When was the last time you looked at a billboard — I mean really looked? Ever spot a facet of one that you missed at first glance? Something that made it pop? When it comes to Disney theme park billboards, bet you didn’t realize all that’s entailed into making them so exceptional, filled with sly references and artfully hidden gems. Well, those creative whizzes at Disney’s Yellow Shoes Creative Group know how to ensure they don’t just look amazing and enticing, but also tell a story. But why go the extra mile? “We hope to remind guests of how much fun they had on the attractions…

The Disney chefs love to tinker in the kitchen, and especially enjoy creating new tastes for guests with allergies. One of our favorite new tastes is the gluten-free naan bread at Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge—you won’t find it on the menu, but when guests with gluten allergies ask to speak to the chef, it’s one of the options for Indian-style bread service (for those fabulous chutneys and sauces), open-faced naan sandwiches at lunch and the kid’s meal cheese pizza. “Chef Jonathan Dove has a great passion for creating items to accommodate special diet needs, as his wife…

This past weekend, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort hosted the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s annual “Tour de Turtles” event which allows sea turtle fans to follow the marathon migration of 12 sea turtles from their nesting beaches to their foraging grounds. This year, Olaf’s summer dream in the Academy Award winning Disney Animation Studios film “Frozen” inspired us to feature him in our event and name the turtles after his friends Anna and Elsa. • SDCC’14 Coverage: Marvel Releases Limited Edition Avengers Age of Ultron Posters That Harbor a Secret

    John Frost
    30 Jul 2014 | 1:55 am
Starting opening day of San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel began releasing limited edition Avengers: Age of Ultron character posters. The first ones featured what looked like battle scenes centering on Iron Man and new character Scarlet Witch. Then SDCC attendees got to see posters for Hawkeye, Captain America and Black Widow, along with another new character, Quicksilver. All were featured in similar battle vignettes, and it became apparent that these posters were part of a bigger glimpse at the movie. Upon the release of the final two posters, of Thor and The Hulk, the suspicions became reality…

Many viewers were shocked when the TV series Once Upon a Time revealed the story would be taking a Frozen turn in Season Four. If you were wondering just how they decided to incorporate Disney’s biggest animated fairytale into the show, the reasoning was revealed in a humorous video that aired during SDCC’14. Fortunately, it seems the whole decision making process was recorded by cameras in the Once Upon writer’s room. Watching the video, it appears this season’s “big bad” could’ve been much worse…Frank Matterhorn worse. Nice to see they’re working…

Electric Park Picture courtesy of VintageKansasCity.com Kansas City sported an amusement park, eloquently dubbed “Electric Park,” named for its 100,000 electric light bulbs that transformed the park into a fantasyland of sparkling lights at sundown.  Electric Park was unique for its time when it debuted in 1899, as electricity was a fairly new commodity and the electric light bulb illuminated only about one-third of American homes.  But, Electric Park was important in another, albeit unexpected, way when it lay the seed of an illuminated amusement park into the head of a young…

  • Disney World brings return time cards to Epcot's Soarin'

    30 Jul 2014 | 1:33 pm
By Robert Niles: Walt Disney World today expanded its "Anna and Elsa"-style timed return ticket system to Epcot's Soarin'. With standby waits often over two hours, Soarin' is one of Disney's most popular attractions, which is why the resort soon will be building a third theater for the show. But in the meantime, Disney's trying the system it employed last week for the Anna and Elsa meet-and-greet at the Magic Kingdom's Princess Fairytale Hall.Inside Soarin'. Photo courtesy DisneyPeople who have made Fastpass+ reservations for Soarin' will continue to use that return queue as before. However,…
  • Game Review: Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 Mobile

    29 Jul 2014 | 1:35 pm
By Jacob Sundstrom: Like most roller coaster dorks with computers in the 2000s, Roller Coaster Tycoon provided an outlet for my wildest theme park fantasies. All three games and their many expansion packs delivered countless hours of enjoyment while deepening my affinity for roller coasters, theme parks and questionable business decisions to further develop the first two. So when I saw there was a mobile version available for 99 cents on the Apple App Store I was...skeptical. Dubbed Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 Mobile (get it?), the game claims to offer lots of appealing features, including an…

