Our family recently relocated to southern California. One of the biggest perks so far has been living so close to Disneyland.  I love Disneyland. I have been planning a vacation to Disneyland in my head for years. I’ll say actually going is way better, harder, but way better. Visiting Disneyland can be expensive, stressful and there are many unknowns about what to really expect. Since our family decided to purchase annual passes we will be (and have already) visiting a lot. I will be writing a series about visiting Disneyland and California Adventure. Most of our visits will be me with…

First off, let me say I have met Chef Robert Irvine many times. • Facebook • Twitter • Google Plus • Pinterest It seems a lot of people have questions about tickets at Disneyland! The blog post I did on them last year around this time turned into an FAQ of sorts over the last 11 months. Over time, some things have changed and some have stayed the same. Disneyland tickets are still different than tickets at Walt Disney World in a lot of ways. So I thought now was a good time to update! 1. Prices Usually Go Up Once a Year – and if last year is any indication, that time is probably getting close. Price jumps are usually pretty nominal,…
  • New Trailer for Disney’s Planes Soars over Cars Land

    17 May 2013 | 1:07 am
While the first trailer for Planes was largely a take on Top Gun, this new trailer firmly places the film in the land of Pixar’s Cars. What’s nice to see is that the animation holds up the Pixar standards. All that’s left to see now is if the story can too. From above the world of “Cars” comes “Disney’s Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. Earlier this year Alexandria Shankweiler spent three weeks island hopping in Hawaii. As she was hunting for sea glass on Oahu's Mokuleia Beach, she spotted a large rock that looked out of place. As she approached, she realized that it was a sea turtle, perhaps on the beach to escape the 12-foot waves. Shankweiler approached cautiously, she said, and lay on the sand to photograph the turtle. The Los Angeles resident photographed the majestic reptile with a Nikon D700.

  • Star Wars Weekends In Full Force at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

    18 May 2013 | 6:00 am
Just returned from an evening of fun at Star Wars Weekends over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I don’t have time to write a full report this morning, but here are a few highlights. I arrived to late for most of the festivities, but was able to get into Darth’s Mall and catch the new Hyperspace Hoopla. Lots of great merchandise this year, both for the event and fresh from Star Wars too. There was a 10-minute queue just to get in to the store, then if you wanted photos, special merchandise, or a D-Tech figure, there were even more lines. Crazy. That tall Darth Vader doll was…

Betrayal has been announced for ABC’s fall schedule on Sunday night. It will hitch itself to Revenge’s coattails and hope for the best. Judging by this sizzle trailer for the show, it shouldn’t have that hard a time capturing the same audience. It started with a chance meeting at an art gallery. Photographer Sara Hadley (Hannah Ware) and Attorney Jack McAllister (Stuart Townsend) both felt it, a sudden spark and with it, an undeniable feeling of instant attraction. Both are married, albeit, unhappily to other people; she, to successful prosecutor Drew Hadley (Chris Johnson),…

November 24, 2013 Dream come true. Day 1 – This is it! Disneyland day! Before heading to HK Disneyland we had our breakfast in our room. We ate the cup noodles we bought from 7-eleven the night before. We were very excited to start our day but a very unfortunate event happened. I accidentally locked our bathroom door. There was no way to open it because it did not have key hole. We tried our best to use cards but they did not work. Since we had no choice and we really wanted to start our day early, Mel and Kat went to the 5th floor to ask for help. Yiu fai’s front desk was located…

This vintage shot of actor Rock Hudson shows that Canon was his camera of choice. Most likely this is a Canonflex camera, which was introduced in May, 1959. It was Canon's first 35mm single-lens reflex camera, which came with a standard 50mm lens. Discontinued five months after release, approximately 17,000 were produced. Today, you can pick one up for around $100. Follow my Daveland updates on Twitter and view my most recent photos on Flickr. See more Rock Hudson photos on my Rock Hudson photo web page.

