quality. There is stuff to be seen on both sides of a Jungle Cruise launch, which makes for some less-than-optimal photos. Clearly our photographer was trying to capture the dancing natives on the opposite bank, but instead got a silhouetted picture of fellow guests (craning their necks!). I almost expect Crow and Tom Servo to be there too (any…

Okay, don't kill me, but I have a really stupid question. And no, this thread is not about the endless issue with guests and the Ghost Host spiel recitation competition. :D When you go inside the foyer, you see two sets of doors. I have never paid attention to which one opens up into the stretching room elevator. Do they have 2 identical stretching rooms so that one is always in use while the other is waiting for a new grouping of guests or is one of them a prop door? I'm seriously perplexed and it's been bugging me all week so I thought I would ask here. Thanks!

Anonymouse was right again.. Well, it is going to become a reality. Yes, the iconic Sorcerer’s Hat at Hollywood Studios will be no more. Disney has said they are going to “reimagine” the area where that hat stands right now. I know people on both sides feel strongly, but I do think the park needs some updating. On the other hand I will miss it! A lot of people did not like it from the beginning. They felt it blocked the Chinese Theater and ruined the feel of the park. The hat was first installed in 2001 and will meet it’s demise in 2014.  This is one of the many…

In our home, Christmas music is not allowed to play until AFTER the showing of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Once the parade is over, we start with our holiday decorations and such(read: Black Friday planning). Walt Disney could without any argument be included among history’s greatest legions of Innovator’s, Dreamers and Showmen. Walt had the uncanny ability to know what would work, and was a stickler for perfection. He was also the eternal optimist. Have you visited Wandering Oaken’s Frozen Trading Post & Funland at Disney’s Hollywood Studios®?  Tucked in between Toy Story Midway Mania® and the former location of the Studio Backlot Tourwe accidentally discovered the entrance to this Frozen attraction while checking on the installation progress of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.  Like most Walt Disney film fans, we’re Frozen fans.  But when the doors to Oaken’s opened and we entered a glowing green and blue lit room filled with children laughing and playing in REAL snow, it was a magical…

    24 Oct 2014 | 7:00 am
As far back as we can remember, apples have always been associated with teachers. Students may come to school with a shiny, new apple and place it lovingly on the teacher’s desk. It’s an old tradition and a very sweet gesture! Each year, we are given all sorts of apple goodies from students and parents, so we thought it would be fitting to begin our blogging with an article on apples. Being teachers from New York, we are no strangers to apples. The “Empire State” has some of the best around, but honestly, our favorites can be found right inside the Disney parks. No…

Aloha! Or should I say, “Hey, Y’all”? Our whirlwind month of September is over, and we are finally getting settled in our new home in North Carolina. Much like Space Mountain®, this experience was full of many unexpected twists and turns in the dark. Just when we thought that we had a smooth ride ahead of us, there would be a sudden drop. We had to constantly adjust our plans on the fly to account for setbacks in the schedule. The first step in the move was to send our van off of the island of Oahu and to the Los Angeles vehicle processing center. I’ve already covered the…

Every time I visit Walt Disney World, there is a new experience awaiting me. Whether it’s something that has been around for ages, but I never found the time to check out, or something brand new that’s just begging to be seen and done, Disney always manages to keep things fresh and exciting. During my most recent visit to Disney World, I was finally able to go “sea” Finding Nemo the Musical (I apologize for any puns I make throughout this post, including this one; just go with it). Before entering the “Theater in the Wild” of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in which the…

By Derek Burgan This week’s SATURDAY SIX takes a look at Six Reasons To Go On a Disney Cruise. Earlier this month I was fortunate to be able to take my first ever Disney Cruise aboard the Disney Wonder as part of TouringPlans #Everywhere promotion. The experience was pretty amazing overall, and while before the trip I had a hard time understanding why people would pay so much for a Disney Cruise when their are some great alternatives (such as Royal Caribbean) for a fraction of the price, I now see exactly what draws people back again and again to DCL. In fact, I think for many Disney…

By Rikki Niblett ©Disney All day, I’ve been seeing the rumors, but it now appears to be official! The iconic Sorcerer’s Hat at the end of Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Chinese Theatre at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is being removed. The Sorcerer’s Hat was introduced into the park in 2001 as a part of the “100 Years of Magic” celebration, which honored Walt Disney’s 100th birthday and was initially supposed to be temporary. According to Disney, the hat was built as a representation of the magic of show business and the entertainment wizardry of…

    24 Oct 2014 | 3:12 pm
By Rikki Niblett ©Disney The lackluster attraction “The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is slated to close for good; its last day of operation is November 6. The interactive attraction takes guests through different pirate adventures in a room designed like a pirate’s cave lair. The attraction was pretty poorly presented and included sections where guests were supposed to chant and stomp their feet, which seemed to be geared more towards very young children. The show also featured somewhat scary confrontations with skeletons, singing…

When we were in Walt Disney World last month, we attended Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for the first time in four years, mostly so we could experience the new Villains’ Sinister Soiree: A Wicked Takeover of Cinderella Castle—because if they were charging $99/person on top of the cost of a party ticket that costs $62–$77/person, it must be starring Michael Jackson returned from the grave and feature brand-new Cadillacs as favors, right?! Despite not being a huge fan of character meet-n-greets, parades or stale candy, I was really looking forward to attending the…

On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…

    Carrie
    23 Sep 2014 | 10:00 am
The one thing Patrick absolutely had to do on our August trip to Walt Disney World was ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. When we realized his schedule only allowed us to try for it on a Saturday morning, we bit the bullet and made an early reservation at Crystal Palace for breakfast in order to get as close as we could to the rope before it dropped. (Do not fear for our immortal souls: They hold guests who are already in the park near Cosmic Ray’s until the guests at the gate have been escorted to that spot, so everyone gets the same shot at speed-walking toward the Mine Train.)…

When seeing Howlers Peak Ropes Course, my first thought was “wow, that is really high.” Second thought was, “And you are dangling up there by only a rope? Crazy!” Howlers Peak is a new outdoor activity at Great Wolf Lodge in Washington. You can climb up to 50 feet in the air, zoom down multiple zip lines, traverse narrow rope obstacles, and in the end you’ll want to do it all over again. It may look treacherous, but Howlers Peak is a lot of fun. To participate in Howlers Peak, you first need to get suited up in a full body harness. The harness gets tightened…
  • How to Use an Intel 2 in 1 Laptop to Display Photos on Your TV

We will have several family members visiting over the next few months, which means it is prime time to share some family photos. Most of our images are either saved on our computer or phone, which can make it difficult to share unless grandma and grandpa are sitting right next to you. Even then, no one really wants to squint at a picture on a small screen. We have an Intel powered 2 in 1 laptop and an Xbox 360 in our house, which is all we needed to do a photo slideshow on our family TV. To get the photos on the big screen, I just installed the OneDrive app on our laptop and then copied our…

I’m in Orlando this week for a business trip, but this visit is special because my wife and son came along with me. But we have a few days together at the tail end of the trip for some family fun. Most families probably think of mouse ears and castles when you mention an Orlando trip. But even though I have visited this area countless times, the Kennedy Space Center remains one of my favorite side trips. We often see space travel depicted by Hollywood, but we rarely…

It is safe to say that we have a high tech household. We have multiple tablets and computers. Each of us have a smartphone. We control our thermostat and sound system using WiFi. We have a lot of devices connected to the internet, which is why I couldn’t resist adding GE smart light bulbs to my cart when I saw them at The Home Depot.
