This famous story of a chicken who believes the sky is falling because of being hit on the head by an acorn is re-told by Disney’s 46th animated feature film entitled “Chicken Little” What makes this feature unique is that it is the first CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) film that Disney produced without Pixar. It was produced in-house at Walt Disney’s Feature Animation’s Headquarters in Burbank California, and was also Disney’s first animated film to be released as a DVD-only. However, the original story, or fable is vastly different than the Disney story. Many people…

Perhaps no company or business today has more merchandising linked to its products than the Disney Company. From the earliest days in the studio’s history the marketing of Disney merchandise brought in much needed revenue for the company. But in the beginning, Walt never realized the huge revenue potential possibilities of licensing his product. The first Disney created character to be used in this way was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but this was mainly for publicity. It was in late 1929 while he was in New York negotiating with Pat Powers, when a man approached him in the lobby of the…

Of all the characters, Artisans, and friends that Walt Disney had amassed over his long, successful career, none was more important than his own brother, Roy O. Disney. The bond these two men developed over their lifetimes helped shaped the Disney Empire and even their own personal lives. Roy Oliver Disney was the third son born to Elias and Flora Disney on June 6th, 1893. There were two older siblings, Herbert Disney, born December 8, 1888 and Raymond, December 30th, 1890. Even though Roy’s oldest brother was just 5 years his senior, he was never as close to his brothers as when…

Walt Disney is famous for his quotes, and perhaps the most poignant one was… “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality” And in Walt’s long and storied career, this certainly rings true. From Walt’s humblest beginnings to the zenith of his triumphs, he always had the most talented and devoted people on his staff to make his dreams come true. From Ub Iwerks and Carl Stalling in the beginning, there are countless people over the years who contributed to making his ideas and dreams come to…

This is truly a stretch, I fear, but our morning routine was really thrown out the window this morning! Usually it’s repeated morning after morning: I wake up at about 6:30 or 6:45, “soak” for a while, and at 7:15 Mom or Dad turns on “Good Morning America.” Medicine at 7:45. It’s like “Groundhog’s Day.” Now to this morning. I was woken at 3:30! Why the heck? you ask. This morning Mom and I did a 5K at “The Happiest Place on Earth.” Translation: Disneyland. Dad was an extremely good sport and was our driver I hadn’t been to Disneyland in five years! I forgot how much…

  • Disneyland Raises Bar for Upcharge Experiences with $300 Jungle Cruise Breakfast

    4 Sep 2015 | 12:25 pm
By Robert Niles: Disneyland just announced a new upcharge experience where you can eat breakfast on the African Veldt inside the Jungle Cruise — for $300 a person. The "Sunrise Safari Breakfast" includes "fresh pastries, exotic fruit & chia parfaits, glazed pork belly bacon, pan-seared sausage and roasted gold potato & onion hash." But, as with most of Disney's upcharge events, the experience includes more than just the food. After the meal, diners will get to take a turn on the mic as they skipper one of the Jungle Cruise boats before the park opens to the public. Diners also get a…

I have read so many rave reviews about the ice cream concoctions that I was in danger of shorting out the keyboard from drool. As soon as I booked our hotel, I booked a dinner at Beaches and Cream. I had heard that this restaurant had limited seating. I just didn’t quite grasp how limited we were talking. I booked this reservation for our first night at the Beach Club. Upon entering within the place, I was immediately struck with the lack of space.

Tomorrowland at Disneyland has been an embarrassment for years with the Disney Corporation. Walt's incredible 1967 version was a landmark in futuristic thinking and problem-solving for the next generation. Today, it is a mishmash of attractions that are neither innovative or thought provoking. So, for today, we will look back to a time when guests could marvel about that "Final Frontier" and all of the exciting possibilities that it might hold. The first image shows two excited young gents in their best western wear meeting the Spaceman of Tomorrowland. What a thrill! This tall drink of water…