Holiday Hill...Lookout Mountain...Lover’s Lane...Snow Hill. All names refer to the same area at Disneyland. Before the Matterhorn rose from the former orange grove covered land in Anaheim, the mound of dirt (which needed a place to go when the Castle moat was excavated) with the many names was directly below the path of the Skyway. Most interesting thing about this shot is that you can see the Omnibus, which once had a route that extended into Fantasyland. The huge support towers of the Skyway were somewhat of an eyesore, and the creation of the Matterhorn helped to cover them up from the…

A few lesser-known signs of Frontierland are featured today, starting off with a January 1958 shot of the Birch-Bark Lodge signage. On a separate note...the security cop in Frontierland is a bit jarring. This Birch-Bark Lodge was one of the many authentic "exhibits" that guests at Disneyland could learn about in the Indian Village. Here's another view of the 1956 Storybook-style map that heralded the upcoming Tom Sawyer Island: If only the photographer had a steadier hand... Zooming in, this has got to be the best view of the Richfield Eagle in my collection; you can even see his red glaring eyes! Howzabout those saucer hats with the red ties? Three new views of the New York World's Fair in 1965. One of the neat things about this set of slides is that they were developed by Sears and have a nice mount. First up is a view of the Avenue of Flags with the Unisphere in the background. The crowd is taking some great pictures. Next up is a shot of a rest area with the Coca Cola Pavilion in the background. I like the bubble structures that were the snack bars. One of my favorite attractions was the US Rubber Royal Tires Ferris Wheel. I wish that the ride was still operational.

And yet another film joins that year...And this is one of the few that's not a Disney film.  New Regency and Ubisoft have plugged in Memorial Day, 2015 for the release of their "Assassin's Creed" film.  Hmmmm.  I wonder what other film will likely be out in May of that year?  The film studio is moving ahead with the Michael Fassbender starring game adaptation. The studio/game-maker studio are moving for forward with production to begin on the film by early next year.  No start date has been announced, but the film, produced by Fassbender as well is being targeted as a…
  • A Beginning And An Ending...

    17 May 2013 | 1:05 pm
So there's news on the the Marvel front...Rumors are circulating hat the character of Black Panther will make an appearance in "Avengers 2" when it comes out in the summer of 2015: The Year Movie Theaters EXPLODE with awesomeness.  There's also a rumor that Marvel will replace Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in that film since he's been conspicuously absent from any of the other…
  • Nolan, Chris Nolan...

    17 May 2013 | 10:56 am
Now this is an interesting rumor...Rumors are starting to float around that Christopher Nolan is in informal talks to helm the next James Bond film (Bond 24).  If you've seen "Inception" then you know the director can make a Bond film as the last act is essentially one.  While it's an exciting prospect to think of a Nolan directed 007 film, the director is deep in pre-production on "Interstellar" and it appears that the schedule to get Bond 24 out in a few years is highly improbable. It's likely four or five years before we'd see a new spy film with Daniel Craig.  That puts him…
  • High & Low...

    16 May 2013 | 12:45 pm
There's a new trailer for Disney's "Planes" film the Mouse just released...The film, the first part of Disney Toon Studios' animated follow up to the "Disney Fairies" series was deemed good enough by John Lasseter that he and head suit, Bob Iger felt it was worthy of a theatrical release.  Now, we don't know if it's as good as they say, but the reports we're getting in, are that the screenings have gone very well, and it's a cut above what was expected to come out. Keep in mind that, whether ou like it or not, the Fairy series was a far better offering for young girls and…

Welcome back to my blog, its been a little quiet lately, "all work and no play", bla, bla, bla.Today we've neat old book from 1957, "This is California".  Karl Obert is the photographer and there are some fine (black and white only) photographs in this book. Where was this taken from?Fairytale Castle... Are those the infamous "Midget Horses"?Looks like a good size audience for the Flight Circle. Some love for Knott's Berry Farm. This must be the "Pike" with that freakish Hi Ride crane thing from hell.Wow...So that's what MacArthur Park was intended to be like. This spot has…

  • Train Stuff

    18 May 2013 | 12:01 am
Today's "Anything Goes" entry celebrates trains. Everybody loves trains, even communists. This first photo shows a beautiful miniature locomotive that was once located at Crandon Park, Florida (famous for its miles of sandy white beaches). From what little I could glean online, this 2 foot gauge train debuted around 1949, and was powered by gasoline rather than live steam. Accounts vary, but it seems to have operated until the mid-1970's, when it was replaced with a completely different train - but as of now none are still there. This next picture is from July 1971, and it features the…
  • Instamatic Pix

