    1 Sep 2014 | 8:40 am
For the past several months, I have been covering the beautiful and detailed pavilions around World Showcase, and today we’ll take a look at Canada. Our ally and neighbor to the north have some of the most beautiful scenery and is the second largest country in area after Russia. The country was first settled by the French, but in 1763, Great Britain took control. With both countries colonizing the land, both French and English is spoken. In 1867 the British North America Act united English-speaking Upper Canada (Ontario) and French-speaking Lower Canada (Quebec) with Nova Scotia and New…

Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

  • Kelcie and Larry get married at Disneyland

    John Frost
    14 Sep 2014 | 4:50 am
Kelcie and Larry are high school sweethearts that just got married at Disneyland. That story is not unusual, but Larry was struck by a drunk driver and severely injured in an accident just one day before he was going to propose to Kelcie. The injury left him brain damaged and requiring the use of a wheelchair. The couple decided to have their dream wedding anyway and launched a kickstarter campaign to make it happen. That fundraiser went viral and they were able to have their ceremony, and thanks to Disney, their honeymoon at the Happiest Place on Earth just last week. So if you’re…

At times the queue was 5+ hours long to see Disney’s latest stars. Have you explored the “Norsk Kultur: inspiration for Disney Frozen” exhibit inside the Stave Church? It’s not much, but it’s the perfect exhibit to show how the movie and the pavilion are inextricably linked. The movie obviously drew a lot of its inspiration from Norway, but was set in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle. Fictional, because…

Disneyland, on the other hand, has spread the season out over both its theme parks. The color was great, the stretch was comfortable, and the size was perfect. Best of all, I could wear this around all day and feel like I was wearing PJ’s. One thing I absolutely love about the simple crop top is its versatility. You can dress it up, make it look laid back, or even make it look sporty. My favorite way to wear the crop top is by wearing a tight mini skirt along with some nice pumps! As usual, here are some…

I forgot about these bad guys! While I was sitting at my desk working away tonight I opened my drawer and found these guys staring back at me. Every time I’ve visited Disneyland since my trip in 2008 with my best pal, I’ve picked up a packet of these. It was the last thing I did at 11pm on my visit last week on the day of my birthday; I visited the World of Disney store to buy these and a lovely Christmas decoration. I snacked on these when I returned home on Sunday and stashed the last half a dozen of them in my desk drawer for safe keeping. So safe I forgot about them; like a…

I ran my first 13.1 miles at the 2010 Disneyland Half. How fitting that my 10th be at the same event. Full circle. Warm and fuzzies. MILEstone.   In honor of my 10th half marathon-iversary, I thought I’d pay homage to the distance. It’s a great race. I started to think about why I love it so much and as I brainstormed it occurred to me to loop other folks in on the discussion.

In case you missed it, part of the new iPhones' (and Apple Watch's) functionality will be the ability to "tap and pay" with the devices at many retailers across the country. This post is a tribute to the people of New York City who literally took the hit for the U.S. and instead of wilting under the tragedy, they showed a spirit of courage and care that still serves as an inspiration for the rest of the world. This shot shows the original Statue of Liberty flame, housed inside the statue. Dave DeCaro
    10 Sep 2014 | 5:45 am
Standing in Central Plaza, Disneyland guests of the 1950s were at the border of Tomorrowland. The gleaming white plastic Monsanto House of the Future is the main focal point of this slide: MY main point of interest in this image is the entrance to Snow Hill. Walking up the small set of steps, guests could climb a little mound of earth and neck the afternoon away. The Matterhorn would eventually take this spot over and change all of that! How about this Skyway shot? Taken as the buckets floated over Snow Hill, you can see Tomorrowland ahead (the Autopia, the Space Bar…) and even get the…

  • Kiddie Car Rides

    11 Sep 2014 | 6:03 am
Two different snapshots of kiddie car rides at unknown carnivals or fairs. The first image is of a nice ride with classic 1930s style cars with a very rustic track and rustic piping to move the ride. The main kid in his sailor hat is very cute. The second picture is of a more modern kiddie car ride with more streamlined cars. The mechanism to run the ride is hid under the planking and the fence is definitely more sturdy. The kids in this picture are just as cute.
  • Storybook and Dumbo Circa 1956

Two fun snapshots that border on the artistic. First up is the Storybook Canal Boats and Casey Junior with the landscaping reading Story out front. The little circus train always cheers me up. The second photograph is a great abstract style photograph featuring a dream like image of Dumbo flying high over the park. The movement of the attraction is captured in this image.

