I kept saying I wasn’t going to write a report on Patrick’s crazy last-minute work trip to Walt Disney World a few weeks ago because I spent most of my time in the room working too. But when we did have a free moment to explore together, we noticed some pretty striking changes since our last visit, 18 months ago—enough that Patrick has been encouraging me to write about what we thought. (I’ll be doing a separate post on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.) The Re-Learning Curve I am a professional author and editor of guidebooks to the Disney parks, but it took me half a day at…

Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

Last week, rumors began circulating the internet that a Batmobile had been stolen from the set of Batman v. Superman. Why am I talking about this on a Disney blog? Because director, Zach Snyder tweeted out this picture with the caption, “Case closed.” Notice who the culprit seems to be? Everything seemed to be back to normal, but Abrams released a video yesterday of the Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars set. While it’s nice enough just to see Han Solo’s ship again, as you watch be sure to pay attention to the end (when the music changes) and you might catch a…

    18 Sep 2014 | 5:46 pm
Pogo, the stage name of music producer Nick Bertke, is back with a new Disney Pogoism. The artist blends voices and songs from Disney films and slyly cuts and remixes them to make a new song. This new one is called “The Trouble” and it features clips from Alice In Wonderland, Peter Pan, Aladdin, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, and Dumbo. It’s my understanding that Disney licenses Pogo’s movies. In this case Pogo cut the music and the video was edited by Joshua Kersaw. What do you think about The Trouble by Pogo? • Is Diagon Alley really a game-changer for the theme park industry?

    18 Sep 2014 | 10:55 am
By Robert Niles: Universal Orlando's new Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley clearly sets a new standard for themed entertainment environments in the United States. No other theme park land in the country so thoroughly infuses its space with all the elements that transport visitors into its narrative. But, when we look back at Diagon Alley in several years, will we see it as an outlier — an excellent space that remains far above all other theme park lands, or will we view it as a game-changer — a development that inspired theme park companies to rethink they way they develop…
  • Will 'Frozen' kill Epcot?

    16 Sep 2014 | 9:26 pm
By Robert Niles: Is replacing Maelstrom with a Frozen-themed ride going to kill Epcot? That's the fear expressed on social media by many Disney fans ever since Disney made the switch official last week.Yes, Disney's crossing a new line in creating a fictional setting for a World Showcase attraction. From Epcot's opening in 1982 until now, the theme of World Showcase has been a celebration of real countries from around the world. Although elements within attractions in those lands might be fictional, the setting of those attractions always have been someplace real. But let's keep things real by…

Daveland has just upgraded its collection! Today, I can present a beautifully sparkling color shot of the Arcturus Astrojet from March 1964. Previously, my best shot of it was this Black and White image:Just because I know this question will come up today, here's the answer: Arcturus is the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere and is part of the constellation Boötes. In ancient Greek, the name means "Guardian of the Bear." Prehistoric Polynesian navigators knew Arcturus as Hōkūleʻa, the "Star of Joy." Arcturus became famous in the US when its light was used to open the 1933…

You know I have to zoom in and pore over all the details.Check out the outfits. By looking at this detailed area, we can tell it must have been a hot day. The groom is a coworker of mine, and his beautiful bride is pretty much the most adorable (and fun) person you would care to meet. So often, meeting a good friend's significant other can be a cringe-worthy moment; not with these two. • Souvenir Friday- Ceramic Trinket Box and Trays

    19 Sep 2014 | 5:55 am
When I first began collecting Disneyland items back in the late 1980s, this souvenir was one of my favorite items. In fact, now that I look at it again, it is still one of my favorite items. The cover to the box features a great graphic with Tinkerbell and Sleeping Beauty Castle. I like the blue color used as the background. The neat thing about this souvenir are the two trays to hold things like rings and other items. Both features the Disneyland logo in the classic font. The back of the pieces are all marked with the mid-1960s style Disneyland logo in the berm.
  • More Movieland Wax Museum Buena Park, California

    18 Sep 2014 | 6:17 am
More images from Movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park California. The first image is outside the museum featuring the gold Rolls Royce and white neo-classical building. Unfortunately the camera was slightly out of focus (all right, almost totally out of focus) when this photograph was taken. The Rolls Royce was featured on many souvenirs including postcards, wallets and also decals. The second image is of the Marx Brothers from their classic 1930s film Animal Crackers. I like the posing of Harpo with the Harp and Groucho with his golf clubs.
  • Two Exhibits Movieland Wax Museum Buena Park