    17 May 2013 | 12:01 am
We'll start today's selection with this great, colorful picture of a mom and two girls near the exit to Disneyland. Even though it is the afternoon (that other mom and her kids are done for the day), it looks to me like they are just heading in to the park. Mom acknowledges the camera with a bullfighter's flourish ("Olé!"). The train is at the station, and quite a few posters are visible in the distance. Any idea what those vehicles are to our right? Here's a nice shot of the Fire Department, with the old Chemical Wagon resting inside. I never really noticed that green door before, is that…
  • Views From The New York Pavilion, 1964 World's Fair

    16 May 2013 | 12:01 am
It has been over two months since we've visited the 1964 New York World's Fair, so let's hop in our cardboard box ("Calvin and Hobbes" style) and head back in time. The New York State pavilion was an extremely popular destination, in large part because of the striking bird's-eye views that guests could get atop the 226-foot observation tower. And striking views meant that the cameras came out, resulting in many thousands of photos snapped from up there. This is kind of an interesting view... I'm wondering where the photographer was standing that gave him an even more elevated view as he…
  • More vintage Disneyland pinback buttons

    15 May 2013 | 12:01 am
I love old pinback buttons, and have quite a few. They are colorful, and you can find them relating to almost any interest. Politics, comics, cars, candy, farm equipment, sports, movies, TV cowboys, space exploration... ANYTHING. When the buttons in question are vintage Disney, it's like two cool things in one.Today's examples are, for the most part, non-Mickey Mouse pins. For example, there's the Big Bad Wolf! "The Three Little Pigs" was a sensation when it was released in 1933, and many items were produced bearing the images of the trio of oinkers and the BBW. The "Dumbo D-X" button was…
  • Rivers of America, January 1996

    14 May 2013 | 12:01 am
The remaining portion of my collection that has yet to be scanned grows ever-smaller, and that includes these 35mm negatives from the mid-1990s. So I'm down to "whatever is left"! Anyway, today we will stay near the life's blood of Frontierland - the murky green waters of the Rivers of America. I feel right at home since my Vulcan blood is also green. This is a terrific picture of Cascade Peak, a beautiful feature seen near Rainbow Ridge (back when the Mine Train was still there). One of the canoes has narrowly avoided a dunking beneath the roaring waterfall, which I'll bet was lots…

    toonaspie
    18 May 2013 | 6:32 pm
I recently came across a video of Mystic Manor that displayed the ride's layout and showed how the cars moved along each scene. It was very interesting to see how some of the cars were moving slower than others at times and still time with the story when needed. So I am curious if there are any pics or videos that show the ride layout of Pooh's Hunny Hunt to get a better idea of how the cars move on that ride.

    The Blackwing Diaries

  • Bob Clampett, 100 and counting

    13 May 2013 | 12:29 pm
I was just visiting one of the most important animation blogs on the 'net-Michael Barrier's, to catch up, and saw he'd done a lovely post marking the 100th birthday of Bob Clampett, on May 8th. Good grief, I missed it. Of course, every day is a good day to remember Clampett-that wonderful, nutty, brilliant and lovable cartoon genius.  Following is my Bob Clampett birthday post from 2006:I volunteered to work during the ASIFA annual cel sale in 1981; Bob Clampett happened to be there signing these preprinted drawings; his wife Sody was with him. I introduced myself, finally,…

Besides the food, want to know what I love about Epcot's Food and Wine Festival? Yes, the wine. But besides that? • Where are the 2014 Packages?

