Beer is perhaps one of mankind’s oldest fermented beverages. Sometimes called natures “Perfect Food”, beer has been documented as far back as the 5th millennium BC. Beer is produced from cereals containing sugars, and as ancient man advanced from hunter-gathers to farmers and herdsman and domesticated cereal, the popular beverage began its long history. But the ancient beer did not ape the product we all know today. In the beginning it was more of a gruel, very thick and sweet. It took many thousands of years of trial and error for it to resemble the drink we know today. In fact beer…

Walt Disney from the beginning has always made it a practice to give back to the community. As far back and 1948, the Disney Company designed the Logo for the “Toys for Tots” program. After his death, the Disney Company continues to give back to the community it serves in many ways. And like Walt Disney Company, the World Chapter branch of the Disneyana fan club continues in this worthy tradition of giving back and making the world a bit better place to live in. On January 13th, the club donated a check of $10,000 dollars to the Walt Disney Pavilion; Children’s Hospital at Florida…

On January 21st, 1961 the Walt Disney Company released its seventeenth animated feature, “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”. The story was taken from a 1956 book by English playwright and novelist Dodie Smith. As with many of the films taken from stories and fairy tales, the Disney version is slightly changed. Even the title of the movie is a bit different than the book, which Dodie penned “The One Hundred and One Dalmatians” However, the standout character of both versions is the villainous Cruella de Vil, whom is noted for her love of very high temperatures, pepper, a hatred of…

There is probably no one in the world that does know the name of Walt Disney and the rich legacy he and his studio have left to the world. For millions of people, he has left cherished memories of classic cartoons, animated features, theme parks and of course, some of the most unforgettable songs in history. From the earliest beginnings to his untimely passing, Walt always hired the most talented and resourceful people, for he insisted on only the best quality product, and would settle for no less. The music and songs are synonymous with his cinematic masterpieces. Even the theme parks and…

Much like Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, Clara made several appearances in the early Mickey shorts, (Much less than the former) and ironically, just like Horace and Clarabelle bowed out of the scene in the short, “Symphony Hour” in 1942. • Disneyland Prepares to Welcome a new Haunt in its Mansion

    30 Jan 2015 | 9:13 pm
By Robert Niles: Disneyland's adding something to its Haunted Mansion, but the park isn't yet saying what that will be. Disney just finished removing the Mansion's annual holiday overlay, and sharp-eyed visitors have noticed the addition of a new, opaque window on the roof of the mansion as the Doombuggies exit the attic into the graveyard. And today, Disneyland confirmed that will be the location of something new in the mansion. Disney teased the addition in a Disney Parks Blog post:"Those with a keen eye will notice something strange when they leave the mansion and enter its spooky cemetery…
  • Vote of the Week: Football or Theme Parks?

    30 Jan 2015 | 11:21 am
By Robert Niles: It's almost Super Bowl Sunday in the United States, when the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks this year will play for the National Football League championship. Among theme park fans, Super Bowl Sunday used to be "go to Disneyland Sunday," as thinking was that so many people would be watching the big game that the park would be relatively empty for the rest of us. That hasn't been the case in years, though. Huge numbers of local annual passholders typically crowd the park on Sundays, when fewer passes are blocked out than on Saturdays. The lack of an NFL team in the…

This most recent visit to Disneyland was one of those rare times that we climbed up Tarzan's Treehouse. I love the views, and I also love checking out all the details, but once the crowds begin to hit the Park, I typically avoid this place like the plague. As you can see, there were some from our group that…well, avoided this attraction like the plague, and instead, waved to us from below! This bridge is one of the reasons I do not like to be on this attraction when there are too many peeps in the Park; it makes me queasy as it sways!Yet…as you can see, some of the views are…

    30 Jan 2015 | 4:30 am
I have become a New Year's Resolution cliché. My most recent stay at the Chateau Marmont allowed me the time I needed to jumpstart my nonexistent workout and running routine. One of the little known extras at my favorite hotel is its physical fitness facility, tucked away in what was probably designed to be an attic. The door is numbered on the outside as if it were just another guest room. Instead, you are greeted by a punching bag and water cooler. There are also two chairs and a desk with a phone, presumably for those who don't feel the need to sweat while on vacation.I love the vaulted…

Welcome back to pt. 2 of my January 2015 trip through the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland. We begin at the battle involving the Wicked Wench!I love the smokey smell in this seemingly HUUUUUGE area. You feel like you are drifting through the middle of the ocean, with canon fire volleying overhead.Unlike other ride throughs, I pretty much stuck to the scenery on my side of the boat, rather than frantically attempting to shoot each side. That can really get exhausting. Typically, I sit on the left side of the boat because the Wench Auction is my very favorite scene. No, I am…