    17 Sep 2014 | 6:28 am
Taking a detour north on the 5 freeway to Buena Park to the Movieland Wax Museum. Opened in 1962 and sold to Six Flags in 1970, the attraction closed in 2005 with a giant auction of the wax figures and sets. The first image for today features Bela Lugosi and Helen Chandler in a scene from Dracula. The set design is really interesting and gives the tableaux a creepy setting. The second image is not really from a movie, but from a famous historical scene. The picture shows John F. Kennedy and his PT 109 during World War 2. I like the wet effect seen in this diorama.
  • its a small world Topiary

When its a small world was recreated based upon the original attraction in New York, the designers wanted to add to the visual excitement for the entrance. Three color snapshots of Frontierland. The first image features a great overhead view of the Mark Twain with the Disneyland band on the deck. The bright red color really attracts the eye and stand out against the white of the Mark Twain. The crowd is a very groovy collection of guests. The next two images are ones taken during a trip on the Mark Twain. First up is one of my favorite now gone sights, Cascade Peak with the Three Sisters falls. Final image is of the burning settler's cabin. This image shows the vibration of the engine when riding the Mark Twain, making the image appear almost…

    19 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are a couple of nice Tomorrowland views from some slightly oversized transparencies (just under 2" X 2" - is that "127" film?). In this first instance, the color had faded to a strange orangey pink, which is why it looks weird now. This is the best I could do. Still, it's a great look (from the Monorail platform?) at the Astro Jets, Rocket to the Moon, and Skyway. And I always enjoy seeing the mermaids in the sub lagoon. Bring them back! Even just for the summer. Nemo won't mind, I promise.

I hope the person before you didn't have head lice. Try not to think about it, I'm sure it will be fine. Dad is negotiating like he always does. "A dollar? Who do you think I am, John D. They found them and knew I'd be interested! This first one is great, a busy, lively look at early Frontierland as seen from the outdoor balcony of the building that housed the Golden Horseshoe Revue. The Gullywhumper is passing by - this one won't tip over because there's a nun aboard.  Lots of folks are over on Tom Sawyer Island (which looks pretty barren). There's Fort Wilderness, looking a bit soft-focus and dreamy. It's Ernie the Elk! It's just plain gorgeous, taken at the "Golden Hour" with some wintery clouds in the sky. A raft and canoe make the scene too, daddy-o. And it's always fun to see the Skyway tower where the Matterhorn would eventually be.Next we'll move ashore (and on to April, 1962); this time it's a beautiful…

Do you know what I say when I find a bunch of photos of a vintage Disney parade? Most of the time I say, "ARG!". Because there are usually 15 to 20 photos, all taken from the same vantage point, of endless not-very-interesting stuff. But today's pictures, from a year-old Walt Disney World, are pretty nice. I admit it.There goes the Disney World Band (that's probably not the right name). Look at the sideburns on that one guy! Yep, it's the 70's. I didn't storm the hills at Iwo Jima so that you could grow your hair so long, you hippie! Meanwhile, whenever I see a sign for GAF film, it makes me…

    Imagineer45
    18 Sep 2014 | 5:42 pm
When Disney built DCA, they had no idea on how the public would like the park. In order to be prepared in case the park needed an additional land or two, Disney built the park with a very big expansion pad (as most parks are wisely built with). DCA first dug into the expansion pad with "a bug's land" and quickly followed up by using the pad for the TZToT. And when DCA did its massive overhaul, they used up over half of the expansion pad for Cars Land. With that in mind, DCA still has an expansion pad left that can potentially fit an entire new land (or mini-lands, or Cars…
  • Question What's up with Pixie Hollow lately?

