What is it with celebrities singing “The Bear Necessities”? First we had UK signers Robbie Williams and Oly Murs give their take on the classic song from Disney’s Jungle Book. Now Loki, aka Tom Hiddleston, is getting in on the act. Better watch it now as we don’t know how long this will stay available on Youtube: This version was performed at the Friendship Works charity gala in November 2013, so technically Hiddleston’s version came first. The water park wars don’t usually get a lot of coverage in the traditional or online media, but it’s on in Orlando. Universal is rumored to be working on a complete re-envisioning of the water park experience (either on the property where Wet-n-Wild now sits or on a new plot of land closer to Cabana Bay Resort). Disney’s two water parks, great as they are, have remained stagnant for years. (It’s been 9 years since Crush-n-Gusher opened). LEGOLAND Florida chose to make their water park an add-on to regular park admission, which I think hurts them a bit. SeaWorld,…

The starting hourly wage of the entry level cast member could be rising to $10.00. According to a report in Bloomberg news, the 25% raise would roll out over two years. Last week, Disney made the offer to the Service Trade Council, a group of labor unions that represents almost half of Walt Disney World’s employees. I see a couple of factors behind this offer. Although I had one day off that was dedicated to organizing all of my stuff, I saw to it that I enjoyed everything I could. In that week, I had to turn in my costumes, help roommates get ready to go, and reflect back on my experience. I went for a walk around my complex and couldn’t…

Disneyland’s Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree hosted the Easter Bunny and some of his bunny friends to dance and greet guests. We were at the park during a peak time, yet barely anyone was in this area. We spent almost an hour here and got to meet some great Disney bunnies plus Mickey and Pluto all dressed up for Easter. In addition to the meet and greets there was live music and arts and crafts.

The Easter Bunny hides plastic eggs through out the house and the kids do a hunt. The eggs are color-coded and there seems to always be a fixed amount. They traditionally find all the eggs before opening them to get their haul. The Easter Bunny decided to let the kids know about our upcoming vacation by hiding letters in random eggs this morning. The kids discovered five letters each and had to work…

Photo: Grim Reaper in Ray Ban Wayfarers by Paullus 23 @ DeviantArt I find the concept of a Bucket List highly depressing. Why should I make up a list of things I want to do before I die? It only makes me visualize my death. Why shouldn’t I, instead, make a list of things I want to do while I live? This confusion was the reason I have never made or even thought about making a Bucket List. Since I am at this time a living entity of flesh and bones, and not just dust in the wind, I shall write my list accordingly. Here are  some of the things I want to do in/with my life: First, I want to…

With the DVC addition to the Polynesian well underway, Walt Disney World is rapidly coming to the point where there may be no DVC hotel project for the first time in years. We can assume Disney won't let that happen. That is leading to rumors of where the next DVC tower will be built.Right now, the most surprising location being talked about is inside EPCOT's World Showcase. A hotel adjoining a theme park is not that unusual of an idea for Disney. Both California Adventure and Tokyo DisneySea have hotels right next to the parks. Disneyland Paris has one right over the main gate. But do you…

When Downtown Disney closed Pleasure Island is was unofficially acknowledged to be a combination of factors including increased competition from CityWalk at Universal Orlando and the fact that the new ticketless version of Pleasure Island was attracting a lot of people who just hung out and didn't spend much money. One of the key observations that has been made about the new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive game is that every land except Tomorrowland has a tie-in to the game. This has led many to speculate that Disney does not want to spend to add SotMK elements only to have to remove them for a giant upgrade to the land that may be in the planning stages right now. The new Disney parks leadership (aka Tom Staggs) and Walt Disney Imagineering agree that Tomorrowland at both the Magic Kingdom and at Disneyland is in great need of help. A hectic Monday precluded me from posting yesterday, so to make up for it I am posting four images of Space Mountain during construction. First up is a dark view of the interior of the ride when it was still dirt prior to the installation of any infrastructure. It is neat that the roof was the first thing finished and then the track installed. I guess doing construction this way there were less rain delays. Next up are two slightly more distant shots of the construction site. The first is taken from an overhead area such as the Rocket Jets gantry or the PeopleMover track or load area. Note…

Continuing the Universal Studios theme is this item for souvenir Friday, a Castle Dracula snow globe. In a great bottle shape, the Universal Monsters frolic at Dracula's Castle. First up is a shot of two trams in the New York section of the ride. I am sure the tram tour guides are describing the New York set and how movie and television sets are constructed. The next view is one of my favorite views with the Glamor Tram with Frankenstein. I believe this is at the load station.

