I have just returned from Disney’s Swan and Dolphin’ 5th annual Food and Wine Classic and I can report that this is the best Festival yet! Since I first covered this increasing popular venue in 2012, I am still amazed how in just two short days, Friday October 31st and November 1st of how much fun can be had where you can drink, eat, mingle, enjoy entertainment and fireworks, all while strolling the causeways around the Swan and Dolphin’s beautiful Crescent Lake. Coinciding with EPCOT’s 19th annual Food and Wine Festival, this Festival gives Disney guests an opportunity to sample both…

Disney characters are world-renowned, recognized by everyone. They are famous for their extended families, Nieces, Nephews, and Uncles. There are Mickey’s nephews, Morty and Ferdie, Daisy Duck’s Nieces April, May and June, Minnies Nieces Melody and Millicent and let us not forget Scrooge McDuck. But perhaps the most famous of the clan are Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Moreover, another fact about the nieces and nephews are no mention of their parents, or history except maybe a brief sentence or two. So a little history of the trio is in order. They began their career in the…

Walt Disney could without any argument be included among history’s greatest legions of Innovator’s, Dreamers and Showmen. Walt had the uncanny ability to know what would work, and was a stickler for perfection. He was also the eternal optimist. No matter what, Walt always had a bright outlook, even during bankruptcy; it seemed nothing could bring him down. Even when his distractors were telling him no, (Walt’s wife Lillian and Brother Roy as Walt planned “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) Walt Disney never wavered a bit, stuck to his guns, and finished his “Dreams” In the end, he…

Max Goof or his given name Maximilian Goof is the son of Goofy Goof, Disney’s lovable but clumsy character. Although throughout his career, Goofy’s wife was never really mentioned, and it was never said what became of her. Goofy himself started out in an obscure role as an obnoxious character named “Dippy Dawg” (The original name given before Goofy) in the 1932 short, Mickey’s Revue. It was not until the 1952 Cartoon “Father’s Day Off” that Goofy was shown with his son Max as a baby. The only brief appearances that his wife had were in the 1951 cartoons’ “Cold War” and…

    26 Nov 2014 | 10:35 am
By Russell Meyer: As temperatures begin to drop in northern climates, and families begin their preparations for their annual Thanksgiving feast, some theme parks are also treating guests to holiday-themed events. Just as Halloween has become a lucrative business of hard-ticketed and full-capacity events for many parks, Christmas is becoming nearly as profitable. Year-round operational parks have been hosting Christmas events for years, but even some seasonal parks are getting into the act. Many parks located in colder parts of the country are limited to simply light displays and holiday…

    25 Nov 2014 | 10:58 am
By Robert Niles: The United States Food and Drug Administration today announced its new rules that will require restaurant chains to post the calorie counts of their menu items on the menus themselves. Up until now, many restaurants have gotten around publication requirements by making calorie counts and other nutritional information either available by request on under-the-counter handouts, or by burying them under small links on their websites. When governments first started requiring calorie count disclosure, some restaurants did publish the numbers on their menus, only to see sales decline…

I am too busy in the kitchen this morning to do much with today's post, so you just have one July 1962 image to savor. Thankfully, a few detailed views can provide some interest, starting off with this Wanted poster for Red Jenkins. You can see this same poster elsewhere in the town of Rainbow Ridge at Disneyland, as witnessed by this undated 1970s shot:Back to the original 1962 shot; did you know that Rainbow Ridge also offered Wagon Repair service along with Blacksmithing? No end to what you could get done in that town! Let's travel back to 1971 for a look at the French Market in New Orleans Square. I was hoping to be able to read the menu, but unfortunately the original image is too grainy to allow that. I am sure there are Disneyland geeks out there who can decipher through the plethora of dots to tell the rest of us what was being served…and just how much it was!Looking through my collection for a comparison shot, I realized that I am woefully deficient in views from that angle of the New Orleans Square Restaurant. Instead, it appears that I have focused on the side that faces the Frontierland Depot.Add…