Welcome to the Disneyland Hotel, circa 1964. The signage says "Hotel Disneyland," only because it was an afterthought and the letters fit better that way. This was back in the day when guests could be trusted enough to use a balcony without being a danger to themselves.A closeup of the pool area, which considering the recent high temperatures here in San Diego looks real good. Now that you've checked in, let's take the tram over to the park. What? Signage advertising a competitor for tourist dollars? Say it isn't so. This MUST be a vintage image. For all you signage geeks out there, a closeup of…

I have become pretty jaded about many vintage Disneyland shots. It has to be a really cool one to get my attention any more. This November 1964 image reached out and grabbed me by the throat. This is definitely the best closeup Skull Rock Cove shot I have in my collection. I don't believe it was shot from the Skyway, but rather from the Pirate Ship itself. This little area behind the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant in Fantasyland was like an undiscovered treasure. Tucked away between the Ship and Casey Junior, it not only provided eats it also provided a well-themed getaway. Here's a…

    28 Aug 2015 | 4:00 am
Yesterday, we saw Shirley Temple fighting City Hall; today, we see Walt Disney's version of City Hall at Disneyland. This is one of my earliest color shots of City Hall from Summer of 1955. How about a scenic ride on a horse-drawn carriage?Or perhaps you'd just like to rest your weary feet up on the City Hall front porch. These days, with the crowds of guests it would be difficult to do this. This vintage shot of City Hall has a ghostly cast to it; possibly a poor attempt of somebody to take a photo of an existing shot. Still, the image itself is pretty cool.A young boy is leisurely selling…

Picture this…Spring 1964. It had been a few years since Shirley Temple was last seen in a TV series. ABC and Twentieth Century-Fox approached her about giving Hollywood another shot, developing a number of different ideas for her. By January 1965 Shirley was before the cameras again filming the pilot for "Go Fight City Hall!," a half-hour situation comedy in which she would play a single social worker at a San Francisco welfare agency. • Souvenir Friday- Market House Ashtray

    4 Sep 2015 | 6:03 am
A very early Disneyland souvenir is this glass ashtray with a graphic for the Disneyland Market House on the bottom. The ashtray is made out of clear glass and the design is just a paper label with green felt behind the label. Since Disneyland was not a guaranteed success, many of the early souvenirs were generic with just Disneyland on the item. The graphic is one I would expect to appear in Knott's Berry Farm souvenirs.
  • Davy Crockett Arcade Frontierland

    3 Sep 2015 | 6:34 am
The largest store in Frontierland in the 1950s was the Davy Crockett Arcade. Now the Pioneer Mercantile, the store carried all the Davy Crockett merchandise of the time period, along with other Western themed merchandise. There was also the BoneKraft store that made decorative items carved from bone. I like the themed lights for the sign and also Gaston's decorative antler touch. I know the image is dirty, but that is Disneyland sign shop dirt so I left it.
  • Adventureland Direction Sign

    2 Sep 2015 | 6:13 am
The backside of the Frontierland Direction sign I posted yesterday is the sign directing guests to Adventureland and the Jungle Rivers of the World. The image features a nice look at the transition of building designs and theming of both Frontierland and Adventureland. Gaston was also here as noted by the use of antlers for decoration. A nice touch is the restrooms sign. Note the image has some yellow paint on it, which is vintage Disneyland sign paint so I did not remove it.
  • Frontierland Direction Sign

At the juncture of Adventureland and Frontierland a plethora of signs direct guests to the attractions of each land. The photograph showcases the great layering and depth of Disneyland theming, with tiki totems and rattan designs in the background. I am going to assume that Amazon Belle is now wanting to see a series on the phone booths at Disneyland.

The 1964 New York World's Fair's "Transportation Zone" had three extra-special exhibits - everybody who is cool remembers the amazing "Futurama" at the General Motors pavilion, and Ford's "Magic Skyway" (created by Walt Disney and his Imagineers). But Chrysler had a pavilion too, and it was pretty great! I feel like I could have spent half a day (or more) just at those three pavilions. If you are building a time machine in your garage, please make a note of that.So what's with the photo of the car? Why, it's is a fabulous TURBINE CAR from Chrysler! • Instamatics!