Once again, I am happy to present some photos from Ken Martinez, who has contributed many fun photos from his personal collection in the past!  All of these are from a 1981 ("pre-Eisner"!) trip to Disneyland. He has also kindly written brief descriptions to accompany the photos, so I will let him do the talking. "Sub rehab - This was only one of two times I ever saw the submarine lagoon drained. The other time was in prep for the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage." I never get tired of seeing the waterless lagoon!"Space Mountain - I loved this view of the area with the open air Space…
  • A Pair From May 1973

    23 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
This is an unusual photo taken from Tom Sawyer Island - the way we're looking through the foliage makes it feel more like "Peeping Tom Sawyer Island". Here comes a Davy Crockett Explorer Canoe, while the Mine Train passes beneath Big Thunder Falls. The Mine Train would only be around for another 4 years or so.I love the busy clockwork façade of "It's a Small World"; the mechanical dolls are emerging for their once-every-15-minutes performance, the C.K. Holliday passes slowly by, and large crowds wait their turn to ride the Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed Around the World. Note the costume…
  • The 50th Anniversary of the New York World's Fair!

    22 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
50 years ago today, one of the greatest World's Fairs EVER opened in Flushing Meadows, New York. My interest in this Fair started when I learned about the various exhibits produced by Walt Disney and his Imagineers. But the '64 World's Fair offered so many amazing experiences; General Motors' "Futurama"; Bell System's "The Ride of Communication"; Michelangelo's "Pieta"; Eastman Kodak's giant photo prints (the largest in the world); Sinclair Oil's "Dinoland"; the giant steel Unisphere; to name but a few! What a place, what an incredible confluence of design, architecture, theater, and…
  • A Trio of Instamatics!

    21 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
Happy Monday, everyone! To counteract "Monday malaise", I am sharing some fun vintage Instamatic pictures. This first one is my favorite of the bunch, it's a very nice shot of the Frontierland Shooting Gallery. A Frontierland without guns is like a day without sunshine. Looks like most of the guns are in use, as far as I can tell it's all males. Women are much too civilized! I know that I always enjoyed the challenge of trying to hit those moving targets; and I especially loved the targets that triggered some sort of animation, such a skunks getting ready to spray. This one was in bad shape,…
  • Train & Twain, October 3, 1956

    20 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
I am trying to figure out exactly where the Mark Twain was in this first photo. Is it more along the western edge of the park, or the northern edge? I want you all to look at the man who is carelessly sitting on the railing. Sure, he looks cool, but wait until the Mark Twain has to slam on its brakes to avoid an out-of-control keelboat. He'll be sorry!Aaaaaand just because I have to use it someday… here's the Twain as it returns home. Someday Cascade Peak will be right about where that Stagecoach is, but for now it is just hills and pine trees.

SpacemanSpiff's amazing thread about the California Mission restoration project has been locked. I was wondering if anyone knew what was happening with the project. Is anyone working on it now? Are there plans to continue work? Does anyone have any pics? I found the restoration photos very interesting and hope that someone has news about this. Here is a link to the original post if you missed it. http://micechat.com/forums/knotts-be...storation.html

Honestly, I think the title speaks for itself. I'll get right to the point: What is the downright STUPIDEST thing you've heard/seen someone say regarding Disneyland? Anything thing seen/heard that would be regarded as stupid that pertains to Disney, but not necessarily related to DisneyLAND, will also be accepted.
  • Chat Disney vs Universal: Missing the point

    VulcanCafe
    24 Apr 2014 | 7:52 am
A recent article about Orlando parks marketshare prompted alot of talk about how Universal is owning Disney and taking away marketshare. My point was that Universal is growing the market and attendance at Magic Kingdom is continuing to rise in real numbers. This leads to a bigger question, what is Disney's goal with respect to their parks, and I believe the answer is already evident. MK: Disney's goal is to increase customer $ spent at their parks and baseline capacity (wider walkways, peoplemover rides, etc), not to splash money for new E-tickets that attract more crowds the Magic Kingdom…