  • Jungle Cruise Fun With Natives and Hippos

    27 Nov 2014 | 8:00 am
Two more fun and mysterious photographs of the Jungle River Cruise at Disneyland. First up is a nice shot of the natives dancing to celebrate Thanksgiving. I like the giant witch doctor mask and outfit on the right hand side of the image. Next up is a shot of the killer wild animal, the hippo. Responsible for more deaths per year than any other wild animal, the river horse is a ferocious beast. I like the skin and teeth on this specimen. Happy Thanksgiving to all of my US friends!
  • Little Squirt and the African Veldt

    26 Nov 2014 | 5:17 am
Continuing riding the Jungle River Cruise with today's pictures. First up is the matriarch of the elephant group taking her shower with little squirt next to her. This scene is still there today though the rock work is slightly different. Next up is the African Veldt in it's original state. The scene appears to be fresh and new with the plastic wrapping still on the scene. Note that the lion's have not found the cave yet, although they are still watching over the sleeping zebra.
  • The Dark and Mysterious Jungle River Cruise

    25 Nov 2014 | 6:51 am
I always enjoy how the Jungle River Cruise is dark and mysterious, even during the light of the day. Some scenes are as dark and difficult to photograph as the Fantasyland dark rides. The first photograph is of the standing Gorilla located by the banks of the river. The second image is as dark as the first and features a crocodile looking for one of the guests to fall out of the boat and become a snack.
  • Hotel at Night and Matterhorn

    24 Nov 2014 | 5:31 am
First up is a nice image of the Disneyland Hotel at night with the classic Hotel Disneyland neon on top of the tower. In the foreground are the arcade buildings and the monorail beamway. Second image is a duplicate slide, but is so nice I have decided to post it again. Monorail Blue, Skyway and Hans and Fritz climbing the Matterhorn.

    27 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! I don't have anything turkey-related to share today, so I might as well  share some more vintage Instamatics. There aren't very many left...We'll start with this underwater tableau from the Submarine Voyage - one of the sillier scenarios, if you ask me (and that's from a ride with a cross-eyed sea serpent). We all know how aggressive and bloodthirsty the horrible octopus can be; that poor shark was minding his own business when SHLOOP! He found himself wrapped in those suckered tentacles. Just be grateful that he will be lunch, and not you.I'm stifling a…
  • More WDW Snapshots, December 1971

    26 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are the last four vintage snapshots (from a lot of seven), dating from the park's opening year. Walking through the tunnels beneath the railroad tracks brings you into Town Square; there's the train station, looking huge even from this oddball angle. Pluto has stopped to pose with some kids while a mom and her brood wait their turn. Do characters in either park just stroll around anymore? Or is it there always a line? Heading up Main Street U.S.A., we can admire the architectural details, and the 1971 fashions (like those yellow bell bottoms to our right)!Looks like dad is…
  • Two Twains, 1956

    25 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Ay-yi-yi, sometimes I am not sure I can bear writing about another Mark Twain slide. What's left to say? At least these are nice, early views, so they've got that going for them. I was wondering what that thing was in the foreground (the wooden thing with the white trim), it looks like some sort of ramp, although boarding the Twain normally doesn't require a ramp, so I have no idea. Oh, who am I kidding, I still love the old riverboat!
  • New Orleans Square, September 1976

    24 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
I can never get enough of New Orleans Square; it is one of the least-represented lands in my collection (though I have even fewer from Critter Country, and none from Toon Town!).I'm sure many of you recall the woman who ran for mayor of New Orleans back in 2006 who used a photo of Disneyland's New Orleans Square on her campaign web page. Was it on purpose (because it looked so clean), or did somebody not know the difference? Anyway, I'll bet that if you told the general public that this was a photo of the real Crescent City, they'd buy it. The curved wrought iron balconies feel so genuine! By…
  • In Fantasyland, August 1969

    23 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two sort of oddball photos from Fantasyland, circa 1969. The 70's were almost here! While I like this shot of the crowds milling about on a summer day (in between the Carrousel and the Snow White attraction), the photographer seemed to be mighty interested in those cloth banners that provided a tiny bit of shade in that mostly-treeless part of Fantasyland. I'm sure that a typical summer day could easily be in the high 80's or 90's. Or maybe the photographer was interested in the various flags and pennants. Who knows.Hugh Hefner and Snow White have something in common: they both have…

