Disney is the world leader in family movies, beginning with the classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937 to the present. And throughout the years he has produced many which stand out among fans and critics alike, but the one animated classic that most consider his “Zenith” is Dumbo, the story of a child (Baby Elephant) who is teased and mocked at because of a physical abnormality (His huge ears) and how he eventually achieved success because of this characteristic, not in spite of it. He had only his mother, Mrs. Jumbo and a sympathetic mouse named Timothy for support.

  • The Newly rehabbed “HUB”…

    16 Mar 2015 | 4:21 pm
After much time behind the construction walls, Disney finally unveiled the newly rehabbed area known as the “Hub” This central location in the middle of the Magic Kingdom was the brainchild of none other than Walt Disney himself. He wanted an area in his new Disneyland where people can access all of the lands easily, and have a centralized “Meeting Point” that no one could miss. Since, all the Magic Kingdom parks have this feature. However, over the years as the attendances have risen dramatically, the area around the Castle was getting a tab bit crowded. Trying to find space to…

The fable of the three little pigs has been told for centuries. It has become familiar to millions since Walt Disney re-told the story in his successful 1933 animated cartoon. Walt kept true to the story in most ways, but he toned down some of the violence a bit from the original tale. Because of Walt and his animators, the iconic pigs and their adversary the Big Bad Wolf, not to mention the famous song “Who’s afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” which helped millions of depression-era folks get by have become an integral part of the American culture. So how did the original tale or fable…

Walt Disney World is so much more than restaurants, attractions, characters and shows. For the really sharped-eyed guest and of course, Disney fanatic, there are realms and realms of visual and audio inputs for the senses. If you listen carefully, you’ll always hear a Disney song from the movies or a classic Disney short. However for me, it is the visual. So many guests just walk around, oblivious to what the Imagineers have placed right in front of them, and hardly anyone gives a second glance. Have you ever wondered what the writings on the crates in front of Min and Bill’s…

Walt Disney has given the world some of the most memorable characters, both animated and real life. From “Alice” from the Alice comedies, Peg Leg Pete, Horace Horse Collar and of course, Mickey Mouse to Captain Nemo, Zorro and many more, the list is almost endless. I decided to choose a “Live Action” character from one of Walt’s most beloved movies, “Mary Poppins” Most movies have a supporting character that is pivotal for the movie’s development and the character of “Bert” is no different. Bert is a Cockney jack-of-all-trades that Mary Poppins uses indirectly in her…

Now that you’ve made the decision to go on your Disney vacation, where to begin? You have likely decided which Disney destination you are planning to visit and the guidelines below are fairly generally and apply to most Disney destinations. First, begin by selecting the time frame when you wish to go. And how long you wish to go for. Because Disney is a popular destination for many travellers, you must factor in time of year to allow for the crowd factor to see how that influences your choice. Travelling in low season (not holidays, during school year, etc) will allow you to take…

    Dave DeCaro
    1 Apr 2015 | 4:30 am
So often we get stuck in a rut. Even though San Diego is a pretty large city, I typically stick to the area I live in and the one where I work. Before I moved back here in 1999, my trips to San Diego centered around the beach. Nowadays, unless there's a photo shoot, I rarely take advantage of the ocean that is only about 10 minutes from my door. La Costa is a little town just north of downtown San Diego, less than 25 minutes from my house. Yet, staying at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa made me feel as if I was hours away in either Palm Springs or Santa Barbara. The grounds are beautifully…

Just because and for no other reason I am presenting a trio of Keel Boat images today. First up…October 1958. Dang, I wasn't even born yet! The Bertha Mae is definitely my favorite Keel Boat; I love the green shutters. I can't quite figure out the sleeveless shirt that the cast member steering the boat is wearing. Must have been a hot day!Going back two years to October 27, 1956. The 27th; not the 28th or the 26th…these were clearly marked "27th."This cast member looks like he wandered off the set of Ma & Pa Kettle. What a difference from the sleeveless one of 1958.Last one is from June…