Come join me for my gajillionth ride upon the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland! It was a beautiful sunny day, as can be seen from the crow's nest of Tarzan's Treehouse, facing the exterior of the attraction building. Here's a completely different viewpoint of the façade, looking up from the depths of the line queue:Commemorating the attraction's 30th anniversary back in 1997, this plaque/fountain has always been a favorite of mine:Everyone now and then I attempt to update shots from my collection; it had been about 2 years since I'd taken any of the portraits in the line queue. Discovering new details at Disneyland, no matter how insignificant, typically adds a jolt of excitement for me. I was surprised to notice the back of this sign, which shows four bullet holes and a yellowed playing card. Not sure where it fits into the scheme of things, but it gave me something to do with my camera as we entered the line queue for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Wonder what's in the box shown below? The Panhandle Hotel is one of the few buildings in Rainbow Ridge that I cannot find a counterpart for from the original Nature's Wonderland attraction that was located in this spot…

  • Souvenir Friday- Plaza Inn Serving Tray

    30 Jan 2015 | 6:35 am
One of my favorite spots in Disneyland is the Plaza Inn, once known as the Red Wagon Inn. For many years the Colombian Coffee Growers sponsored the restaurant. The food served at the Plaza Inn has not changed much and it is still the place to go for Fried Chicken. The design of the tray focuses on the coffee growers and not much on the architecture of the restaurant although the border detail is very Victorian and fits into the Main Street design. This is also a larger size tray than the first two I posted.
  • Autopia and Monorails

    29 Jan 2015 | 6:59 am
Two more red slides, this time featuring the Tomorrowland Autopia and the Disneyland Monorail. The first image shows a gaggle(herd, colony, flock, pod, murder, brood) of Autopia cars waiting to be put on the track and driven by guests. Note the great Disneyland license plate on one of the cars. The next image shows the lovely freeway of tomorrow with the Alweg Monorail station in the background. The soft colors are nice in this shot. Note the rear license plates on the car in the middle of the image.

    28 Jan 2015 | 6:37 am
Two more slides in the grouping of red tinted slides. First up an image of a speeding Monorail in front of the Matterhorn. The juxtaposition of nature and technology leads to a great scene. Unfortunately the hand that held the camera was not very steady (and the film stock turned completely red.) The second image shows the walkway towards the mountain. Not many images were taken from this angle.
  • The Lovely Matterhorn

    27 Jan 2015 | 7:22 am
I recently acquired a small set of slides that unfortunately had turned completely red. I was hoping that the magic of Photoshop would bring the slides back to life. It is interesting to see if color correction will work on slides. Within the same batch of slides, color correction will be great and the color comes back and other times it still has the red tones that never quite disappear. The first image still has touches of red. The photo features a Horse Drawn Surrey, posters at the front of Tomorrowland and signage for the Monsanto Home of the Future. (Looking at it now, I think I need to…

Nothing brightens up my day more than a nice photograph (or two) of the attraction posters in action. These two images show the poster fence at the entrance to Disneyland. The first image shows the train in station and a very uncrowded entrance plaza. Some very nice and rare posters are on display. The second image shows the other posters that are in the shade in the first image. Also the Kalamazoo handcar is visible.

Today's post is an odd one! So here's the deal: each night I spend about 5 minutes on FaceBook. I'm not into it very much, but I do like to see what's what on the vintage Disneyland pages, as well as a few others. Many months ago (maybe a year, by now), somebody mentioned that a second "House of the Future" had been built, years ago. WHAT? Could this be true? Why didn't I get the memo?? How can I use this information for fame and profit? Here's what the one at Disneyland looked like, for those of you who don't remember. At some point, one of the FB folks said that the other house was located in…
  • Walt Disney World Carousel

    31 Jan 2015 | 12:01 am
Last week I was going through the scans that I had made of my friend Rol Summit's personal Viewmaster photos. Rol and his wife Jo are well-known collectors and restorers of antique carousel animals - not just horses either. Sea monsters, tigers, dragons, giraffes, ostriches, lions… you name it. Maybe I'll show some of his photos of those, at some point.Among the pictures was a series of reels taken during Rol's visit to Arrow Dynamics in Mountain View, California… sometime around 1970-ish (I would assume). Disneyland die-hards will recognize the name "Arrow Dynamics" as the company that…

