I’ve been visiting Walt Disney World Resort for more than 30 years. I’ve spent more than half of that time working (or playing as I like to say) as a Disney cast member. I’m often asked by friends and family to help with planning vacations to Disney Parks. One topic that regularly comes up during conversations is around merchandise – What are the must-have items I should get during my visit? To help answer that question, I visited Magic Kingdom Park to highlight some of my favorite merchandise items in this short video. The good news is that you can find many of the items I mentioned…

This has led many to speculate that Disney does not want to spend to add SotMK elements only to have to remove them for a giant upgrade to the land that may be in the planning stages right now. The new Disney parks leadership (aka Tom Staggs) and Walt Disney Imagineering agree that Tomorrowland at both the Magic Kingdom and at Disneyland is in great need of help. Welcome back to Big Thunder Mountain! Today I begin with a "never knew that" about one of the props in the line queue. I was told that this train was used in the 1978 Disney movie "Hot Lead & Cold Feet," starring Don Knotts. But enough about that…let's board our Mine Train! As others have commented, the attraction does look spic-and-span brand new. I am sure it won't take long for the wear and tear to appear, which will give it the authentic looking patina that is necessary. It took a few hours for the attraction to open, as it appears there are still some technical glitches that need to be…

After traveling home from New Orleans yesterday, I was not able to post...so you are in luck today with a two for posting. First up are two more images from Universal Studios on April 20, 1980. First up is a view of their old west street with the Sherrif's office, dental office and General Store in the background. The next image is of poor Bruce from Jaws sitting on a trailer. Continuing the Universal Studios theme is this item for souvenir Friday, a Castle Dracula snow globe. In a great bottle shape, the Universal Monsters frolic at Dracula's Castle. See if you can name all the creatures…

Two nice images from a visit to Universal Studios on April 20, 1980. The images feature the main attraction at Universal, the Glamor Trams. First up is a shot of two trams in the New York section of the ride. I am sure the tram tour guides are describing the New York set and how movie and television sets are constructed. The next view is one of my favorite views with the Glamor Tram with Frankenstein. I believe this is at the load station.

Two nice images of Universal Studios on April 20, 1980. First is the poor tourist locked into a set of Colonial stocks. I like the Universal Studios signboard on the stocks. Note the bare feet. Next up is a nice shot of a the display seen along the route of the Glamor Trams...A Cylon and vehicle from Battlestar Galactica. This was seen in front of the Battle of Galactica where guests would be deposited in the middle of an epic laser beam battle. The attraction was open 1979 to 1992.

Next up is a view the front entrance of the Communications building with the statue titled Speed in the courtyard.

The Saxophone Quartet (dressed as Keystone Cops) has stopped by to play a tune or three. On this particular day they were experimenting with an all-sax version of Wagner's "Ring Cycle". (It's nice to see the Silhouette Studio next door). That dad is checking out his son's reaction; the kid seems to be digging it! He will grow up to be… Kenny…
  • Knott's Ghost Town

    17 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
Hey. I love vintage Knott's photos as much as the next guy. Maybe even more. But aye caramba! These dark, gray, murky photos of the Ghost Town, while OK, feel kind of oppressive. Like a layer of volcanic ash has settled over everything. I hate when that happens! Somebody needs to use a light meter (hint: it's not me). That guy to the left has a brightly patterned (Hawaiian?) shirt, but it does little to cut through the gloom.  The blacksmith's shop is to our right, when I was a kid there used to be an actual blacksmith in there banging away on white hot iron rods, making horseshoes.
  • Special Guest Photos

    16 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
Yo yo yo! Today I have four more photos, generously shared with us by Chuck Hansen. These are from a 1995 trip to Disneyland (see some previous images from that day HERE and HERE).As usual, I will be using Chuck's own words to accompany the photos, since he did a better job than I ever could: "The first two are of that big steel-and-concrete structure built to protect Holiday Hill from further erosion. The first is a bit overexposed and slightly soft. I've included it for the view of the climbers on top but won't be disappointed if it doesn't make the cut". It made the cut, Chuck!"The second…
  • Skyway revisited

    15 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
It's that time again… time for some more repeats! Today I wanted to feature the Skyway in some form or other. At first I thought I would shoot a video of my interpretive Skyway dance, but realized that it would take too much bandwidth. So you'll have to make do with these photos. This one was originally posted way back in 2008 (though the photo is from 1962), and is a beautiful view of the Fantasyland Skyway Chalet. The fanciful Swiss cuckoo clock architecture is so appealing, it seems a real shame that this couldn't have been repurposed; at the very least it could have been a nice…
  • Main Street, August 1960

    14 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
I am hoping to make your Monday nicer by posting today's lovely photos of Main Street USA, circa 1960. Let's start with this image that is different from anything else I have, which makes it pretty special! We're looking at Main Street Station above some beautiful rose bushes. It hardly feels like an amusement park at all. Notice the sign for the new "Nature's Wonderland" over to our left. And here's a nice shot of Main Street, looking beautiful and vibrant (but not too vibrant!). I've always loved the color choices that were made for the various buildings back in those days. A…

  • Question Keeping A Wig On During Rides

    DL Lover in LA
    18 Apr 2014 | 8:34 pm
Anyone with any experience riding the rides while wearing a wig? My mom just finished her breast cancer treatments and she and I are going to celebrate at Disneyland in a week. She still wears a wig since her hair has been growing slowly since chemo. I know she isn't too worried about most rides, but I think Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and California Screamin' are the ones she's worried about. My mom loves the rides so I don't think she'll want to skip them. I told her to maybe tie a scarf around her head and wig to keep it on or maybe to ride those rides bald. Anyone lose…