Looking through the front window, Millicent sees the uniquely magnificent Towers in front of her. "Pull the car over, Harold!" Clutching her fur wrap, she poses in front of the entrance sign.Zooming in for the signage:I am loving the contrast of a Sunday-best clad Millicent roaming through the informal yet magnificent Watts Towers.Something about the old vs. new, the establishment vs. the rebels. • Skyway and Grog 1958

    1 Apr 2015 | 6:29 am
Two more images from a trip to Disneyland in 1958. First up is a "meh" view of Sleeping Beauty Castle from the Skyway. Major made the observation that the camera angle is low, so the pictures may have been taken by a child. That would explain why there is almost more interior of the bucket than the castle. The second image is probably of the photographer. She is on the deck of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship restaurant with the great vending machine in the background dispensing Pirate Grog. Also note another nicely designed trash can next to the vending machine.
  • The Boring Photographs of the Group

    31 Mar 2015 | 6:10 am
These two photographs from the same trip in 1958 are pretty boring. However, I like to show the entire grouping so you can see how the photographer saw Disneyland during their trip. And of course, there is never a bad photograph of vintage Disneyland and one can always see something fun or interesting. First up is a fairly bad photograph of Sleeping Beauty Castle that also is damaged and the developing seems off with a gray cast to it. What is cool about this image is the waste receptacle right in the middle of the picture. Disneyland has always had the nicest trash cans. The next image is an…

Two views of Sleeping Beauty Castle taken in 1958. The original photographer liked the castle as there will be some more views of the Castle coming up. The first is very artistic with the water feature in the foreground, Carnation Gardens on the left hand side and the castle off in the background. The second view is a closer shot of the castle from the same side. This view is more common.

Could you take a picture of a stagecoach and then a Home of the Future! Two more 1958 photographs from Disneyland. The first picture shows the young guest waiting for her chance to ride the stagecoach. The cast member definitely looks perfect for the role. And Major, she is just starting to fold the guidebook here...and it looks like the 1957 guidebook. The next image is of the wonderful Monsanto House of the Future. I really like the light fixture that can be seen in the window.

A few weeks ago it became clear to me that my 2015 "April Fools' Day" images were just not working out; my ideas weren't that great to begin with, and then the execution turned out to be much more difficult than I anticipated. Rather than present something half-assed (it wouldn't be the first time), I have decided that after almost nine years, maybe I can present a few of my past efforts. It seems that I have managed to misplace (or discard?) the original high-res files for most of these silly images, which is a bummer, considering how much time I spent on some of them. ANYWAY, let's…
  • Random Images, August 1968

    31 Mar 2015 | 12:01 am
Here is an assortment of images from a lot of slides circa 1968.We'll start with this fun one, showing a colorful Frontierland. There's lots of flowers and plenty of benches to rest on. To our right is the gazebo where the Trio Gonzalez performed - you can see a guitar sitting there waiting. In the distance is Casa de Fritos with those painted palm-frond umbrellas. I love details like the dress on the little girl to our right; those bright stripes are almost psychedelic.Next we move a bit to the east to look at Sleeping Beauty Castle; I always like this angle, it's cool to see it so closely…
  • Tiki Room, August 1969

    30 Mar 2015 | 12:01 am
I can never get enough images of Disneyland's classic "Enchanted Tiki Room". I'm so glad that it is still entertaining guests over at the entrance to Adventureland. Presumably this was taken by somebody waiting to get into the pre-show area. You can see Uti (next to the Tiki Room shield), standing in that stylized canoe (which makes sense, since she is the goddess of fishing). As for the rest of the scene, I can't help noticing the amazing variety of materials; thatched roofs, bamboo, vines and plants, hand-carved elements, painted decoration… and then there are the strange and exotic…

Sometimes I wish there was some kind of wonderland. Maybe a donut wonderland? No… that's not it. A twerking wonderland? Hmmm, that's not quite right either. A daytime TV wonderland? I've got it! "Nature's Wonderland"! Perfecto! These are from a lot of slides that tended to veer toward the weirdly dark and moody. These aren't too bad though! I think 90 percent of Nature's Wonderland photos were taken in the Rainbow Desert area, and these are no different; In this first one, our vantage point seems kind of high up… we are at eye level with those tall saguaro cacti, and even as high as…