    Christina Wood
    15 May 2013 | 12:06 pm
I've been getting a lot of questions about 2014 packages, so I thought I would address it in a quick post. First, for those of you who are new to Disney, packages include a room and at least tickets; you can also add dining, but it's not required for a package.  Historically, we've been seeing packages come out in early June, usually three or four days after the ticket price increase is announced.  I would expect early June again this year just because Disney wants everyone using their "My Disney Experience" and linking their dining reservations to their rooms. To do that,…

Lightening and Sally welcome guests. When someone asks me about Art of Animation, I always say the same thing: It's the smartest thing Disney has ever done when it comes to resorts.  Three well-themed pools, suites that sleep six, and a fantastic food court make this a favorite with just about everyone who has the pleasure of staying there.  Let's talk about what Art of Animation has to offer.Room Types:Art of Animation falls into the "value" category of Disney resorts, but in name only. The Crystal Palace is a Winnie the Pooh and friends character buffet located just past Main Street U.S.A in the Magic Kingdom.  The restaurant is inspired by Victorian greenhouses of the late 1800s and brims with light, topiaries and tropical palms.  I was very surprised by how beautiful it was!  Despite being very busy, we were seated right away. Our server was very friendly and helpful.  In my opinion, he was one of our best servers from our trip.             The characters of The Crystal Palace were my favorite.  They were the most interactive and acted just as you…

  • Trip Report Update: Brunch at Makahiki + Touring a Model DVC Room

    Carrie
    13 May 2013 | 11:15 am
Get those eyeballs ready… today’s installment of Aulani to Walt Disney World is the first part of an exhaustive photo tour of Aulani! On our last full day in Hawaii, we blew off our plans to hit the Oahu sights we’d missed because we didn’t feel like we’d gotten to enjoy all our resort had to offer yet. We started the day with an invisible sunrise and breakfast at the resort’s other sit-down restaurant, Makahiki. Then we toured the model Disney Vacation Club villa like the one I was originally going to book for our trip. If you’re curious what a…
  • Fancy Cakes Now Available at Epcot!

    Carrie
    9 May 2013 | 9:30 am
If you’ve read any of my trip reports, you know I’m sort of obsessed with cake—specifically, with ordering cakes at Disney, to the point where I have an entire section of this site devoted to ordering cake at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Two of the most disappointing Disney cakes I’ve ever had came from Epcot, and I’ve been continually frustrated with their supermarket-level quality (and insistence on using blashphemous whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream). The work-around has been to order cakes from the Yacht & Beach Club’s pastry team,…
  • Trip Report Update: Aulani’s Starlit Hui

    Carrie
    6 May 2013 | 11:00 am
Today I finally wrap up the story of our vow renewal day at Aulani with our experience at the resort’s Starlit Hui, which is kind of like a luau with a stage show and pre-show crafts but no meal. After our dinner at ‘AMA ‘AMA, we met back up with the Roots for front-row seats at the event. If you’re wondering whether you can skip a real luau in favor of Aulani’s version, read on…
  • Trip Report Update: Laniwai Spa Day

    Carrie
    29 Apr 2013 | 10:15 am
At last we start to really get into the Aulani part of this Aulani to Walt Disney World trip report! After our vow renewal brunch, Patrick and I splashed around in Aulani’s pool a bit and then spent a few hours at the resort’s spa, Laniwai, determined to wring every last drop of value from the bazillions of dollars they charge. And also take a TON of photos. Then it was back to ‘AMA ‘AMA for dinner and a sunset before we hit up the resort’s Starlit Hui with the Roots. Read on!
  • Vow Renewal Brunch… with Cake!

    Carrie
    23 Apr 2013 | 11:00 am
After they’d shot Patrick and me standing in front of Hawaii from virtually every angle except upside down, the Roots took a break and we all changed clothes for our post-vow-renewal brunch at Aulani’s open-air restaurant, ‘AMA ‘AMA. This was the part I’d really been looking forward to because it was our first chance to spend quality time with our guests. Also, there was cake. And after, more photos!!! Read on…

Did you know that Disneyland Paris has a really keen '50s diner that pays tribute to Annette Funicello? Here's some great photos, thanks to Mouse Clubhouse friend Carla Bolonotto!Carla's favorite meal is the Eurochick sandwich. I was surprised at the name, thinking it was referring to a girl from Europe, although the slang term for women as "chicks" was more acceptable in the '50s, I was glad to know the "chick" refers to chicken! Of course! At Annette's there are U.S. classics such as the Rock n' Roll Burger and the All-American Hot Dog, and I don't know what entree I'd get but I'd certainly…