Here are two more images from a series of beautiful slides from 1958! The color and clarity are great. Here's a nice portrait of the Main Street Cinema. I remember camping out for three days to see The Empire Strikes Back here. But when I got inside, it was a bunch of silent black-and-white movies. Hey, what gives?! Did I mention that I camped out in my parent's back yard? It seemed like a good idea at the time.Suave Ronald Colman stars in "Lady Windermere's Fan"… I assume Lady Windermere played baseball, and had to deal with a lot of crazy fans. It looks like a Marx wind-up toy chugging past a paper mache mountain, with a plastic waterfall and trees made of dyed-green sponge and wire. This is the toy train I'm thinking of!Meanwhile, Chief Wavy is doing what he does best. Waving! He also hums 60's French pop songs, but you usually can't hear that unless you are right up close.

Color is overrated! It's so confusing. Cobalt blue! Viridian green! HELIOTROPE! It's too much, I tells ya. Why do you think all the kids are twerking? Color, that's why. In order to make a difference, I am sharing some calming, old-fashioned black and white snapshots. But I'm not a hero! I'm just an ordinary Joe who loves his country. I love this first one for several reasons… first, I always love seeing the Tomorrowland Spaceman. He doesn't really fit in today's version of the land, but there's a part of me that would still enjoy seeing him (and the Space Girl) back, shaking hands and…

Reflector puts your iOS screen on a Mac, PC or Android device by acting as an AirPlay receiver. AirPlay is already built into iOS, but you'll need to buy a version for the device you want to mirror to. The Windows and Mac versions cost $12.99 each (no bundle), and the Android version is $6.99. After you install it, mirror your iPhone or iPad with the AirPlay icon in the control center. Reflector lets you record the broadcast from your iOS device, so it's great for training. Murray Vs…

After about 3 minutes he got tired and moved along with grandpa, leaving me still shooting. After about 5 minutes I thought this was quite a generous shooting gallery. After about 15 minutes, and after hitting every single target many, many times, I decided to finally walk away. Best 50 cents spent ever!!

I recently reserved a Carthay Circle Restaurant World of Color Dinner package for late March, but have some questions and am hoping some of you with more experience with this will help enlighten me. We have never been to CCR, but we are big foodies. As I understand it, the WOC dining package at CCR was changed at some point (quite a while back) to a special menu with a choice of soup and salad, a choice of entree, and a limited choice of desserts. I remember reading somewhere that you may still be…

Who doesn’t love a Mickey Waffle? We’ve dedicated lots of posts to this beloved treat here on the blog. In fact, it’s probably one of the only universal Mickey shaped foods that can be found throughout all Disney parks.   We’ve got them here in the states at the Disneyland Resort and they’re aplenty in Walt Disney World.  I’ve also had one at Aulani.  I saw them at Disneyland Paris, and I’ve seen photos of them from Hong Kong. Waldorf Astoria Orlando lobby I’ve been lucky enough to stay at, tour, and even just visit more than my fair share of hotels and resorts, especially in the last 6 years with this site. While staying at an official Disney resort has its perks, I must say [whispers so Mickey doesn’t hear], there are some resorts nearby to give Disney a run for the money. Now before you die-hard Disney resort fans start protesting, please just keep reading and see if you agree when all is said and done. 26 Oct 2014 | 12:47 pm
I began writing this as a caption to a photo I had posted before on Instagram, of a hat-free view of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (of course, then known as Disney-MGM Studios). My thoughts got away from me, and I had soon reached “caption limit” on Instagram, so I copied and pasted what I’d been writing into my “Notes” on my phone. I had never before written a blog post on my phone, save for very short updates about new purses being released while I may have been away from my laptop. But I was lost in the moment, and just kept typing. What follows is that…

runDisney Racecations can be both exilerating and exhausting. Earlier this month I participated in the runDisney Dopey Challenge. Four races (5K, 10K, Half Marathon & Full Marathon) run over four consecutive days with four consecutive 3:30 am wake-up calls. These events don’t leave much time for park touring. I knew that I would need a comfortable place to sleep and I wasn’t too concerned with staying in a Disney owned and operated hotel that came with extra magic hour perks since I really wasn’t going to be partaking in extra park time. I was there to run. The fun would…

    30 Jan 2015 | 8:00 am
Whether you love or hate the Sorcerer’s Hat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it’s been bittersweet, yet fascinating to watch it’s removal.  After the official announcement in October 2014 that the Sorcerer’s Hat would be removed, things were pretty quiet until January 7, 2015, when familiar “pardon our dust” fences were installed.  Shortly thereafter, demolition equipment arrived and the slow deconstruction of the Disney’s Hollywood Studio‘s centerpiece began. In honor of the Sorcerer’s Hat, here are a few images from over the years.