Two black and white snapshots from Storybook circa 1956. First up is Monstro the whale who not only swallows the boats guests ride on, but also swallows the Chicken of the Sea Pirate ship. Check out those big teeth. The next image is of guests leaving from the dock on one of the boats. In the background is the circus tent left over from the Mickey Mouse Club Circus and now used by Professor George J. Keller and his trained lion and tiger act. Note the cast member who is running the boat and narrating is male. For many years in the 1960s to the 1990s, the Storybook boats were operated by…

Two more images from an August 3, 1967 trip to Disneyland. The day was warm, but the Jungle River Cruise is always nice and cool. First up is a momma elephant protecting her baby from a crocodile. The crocodile looks a little albino. The photographer liked waterfalls and snapped this image of a small waterfall on the Jungle Cruise. If I flipped the photo, everyone would recognize the back side of water.

    14 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
I am STILL going through my lot of August 1969 slides, trying to use up the dross and dreck, leaving behind only sparkling gems! This first one shows a lot of stuff (Tom Sawyer Island, the Mark Twain, one of Huck Finn's rafts, the Matterhorn, and so on), though it is all seen poorly. Notice the enormous crowds along the shore, waiting to see the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction!A canoe glides by, almost completely silently, before vanishing behind the trees.Cascade Peak's waterfall was a lovely sight; it was fun to pass beneath (in a Mine Train), and fun to scoot past in a canoe…

Digging through a box of vintage slides is an interesting experience. You can see hundreds and hundreds of family photos, and most are pretty dull, but occasionally one will stand out from the rest. Like today's examples!I love this one, with two ladies out for an evening of fun (with their husbands, presumably). The woman to the right went the extra mile with her sparkly ensemble and white gloves! But what I really like is that they are at a tiki-themed establishment (A bar? Nightclub? Restaurant?), and are risking having their hands bitten off by that ferocious fellow. I wonder if he was…
  • Main Street in the Morning, September 1969

    12 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
Technically this is a "leftuggies" post, but these are some pretty nice photos, if I do say so myself. Man oh man, do I love this picture! Our photographer must have been the first person to enter the park. There's not a soul to be seen! Long shadows stretch across Main Street on a perfect, sunny morning. Sleeping Beauty Castle appears to be so far away, partly due to the soft cool colors that were used (just for that very purpose), and partly because of the atmosphere. I choose to believe that it is just morning mist and not smog! Don't you wish you were there?Zooming in a bit toward…
  • Oranges and Flowers, August 1960

    11 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
Today's first image is probably not very interesting to most Disneyland fans. You have to be a super Disneyland nerd like your old pal Major Pepperidge! As you can see, a stylish (dapper?) blond lady is posing next to a fruit-laden orange tree - presumably one of the trees left over from when the property was a thriving orchard. If only some of those trees still survived. They could graft scions to some sturdy root stock and sell actual Disneyland orange trees to weirdos like me.In the background is the Red Wagon Inn. I'd like to sit on the porch and enjoy my meal as the sun set and the…

    10 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two more interesting pictures from a series of photos from March of 1958. One of the things I like about this lot is that the sky is so dark and dramatic, while the foreground is bathed in warm sunlight. Theatrical! We're looking down upon the Storybook Land (or is it "Story Book Land"?) Canal Boats and the Casey Jr. Circus Train, with shiny Monstro eating canal boats like Pringles potato chips. Notice the little ticket booth in the lower right. Also of interest, at the very bottom of the image we can see just a bit of the construction for the "Alice in Wonderland" dark ride.I'm…

We are really not into the trick-or-treating thing, we wanted to just go to Disneyland and enjoy the park. I have no idea how the Mickey's Halloween Party works, does Disneyland close earlier leaving us with less time to enjoy the park? I'm just wondering if it's a waste of our time to go to Disneyland if we aren't intrested in trick-or-treating.

I just looked at the park hours calendar and noticed that this week on Thursday (the 18th) Disneyland is only open from 9-5. Why is that?
  • Question Giving Matterhorn one more try.....which side?

    GraceLovesGoofy
    14 Sep 2014 | 1:39 pm
We will be in the parks next month for our annual visit. This will be our last one for who knows how long. There are just so many other places we want to see that aren't Disney....I know! blasphemy! So we want to do the matterhorn because we have avoided it our last few trips since its known to beat the heck out of us. But this time our granddaughter, 12, will be with us and matterhorn is one of her favorite rides. I remember people saying one side is a better ride than the other. Is the slightly less brutal side the one on the Autopia side? And I'd like opinions of if it really is a little…

  • New Book Review: The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis & the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic

    11 Sep 2014 | 5:12 pm
It takes a long time to look through John Canemaker's new book  The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis and the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic, and it should. Nearly 300 pages are filled with examples of every aspect of Disney's production: drawings, model sheets, camera setups, and hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of how shots were achieved, animators at work, models posing for animators, reference photos of animals and humans, cels, drawings, the Burbank studio being built, "The Reluctant Dragon" live action production, Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio. Numerous examples of…
  • John Canemaker in Los Angeles: Thursday 9/11 at the Central Library, LACMA on Saturday, September 13: Gertie, Fantasia and...SCHULTHEIS!