    4 Sep 2015 | 12:01 am
Delving once more into the ever-shrinking folder of vintage Kodak Instamatics, I chose two fun views that I think you'll enjoy. First up is this wonderful shot (taken from a just-launched Skyway bucket) looking westward along the Peoplemover track. The sign in the foreground is awesome as are the Peoplemover trains in their original colors. To our left is "Adventure Thru Inner Space", while "America the Beautiful" is to our right (along with a bit of one of Mary Blair's tile murals). In the distance we can see the Columbia's sails, and the cupola of the Pirates of the Caribbean building.

The Kaiser Hall of Aluminum Fame, the Dutch Boy Paint Gallery, the Crane Bathroom of Tomorrow, the American Dairy Association Dairy Bar - ay caramba!Richfield sponsored the Autopias, but they also sponsored a show called "The World Beneath Us", which let all the hep kitty cats know about where their oil and gasoline came…
  • The Disneyland Band and the Oregon Ducks

    1 Sep 2015 | 12:01 am
Sometime just before 1956 turned into 1957, one of the teams that was to participate in the Rose Bowl football game showed up at Disneyland. Because why the hell not? But first, let's have the Disneyland Band (no Vesey Walker, sorry ladies) play a fanfare to welcome them (note the odd Christmas decorations on City Hall in the background). I am guessing that the band is playing a tune called "Mighty Oregon", because...... the team in question was The University of Oregon Ducks. They look so nice and normal! And yet, you know that these boys got into some shenanigans on a daily basis. I've seen…

  • Au revoir, Paris. Bonjour, Bordeaux.

    2 Sep 2015 | 11:00 pm
After spending three nights at the ever-so-lovely Disneyland Hotel, it was time to say goodbye. Easier said than done. “Nothing in France is easy.” That became our sort of proverbial motto during our stay. It was always little things: not being able to get the rental bikes out of their little stalls cause the instructions were in French, being unable to comprehend the train schedule, always failing at flagging down our waiters for the check, etc. And on this day, it was returning the rental car. I think we made about 3 aimless loops through the Disneyland Paris property,…

    1 Sep 2015 | 12:25 am
On day 3 of our stay at the Disneyland Hotel, we said “a bientot” to Disneyland Paris and hello to… actual Paris. We went back and forth between wanting to ride the train there or just rent a car, and eventually the latter won out. Mostly cause you-know-who really wanted to drive a proper European stick shift. Heh. Men and their cars. *Shakes head* *Can only understand strange obsessions when they’re Disney-related* I’m glad we ended up going that route, cause navigating the cobblestone streets was pretty entertaining. Not to mention total eyecandy. The tiny…

Day 2 at Disneyland Paris started with some good ‘ole fashioned touristy photo opps. I promise I’m happier than I look. See! All the smiles. First order of business was coffee. We got a couple cappuccinos and sat awhile to properly caffeinate. Then we did some mindless wandering, taking in the park at a MUCH slower pace than the day before. It was nice. Can you spot the sad, lost balloon? Prettier than pretty. Especially with the Toy Story cloud effects. At 1pm we had reservations at THE BEST DISNEY BUFFET EVER: Inventions. It’s located inside the Disneyland Hotel, right…

  • Pay Dirt: Michael Barrier's Interviews: Wilfred Jackson

    10 Aug 2015 | 5:33 pm
From Barrier's blog, photographs of Jaxon posing for Bill Tytla's benefit on his "Night On Bald Mountian" animation. "Yeah, without a shirt" he says in the interview. "And don't think some of the fellows around the studio didn't have a lot of fun with those photostats."There are a few writers on animation without whose work there'd be little or no bedrock of history to learn from. These are the people who did first-person interviews with veterans now long dead, who made tremendous efforts to screen and analyze films not readily available anywhere, and who produced books that…
  • New Book Review: The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis & the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic

    11 Sep 2014 | 5:12 pm
It takes a long time to look through John Canemaker's new book  The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis and the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic, and it should. Nearly 300 pages are filled with examples of every aspect of Disney's production: drawings, model sheets, camera setups, and hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of how shots were achieved, animators at work, models posing for animators, reference photos of animals and humans, cels, drawings, the Burbank studio being built, "The Reluctant Dragon" live action production, Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio. Numerous examples of…
  • John Canemaker in Los Angeles: Thursday 9/11 at the Central Library, LACMA on Saturday, September 13: Gertie, Fantasia and...SCHULTHEIS!