    Jayce
    18 Sep 2014 | 5:27 pm
Last Saturday they didn't have Tink there all day long (she was in the parade but they only had one Pixie at a time there) I heard yesterday they were alternating between Tink and Silvermist (only one at a time). Cut back on hours? Tinker Strike? I've also noticed they don't have as many photo pass people around. Sometimes when I'll visit in the first hour of park opening there won't be a photo pass photographer there at all. Also where Merida and Rapunzel/Belle meet half the time there's no photopass photographer either. /boggle

  • New Book Review: The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis & the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic

    11 Sep 2014 | 5:12 pm
It takes a long time to look through John Canemaker's new book  The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis and the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic, and it should. Nearly 300 pages are filled with examples of every aspect of Disney's production: drawings, model sheets, camera setups, and hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of how shots were achieved, animators at work, models posing for animators, reference photos of animals and humans, cels, drawings, the Burbank studio being built, "The Reluctant Dragon" live action production, Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio. Numerous examples of…
  • John Canemaker in Los Angeles: Thursday 9/11 at the Central Library, LACMA on Saturday, September 13: Gertie, Fantasia and...SCHULTHEIS!

    7 Sep 2014 | 10:57 pm
It's always an event when John Canemaker comes to Los Angeles-literally. In 2012 he was here to present and moderate a program honoring the work of John and Faith Hubley, a fascinating and wonderful evening.  Now in September we have an embarrassment of riches. This coming Thursday it's a double dose of Canemaker and author and author/librarian Christina Rice, both authors of new books on the enigmatic Herman Schultheis. They'll be reading and signing in downtown's Central Library from 6 to 8pm, and the event is free. Then on Saturday, a triple threat: on Saturday, Sept. 13th,…
  • Women In Animation

    14 Mar 2014 | 2:54 pm
This Saturday, March 15, I'm moderating a panel at the Walt Disney Family Museum where I'll be talking with Claire Keane, Lorelay Bove, and Brenda Chapman about their experiences in the animation business, and their lives as animation artists.Last October the museum also asked if I would write an essay for their quarterly on the subject of women in animation, past and present, which follows here.In the 1970s there was one must-have for every aspiring young animator's bookshelf: Christopher Finch's oversized, heavy and beautiful The Art of Walt Disney.  Illustrated books detailing the…
  • Magic! Color! FLAIR! The World of Mary Blair exhibit is opening March 13, 2014

    12 Mar 2014 | 2:12 pm
Is there anyone in animation who isn't excited by the work of Mary Blair?  Oh, probably a few misanthropes or those who go the contrarian route, but Blair's gargantuan reputation grows year after year for good reason. Many have spoken and written about her influence more eloquently than I ever could, but nothing beats seeing the real thing, up close and personal. To this end the Walt Disney Family Museum is opening the largest show to date of Blair's accomplishments both inside and outside animation.  Curated by Oscar-winning animator, writer (and Blair biographer) and NYU professor…
  • Michael Sporn 1946-2014 "The wind is rising...we must try to live."

    30 Jan 2014 | 3:11 pm
Michael Sporn looking over Richard Williams' shoulder during production of "Raggedy Ann and Andy". Photograph by John Canemaker, from his book.Last weekend, thanks in large part to three consecutive days off, I was finally able to watch a few screeners. One of them was Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises", which I'd been very much looking forward to(happily subtitled instead of dubbed-always the way I prefer to go).  I knew the basics of the story-that it was about the life of the designer of the Japanese Zero fighter plane, Jiro Horikoshi, albeit somewhat fictionalized, and that as a…

  • An Ode to the Vacation Kingdom of the World

    Suzannah Mitchell
    11 Sep 2014 | 5:06 pm
During a visit to Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground a few months back, I was filled with an epic case of nostalgia regarding what our beloved Walt Disney World was like when it opened back in 1971. I instantly wanted to write an article reflecting on my thoughts and how things were way back then. Granted, I wasn’t born then, but a handful of years later, I’d be celebrating my first visit to the Vacation Kingdom of the World. After a more recent visit to celebrate Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue’s 40th anniversary, I was reminded that I really needed…

How fitting that these sad little gargoyles line the walkway to the entrance of Magic Kingdom’s Be Our Guest Restaurant. Undoubtedly the hottest reservation to score for guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort. Aloha! I want to start by apologizing for not having a post on the 4th. I was extremely busy that week, getting ready to leave Hawaii. That’s all done now, and my family and I are spending some time with family on our way to my new duty station. The first thing that we did when we got to the mainland was visit Disneyland Resort. What an adventure that was! Our long trip began on a Monday evening. About two weeks prior to leaving Hawaii, I shipped my van to Los Angeles. So, although my family felt that familiar Disney welcome when we arrived at Aulani this summer, we knew ahead of time that it would take some time to get familiar with the ins and outs of the resort.