    7 Sep 2014 | 10:57 pm
It's always an event when John Canemaker comes to Los Angeles-literally. In 2012 he was here to present and moderate a program honoring the work of John and Faith Hubley, a fascinating and wonderful evening.  Now in September we have an embarrassment of riches. This coming Thursday it's a double dose of Canemaker and author and author/librarian Christina Rice, both authors of new books on the enigmatic Herman Schultheis. They'll be reading and signing in downtown's Central Library from 6 to 8pm, and the event is free. Then on Saturday, a triple threat: on Saturday, Sept. 13th,…
  • Women In Animation

    14 Mar 2014 | 2:54 pm
This Saturday, March 15, I'm moderating a panel at the Walt Disney Family Museum where I'll be talking with Claire Keane, Lorelay Bove, and Brenda Chapman about their experiences in the animation business, and their lives as animation artists.Last October the museum also asked if I would write an essay for their quarterly on the subject of women in animation, past and present, which follows here.In the 1970s there was one must-have for every aspiring young animator's bookshelf: Christopher Finch's oversized, heavy and beautiful The Art of Walt Disney.  Illustrated books detailing the…
  • Magic! Color! FLAIR! The World of Mary Blair exhibit is opening March 13, 2014

    12 Mar 2014 | 2:12 pm
Is there anyone in animation who isn't excited by the work of Mary Blair?  Oh, probably a few misanthropes or those who go the contrarian route, but Blair's gargantuan reputation grows year after year for good reason. Many have spoken and written about her influence more eloquently than I ever could, but nothing beats seeing the real thing, up close and personal. To this end the Walt Disney Family Museum is opening the largest show to date of Blair's accomplishments both inside and outside animation.  Curated by Oscar-winning animator, writer (and Blair biographer) and NYU professor…

    30 Jan 2014 | 3:11 pm
Michael Sporn looking over Richard Williams' shoulder during production of "Raggedy Ann and Andy". Photograph by John Canemaker, from his book.Last weekend, thanks in large part to three consecutive days off, I was finally able to watch a few screeners. One of them was Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises", which I'd been very much looking forward to(happily subtitled instead of dubbed-always the way I prefer to go).  I knew the basics of the story-that it was about the life of the designer of the Japanese Zero fighter plane, Jiro Horikoshi, albeit somewhat fictionalized, and that as a…

    Kim
    12 Sep 2014 | 12:00 pm
Join me in welcoming guest author Lottie Linter with a review of The Steakhouse in the Disney Village at Disneyland Paris! Unlike Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney, the Disney Village at Disneyland Paris is where you’ll find most of the table service options at the resort. This is because the parks in Paris close very early (around 6 or 7PM) out of peak season, and not everybody wants to sit down to eat at 5:30PM, especially in Europe! We prefer to eat later, so we booked a table at The Steakhouse for 8PM on a Monday evening. Atmosphere From the outside, the restaurant looks a little…

Anyhow, as I strolled along, I decided to pop into the Jolly Holiday Bakery. Suzannah Mitchell
    11 Sep 2014 | 5:06 pm
During a visit to Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground a few months back, I was filled with an epic case of nostalgia regarding what our beloved Walt Disney World was like when it opened back in 1971. I instantly wanted to write an article reflecting on my thoughts and how things were way back then. Granted, I wasn’t born then, but a handful of years later, I’d be celebrating my first visit to the Vacation Kingdom of the World. After a more recent visit to celebrate Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue’s 40th anniversary, I was reminded that I really needed…