    7 Sep 2014 | 10:57 pm
It's always an event when John Canemaker comes to Los Angeles-literally. In 2012 he was here to present and moderate a program honoring the work of John and Faith Hubley, a fascinating and wonderful evening.  Now in September we have an embarrassment of riches. This coming Thursday it's a double dose of Canemaker and author and author/librarian Christina Rice, both authors of new books on the enigmatic Herman Schultheis. They'll be reading and signing in downtown's Central Library from 6 to 8pm, and the event is free. Then on Saturday, a triple threat: on Saturday, Sept. 13th,…

This Saturday, March 15, I'm moderating a panel at the Walt Disney Family Museum where I'll be talking with Claire Keane, Lorelay Bove, and Brenda Chapman about their experiences in the animation business, and their lives as animation artists.Last October the museum also asked if I would write an essay for their quarterly on the subject of women in animation, past and present, which follows here.In the 1970s there was one must-have for every aspiring young animator's bookshelf: Christopher Finch's oversized, heavy and beautiful The Art of Walt Disney.  Illustrated books detailing the…

    12 Mar 2014 | 2:12 pm
Is there anyone in animation who isn't excited by the work of Mary Blair?  Oh, probably a few misanthropes or those who go the contrarian route, but Blair's gargantuan reputation grows year after year for good reason. Many have spoken and written about her influence more eloquently than I ever could, but nothing beats seeing the real thing, up close and personal. To this end the Walt Disney Family Museum is opening the largest show to date of Blair's accomplishments both inside and outside animation.  Curated by Oscar-winning animator, writer (and Blair biographer) and NYU professor…

As a Disney fan (OK… borderline maniac Disney freak) and a D23 member, I consider the D23 Expo a must-attend event.  In addition to the informative exhibits, amazing shopping, creative costumes, and fabulous people watching, I always look forward to the D23 Archives exhibit. Seeing original pieces of Disneyland history up close and personal is such a treat.  This year’s archives exhibit was so wonderfully done.  I spent most of my visit drooling over the display of photos, menus and other original paraphernalia from the restaurants and snack spots of Disneyland’s first…

While I may be totally messing with Disney’s intended demographic for their newest merchandise line, Twenty Eight & Main – designed for the “Discerning Gentleman…” I can’t help but be excited for the great graphics and designs used and the promise of more to come. 12 Aug 2015 | 8:07 am
Like many other posts which I begin here lately, this one has been brewing a while, probably since the EPCOT 30 celebration put on by D23 back in *gulp* 2012…wow, has it really been that long? Well anyway, I wanted to say a lot about D23 back then, and since that time, my sentiments have only grown. I feel that I should preface this by saying that, yes, I am a charter D23 member. Growing up in the 1980’s and falling in love with the Walt Disney World of that time, and then EPCOT Center, I was lucky enough to have parents who were equally as interested and full of love for the…
  • The Disneyland Difference

    17 Jul 2015 | 12:35 pm
I’ve wanted to write a post with this title since my first visit to Disneyland in 2011. I will probably still write about the different types of Disneyland differences in future posts, but today, it’s all about the intangible. The date of my first visit is actually embarrassing to admit – a lifelong Disney fan such as myself only visiting the original park that started it all, just 4 short years ago. And yet, I feel such love and devotion to this place, it’s almost as if I’ve now edited it into my childhood memories and have meshed its history with my own.

