Over the years, my wife and I have been members of Disney’s amazing DVC (Disney Vacation Club), proud owners in three Disney properties. We have had many memorable vacations and have been all over “Disney’s World” But the one destination that was missing from our itinerary was Disney’s Hilton Head Resort. For many years, we have wanted to go, but other, more “Exciting” venues tempted our palate and it was always put on the back burner. This year, however we finally made the plunge so to speak and I must agree with Disney…It is a Hidden Gem! But rest assured this is not one of…

For the past several months, I have been covering the beautiful and detailed pavilions around World Showcase, and today we’ll take a look at Canada. Our ally and neighbor to the north have some of the most beautiful scenery and is the second largest country in area after Russia. The country was first settled by the French, but in 1763, Great Britain took control. With both countries colonizing the land, both French and English is spoken. In 1867 the British North America Act united English-speaking Upper Canada (Ontario) and French-speaking Lower Canada (Quebec) with Nova Scotia and New…

  • Mickey’s Halloween Party 2014 Review

Mickey’s Halloween Party 2014 These special ticket Halloween parties have been going on at the Disneyland Resort for many years now, under various names, but I’ve never attended in the past. It just didn’t seem worth it to me to spend the extra money for this after already paying a high price for an annual pass. However, in an effort to do some new things at Disney this year, or rather things that are new to me, I decided to give the special event party a try. So, the question is was I right or wrong about it being not worth the cost? I’ll officially answer that question at the end.

This week I presented the co-founders of Food52 for my Entrepreneurial Spotlight. I was inspired by the website’s tagline, “Helping people become better, smarter, happier cooks.” Although that line doesn’t sum up the website, it’s a great mission for its target audience. Even though I’m not quite ready to come up with a tagline for Joint, it feels like the right time to begin thinking about some branding techniques. In coming up with a tagline, OXP recommends writing down all the words that relate to the business or the message that the product is trying to…

    22 Oct 2014 | 12:50 pm
By Anthony Murphy: At the beginning of the season, my friends and I went to Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest in Gurnee, Illinois. Unfortunately, we picked one of the coldest days in October. There were actually snow flurries in the morning. The good news is that the day warmed up and kept much of the crowds away. Because of this, we were able to experience the rides, shows, and haunted houses. Great America is family friendly from open (11am) to around 4 pm. Afterwards, the scare actors come out. Usually the morning is the time for rides and trick or treating and the night is for the…
  • Disney California Adventure reportedly set to close Luigi's Flying Tires in January

    21 Oct 2014 | 2:59 pm
By Robert Niles: Disneyland cast members have leaked a new schedule that will see Luigi's Flying Tires in Cars Land close next Jan. 12 for an 11-month refurbishment. It's highly unusual for a functioning attraction in a popular land to go down for such a long period so relatively soon after its opening. (Luigi's opened with Cars Land just two summers ago.) Given the unpopularity of the ride with fans and designers, it's easy to jump to the conclusion that this January closure might be the end of Luigi's — at least in its current form.Luigi's Flying SelfiesLet's keep in mind that many fans…

The home of kings and queens in so many fairy tales, castles evoke memories of grand storytelling, setting an inspiring scene for people entering a theme park. But which castles do the best job of inspiring those theme park visitors? Let's set a couple of criteria to judge these landmarks: 1. How much do you want to take a picture of it? And, 2. What can you do in it? For previous Monday Top 10 posts, we've relied on Theme Park Insider reader…

The lighting here is incredible and makes this somewhat ordinary tree-lined path EXTRAORDINARY.A few different colored-lights make this area pure visual magic.A skull and crossbones is projected onto Big Thunder Mountain. The Horseshoe is not immune to the Halloween theming.Although hard to capture with a photo, the Rivers of America benefits the most from the Halloween atmosphere. On the table you can see a photo of the two children she adopted with husband Charles "Buddy" Rogers, Ronald Charles and Roxanne. In this second shot, it becomes clear that the positioning of the children's portrait was crucial to the composition, as it is moved to a different table so that it can still be in view.Zooming into the publication on her lap, it looks like she…

  • Halloween Parade 1955

    21 Oct 2014 | 6:33 am
Getting into the Halloween spirit are these four snapshots of a parade at an elementary school in 1955. It appears the whole school is either in the parade or watching the parade. The first three images are of the parade. First up is a shot of a group of older kids walking and younger kids watching. The pirate is a nice costume. Next up is another view with younger kids parading. The capes and hats for the costumes in the foreground do not appear to be very comfortable. The third image shows even more kids in costume walking in the parade. I am digging the two kids in the foreground dressed…

