    10 Aug 2014 | 10:39 pm
Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

  • Marvel Movies Get An Emotional Fan Tribute

    John Frost
    29 Aug 2014 | 1:55 am
Disney has lucked out with both the quality and box office success of movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They are, for the most part, full of action and witty dialogue, and just plain fun. But there is also a darker more subtle side to most of the films. Those moments are what artist Gen Kim has tried to capture in his latest video. The music is José González’s “Stay Alive” and the clips are all devoid of dialogue, which means the emotions the actors convey with their faces and body language are all emphasized. Kim spent roughly 65 hours and went through 13…

Chewie had no comment, but was heard to chuckle a bit. Solo can outfly any ship, but his ship has been known to fall apart from time to time. With some help from force healers, Solo is on the mend and reportedly already back at work chasing princesses or whatever he does these days. The unfortunately very real injury to Harrison Ford took place on set in June when the door of the spacehip fell and broke his leg. There was…

    29 Aug 2014 | 12:02 am
Pixar’s next animated short “Lava” is inspired by the beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes. This very charming first clip from the short features a small portion of a musical love story that will take place over millions of years. It’s not a lot of the film, but this glimpse is still great. The clouds there and the galaxy spinning in the sky is fantastic. “Lava” is directed by James Ford Murphy and produced by Andrea Warren. It will open in 2015 in front “Inside Out.” What do you think so far? A charming first clip from…

No one can be THAT old for Disney Land. Even Juju wasn’t with us in this trip, we couldn’t help ourselves but check California Adventure. We visited DisneyLand in Hong Kong last year and it was really cool and small. So in this trip, we were kinda confused, which park to visit, it wasn’t worth visiting both of them, so we decided to hit the California Adventure. We got the tickets from our hotel. Yes, we were staying in Anaheim, and our hotel was 5 minutes away by car from the park. We took the bus because we didn’t want to waste our time searching for a park space.

By James Rao: ICYMI: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4Our second full day at Cedar Point is in the books. We took it slow today knowing it was our last day of coaster fun for this trip, and also knowing the kids were pretty wiped out from repeated rides on Top Thrill Dragster the previous night. Still, we arrived at the park early and met James Koehl and his son Anton for some Early Ride Time on Millennium Force. In hindsight, we probably should have entered the park through a different entrance, but the Soak City lot was familiar and easy. Besides, we were in no real rush as our goal was…

By James Rao: ICYMI: Part One, Part Two, Part ThreeWe stopped at a counter service restaurant called Lakeside Express, which is near Gatekeeper and MaxAir (we did not ride MaxAir since Delirium at Kings Island appeared to be the same exact ride and we had other priorities on this visit). I chose this restaurant because they serve a perch sandwich and perch is a fish common to the area (so Jim told me, anyway). Again, it was my attempt to try the local flavors. Well, after spending about $80 on lunch, it turned out to be a bit of a choke. While perch is a mild white fish, and in this sandwich…

    28 Aug 2014 | 9:15 pm
By James Rao: ICYMI: Part One and Part Two.We are in Sandusky at a Fairfield Inn about six miles from Cedar Point – the Roller Coast! The room is nice, but much smaller than the Comfort Suites near Kings Island. Gonna be a bit cramped, but we’ll be fine. The pool is nicer, but there is no whirlpool, and the exercise room is small, really a one or two person closet to be honest. We likely will not be using the pool much as The Point is open until 10 PM the next couple of days, and there is a special Platinum Pass Holder night time ride event on Gatekeeper after park closing on August 13th.

Those of you who visited Disneyland's Main Street Cinema back when it showed silent movies may have caught a glimpse of the latin lover in one of his movies, such as "The Sheik," "The Eagle," or his final film, "The Son of the Sheik."Here he is with costar Vilma Banky in "Son of the Sheik."His smoldering eyes made women go bananas. Two more images from the same film:Valentino's untimely death from peritonitis, due to a botched appendectomy, prevented him from…

A great piece of sample merchandise is this early New Orleans Square coffee cup. The cup has a label on the inside for the Sanko Tsusho Company of Nagoya Japan.