A couple weeks ago, Patrick was sent to Walt Disney World on a top-secret project, and I got to tag along. (And when I can tell you more about what he was working on, I surely will!) I’m working on a post about all the differences we noticed after an 18-month absence that included the introduction of MyMagic+, but it’s kinda depressing me just writing about it, so here’s something AWESOME we saw instead! Just days before we left, the first photos emerged of the newly remodeled Captain Cook’s counter-service restaurant at the Polynesian (Village) Resort. I immediately…

We’ve had a handful of opportunities to visit Club 33 over the years, and though I’ve had the best intentions of writing up a trip report each time, I’ve just never gotten around to it. Memorable experiences include my Birthday No. 33 at Club 33, a Ryman Arts Foundation breakfast, and the time Patrick arrived with food poisoning, tossed his cookies into the lobby wastebasket, and still had to pay $90 for a meal he didn’t get. But most of my reports would have been about the same: celebrating some milestone, drooling over the historical details, snarking about the Blue…

My absolute favorite part of the Walt Disney Family Museum is their ginormous “Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination” model in the last room. I think it might be Patrick’s too, because he took more than a hundred photos of it on our visit last month. If I stick all of these in the already-picture-packed next installment of my Walt Disney Family Museum Weekend Getaway trip report, it might break your eyeballs. So here is a separate post devoted entirely to Patrick’s photo tour of that 12-foot model. Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination was designed to capture his…

It’s not all non-stop Disney, but it might give you some ideas of sights to see when you’re in the Bay Area visiting the museum yourself. We wanted a whole day to spend at WDFM, so on our first travel day we decided to check out a different museum, Filoli. This was the main estate of the family that owned the gold mine across the street from my childhood home in Grass Valley. It was one of those places I’d always heard about but never seen, and now…

After a few weeks of unpacking, we finally had a weekend where we could just relax and have fun. My son and I played football in the backyard. We took the dogs for a walk. And we took time to play with some toys. The latest addition to the toy box is the Hot Wheels Hyper Racer Light and Sound Spin King from Toy State. This car has an impressive light show, which instantly made it one of my son’s favorite toys to play with. The Hot Wheels Hyper Racer has a translucent body that appears blue, but changes colors at the press of a button. There are several lights in the body of the car…

The weather is perfect for coffee, but you don’t have to bundle up too much outdoors. The leaves begin to show their colors. And it always feels great to take a walk in the crisp air. Autumn also means that I won’t have to mow my lawn as often, which is nice. But until all of those…

The license plate game. I-Spy. Countless rounds of 100 bottles of root beer on the wall. This is what I remember of the road trips from my childhood. Sure, the scenery was nice. But as a kid, the charm wore off quickly and even the best road trip games did little to stave off the boredom. These days, we are lucky enough to have tablets and smartphones so we can play games or watch movies wherever we go. Chevrolet is even bringing built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi to their cars, trucks and crossover vehicles. Now your passengers can watch Netflix on the go, which makes me really wish something like this…

There are few things that I like more than a clean house. I just can’t sit still when I see clutter, a dirty floor, or dishes in the sink. While it may seem odd to some, I enjoy cleaning the house and bringing order back after the dogs and my son have done their worst. With our big move to Seattle, I had two homes to clean. Our house in Oregon had to be cleaned out for the next owners. The new place in Seattle was kind of clean, but you could tell it still needed a deep clean. There were still food odors from the former owners and their kids left behind handprints and carpet stains. It was…

It felt odd when I realized everything I owned could fit inside a giant moving truck. It felt even more bizarre to see the truck drive away. After months of planning, we loaded the dogs into the car, locked the front door one last time, and set the GPS on our T-Mobile 4G tablet to our new address in Seattle. Moving to a new state was bittersweet. There is excitement about the new job and our new home. There is also a lot we will miss from our little farming town in Oregon. The job opportunities were limited in Oregon, but it was pretty neat to have farmers as neighbors. We always had fresh…