I make it no secret that I am not a fan of animal movies. That’s not to say I don’t love movies with animals or nature in them, rather, I am not a fan of watching the “circle of life” in action. I can barely handle eliminating the errant spider that may enter my abode, much less watch a fierce lion take down a gazelle or a chimpanzee mom abandon her  baby (no clue if that’s a plot line of Chimpanzee, I still never saw it!). It might sound funny to highlight a post about Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival by mentioning food, but trust me, the new food booths are the best thing to hit Flower and Garden since, well, since flowers.  Disney started small last year, with just a few food booths, but they've added more this year. Now almost every pavilion has something to offer. Here are a few items you'll find.Frushi from Japan.Frushi, basically fruit sushi, was a big surprise, a delightfully refreshing option with a subtle taste.  A homemade fruit roll takes the place of seaweed, with coconut infused,…

If it seems like there's a change to Fastpass+ every day, you're right. This $1.5 system is huge and it's changing how you tour the parks.  The  newest twist according to the rumor mill? Starting March 31st, offsite guests (also known as "day guests" in Disney speak) will be allowed to make their Fastpass+ selections online up to 30 days in advance, a change from having to make them in the park the day of their visit. This means shorter lines at the Fastpass+ kiosks in the parks, as well as the ability to do more precise planning. Currently, annual pass holders staying offsite are…

    25 Mar 2014 | 5:00 am
The Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge opened last fall in Hollywood Studios and since then, it's become a popular location to meet up for drinks and snacks. Located right outside the restaurant, the lounge is a cozy spot with just about a dozen tables.  At present, you can't make dining reservations for this location, but it's open all day so if it's crowded when you get there, go on a ride or take in a show and then try again later.  Kids are welcome, of course, but the menu is very grown-up and drinks are served. It's more of a "bar" than a restaurant, so little ones might be bored. We…

I don’t know about y’all, but some days I just crave Disney treats. Today is one of those days. Correction: this WEEK is one of those weeks. Maybe it is because of the stress of finals at school, or maybe it’s just because I find myself longing to be walking down Main Street, USA® in this beautiful spring weather. Regardless, I need my Disney fix, and for now, the kitchen is where I will have to make that happen. This week I am bringing you the recipe for one of the most delicious desserts in Magic Kingdom® Park: the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake from The Liberty Tree Tavern.

Hi Everyone! I am SO happy that Spring is (actually, finally) with us! I spend a lot of time in my kitchen this time of year making muffins and cupcakes for our gatherings. But, I looked around while baking for Easter and realized I needed some new tea towels. So, I came up with this quick craft. This stamped tea towel is for a favorite chef/baker in your life, who also happens to love Disney. It’s so easy to decorate that the kids can make one for Mom on Mother’s Day*. It can even be replicated as favors at a birthday or shower. Wanna “Whip Up Magic” in the kitchen with me? Let’s…

I usually get a few strange looks when people learn that I commute 200 miles each way to work. It takes me about four hours to drive from our Portland home up to the Seattle area. Along the way, I usually drink a few cups of coffee and listen to several podcasts. This routine helps pass the time and keeps me focused during all that time on the road. This is the second time that I have commuted up to Seattle for work. The first time around, I was still driving my Chevy S-10 pickup truck which didn’t even have cruise control or a working air conditioner. This time around, I have our SUV…

    8 Apr 2014 | 12:39 am
As a kid, there was nothing more fun than to play in the mud. I ruined countless shirts and pants with dirt and grime. I captured bugs. I tried to dig a hole to China. I left gaping mud pits in the backyard that my dad had to fill in. It was messy adventure, but digging in the backyard was a special kind of fun. One of the best ways to haul mud, dirt, and rocks is with a giant dump truck. The Toy State Big Rev-Up Dump Truck is about as big as it gets. The truck towers over my son’s other CAT toys and the large truck bed is big enough to carry monster sized loads of dirt. The truck bed…

Source: Disney Parks Blog Following in the footsteps of the wildly popular Wishes Dessert Party at the Tomorrowland Terrace in Magic Kingdom, Disney announced the Illuminations Sparkling Dessert Party at Epcot. Why is this a big deal? Well, Illuminations Dessert Parties have been popular with large groups to get together for bits and bevs on one of the waterfront patios around the World Showcase.  But the pricing minimums make it hard for individuals or even individual families to have this experience. This new event makes that possible. It’s still kind of pricey. $49 for adults (ages…

Frozen’s Anna and Elsa are moving to Fairy Tale Hall in Magic Kingdom starting April 20. So the opportunity to see Disney’s newest princesses using FP+ is such a time saver. As of March 14, you can see that they are loaded in to MDE:   This is a screenshot from May 3, 2014 at Magic Kingdom.