For the past few weeks, I have been taking an introductory animation course at my school. Even though I plan on majoring in Illustration, I decided to briefly delve into animation just so I could get a taste of the methods and work that go on behind the scenes. I always assumed that animating was time-consuming, but I never really understood it first-hand until now. For this class, we are required to do all of the animation either hand-drawn or using paper cut-outs, sand, or paint which make the process even longer and more meticulous. This picture of a cat is actually a still from a short…

During lunch on my birthday, my family and I were having one of the most common conversations any “Disney” household has… missing Walt Disney World. After talking so much about wanting to go, my mom asked us all, “If you could be anywhere in WDW right now, where would you be and what would you be doing???”. We ask this question a lot. The possibilities are endless, but I always seem to have a similar answer (with certain details changing with my mood). I thought that it would be a great topic to talk about, and I’m very excited about it! Here is what…

So this is love. The song I most clearly remember from Disney’s animated classic Cinderella is “So This is Love.” She dances with the prince. She gazes into his eyes. She can’t believe she’s there, at the palace, dancing with the one man who could change her life. Cinderella, the life of a young woman changed in one night because she dared to dream.

As I was leaving Fantasyland,  near the entrance of Enchanted Tales with Belle, I was stopped in my tracks as the music started and fireworks shot into the sky. I always assumed that animating was time-consuming, but I never really understood it first-hand until now. For this class, we are required to do all of the animation either hand-drawn or using paper cut-outs, sand, or paint which make the process even longer and more meticulous. By Derek Burgan It’s January and that means we are in a whole new year. It’s going to be hard to top 2014. We had Disney Imagineers with 9 foot shovels in Animal Kingdom.  We had a commercial with featured both the Seven Dwarfs and rap music (which, by the way, wasn’t even the weirdest commercial Disney did last year). It was a year we discovered that the Pop Century Resort offered a sandwich that used Pop Tarts as the bread.  It was a year that we lost Push the talking trashcan, the Giggle Gang, and Camp Minnie Mickey, but gained a whole lot of Anna and Elsa. What will…

  • Chasing Fireflies Has Sweet Apparel for Valentines Day

    Dan
    26 Jan 2015 | 11:28 pm
It is a truth of parenthood. After your child arrives, going out to a nice restaurant becomes a rare treat. Being new to Seattle, we have not yet found a sitter and all of our family live in other states. Having a night out meant one thing – we had to make a gentleman out of our mud covered boy. I was looking through the latest Chasing Fireflies catalog and saw that they had a few suits for little boys. But let’s face it, most children will balk at the thought of wearing a stuffy suit. If I was going to dress up my son, he needed something hip that exuded the swagger of James…
  • Get Ready for the Big Game with this Sweet SNICKERS Treat

    26 Jan 2015 | 9:32 am
With the big game around the corner, there is a lot of excitement in Seattle. Nearly everyone is wearing their blue and green and “12” flags can be seen on most buildings. It is fun to see the city come together like this. Our family is getting ready to watch the game at home. The pillows on the couch are fluffed, the fridge is stocked with beverages, and we bought several types of snacks and appetizers. My wife usually makes brownies with SNICKERS® baked into them (which is even better when topped with vanilla ice cream). This year, I decided to try my hand at making my own…

I don’t often think about my car’s horsepower, but when I do, I am rushing to get somewhere, trying to merge onto the freeway, or hauling a bunch of supplies from The Home Depot. We live up on the Sammamish plateau which, if you live in the greater Seattle area, you either know as “the east side” or “that place where all the Microsoft employees live.” Getting to the Sammamish plateau requires climbing a 615 foot hill, usually in the rain, while navigating a windy little road. This soggy commute is usually a drag, but this week was a little different. I had…

    11 Jan 2015 | 8:02 pm
The Disney company is known for packing details into every space, which gives even the most frequent visitor something new to see. During a recent visit to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, I snapped a few photos of some neat little details that are often overlooked. Cinderella Drinking Fountain In the castle courtyard, there is a neat fountain with a bronze figure of Cinderella, depicted in her peasant clothes and talking with the mice and birds. Around the fountain and statue are several drinking fountains, which were intentionally placed at a low level. To get a drink of water, you…

After hearing so much about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we decided to break away from the mouse house and spent some time at Universal Orlando.
