    1 May 2015 | 12:00 am
Horace Horsecoller has the great distinction in being one of the first of the collection of barnyard animals to become Mickey’s friend. He was created by Ub Iwerks and has the characteristic “Rubber Hose” style typical of the early Toons. He is also recognized by his trademark “Horsecoller” always around his neck and a bow-tie. Horace first appeared as Mickey’s plow horse in the 1929 short the “Plow Boy”. In the short he is just Mickey’s plow horse but on cue he could stand on his hind legs, his hooves turned into hands with gloves on and then back to a plow horse…

There is perhaps no name on earth that when invoked can release a flood of emotions and memories then that of Walter Elias Disney. Ask anyone what Disney means to them, and the majority will say…Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, and for most today, Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Cruise lines and Time shares. But to anyone lucky enough to be a member of the “Baby Boomer” crowd, the Mickey Mouse Club will command center stage. This children’s variety show was Walt’s second foray into a television series, the first being “Disneyland” later retitled the “Walt Disney anthology…

All Disney fans and historians know that Walt Disney had made more innovations and firsts in animation than most. Walt was above nothing else, an innovator, dreamer and many consider him a seer, who seemed to know what would work, amid all his naysayers, including his own partner and brother Roy and wife, Lillian. Walt and his team’s contributions to animation and the film industry are still heralded today. The first that comes to mind is “Steamboat Willie” the first synchronized sound cartoon. However, it was not the first. The first publicly shown sound-on-film cartoon was an…

Disney is the world leader in family movies, beginning with the classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937 to the present. And throughout the years he has produced many which stand out among fans and critics alike, but the one animated classic that most consider his “Zenith” is Dumbo, the story of a child (Baby Elephant) who is teased and mocked at because of a physical abnormality (His huge ears) and how he eventually achieved success because of this characteristic, not in spite of it. He had only his mother, Mrs. Jumbo and a sympathetic mouse named Timothy for support.

The Adventureland Picture Gun features some entertaining images from the jungle and is filled with various wild animal images. I believe the yellow one is the first version. A fun toy in a fun package.

For Amazon Belle, the Jungle Cruise Ticket Booth. Cost for the ride in May of 1959 was 50 cents or one D Coupon (the highest coupon in the ticket booth at the time.) The theming fits the Adventureland setting with pole construction featuring aged wood and whitewashed window frames. An interesting note is that the ticket seller is female, even though they could not operate a Jungle Cruise boat. Since Amazon Belle was so excited (just like a kid the night before a Disneyland visit), I have posted both images. And to answer a question from Major Pepperidge, I believe the images were photographed…

Here's an odd pair from 1961's Frontierland. I wish they were more exciting, but what can you do. I actually sort of like this detail of the Keel Boat, "Gullywhumper". The sign has been decoupaged on by Mike Fink, who always did like an afternoon of "arts and crafts". He was out of glitter on that day. Notice the paddles, which were presumably there in case the boat's motor conked out. While I would prefer to ride up top, I would go back in time and ride down below as well, and take plenty of flash pictures to preserve what it looked like (for those of us who have no idea). I'm sure it…

I really had hoped that it would survive until I was done with my blog, but I guess I'll have to go out and buy another one. Should I get the $200 scanner, which will do the job (nicely, I'm sure), or go for broke and get the $700 scanner with all of the fancy bells and whistles? I'm getting down to the last of the wonderful vintage Kodak Instamatics that were so generously given to me by "Mr. X"... most of the remaining examples are pretty darn nice! Like this one, showing the Matterhorn as seen from Tomorrowland (right near the Yacht Bar). The "snow"-capped peak gleams against a blue sky; colorful Skyway buckets travel to and fro, while a tomato-red Peoplemover train passes on the track above. The guard rails have been added to the Peoplemover cars, but there doesn't seem to be anybody on board for some reason. Notice the climber on the Matterhorn, as well as…

This time we're visiting Main Street - although one image might be considered an exception.Night shots are all-too-rare; film stocks were generally just not fast enough 50 years ago. That's why  this lovely photo (originally posted in 2007) of West Center Street and the Flower Mart is so special. Beautiful!OK, I know this isn't "Main Street", but my archives folder for Main Street includes the "Entrance"  and parking lot. Now the whole world knows my shame. Still, I…

It's time to use up some "leftuggies"! We'll start with this nice photo of the "Fred Gurley" above the left tunnel into Town Square (circa 1966). Although it looks like it was not a hot day, the green ventilation door on the cab of the Gurley is open (and the hatch on the roof is as well) - I'm sure it got toasty inside on most days. The old new stand is to our left. You can see a tiny blue mouse-ear balloon floating away - how many times a day did that happen? The view of Town Square is tantalizing, I really want to walk in! Zooming way WAY in, I spied the top of a postcard…

  • Question Magic Eye Theater: Why did they make the screen like that?

    rezpeni
    24 May 2015 | 5:33 pm
One thing about the Magic Eye theater I am curious about, why did they decide to cut off the top left part of the screen? I don't remember it being like that during the original run of Captain EO, I just wonder what they were thinking? Now during all the movie previews and screening the top left is cut off. It's just kind of a head scratcher.