I wasn't sure what to post on this "Anything Goes Saturday". I had two vintage slides of Hot Springs, Arkansas ready to go, so… why not those? Hot Springs is (as Wikipedia tells us) Arkansas' 12th largest city. It got its name from the natural thermal water that flows from many springs. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the water coming to the surface fell as rain 4,400 years ago! I am assuming that it has the delightful "rotten eggs" smell that so many other hot springs have. Romantic! The photo below shows Central Avenue (now the "Central Avenue Historic District"); Hot Springs has…

  • Review: Tutto Italia Ristorante in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion

    Kim
    31 Mar 2015 | 9:43 pm
Nestled in Epcot’s Italy pavilion at Walt Disney World, Tutto Italia Ristorante is open for lunch and dinner. Welcome back DFB guest author Rebecca Dolan with a review! Epcot’s Italy had long been one of our family’s favorite places to dine since we started visiting in the ‘80s. We were huge fans of the pavilion’s original restaurant L’Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante, and were admittedly a little crushed when we heard it was going to be closed and replaced with Tutto Italia. (Yes, this happened like seven years ago, but the wound is still fresh.) Learn About:Tutto…

So… Frozen Fun ends in Disneyland on May 15th, and Frozen Summer Fun LIVE won’t return to Disney’s Hollywood Studios until June 17th. That’s one full Frozen-free month… What’s an Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf fan to do?!? What will we do when there’s no Frozen Fun?! Fret not, Frozen fans! In the downtime between the two events, Disney is releasing a few treats in honor of “Frozen Fever,” the film short that can currently be seen on the big screen prior to showings of the live-action “Cinderella” film. As in the film short, these treats go about the task of…
  • Photo Tour: The 2015 Grand Floridian Resort Easter Egg Display in Walt Disney World

    Wendy
    30 Mar 2015 | 9:11 pm
It’s one of my favorite times of the year at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort! Every spring in the weeks preceding Easter, the Grand Floridian Bakery Team is given the opportunity to create some absolutely spectacular Easter Eggs for guests to enjoy. And the best part? The Eggs are made of CHOCOLATE. There are other ingredients involved, too, such as fondant, icing, and cocoa butter. But no matter what they are made of, they are all edible! 2015 Grand Floridian Easter Egg display The Easter Eggs have been a Grand Floridian tradition for 19 years, but this is just the fourth year that the…

I was scrolling through instagram and saw a photo in my feed of the penguin statue in the lobby of the Grand Floridian Villas (it just happened to be the fabulous @rbrent from the Disney Parks Blog!). I was about to double tap to like the picture (who doesn’t love penguins?), when I kept reading and saw that it said “(ps, this is made of chocolate!)” and I stopped and went “huh?” and re-looked at the photo. It was then that I noticed the giant bird cage in the background and said to myself, “oh! that’s the regular Grand Floridian lobby!” What I…
  • REVIEW: Disney’s Live Action Cinderella Honors and Updates the Original Tale

    Suzannah Mitchell
    13 Mar 2015 | 11:04 am
I’ve discussed before on this very site, that I was not super into princesses growing up. Unlike those born 10 or so years after me, Disney princesses were not as…well, everywhere as they are now, and have been for the last 20 years. Prior to the Walt Disney Animation Studios release of the The Little Mermaid in 1989, the last princess animated by Disney was Sleeping Beauty, released a whopping 30 years before. Cinderella was 9 years before that, and Snow White 13 years before that. So while Disney did become synonymous with retelling classic fairy tales and giving us beautiful…

    9 Mar 2015 | 1:03 pm
If you are like me, you’ve been looking forward to this film when it was just a title – Tomorrowland. The name held so much promise and hope…getting to see sneak peeks at the Disney D23 Expo in 2013, was just enough excitement to make believers out of so many. Combined with the alternate reality interactive game The Optimist that played out in California, by fans all across the country before the Expo, leading up to a final adventure where participants received a Tomorrowland pin, the build up for this film has been immense, among Disney nerds like me. During the most recent…
  • Why Epcot’s Flower & Garden Festival is My Favorite Food & Wine Festival