By Robert Niles: One of the many announcements at this weekend's Comic-Con in San Diego confirmed Universal's release of a new King Kong movie for 2016, Skull Island. Promotion image courtesy Legendary EntertainmentHow much more interesting that announcement becomes when one remembers that Universal Orlando is now building a (not yet announced) King Kong attraction at Islands of Adventure?Could we have a rare case of movie/theme park synergy happening here, with King Kong returning to theaters and to Universal Orlando both in 2016? While we typically think of movie-themed attractions lagging…

  • Kool Aid at Club 33, Pt. 2

    Dave DeCaro
    30 Jul 2014 | 5:00 am
Yesterday's post covered how the Club 33 remodel impacted the regular pass-buying guest. The guest who spends: $150 per Park Hopper ticket + $17 for parking + approximately $50 for food/snacks (and that's extremely conservative) + $50 souvenirs = $267. If you are spending the night, you'll spend a minimum of at least $130 (again…very conservative) for a room. GRAND TOTAL FOR ONE PERSON: $397. That's at least a $400 day. For one person. Wow.Want an Annual Pass? One that doesn't have blackout dates and also includes parking? You'll be shelling out $700. For the next level up in service and…

First, many thanks to Andy Castro for generously allowing me to use his photos in today's post.Up until the last few years, Club 33 has sailed through Disneyland history as a hidden part of the New Orleans Square landscape. It was that elusive place that some were aware of but weren't quite sure exactly where or what it was. Many have been fortunate enough to visit, thanks to the generosity of a friend of a friend, but only a select few who patiently suffered through the years-long wait list were actually members. They enjoyed the camaraderie of other long-time members and the ability to…

Last Sunday I had a photo shoot at Crystal Pier. It was a bit overcast and cloudy, which wouldn't seem like an ideal situation to take photos, but in truth, it worked out just fine.Since it was early, Pacific Beach was pretty quiet with most of the people I saw either surfing or getting coffee and breakfast at Kono's, the local hot spot.My subject was bodybuilder David Anthony Tassin, who just the night before had earned the NPC National Physique Athlete Runner-up in the Los Angeles Championships Physique Tall Class. Here he is prepping for his photos. He looked pretty ripped even before the…

  • The Castle Of Sleeping Beauty

    30 Jul 2014 | 6:49 am
More 1956 Kodachrome slides from Disneyland. Today the photographer focused on Sleeping Beauty Castle. The first image is from the hub and reminds me of the cover of the 1956 and 1957 Disneyland guidebooks. Quite a lot of activity and color in this image. The next image is from the Carnation Gardens side of the Castle. Note the fire hydrant and the white picket fence as every princess wants a white picket fence, 2 kids and a dog.

    28 Jul 2014 | 7:02 am
I love finding great Kodachrome color slides as the color just pops. This week I will be showing a grouping of Kodachromes from a trip circa 1956. Instead of saving the best for last, I decided to brighten Monday with some nice views of Tomorrowland. The first image is of the Monsanto Hall of Chemistry with the fountains and the great 1950s atomic symbol on the building. Check out the young boy who is proudly wearing his souvenir hat. The wonderful iconic TWA Rocket to the Moon in all it's glory. Check out the plethora of signs in the back and the crowd enjoying the shade.

The postcards have a small insert which when squeezed squeak. First up are Chip and Dale frolicing in the forests of Frontierland. Next up is Figaro in Gepetto's house.

First up is a view from the start of the ride looking out towards the end of the pier with the Jungle huts of the Banana Train Ride in the background. The next image is a view from inside the ride with the pier and Santa Monica in the background. Based upon reader's comments, here are both images reversed.