I just returned from my Disneyland Vacation. I spent 4 days in the parks with a mom and her daughter. Annette and Carissa were first timers to both California and the Disneyland Resort. Carissa is 18 years old, and we used the DAS program throughout our trip. She was a little shy at first with the characters, but as the days went by, she became an old pro at the Photopass Process. These are the favorites from the Pictures that we put on a Photopass CD. I hope you enjoy them. We enjoyed having them taken. I think the Photopass Program is a wonderful thing, and the Photographers do a marvelous…
  • Chat Did anyone else see Tomorrowland this weekend?

    DrFink
    24 May 2015 | 3:35 pm
To me, it appeared quite obvious that Disney was kind of banking on the new film Tomorrowland to be good and/or successful so they'd have an excuse for a potential refurb of the land inside the park that isn't Star Wars or Marvel. Between the theater preview and the matching color schemes I figured it was a big possibility if not something already in the works. I went and saw the movie today and I just have to ask... did anyone else see it this weekend? I honestly thought it was really bad. They couldn't figure out what they wanted the plot to be and Tomorrowland itself wasn't even a real…

  • New Tomorrowland Movie Posters and Trailer – Review of the Epcot Sneak Peek

    Suzannah Mitchell
    20 Apr 2015 | 1:58 pm
Over the weekend, an extended preview began on both coasts to showcase Tomorrowland’s May 22nd release. In Epcot, the preview took the place of the much beloved (or much despised from some fans who don’t “get it”) Captain EO starring Michael Jackson. I am firmly in the LOVE category with Captain EO, but I feel like us getting a second chance to enjoy the rag tag band of space misfits led by the infamous Captain EO, and the film itself getting a second life among a new generation was a great gift from Disney to us. I would love if ALL of Epcot could return to its…

Walt Disney World is so much more than restaurants, attractions, characters and shows. For the really sharped-eyed guest and of course, Disney fanatic, there are realms and realms of visual and audio inputs for the senses. If you listen carefully, you’ll always hear a Disney song from the movies or a classic Disney short. With the WDW Radio Alaska Cruise setting sail soon, I thought I’d show you how to make some decorations for your door. Decorating your stateroom door is a very popular thing to do, and I love it because you get to show your Disney Side! Disney Cruise Line is more than happy to let you decorate your door, but, there is one rule. Any kind of tape or adhesive can ruin the doors. Since the doors are magnetic, magnets are the only thing you can put on there. So the first thing I’m making is: “Disney Bounding” People Magnets In this craft, you’ll be making a magnet…

As my in-laws were on board and could watch our son, Walt, during some of the activities, I wanted to try something for adults and something for the family. We settled on the tile-coaster making craft time and then, based on my in-laws recommendation, the mixology seminar. Since the WDW Radio…

  • How to Plan a Private Dessert Party at Walt Disney World

    Carrie
    4 May 2015 | 10:00 am
I get a LOT of comments and questions on my Plan a Small Private Event at Walt Disney World page—specifically, about private dessert parties during fireworks shows. These are a great way to celebrate a special occasion at Disney that most people think is reserved only for weddings and corporate events. But Disney Catered Events will actually work with groups as small as 10 (and sometimes smaller—your mileage may vary) as long as the majority are staying at a Disney-owned and -operated hotel. I’ve always had the pricing for every Walt Disney World event venue in Chapters 3 and 5 of…

  • Have a Monster Truck Rally in Your Living Room with the Road Rippers Piston Thumper

    Dan
    19 May 2015 | 2:07 pm
My son squealed in delight as the orange and white truck bounced over the rows of race cars. Last night, we had a monster truck rally in our living room and the Road Rippers Piston Thumper was the main attraction. At the press of a button, the engine roared to life, the motorized pistons lit up, and the suped up truck drove over my son’s collection of Toy State vehicles. Whenever my son has friends over, his collection of cars are the most played with toys. The kids seem to love how each of the Toy State vehicles have lights and sound, with most having a unique motorized action. The…

We have two vehicles in our household, which means we also have two car seats for our son. Having the second seat makes life easier when we have a change to our routine. For example, my wife was recently sick which meant I needed to take my son to school. With the extra seat in my car, we were able to head out right away without having to fumble with transitioning the seat from one car to the other. It is also handy to have an extra seat when my son has a friend over. Having the extra seat gives us the freedom to take the kids to the park without having to ask the parent to leave their own…

Where was Walt Disney born? Marceline, Missouri is often referred to as Walt’s boyhood home, but the famous animator was actually born in Chicago, Illinois. I was in Chicago earlier this week and took a little detour on the way to the airport so I could see the home that Walt Disney’s father, Elias Disney, built by hand in the 1890s. It would be easy to pass by the home at 2156 N. Tripp Avenue without realizing the significance of the building. The home has suffered from years of neglect and there is not a historic marker anywhere. The house simply blends in with all the other homes in…

We had a fun little adventure last weekend. The Alaskan cruise season just kicked off and my wife and I were lucky enough to get a tour of the ms Westerdam from Holland America Line. Taking a cruise is one of the best ways to take the stress out of your vacation. You don’t have to drive anywhere. The ship is your hotel and does all of the traveling for you. All you need to do is disembark when it stops and then head out for an adventure. And of course there is the food. Most cruise ships have enough variety to offer you something different for each day of your voyage. But you know what sold…