Going into my own archives of photographs from a trip in 1987. The focus is on Star Tours, the motion simulator ride featuring the Star Wars universe and was drawing large crowds. Being of the right age, Star Wars was a great influence on me and a film series I watched and loved. Star Tours was a great fun ride with a story and set up that placed the guest into the universe. First up is the marquee sign from the long line. Next up is a shot of C3PO working on a Star Cruiser. Unfortunately it was crowded and I managed to get a guest in the image... Last image is of the fun droid working on the…

Three years ago I purchased a fun kid's book at the San Diego Comic Con. The book is The Halloween Kid and the author and artist is Rhode Montijo. The book is a great story and take on Halloween with fantastic art. Rhode was selling the book and of course I had him sign the book for me. This year at Comic Con, Rhode was selling fantastic water color sketches of various pumpkin head jack o'lanterns including this one of a magician performing card tricks. I now have this framed and hanging in my Halloween room. If these items have intrigued you, head over to Rhode Montijo for more artwork from…
  • Busch Gardens Van Nuys California 1968

    16 Oct 2014 | 6:13 am
In Van Nuys during the 1960s and 1970s was a fun theme park located next to a large brewery. The main draw for kids was a boat ride, monorail and lots of gorgeous tropical birds. The main draw for adults was free beer. Busch Gardens was owned and operated by the Anheuser-Busch company adjacent to the large Los Angeles brewery. In the late 1960s the main draw was a lovely Jungle Cruise style boat ride with the jungle filled with hundreds of tropical birds. In addition there was a neat monorail that toured the brewery. Although a strong tourist draw, images of the park are not that common.
  • 1975 Pirates and Autopia

The photographer did not pay attention to the warning of not to take photographs with their flash during this trip in 1975. First image is a you are there on the flat boat floating past the town. The scene of course is of everyone's favorite red head and take a wench for a bride. The next image is much more clear and features my second favorite drunk pirate. This pirate is wallowing in the slop and mud with the pigs. My favorite drunk pirate is the one playing with the kitties. Last image is of a nice yellow Autopia car. I believe this is the Fantasyland Autopia.

    22 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
I am always happy to revisit the wonderful (and much-missed) Nature's Wonderland. What an attraction! Two male elk, almost hidden by trees and shrubs, are battling it out for those barely-interested females. In fact, they girls are actually watching a small black and white TV just out of frame (it is always showing animals programs like "Gentle Ben", "Flipper", "Lassie", and so on). Here's a nice portrait of the rock formations in the desert. They get the job done, but the craftsmen who specialize in rock work have improved by leaps and bounds over the years. The desert looks especially…
  • The Murky Cruise, January 1965

    21 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two more images from a set of slides in which many (but not all) of them are mysteriously dark, and soft focus in places. In spite of the flaws, they still manage to retain some visual appeal - maybe you could argue that they have a "noir" quality. There is stuff to be seen on both sides of a Jungle Cruise launch, which makes for some less-than-optimal photos. Clearly our photographer was trying to capture the dancing natives on the opposite bank, but instead got a silhouetted picture of fellow guests (craning their necks!). I almost expect Crow and Tom Servo to be there too (any…
  • Random Pix, August 1969

    20 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are some more of those August '69 photos; I have analyzed them with my atomic Pictometer, and they fall dangerously close to the "meh" category. Fortunately I am wearing proper lead-lined clothing and safety goggles.Cascade Peak looks pretty in the late-afternoon sunshine; the river feels so empty and still - not a canoe, keelboat, or sternwheeler to be found. If this was a real river, I'd want to go for a swim! But then I remember that the water is Disneyland water, and who knows what's in it.Look at how close those Mine Train tracks get to the lower falls. We need to install a railing,…
  • The Pirate Ship, 1956

    19 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two not-very-exciting pictures featuring that most-photographed ship named for a canned fish product! I am wondering if the photographer was trying to just get a nice photo of that lady and small child who seem to be waving at us from the upper deck (only to have the shot spoiled by those three interlopers)? I kind of think that wasn't the case, since those folks don't show up in any other photos. Maybe the guy with the camera was just really into anchors. I can almost imagine him exclaiming, "Look at the flukes on that baby!", only to get slapped by an outraged woman. This did…
  • Bride of "Train Related"!

    18 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
I have always loved Disneyland's trains, and as my appreciation for them grew over the years, I found that other trains (especially steam locomotives) were pretty appealing too. My guess is that more than a few of the GDB readers feel the same way. So… here are three photos of different trains from around the country. This first one shows a cute little train. "Edaville", what's that? Mr. Wikipedia sez, "Edaville Railroad is a heritage railroad in South Carver, Massachusetts. Opened in 1947, Edaville Railroad is generally regarded as one of the oldest heritage railroads in the United States.