    2 Jul 2015 | 11:18 am
The Disney park currently known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been the much maligned “not-a-full-day-park” for years and years now. It usually comes in 3rd or 4th place, depending on whether the person choosing enjoys Disney’s Animal Kingdom or not. I have personally defended Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the past, based on the memories and the hope it once held, and the potential future I thought it could enjoy. However, as of late, much like the former EPCOT Center, DHS has been slowly cannibalizing itself in the name of “progress” and throwing…

The official synopsis of the Good Dinosaur from DisneyPixar is this: “The Good Dinosaur” asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? It can be difficult to get your kids to eat their veggies, but maybe fashioning them into something fun can do the trick. I came up with this easy peasy snack tray from Disney and Pixar’s newest animated feature film “The Good Dinosaur” (Opening November 25th) and everything about it is good for your little one. Who remembers the “Tangled” Rapunzel Tower at the 2011 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival?  We happened to be at the Walt Disney World Resort on the morning after they installed the tower.  In true Walt Disney World style, one day the tower wasn’t there and the next day, there it was, artfully nestled into the landscape as if it had been there forever.  Located in World Showcase between the Germany and Italy pavilions, the tower had windows that opened and closed, from which flowed Rapunzel’s hair.  And when the windows opened, you could watch Rapunzel’s…

Perhaps no company or business today has more merchandising linked to its products than the Disney Company. But in the beginning, Walt never realized the huge revenue potential possibilities of licensing his product. 2 Sep 2015 | 6:00 am
A while back, we polled the WDW Radio Blog readers and asked you to vote on an activity that Lou could try at one of the Walt Disney World theme parks or resorts. Surfing was the clear choice. Always a man of his word, Lou took on the challenge! On a very early July morning, Lou arrived for his surf lesson. The time was 5:30 am. Darkness still blanketed the parking lot as the surf students gathered by the main entrance of Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon. Everyone was checked in and then escorted down to the wave pool. Being at Typhoon Lagoon before it opens is a treat! What an amazing…

    Dan
    29 Aug 2015 | 11:11 pm
When I travel for work, I try to only bring the bare minimum. Even the lightest laptop will feel like a bag of bricks after carrying it around a convention floor all day. I scrutinize everything that goes into my travel bag and try to find items that are compact and can serve multiple purposes. The Lenovo ThinkPad Stack is a new accessory that is worth taking on your next trip. The compact design makes efficient use of space. The modular components let you take only what you need so that you can keep your travel bag light. So what is the ThinkPad Stack? When I took the components out of the…
  • Create a Garden in a Glove for a Fun Science Project at Home

    Dan
    28 Aug 2015 | 9:43 pm
Whether it is catching bugs in a jar, collecting rocks, or climbing in trees my son loves to explore the world around him. He is at the age where his curious mind wants to know how things work, which is why it was so much fun to do a few science projects with him at home. Growing a garden in a glove is a simple way to teach your child how seeds grow into plants – and you probably have most of the materials already at home. When I was a kid, we learned about plants by growing bean sprouts in a cup. That approach works as well, but using a glove to get things started lets your child see…

Like most families, we are getting caught up in the excitement leading up to the release of the new Star Wars film. My son has taken an interest in all things Star Wars, which I wholeheartedly encourage, of course. We have been watching the new Disney XD series, LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales, which has been a fun way for my son to learn about the characters from the films. For those of us who grew up with Star Wars, it can be easy to forget that our children might not know who Yoda is or why completing the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs is a big deal. My son knows that Darth Vader is “the bad…

Aside from tuition, textbooks are often one of the biggest costs associated with college. I recently started taking a few classes and was reminded of how the costs can add up. The books for just one class can be a few hundred dollars. Student loans take care of tuition, but families often turn to credit cards to finance text books. It helps make the expense more manageable for families because they can pay it off over the course of the semester, instead of having to pay out of pocket all at once. The Barnes & Noble MasterCard is one option that comes with a few perks for parents and…

Disney Infinity 3.0 is now out officially in the UK, and will be hitting consoles this weekend in North America, which means it is time for the reviews to start flooding in.  There have been several events in the past few months where the public and press have been able to get their hands on the game in a playable form, and the overall impressions have been fairly positive.  Getting them down in a final form, however, is the main point of importance since the gaming public has become so desensitized to the press over-hyping everything they come in contact with until the final release.