    30 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
I really need to get back to scanning some more vintage Knott's slides. But I still have a few scans ready to go! Like this one, showing a few hungry guests heading into the Gold Rush Grill. I guess the chicken restaurant can't feed everybody. The recipe for the Gold Rush Grill's "Pioneer beef stew" was brought all the way from Donner Pass. It has tender chunks of real pioneer in every bite!Well, it wouldn't be a Knott's Berry Farm post without a photo of the sunken area where you could pan for gold. I don't ever remember noticing the dead tree adorned with what appears to be old coffee…

Here are a few from True-life Adventureland! It was March 13, 1958. Even though I have posted some slides from this lot before, I have somehow NOT included some fun info gleaned from Jason's Disneyland Almanac. March 13 was a Thursday, and park hours were 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM. The high temperature was 68 degrees. And get this: attendance was 3400 people!! WOW.I love this little monkey temple (though the scruffy monkeys have vacated the premises). Inside the temple is something that resembles a golden Buddha. Looters would have stolen him, but he is protected by hungry crocodiles, poisonous…
  • Pirate Ship, 1956

    28 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
Yo ho ho and a bottle o' rum! And if it is not too presumptuous of me, Arrrr! The old Chicken of the Sea pirate ship was a beautiful and functional piece of make-believe in the pre-1983 Fantasyland.  Here are three swell pictures of it from 1956.In those early days, the words "Chicken of the Sea" had not yet been added to that red band on the bow. Not that it needed it, but something tells me that the powerful tuna consortium insisted that it be added - probably because of the zillions of photos being taken. Gotta make the most of that free advertising (even though they were paying…
  • Canoe Races! August 1969

    27 Jul 2014 | 12:01 am
If you're like me, there is nothing more exciting than a canoe race. The sound of engines revving, the smell of petrol and burning rubber, the thrill-a-minute danger… none of those things are to be found at a canoe race!Actually I'm not sure if these two canoes are technically racing, or if they are just scrambling to avoid being plowed under by the Mark Twain that is bearing down on them. Still, it's a pretty picture, with the glassy river reflecting the light of the sunset sky, while New Orleans Square gleams on shore. If you look toward the left, the crowd is noticeably bigger - they all…

Except for three of them that I just made up.Let's take a time machine back to 1963 and see what's cooking on Fremont Street! Hint: it involves neon and blinky lights. Somehow I have accumulated quite a few night shots of the Fremont Street casinos. Check out Binion's  Horseshoe Hotel and Casino! Our photographer carefully waited until all of the sequential lights were fully lit, which is mighty neighborly of him. Unlike other casinos that lured guests with singers…

    29 Jul 2014 | 3:17 am
“Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” WALT DISNEY Disneyland Paris was never on my agenda let alone the itinerary. Having owned a villa in the sunshine state for a while we have done all things Disney in Florida to death but the teenager had other ideas. In a well put together argument she pointed out that although she too had been many times to Disney and other related theme parks in Florida she was either a) too young and b) too short to ride any of the big roller coasters so she ‘needed’ to…

We’re back with another installment in The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney series! Snacks are a big deal around here. Heck, we plan entire events and crawls around them! Happy summer! We are now back home and enjoying the remainder of the summer break at home, reminiscing about our Great Family Road Trip of 2014. Here is the first part of our adventures, our day at the Georgia Aquarium. I had always wanted to visit this aquarium, having heard about the amazing whale sharks for years now. After our visit, I definitely wish I was closer to Atlanta to enjoy this amazing aquarium more often. If you haven’t been, it’s a must-visit. We began our trek in the wee hours of the morning (3am) in order to let the kids sleep and enjoy the whole day in Atlanta.

The Four Seasons Orlando Resort is quickly becoming my favorite place to visit in the Walt Disney World area. The resort itself and the grounds are just so relaxing and inviting. And inviting is exactly what the Four Seasons Orlando is going for, for both locals and non-guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort. When I first toured the property back in May, discussions were still underway regarding non-guests visiting the property or dining in the 5 restaurants the Four Seasons will eventually have open. At our recent visit we were pleased to hear that the Four Seasons welcomes non-guests…