Just curious who paid for and who built all the major Disney/City intersections and themed streets/sidewalks, etc. How was it divvied up between Disney and the City? In particular, all of Disneyland Drive, the Disney Way/Harbor intersection, the bus/taxi/drop-off along Harbor, the Harbor/Toy Story Lot intersection, and all the palm trees, etc. along Harbor and Katella. I know it's an odd question, but I was looking at the DLR on Google Maps and it made me wonder how they split up the cost, construction and maintenance, since there is a tight interface between public roads/sidewalks and the…
  • Chat Is Peter Pan's Flight Overrated?

    Joshua Goodstein
    27 Nov 2014 | 1:16 pm
I personally don't like any version of Peter Pan's Flight, and consider it to be incredibly overrated. Florida's effects are horrible, especially the tin foil and LED "volcanoes," while California's storytelling is the worst of all the dark rides. That isn't to say that California's effects are impressive, or that Florida's storytelling is anything close to coherent, because I don't think that they are. It personally perplexes me as to why this attraction gets the high wait times that it does, even considering its ridiculously low capacity. WDW's is ugly and poorly maintained, while…

So, for one day only, I ask that Disney and Universal fans put aside their differences and spend a moment appreciating all the wonderful things that we can share together, starting with…. # 6 – Disney and Universal Merchandise is…

By Daisy Lauren Hi, Everyone! Welcome to the Best Week Ever here at Walt Disney World! I have so much to share, so let’s get started! :) And what better way to start than with the stunning lobby of the Animal Kingdom Lodge? After all these years I’m still amazed walking in here. • Choosing the Right WDW Discount

    Lisa Gilmore
    26 Nov 2014 | 8:00 am
By Lisa Gilmore As a frequent Walt Disney World traveler, and also not a Florida resident, I’m sufficiently addicted to Disney vacation planning books, podcasts, blogs, discussion groups, and other research areas that can help me sustain my pixie dust addiction without breaking the bank or going in debt. During my years of research, I’ve heard lots of claims of which Disney discount is “best”, and while I trust many of the sources I frequently research, I’ve learned that not all discounts pack the same punch. Depending on your party size, your frequency of visiting the parks, and…

This paring will marry the two in perfect harmony, with TCM receiving credit as the sponsor on all signage and marketing for the attraction. In the queue, guests will enjoy new digital movie posters and will be able to view a new pre-ride video featuring Robert Osborne, the host of many Turner Classic Movies programs, who…

A look through our archives brought me to this Thanksgiving favorite! It's another holiday, and another Disney animated short film. I went hunting for something to help celebrate Thanksgiving and discovered that in 1938 Walt Disney went through a lengthy pre-production on a cute piece entitled 'Pilgrim Mickey' that never got off of the ground and was canceled by the spring of 1939. read more

  • Fozzie Bear: The Cake!

    Carrie
    4 Nov 2014 | 9:00 am
Since I’m not going to have time to write a full trip report of our 72 hours at WDW in September, I’ll try breaking up the interesting bits into individual posts. I’ve already covered Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings 2014 Bridal Showcase and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party + Villains’ Sinister Soiree. Today is all about the cake! Because I am the only one cake-obsessed enough to maintain the DISboards’ Official Cake Chatter thread, I like to order a cake each time we go to Walt Disney World so I can post more info and inspiration for that…
  • Throwback Thursday: Halloween at Dick Van Dyke’s House

    Carrie
    30 Oct 2014 | 12:30 pm
Those of you who see this annually, bear with me. I get a lot of questions this time of year about helping decorate Dick Van Dyke’s house for Halloween. It was this crazy fluke that we knew somebody who knew somebody who helped Van Dyke stage his legendary Halloween displays. Dick Van Dyke LOVES Halloween—he says it’s like Christmas for him, and he likes to go all-out to have the most gruesome, over-the-top display on the block. So for five years we had the privilege of being on the team of folks who helped him, er, execute his vision. In 2013 Van Dyke decided to hang up his…
  • Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party + Villains’ Not-So-Sinister Soiree