    Suzannah Mitchell
    3 Mar 2015 | 8:14 pm
The Epcot Flower and Garden Festival is entering its 22nd season at the Walt Disney World Resort. I’ve been attending from the start, and it’s always held a lovely place in my heart as a fun way for Epcot to show its colors in a unique way. When the rest of the world is craving spring in all its glory, even those of us in Florida are ready for some color, butterflies, and all that spring promises with each new year. Growing up, I used to love going to the New England Flower Show each year (now called the Boston Flower & Garden Show). We’d drive into downtown Boston from…

  • Walt Disney World Magic Madness – Fantasy Four!

    Kendall Foreman
    29 Mar 2015 | 7:00 am
Your votes have narrowed the Enchanted Eight to the Fantasy Four!  The choices were the hardest yet.  Splash Mountain soaked the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover for the entirety of the voting.  Jungle Cruise tried to catch the caboose of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad up until the last day the poll was open.  However, the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean traded leads several times throughout the competition, but the Hitchhiking Ghosts ended up pillaging the Pirate’s treasure in the end.  Up until the eleventh hour, it looked like Pineapple Dole® Whip…

The Sunday crossword puzzle: an institution in many a Sunday newspaper.  Now, WDW Radio provides its own version of the relaxing weekend classic! All of this week’s puzzle clues relate to “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Living in New Jersey, I had the honor, this evening, to see Disney’s newest theatrical adaptation of an animated film: “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at Paper Mill Playhouse.  It was extraordinary.   First playing at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse and now in New Jersey,  this production is most certainly destined for the Great White Way…

If you follow my shopDisney blog, then you know that in October 2014 my husband and I welcomed our son, Walter Dean Wiseman (Walt for short). Unlike what most people think, we did not start out trying to give our son a Disney related name. What started as a joke quickly grew into a name that our family begged us to use, and so on October 2, 2014, we finally introduced our Walt to them, and everyone was thrilled. Even before Walt was born, we had an upcoming trip to Walt Disney World and a 4-night Disney Cruise scheduled for March 2015. We did consider rescheduling and even canceling the trip…

Walt Disney Studios today released the first television ad spot for Tomorrowland (May 22, 2015) outside of the Super Bowl ad titled ‘The One,’ which you can find embedded below. Interestingly enough, while most of the footage isn’t new, there is a new clip of Casey being shot at as she runs from the sci-fi/comic shop, the same one we saw her talk to Keegan-Michael Key and Kathryn Hahn’s characters in the Japanese trailer, only they don’t appear so polite in this clip. One can only imagine that Casey’s pin is quite coveted by quite a few others. In addition,…

The Coca-Cola Company is a longtime sponsor and drink supplier at the Disney World and Disneyland theme parks. It has been present since Disneyland’s opening day of July 17, 1955. Today we have received word that Disney will be cancelling that partnership and instead offering Pepsi products at all Disney theme parks starting July 4th, 2015, to coincide with the 50th Birthday of Pepsi! Frito-Lay which is owned by Pepsi is available at all Disney theme parks and it makes logical sense to extend their previous contract agreement with Pepsi to include soft drinks as well. We have…

  • Disney Quick Tip- Should I Bring Sunscreen?

As a mom, I’m always trying to keep my family safe, and bringing sunscreen on our trips to Walt Disney World is a must, no matter what time of year we go. The Florida sun is much stronger than the sun I am used to in Pennsylvania, and keeping my skin and my family’s skin safe is a top priority.  There’s nothing worse than getting burnt the first day of your trip and being in pain and miserable.  So, it’s definitely wise to bring sunscreen home and I would recommend bringing at least SPF 20.  Not only will you save money, since it’s expensive to buy once you…

My son has good taste in burgers, which is why we drove the Mitsubishi Lancer to Burgermaster  in Bellevue. I don’t have any idea. But I do know that those who like stale PEEPS are fervent in their belief that the sugary marshmallow treats need to age a few days before being consumed. PEEPS come in a variety of shapes and colors and are available most of the year, but I still think of those yellow marshmallow chicks as being the best part of spring.