    28 Aug 2014 | 7:20 am
A set of three snapshots from December 1959. The snapshots are all mounted on one page in the posted order. First up is a nice overhead view of Alice In Wonderland with several caterpillars out on the track. In the background is Fantasyland prior to the addition of skull rock. A quick stop for a portrait shot in front of the Main Street Cinema with the glory of Main Street decorated for Christmas in the background. The Cigar Store Indian looks especially proud in this image. Note the sandwich board advertising some silent film starring comedian Mack Swain. Last image is from the Skyway again…

Last week I posted several photographs of characters at Disneyland. Here is another set, some with rather interesting poses for the characters. First up is the Alice in Wonderland characters interacting with guests. The Alice is very engaged with the guests while the Walrus and Mad Hatter are looking for other guests. Next up is the Mouse that started it all, and he is surrounded by adoring fans. Be sure to note the Santa Fe Disneyland conductor coming in to work. Also in the background one of the guests is wearing a neat souvenir hat. The final image is an interesting pose with the backside…

Two views of early Frontierland. First up is the newly constructed Fort Wilderness up on the hill overlooking the Rivers of America. I wonder what happened to the gate sign? I believe the new version of the Fort has a different sign. The next view is of the friendly Indian village. Note the 1890s telephone and power lines in the background. Also notice how close the railroad tracks run to the village.

It is interesting that a guest is out on the dock close to the Mark Twain. The photograph shows a nice view of the workings of the Mark Twain. Next up is a view of one of the jungle launches arriving back from the perilous three month tour of the jungle. The launch is fully loaded with guests. Oh how I miss the striped canopies.

So in that respect this is a little bit interesting.I understand why that trough is carrying water to the waterwheel (to keep away vampires). But why is that side-trough allowing water to spill out of the side? Just for looks? Would it have controlled the amount of water so…

Welcome to Storyland, in lovely Glen, New Hampshire (surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest)! Storyland opened in 1954; this charming little park started out with a single ride - an old fire truck! But owners Bob and Ruth Morrell collected dolls based on German storybook characters, and these dolls inspired Bob and Ruth to add tableaus populated by characters from various fairytales, fables, and "Mother Goose" stories. There's Humpty Dumpty. (It was the music that really sold it). This first photo is not an especially rare view, but (to me) it is still awesome. I have made no secret of the fact that T-land is my favorite, and while I grew up with the 1967-ish version, my fascination with the pre-67 version seems to be just about endless. So… this photo from the Hub looking toward the entrance makes me feel as if I could almost walk forward, cross the…

What the hell, the sun is still up, why are we leaving so early?? Well, I have the feeling that our photographer was just arriving, and happened to take this picture as he/she walked toward the entrance. The multicolored pennants are a nice touch, as are the attraction posters (as always). If you look just to the left of the guy sitting on the stool, you can see the black light that could see the…

Let's band together and start a new tradition. The next time you visit Disneyland, stop by City Hall on your way out (or in) and submit a cast member compliment. It could be for anything, large or small, even just a smile, those compliments go a long way and they're taken quite seriously by management. As employees are apparently on a points system of some sort (an actual cast member can tell us more), I've heard that management reviews these submissions and several compliments can somewhat overrule a negative. They only take five minutes to submit. I have been doing this for several years,…

Good Evening Everyone, I'm quite new to this forum and must admit I am here to seek out the best birthday present I could ever imagine for my wife. She and I have been going to Disneyland together for nearly a decade, but we've been going to Disney parks separately for all of our lives (me, Disney World (I'm from the east coast); her, Disneyland (she's from the west coast)). • Top 5 Ways to Welcome Fall in Walt Disney World

    Suzannah Mitchell
    14 Aug 2014 | 8:09 am
I know, I know, it’s still summer – it’s still hot – (over 100 here at Walt Disney World!) but I find myself drifting to thoughts of cool autumn breezes, falling leaves, and pumpkins…Okay, maybe some of those things don’t exactly happen here in Florida, but a girl can dream. Believe it or not, “Orlando Halloween” is right around the corner (that’s what we locals call it when Halloween descends upon the area in early August while we’re all sweating in the sun) and that means lots of fun options to get in the Fall spirit. And while I…

Spotted in Disneyland by Disney fan Jill L and shared by the fabulous DizThruBrownEyes (which you should all visit/follow/show some love) – this new bag appears to showcase all the original cartoon-style faces of Disney characters. It is one of the nylon style of bags and the large tote-looking style sells for $268. Wonder if more bag styles will appear and if we’ll get them over here in Walt Disney World soon! Until then, enjoy this sneak peek and thank you again to Jill and Elantrice for letting me share this photo here! I have no idea what the actual name of this print is, but…

For each Pixar feature, his mission has been to create a visually exciting, believable world with appealing…
  • Make Holiday Plans Now for Gaylord Palms ICE! and More