Flo’s V8 Cafe. Pretty good eats! So my wife and I along with my sister and her husband just returned from a six day stay at the Disneyland Resort. As always, we had a great time. My wife and I hadn’t been to Disneyland for almost two years so we had a lot to catch up on. And it all starts with Cars Land, a remarkable achievement by Disney Imagineers under the watchful eye of John Lasseter and his Pixar cohorts. Here’s my Cars Land story in a nutshell. We arrived late on a Sunday afternoon and stood transfixed as the place went from an amazing recreation of the town of…

  • Star Wars Angry Birds Toys – A Better Combo Than PB&J

    Dan
    14 May 2013 | 9:58 pm
There has been a galactic battle raging in our living room the past few days. Angry Birds have been flying through the air and destroying an AT-AT walker from Star Wars, much to the delight of my son. Yes, Angry Birds Star Wars toys have landed in our home. Like most people, we have spent too many hours playing Angry Birds on our phones. And like all the cool kids, the Star Wars films are some of our favorites (well, at least the original films are). So when we had the chance to play with Angry Birds toys with a Star Wars theme, it was a perfect match. Angry Birds Star Wars AT-AT Attack…
  • Fighting Childhood Hunger

    Dan
    14 May 2013 | 8:41 pm
I grew up in a lower income household where food was sometimes scarce. I lost count of the number of nights we ate Mac & Cheese because it was on sale. On special occasions, we would get hot dog slices mixed in. I try my best to provide for my family, and my son will likely never know what it is like to go to bed hungry. But for many children, hunger remains an issue and lunch at school is often the one real meal that they get each day. Our local food banks are often a safety net for families who would otherwise go without. The Oregon Food Bank has locations throughout the state and gives…
  • Tilapia Grilled in Corn Husks with Roasted Jalapeno-Lime Butter

    Dan
    3 May 2013 | 6:27 pm
With Cinco de Mayo this weekend, I was in the mood for something with a little bit of a kick. The tilapia with roasted jalapeno-lime butter dish is more of a Tex Mex item than something you’d find at a traditional Mexican restaurant. But it is a great tasting entree that your family will really enjoy. I cooked this dish on my propane grill, but you could use a charcoal grill as well. You don’t have to regulate the temperature of your grill very much when cooking this, so it is an easy one that pretty much anyone can make. Cooking the fish in the corn husks sort of steams it and…
  • Coffee and Writing, the Best Part of the Day

    Dan
    29 Apr 2013 | 12:15 am
When do you find time to write? After talking with a few other dad bloggers, it seems most of us do our best work late in the evening. Our days are filled with work and early evenings are spent with the family. But after everyone goes to bed, the house quiets down and it seems many of us find time to indulge in our hobby. Over the past month, I have struggled to find energy in the evening. The 50+ hour work weeks have taken their toll and, more often than not, I have been tempted to just fall asleep on the couch. My Keurig and I have become good friends, as a cup of coffee in the evening has…
  • There’s Nothing Like that New House Smell

    Dan
    24 Apr 2013 | 6:56 pm
There is something special about that new car smell. Sure, buying a used car can be grand if you are upgrading from a bucket of bolts. But given the opportunity, almost everyone I know would prefer to buy new and to be the first to put some miles on the new engine. The strange thing is that many people overlook the advantages of buying something new when purchasing a home. The romantic idea of sweat equity lures some into buying an existing home, but I have several friends who have lived with outdated wallpaper or shag carpeting for years simply because they never got around to the upgrades.

  • Free Disney Dining Plan – Is it a good choice for teens?

    admin
    13 May 2013 | 5:28 pm
Free stuff is great, right? I mean if Disney offered you a FREE Dining Plan, you’d think that was a pretty darn awesome deal.  Right? Well, things are not always what they seem. Last week, Walt Disney World announced its Free Dining Plan promotion for the rest of 2013. Basically, if you purchase a non-discounted (read: rack rate) Disney resort and ticket package, you’ll get a Disney Dining Plan FREE. Is this a good deal? The short answer is…maybe.  But for families with teens, the answer is usually “no.” Here’s the scoop: Teens are considered adults when…