I've been through the entire casting process, and offered honestly the BEST job I could have asked for, but due to unfortunate circumstances I'm unable to get situated in Orlando in enough time. I was put on the wait-list for bartender, which delayed moving from South Florida to Orlando a bit and the house we were looking into fell through. I was also under the impression that the wait-list was going to take much longer (I got a call back in less than a month) and that I would have had enough time to reevaluate moving. I'm under a lot of pressure to move my life in two weeks now as I am…

I make it no secret that I am not a fan of animal movies. That’s not to say I don’t love movies with animals or nature in them, rather, I am not a fan of watching the “circle of life” in action. I can barely handle eliminating the errant spider that may enter my abode, much less watch a fierce lion take down a gazelle or a chimpanzee mom abandon her  baby (no clue if that’s a plot line of Chimpanzee, I still never saw it!). My tender heart just can’t take that much pulling on its strings. Call me a softy, call me a dreamer that can’t handle reality,…

Over the weekend, I saw a friend on instagram post a photo of a new Muppets Most Wanted-themed scavenger hunt taking place around Epcot’s World Showcase. I grabbed the family and headed over to check it out, because if there’s one thing I love, it’s scavenger hunts, and the Muppets. Oh wait, that’s two things. We entered through the International Gateway to World Showcase, so I…

It might sound funny to highlight a post about Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival by mentioning food, but trust me, the new food booths are the best thing to hit Flower and Garden since, well, since flowers.  Disney started small last year, with just a few food booths, but they've added more this year. Now almost every pavilion has something to offer. Here are a few items you'll find.Frushi from Japan.Frushi, basically fruit sushi, was a big surprise, a delightfully refreshing option with a subtle taste.  A homemade fruit roll takes the place of seaweed, with coconut infused,…

If it seems like there's a change to Fastpass+ every day, you're right. This $1.5 system is huge and it's changing how you tour the parks.  The  newest twist according to the rumor mill? Starting March 31st, offsite guests (also known as "day guests" in Disney speak) will be allowed to make their Fastpass+ selections online up to 30 days in advance, a change from having to make them in the park the day of their visit. This means shorter lines at the Fastpass+ kiosks in the parks, as well as the ability to do more precise planning. Currently, annual pass holders staying offsite are…

    Christina Wood
    25 Mar 2014 | 5:00 am
The Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge opened last fall in Hollywood Studios and since then, it's become a popular location to meet up for drinks and snacks. Located right outside the restaurant, the lounge is a cozy spot with just about a dozen tables.  At present, you can't make dining reservations for this location, but it's open all day so if it's crowded when you get there, go on a ride or take in a show and then try again later.  Kids are welcome, of course, but the menu is very grown-up and drinks are served. It's more of a "bar" than a restaurant, so little ones might be bored. We…

I just had to share this photo of my son at the Tower of Terror in Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Our family wanted to ride the thrill attraction, but my youngest son didn't want to, so I suggested he walk through the queue with us, and when we got to the ride, the two of us would just exit while the rest went on. The cast member began escorting us to the exit but asked my son, "Would you like to surprise your family?" He put this "junior cast member" costume on him, and at the end of the ride, when the doors would open, it was this little honorary attractions host that was…

When was the last time that you built something with your child? Work has kept me away from home a lot recently. Because of this, weekends have become a special for me and my son to spend time together. We usually go to a local events or play together with his toys. But this weekend I wanted to try something different and stopped by Radio Shack to get a kit to build something fun. Building your own electronics is the modern equivalent to working on your own car. • Hauling Mud and Rocks with the Toy State Big Rev-Up Dump Truck

    Dan
    8 Apr 2014 | 12:39 am
As a kid, there was nothing more fun than to play in the mud. I ruined countless shirts and pants with dirt and grime. I captured bugs. I tried to dig a hole to China. I left gaping mud pits in the backyard that my dad had to fill in. It was messy adventure, but digging in the backyard was a special kind of fun. One of the best ways to haul mud, dirt, and rocks is with a giant dump truck. The Toy State Big Rev-Up Dump Truck is about as big as it gets. The truck towers over my son’s other CAT toys and the large truck bed is big enough to carry monster sized loads of dirt. The truck bed…

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Clorox. As a parent, we often have to deal with more than our share of icky moments. Dirty bottoms, smelly clothes, sticky floors, and undetermined mud piles (I think that was mud) are a regular part of the week. Having two golden retrievers adds another layer of ick, as fur balls, regurgitated chew toys, and other unimaginable filth try to take over my home. When I heard that Clorox was looking for dads who could share an icky moment, I had just the story to tell. Out of all the messes I have had to deal with, nothing compares to the…

Source: Disney Parks Blog Following in the footsteps of the wildly popular Wishes Dessert Party at the Tomorrowland Terrace in Magic Kingdom, Disney announced the Illuminations Sparkling Dessert Party at Epcot. Why is this a big deal? Well, Illuminations Dessert Parties have been popular with large groups to get together for bits and bevs on one of the waterfront patios around the World Showcase.  But the pricing minimums make it hard for individuals or even individual families to have this experience. This new event makes that possible. It’s still kind of pricey. $49 for adults (ages…

Frozen’s Anna and Elsa are moving to Fairy Tale Hall in Magic Kingdom starting April 20. The even better news is that they will part of FastPass+ Character Experiences through My Disney Experience. So the opportunity to see Disney’s newest princesses using FP+ is such a time saver. As of March 14, you can see that they are loaded in to MDE:   This is a screenshot from May 3, 2014 at Magic Kingdom.

The fragrant lavender comes from Ali’i Kula lavender farms in Maui, and the kitchen also is sourcing local honeycomb for the semifreddo, a “semi-frozen” dessert.