With the recent opening of the Haunted Mansion themed store Memento Mori and now an alleged Jungle Cruise store in the works, what are your thoughts about stores solely based on specific park attractions? I'm a big fan myself especially when it comes to classic Disney attraction. I really like themed merchandise specific to iconic Disney rides (I think Pirates and Haunted Mansion are no-brainers for this). Tower of Terror (though not an old-school Disney attraction), is supposed to be next to get its own specific merchandise line, which will just go in the exit shop for that ride. RUMOR: Is A…

Hey Everyone, I have come here to ask for ideas and help on something I am working on. I thought it might be fun to design a Horizons 2 looking at a current view of the future and trying to bring the original ride into the modern day. I am using Google Sketchup for most of the work and would really like some input from other fans. I am currently uploading it all to a blog to keep track of progress and add any other ideas I may come up with along the process. Here is the link: Horizons 2.0 Let me know what you think!

Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life  There is a special, intrinsic quality to road trips. The restlessness of being cooped up in a car. The music selection. The conversation. The road games. The snacks.  There’s a lot to cover. No matter the intention of the voyage, one constant remains, and that’s the bond of every person in the car being together for the purpose of reaching a place that has some sort…

It’s a game that’s a ride and a ride that’s a game! Toy Story Midway Mania! (TSMM) is one of the most fun and interactive attractions located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The interactive experience that is offered is a trend that Walt Disney World is moving towards, and to me, it is the best to date. The premise of the attraction is that the guests are shrunk down to toy size and Woody, Buzz and the gang are putting on a carnival while Andy is gone. The toys are using a brand new toy that Andy has received for a gift, and they spare no expense in making it a one-of-a-kind experience…

During my most recent visit to Disney World, I was finally able to go “sea” Finding Nemo the Musical (I apologize for any puns I make throughout this post, including this one; just go with it). Before entering the “Theater in the Wild” of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in which the…
  • When Finding Disney Goes Beyond Disney

    Blake Taylor
    22 Oct 2014 | 6:00 am
Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life  There is a special, intrinsic quality to road trips. The idea of jumping in a small, moving thing on wheels toward an intended destination elicits a flurry of different feelings, thoughts, and preparations. How long it will take? The restlessness of being cooped up in a car. The music selection. The conversation. The road games. The snacks.  There’s a lot to cover. No matter the intention of the voyage, one constant remains, and that’s the bond of every person in the car being together for the purpose of reaching a place that has some sort…
  • It All Started With The Carolwood Pacific: “Toy Story Midway Mania!”

    Alex Larson
    21 Oct 2014 | 7:00 am

    Lou Mongello
    20 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
TOPIC: The Rivers of America in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is more than a beautiful, serene waterway that carries guests to and around Tom Sawyer Island. It is a storytelling vehicle rich in history, detail and tributes to real American history and folklore, as well as Disney films and characters as well. It has it’s own, comprehensive backstory, and this week, I welcome you into Liberty Square and Frontierland, and aboard the Liberty Belle, as we virtually explore the history of the Rivers of America. We will discuss it’s current and former attractions, including the Mike Fink…

By Guy Selga Jr. I was in Tokyo Disneyland last week as part of TouringPlans Everywhere and got a chance to see the new nighttime spectacular that premiered earlier this year. The show is called Once Upon a Time and uses the same projection technology seen in Celebrate the Magic at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and Disney Dreams in Disneyland Paris. Once Upon a Time is presented on to Cinderella Castle and features Mrs. Potts and Chip as they take the audience through various classic Disney animated films like Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, through newer films like Tangled and…

By Derek Burgan As part of the recent TouringPlans Everywhere promotion, I was lucky enough to set sail on my first ever Disney Cruise aboard the Disney Wonder. As a whole, I was blown away by the experience, but one thing that stood out to me was how much fantastic merchandise was available onboard the ship. Last year I sailed on a Royal Caribbean cruise, and despite an incredible sailing, found absolutely nothing in their gift store worth buying. Recently, I have been making my way around various Disney resorts and finding there is very little unique merchandise within the gift shops.
  • Traveling with Seniors: In the Parks

    Lisa Gilmore
    22 Oct 2014 | 3:00 am
By Lisa Gilmore In the first part of this two-part series installment, we discussed how to plan and be proactive when traveling with senior citizens. In this second installment, we’ll tackle navigating the parks! There are some obvious concerns that tend to come to the forefront of park touring with anyone with limited mobility, or anyone who fatigues easily (basically, everyone who’s not a marathon-runner). Standing in long lines, walking miles and miles each day, heat and humidity, are all things to keep in mind when you start planning your park days. Navigating the parks with a senior…

If you missed the first entry, which covered The Incredibles, you can check that out here. Today I’ll be taking a look at an all-time Disney animated classic, The Jungle Book. When you hear that Jungle Book has no attraction presence at Disney World, you probably think, “Wait, that can’t be right.” I mean, with a park entirely…