    Carrie
    23 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
When we were in Walt Disney World last month, we attended Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for the first time in four years, mostly so we could experience the new Villains’ Sinister Soiree: A Wicked Takeover of Cinderella Castle—because if they were charging $99/person on top of the cost of a party ticket that costs $62–$77/person, it must be starring Michael Jackson returned from the grave and feature brand-new Cadillacs as favors, right?! Despite not being a huge fan of character meet-n-greets, parades or stale candy, I was really looking forward to attending the…
  • 2014 Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Showcase Recap

    Carrie
    3 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Ride Review

    Carrie
    23 Sep 2014 | 10:00 am
The one thing Patrick absolutely had to do on our August trip to Walt Disney World was ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. When we realized his schedule only allowed us to try for it on a Saturday morning, we bit the bullet and made an early reservation at Crystal Palace for breakfast in order to get as close as we could to the rope before it dropped. (Do not fear for our immortal souls: They hold guests who are already in the park near Cosmic Ray’s until the guests at the gate have been escorted to that spot, so everyone gets the same shot at speed-walking toward the Mine Train.)…

  • Behind the Scenes: Building the Annual Great Wolf Lodge Gingerbread House

    Dan
    20 Nov 2014 | 11:09 pm
Great Wolf Lodge has a sweet surprise that will be unveiled in just a few days. The annual gingerbread house, one of the best parts of Snowland, is carefully being decorated by hand in the resort lobby. When complete, the house will be covered with more than 4,000 Holiday Peeps and will be large enough for families to dine inside. For the past few years, my family has visited Great Wolf Lodge around the holidays for the unique experience of dining inside the giant gingerbread house. The design varies each year and Pastry Chef Amie Hanrahan said that a visit to Leavenworth,…
  • The 2015 Kia Soul EV is Super Charged and Fun to Drive

    Dan
    17 Nov 2014 | 12:00 am
Every time that I fill the gas tank on my SUV, I mumble that I should buy an electric car. My wife drives a Kia Sorrento, which gets great mileage. But it takes $75 to fill my 2004 SUV on a good day and closer to $100 when gas prices were soaring. Whenever I see an electric vehicle zipping by on the freeway, I have to wonder if there is a better way. Kia recently introduced its first electric vehicle, the 2015 Soul EV. If you have seen the commercials with the dancing hamsters, you know the car that I’m talking about. The Soul EV is an electric version of what has been one of…
  • JBL Flip 2 Speakers Deliver the Gift of Music for the Holidays

    Dan
    13 Nov 2014 | 11:20 pm
How many times has a song reminded you of a special moment? I heard a 90s song earlier today and was reminded of my first road trip, when I drove out to see my dad in Arizona. Music has a way of bringing out emotion and stirring up memories. And sometimes, music just helps the day go by faster. I added a JBL Flip 2 speaker to my desk at work and found I get a lot more done when Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane are playing in the background. That road trip to see my dad was one of those defining moments in my life. Our relationship had been rocky for a while and I was trying to find a way…
  • Parmesan Crusted Chicken: Here’s an Easy Family Dinner Idea

    Dan
    11 Nov 2014 | 6:15 pm
A few months ago, we decided to change our routine of eating dinner in front of the TV and instead have been making use of our dining room table. Dinner time has become family time, as we share highlights from our day. The other night, my wife made parmesan crusted chicken, which tasted great and only required 30 min to prepare. You basically just use a little Miracle Whip to hold the parmesan cheese and bread crumbs onto the chicken and then bake it at 425 degrees. In a few minutes, dinner is ready. Usually character meet and greets are fairly perfunctory. Kid waddles up, presents the character with an autograph book, the character signs it, gives the kid a hug, snaps a picture, the next kid in the factory line waddles up and repeats the process. But, when given the opportunity, the characters can get really creative with […]