    30 Jul 2014 | 11:58 am
Given that the tree-like lead in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy stays true to character and speaks only three words in a specific sequence — i.e., ‘I am Groot,’ — it would probably be fascinating enough to watch and listen to actor Vin Diesel record the lines with various inflections. That just wasn’t enough for Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios, however, who have shared with us this video of Diesel recording the line, not in English, but in Brazilian Portugese, Latin American Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and French.       Well ladies and gents you are looking at “Hans” for the upcoming season of “Once Upon a Time”. His name is Tyler Jacob Moore. I must say the casting so far has been a pretty good match to the characters. Hans is described as, “a well-bred prince with a serious chip on his shoulder,” a young man who burns to be king. Refined and well-spoken on the outside, Hans has a mean streak a mile wide and will do anything to claim the power and respect he thinks he deserves. What do you think? Whether it’s at work, in our car, or even at the grocery store, sometimes reminders of our favorite place find their way into our day. Everything experienced on Walt Disney World property has ties to Disney in some way, obviously, but some attractions,…

On our first day in Epcot, we chose Sunshine Seasons, one of the jewels of counter service dining in the parks, according to all the checks we’d made. We began enjoying our Asian-infused lunch until our only adventurous eater started to look a little queasy. The sights and aromas had overcome our (somewhat)…

My absolute favorite part of the Walt Disney Family Museum is their ginormous “Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination” model in the last room. I think it might be Patrick’s too, because he took more than a hundred photos of it on our visit last month. If I stick all of these in the already-picture-packed next installment of my Walt Disney Family Museum Weekend Getaway trip report, it might break your eyeballs. So here is a separate post devoted entirely to Patrick’s photo tour of that 12-foot model. Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination was designed to capture his…

We wanted a whole day to spend at WDFM, so on our first travel day we decided to check out a different museum, Filoli. This was the main estate of the family that owned the gold mine across the street from my childhood home in Grass Valley. It was one of those places I’d always heard about but never seen, and now…

    20 Mar 2014 | 10:00 am
When the Muppets got rebooted (again… sorta) in 2012, I wrote a post urging you to go see the movie twice because I’d spent my own first viewing peeking through my fingers in terror that Disney was about to ruin a beloved franchise. It took a second, more relaxed viewing to just let go and enjoy the ride. I also urged you to support the movie so that Disney would make another instead of returning to the wretched-TV-movie formula of the previous decade. And apparently my post worked, cuz they made a sequel! And it’s coming out tomorrow! And you should all go see it!!! Maybe…

    19 Jul 2014 | 10:43 am
We’re back from the grand reopening of Club 33 in Disneyland New Orleans Square. Over the last six months, the club has undergone a huge renovation completely changing the style and theme. When we first broke the story of the renovation a year ago, the scope and effect of the project was completely unknown. This project has completely changed the look and feel of New Orleans Square, with the closing of the Court of Angels and the recent addition of huge windows into the area. Regardless of your opinion of the newly redesigned area, you must accept that there has been a big change.

What is the biggest adventure you have ever taken with your children? A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…

If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…

There isn’t a whole lot to do in our little farm town, which is both good and bad depending on your perspective. On one hand, it is nice to live away fro the city where it is much quieter and where traffic is never an issue. On the other hand, making plans for weekend activities usually involves a long drive. One of the neat things our town does have is an aquatic center which offers swim classes and recreational activities for the city’s residents. My son took swim lessons for a couple years and, as a parent, it was fun to watch him grow in his swimming abilities. I still…
  • A Truck in a Can? Toy State’s Hot Wheels Energy R/C is Portable Fun

    14 Jul 2014 | 11:19 pm
I have been trying to limit the amount of screen time for my son, but I had to accept my shortcoming as a parent whenever his tablet is around. It is just plain convenient to let him watch a movie or play games on the tablet while in the car. And lately, we have had to run a lot of errands on weekends to prepare for our move. Without something to play with, my son would be really bored waiting while we do boring things. We decided to buy a new mattress before leaving Oregon so that we could still benefit from the state’s zero sales tax. Instead of using a tablet as a babysitter, I gave…

I never thought Seinfeld would make me feel old. There I was at lunch, making a reference to the infamous George Costanza wallet, and all I got in response were blank stares from the interns. I suppose many of them were still in Kindergarten when the show went off the air. I was trying to sell the interns on the value of carrying around less stuff. Several of the interns had a laptop, tablet and phone with them. I was in the same boat. My own computer bag had become a Costanza wallet of sorts, with two laptops, a tablet, and two cell phones. My aching shoulder was the main reason why I…