    Suzannah Mitchell
    6 Aug 2014 | 9:21 am
After my recent visit a little further north of the hot Florida sun, the cooler weather got me thinking about the holiday season, so I was thrilled when this announcement about the Gaylord Palms ICE! theme and other Christmas events came through. This year, ICE! will feature The Nutcracker, one of my favorite holiday tales and one with a personal connection – my mother (a former professional ballerina) played the Sugar Plum Fairy for the Boston Ballet many years ago and it’s always been a family tradition to watch or experience The Nutcracker somehow each year. I think The…
  • Imagination By The Cup – Disney And Joffrey Flavors At Home

Now this is the kind of partnership I love. Disney and coffee. Joffrey’s Coffee, which has had a presence at Walt Disney World since 1995 and is now served at many locations on both coasts, is now creating specialty coffee blends based on signature Disney parks and resorts restaurants. But more than just the coffee blends, which I’ll speak about in a moment, I love that Joffrey’s has taken the time and effort to create really unique and fun labels for the different coffee types. There are great descriptions for each type, showing they really know the restaurants they are…

If you love Disney as much as I do, you’ll be well acquainted with the emptiness that one might experience when there is a lack of Disney magic in one’s everyday life and the Walt Disney World® parks are over 1,000 miles away. You have no idea when your next visit will be and there’s no new masterpiece of a Disney film to look forward to in the immediate future. What is a Disnerd to do in hard times like these? If marathon-ing all of your favorite Disney movies just isn’t doing the trick this time, the next best thing to being at one of the parks (as I have recently discovered) is to…

Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life   This column is typically about finding those little glimpses of Disney magic in daily routines. For four weeks, though, we’re taking the phrase “Finding Disney” and turning it on its head by asking this question: How do you find Disney when you’re in Disney? Everything experienced on Walt Disney World property has ties to Disney in some way, obviously, but some attractions, atmospheres, and elements permeate with a deeper sense of embodiment for what the Disney name truly means to all of us. Today we’re exploring Disney’s Animal…

Everything experienced on Walt Disney World property has ties to Disney in some way, obviously, but some attractions, atmospheres, and elements permeate with a deeper sense of embodiment for what the Disney name truly means to all of us. Today we’re exploring Disney’s Animal…

The price for the base menu at Victoria and Albert’s is $135 per person.  You can add extras to that very…

Walt Disney was born in Chicago on December 5, 1901 inside of a house that his father built and his mother designed. This small Chicago house was turned into an apartment complex and was all but forgotten. That is, until the founders of the Walt Disney Birthplace Project purchased the house with the intent to restore it to its original hand crafted glory. Today on the show we are joined by Dusty Sage, CEO of MiceChat.com, who is also the executive director of the Walt Disney Birthplace Project. Dusty tells us all about the efforts to raise funds for the house, reviving an antique soda…

Disneyland is experimenting with allowing guests to send their on-ride photo to their smart device. This new system is being tested at California Screamin’ in Disney California Adventure and Splash Mountain in Disneyland. I first saw the new product after I rode California Screamin’ on Monday morning. The cost of the service is $4.99, but message and data rates apply when sending the photo to your mobile device. The test…

It felt odd when I realized everything I owned could fit inside a giant moving truck. It felt even more bizarre to see the truck drive away. After months of planning, we loaded the dogs into the car, locked the front door one last time, and set the GPS on our T-Mobile 4G tablet to our new address in Seattle. Moving to a new state was bittersweet. There is excitement about the new job and our new home. There is also a lot we will miss from our little farming town in Oregon. The job opportunities were limited in Oregon, but it was pretty neat to have farmers as neighbors. We always had fresh…

    8 Aug 2014 | 10:35 pm
We have a lot of firsts coming up. My son is entering first grade. This will be his first time in public school. And this will be the first time he won’t be in the same school where my wife teaches. Our family will be experiencing a lot of new things as we move from Oregon to Washington and change always comes with its share of uncertainty. The after school pick up seems to be the biggest source of worry. While I can rationally remind myself of the countless times I made it from the classroom to the school bus as a child, it doesn’t do much to lessen my overprotective tendencies as a…
  • Camelbaks Can Help You Beat the Heat and Save Money at Disneyland

    Dan
    4 Aug 2014 | 11:08 pm
During a recent visit to Disneyland, we noticed that several families were wearing Camelbaks, the water filled backpacks that are often popular with hikers and bicyclists. At first, the idea of bringing a Camelbak seemed excessive. Does anyone really need (or want to) carry that much water with them at Disneyland? But as the day wore on and the temperature continued to rise, I couldn’t help but think that this was a brilliant idea. From a cost perspective, you would be amazed at how much you can spend on drinks during a hot day. When we got home, we added up the cost of buying drinks…

What is the biggest adventure you have ever taken with your children? A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…

If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…