  • 2014 Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Showcase Recap

    Carrie
    3 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Ride Review

    Carrie
    23 Sep 2014 | 10:00 am
The one thing Patrick absolutely had to do on our August trip to Walt Disney World was ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. When we realized his schedule only allowed us to try for it on a Saturday morning, we bit the bullet and made an early reservation at Crystal Palace for breakfast in order to get as close as we could to the rope before it dropped. (Do not fear for our immortal souls: They hold guests who are already in the park near Cosmic Ray’s until the guests at the gate have been escorted to that spot, so everyone gets the same shot at speed-walking toward the Mine Train.)…

I kept saying I wasn’t going to write a report on Patrick’s crazy last-minute work trip to Walt Disney World a few weeks ago because I spent most of my time in the room working too. But when we did have a free moment to explore together, we noticed some pretty striking changes since our last visit, 18 months ago—enough that Patrick has been encouraging me to write about what we thought. (I’ll be doing a separate post on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.) The Re-Learning Curve I am a professional author and editor of guidebooks to the Disney parks, but it took me half a day at…

A couple weeks ago, Patrick was sent to Walt Disney World on a top-secret project, and I got to tag along. (And when I can tell you more about what he was working on, I surely will!) I’m working on a post about all the differences we noticed after an 18-month absence that included the introduction of MyMagic+, but it’s kinda depressing me just writing about it, so here’s something AWESOME we saw instead! Just days before we left, the first photos emerged of the newly remodeled Captain Cook’s counter-service restaurant at the Polynesian (Village) Resort. I immediately…

We’ve had a handful of opportunities to visit Club 33 over the years, and though I’ve had the best intentions of writing up a trip report each time, I’ve just never gotten around to it. Memorable experiences include my Birthday No. 33 at Club 33, a Ryman Arts Foundation breakfast, and the time Patrick arrived with food poisoning, tossed his cookies into the lobby wastebasket, and still had to pay $90 for a meal he didn’t get. But most of my reports would have been about the same: celebrating some milestone, drooling over the historical details, snarking about the Blue…

When seeing Howlers Peak Ropes Course, my first thought was “wow, that is really high.” Second thought was, “And you are dangling up there by only a rope? Crazy!” Howlers Peak is a new outdoor activity at Great Wolf Lodge in Washington. You can climb up to 50 feet in the air, zoom down multiple zip lines, traverse narrow rope obstacles, and in the end you’ll want to do it all over again. It may look treacherous, but Howlers Peak is a lot of fun. To participate in Howlers Peak, you first need to get suited up in a full body harness. The harness gets tightened…
  • How to Use an Intel 2 in 1 Laptop to Display Photos on Your TV

    Dan
    18 Oct 2014 | 4:54 pm
We will have several family members visiting over the next few months, which means it is prime time to share some family photos. Most of our images are either saved on our computer or phone, which can make it difficult to share unless grandma and grandpa are sitting right next to you. Even then, no one really wants to squint at a picture on a small screen. We have an Intel powered 2 in 1 laptop and an Xbox 360 in our house, which is all we needed to do a photo slideshow on our family TV. To get the photos on the big screen, I just installed the OneDrive app on our laptop and then copied our…

I am spending this week in Orlando for a tech conference and then am off to New York for more work stuff next week. This means I will be spending some quality time on an airplane and the cramped seating arrangement makes it difficult to get much of anything done. Having WiFi on a plane is great and all, but I usually don’t have enough space to open my laptop. Intel processors are powering a new type of computer called a 2 in 1, which is basically a single machine that can work as a tablet or a laptop. I have been using a Lenovo Yoga for a few years, which can be folded back into a…

I’m in Orlando this week for a business trip, but this visit is special because my wife and son came along with me. The majority of my time will be spent talking tech in convention halls while my family gets to play in the theme parks. But we have a few days together at the tail end of the trip for some family fun. Most families probably think of mouse ears and castles when you mention an Orlando trip. But even though I have visited this area countless times, the Kennedy Space Center remains one of my favorite side trips. We often see space travel depicted by Hollywood, but we rarely…
  • Using Your WiFi Network to Control GE Smart Light Bulbs? Now That’s a Bright Idea!

It is safe to say that we have a high tech household. We have multiple tablets and computers. Each of us have a smartphone. We control our thermostat and sound system using WiFi. We have a lot of devices connected to the internet, which is why I couldn’t resist adding GE smart light bulbs to my cart when I saw them at The Home Depot. So the first question everyone asks – Why do you need to control your lights from your phone? Can’t you just flip a switch on the wall? And yes, you can still turn on the lights the traditional way. But these WiFi enabled light bulbs can do a…