I know, I know, it’s still summer – it’s still hot – (over 100 here at Walt Disney World!) but I find myself drifting to thoughts of cool autumn breezes, falling leaves, and pumpkins…Okay, maybe some of those things don’t exactly happen here in Florida, but a girl can dream. Believe it or not, “Orlando Halloween” is right around the corner (that’s what we locals call it when Halloween descends upon the area in early August while we’re all sweating in the sun) and that means lots of fun options to get in the Fall spirit. On a recent “Girlfriend Getaway” to the Walt Disney World Resort, my friend Zannaland and I decided to splurge on a three hour dinner at the Bull & Bear Steakhouse inside the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. My first visit to this restaurant was back in July of 2011. You can read my very first Bull and Bear Restaurant Review here. That first visit won me over and I have been back to dine at the steakhouse several times since then. It’s a special treat. I love shopping at Disney. I mean, I really love shopping at Disney. As we approach this iconic show’s 45th anniversary, NDM Letty recalls her fond memories of watching. Be sure to check out the video at the end of the article – very vintage 1975 footage of the Magic Kingdom in WDW & monorail resorts – The Polynesian Village, the Contemporary & Fort Wilderness. Disney Books are a great way to keep Disney at home. Disney Book Group was kind enough to send these books for NDK approval – be sure to look for the NDK Review after the description of each book! 12 Sep 2014 | 8:00 am
Do you remember the dancing butterflies in the Disney film, Fantasia 2000? Just after the opening scene, butterflies in abstract, triangular shapes dance, swirl, and flutter in synchronization to the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.   Whenever I visit the Butterfly House at the Epcot® Flower & Garden Festival Presented by HGTV, it reminds me of the Fantasia butterflies.  I watch them float and flutter and can hear the four-note Allegro con brio. Once known as Minnie’s Butterfly House, over the years the aviary has grown in size and has a new…

Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life   The day: September 1. After a day of class, I catch the bus from campus. Can’t wait for the party to begin!” “Anyone have an extra copy of the COM 1200 syllabus?” Ok, so maybe that last one was off-tangent from the others, but a large portion of my…

By Claire Nat Copyright – Disney Howdy! If you’ve been to a Wild West town before – whether it was an old authentic ghost town or right out of a theme park (like, say, Walt Disney World?) – you probably know the keys to a good western locale. First, there should be lots of wooden buildings. Second, there should be a saloon, or two, or four. Third, there should be some rollickin’ good music to put you in a square-dancin’ mood. The Frontierland area of Magic Kindgom park has all three of these keys. The music in the area really transports you back in time to…

One of the most coveted dining experiences at Walt Disney World is Cinderella’s Royal Table (CRT). Even with its high price tag ($58.15 for adults, $35.86 for kids, or two table service credits on the Disney Dining Plan) this restaurant can be a challenge to get into, especially for breakfast. Is CRT worth the hype? I believe it is, but to get the best possible experience it is going to take more than just money. It is going to take a…

“This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Weave Made Media® and Rubbermaid, but all my opinions are my own. #weavemade #FallFixUp http://my-disclosur.es/RgFrEH I know that most people love the summers here in the Northwest, but there is something special about autumn. The weather is perfect for coffee, but you don’t have to bundle up too much outdoors. The leaves begin to show their colors. And it always feels great to take a walk in the crisp air. Autumn also means that I won’t have to mow my lawn as often, which is nice. But until all of those…
  • The Family Road Trip Just Got Better with OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi

The license plate game. I-Spy. Countless rounds of 100 bottles of root beer on the wall. This is what I remember of the road trips from my childhood. Sure, the scenery was nice. But as a kid, the charm wore off quickly and even the best road trip games did little to stave off the boredom. These days, we are lucky enough to have tablets and smartphones so we can play games or watch movies wherever we go. Chevrolet is even bringing built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi to their cars, trucks and crossover vehicles. Now your passengers can watch Netflix on the go, which makes me really wish something like this…
  • The Swiffer Effect: A Clean Home is a Happy Home

    30 Aug 2014 | 10:30 pm
There are few things that I like more than a clean house. I just can’t sit still when I see clutter, a dirty floor, or dishes in the sink. While it may seem odd to some, I enjoy cleaning the house and bringing order back after the dogs and my son have done their worst. With our big move to Seattle, I had two homes to clean. Our house in Oregon had to be cleaned out for the next owners. The new place in Seattle was kind of clean, but you could tell it still needed a deep clean. There were still food odors from the former owners and their kids left behind handprints and carpet stains. It was…

It felt odd when I realized everything I owned could fit inside a giant moving truck. It felt even more bizarre to see the truck drive away. After months of planning, we loaded the dogs into the car, locked the front door one last time, and set the GPS on our T-Mobile 4G tablet to our new address in Seattle. Moving to a new state was bittersweet. There is excitement about the new job and our new home. There is also a lot we will miss from our little farming town in Oregon. The job opportunities were limited in Oregon, but it was pretty neat to have farmers as neighbors. We always had fresh…

We have a lot of firsts coming up. My son is entering first grade. This will be his first time in public school. And this will be the first time he won’t be in the same school where my wife teaches. Our family will be experiencing a lot of new things as we move from Oregon to Washington and change always comes with its share of uncertainty. The after school pick up seems to be the biggest source of worry. While I can rationally remind myself of the countless times I made it from the classroom to the school bus as a child, it doesn’t do much to lessen my overprotective tendencies as a…
