But this is a really great time for them to focus on a new concept in that space and I can…

Just to review, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was Inspired by the 1937 Disney animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” – but unlike Magic Kingdom Park’s original Snow White’s Scary Adventures attraction, this new experience tells the tale from the dwarfs’ perspective. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a family coaster with a ‘38-inch height requirement, and will be the final attraction to debut in New…

One key lesson I learned from longtime Imagineer Kevin Rafferty is to consider how the guest experiences an attraction. Are the events taking place happening to them? Around them? Or are they invisible passerby, moving traverse to the universe they explore? With this question in mind, and piecing together both formal and informal elements of the queue and ride adventure, I argue the Disneyland attraction Splash Mountain is in fact a metafictional take on this structure, and is instead the emotions and intensity of hearing Uncle Remus’s stories, experienced from Johnny’s…

With the DVC addition to the Polynesian well underway, Walt Disney World is rapidly coming to the point where there may be no DVC hotel project for the first time in years. We can assume Disney won't let that happen. That is leading to rumors of where the next DVC tower will be built.Right now, the most surprising location being talked about is inside EPCOT's World Showcase. One of the key observations that has been made about the new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive game is that every land except Tomorrowland has a tie-in to the game. This has led many to speculate that Disney does not want to spend to add SotMK elements only to have to remove them for a giant upgrade to the land that may be in the planning stages right now. Two nice images from a visit to Universal Studios on April 20, 1980. The images feature the main attraction at Universal, the Glamor Trams. First up is a shot of two trams in the New York section of the ride. I am sure the tram tour guides are describing the New York set and how movie and television sets are constructed. Hey. I love vintage Knott's photos as much as the next guy. Maybe even more. But aye caramba! These dark, gray, murky photos of the Ghost Town, while OK, feel kind of oppressive. Like a layer of volcanic ash has settled over everything. I hate when that happens! Somebody needs to use a light meter (hint: it's not me). That guy to the left has a brightly patterned (Hawaiian?) shirt, but it does little to cut through the gloom.  The blacksmith's shop is to our right, when I was a kid there used to be an actual blacksmith in there banging away on white hot iron rods, making horseshoes.

These are from a 1995 trip to Disneyland (see some previous images from that day HERE and HERE).As usual, I will be using Chuck's own words to accompany the photos, since he did a better job than I ever could: "The first two are of that big steel-and-concrete structure built to protect Holiday Hill from further erosion. The first is a bit overexposed and slightly soft. I've included it for the view of the climbers on top but won't be disappointed if it doesn't make the cut". It made the cut, Chuck!"The second…
  • Skyway revisited

    15 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
It's that time again… time for some more repeats! Today I wanted to feature the Skyway in some form or other. At first I thought I would shoot a video of my interpretive Skyway dance, but realized that it would take too much bandwidth. So you'll have to make do with these photos. This one was originally posted way back in 2008 (though the photo is from 1962), and is a beautiful view of the Fantasyland Skyway Chalet. The fanciful Swiss cuckoo clock architecture is so appealing, it seems a real shame that this couldn't have been repurposed; at the very least it could have been a nice…
  • Main Street, August 1960

    14 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
I am hoping to make your Monday nicer by posting today's lovely photos of Main Street USA, circa 1960. Let's start with this image that is different from anything else I have, which makes it pretty special! We're looking at Main Street Station above some beautiful rose bushes. It hardly feels like an amusement park at all. Notice the sign for the new "Nature's Wonderland" over to our left. And here's a nice shot of Main Street, looking beautiful and vibrant (but not too vibrant!). I've always loved the color choices that were made for the various buildings back in those days. A…
  • Walt Dizzy World, November 1980

    13 Apr 2014 | 12:01 am
Whew, I am still trying to get through the boring slides from a lot of 1980 Disney World views. SO… I am sharing eight of them today, in order to get inside the Magic Kingdom for the next post.First up… the Monorail and the Contemporary Resort. Somehow in my mind I  think of the A-frame structure as being taller and narrower and more A-shaped. Still, there is something about it that I love. There's the Contemporary again, across Bay Lake. Space Mountain is the only other notable structure visible. A lone sailboat glides across the lake, just like the ones you saw in all of those old…

This is going to sound incredibly greedy... but; The Golden Horseshoe used to serve this ENORMOUS piece of chocolate cake, and it was pretty good! We were there last Christmas, and it doesn't seem to be on the menu anymore... Anybody know if they have moved it to another restaurant? (the Jolly Holiday seems obvious, but it's not there either)

    31 Mar 2014 | 3:56 pm
I first heard about The Pirate Fairy at Disney’s D23 Expo back in August, and was treated to an appearance by stars Tom Hiddleston and Christina Hendricks. I really liked the premise, and looked forward to seeing it. So I was very excited to receive this dvd/BluRay to review. It did not let me down, and my family and I loved this film, perhaps best of all the Disney Fairy movies. The backstory is really interesting, and we learn about a Dust Keeper, Zarina (Christina Hendricks), who is always looking for new ways of using pixie dust and figuring out how to harness its power.

It might sound funny to highlight a post about Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival by mentioning food, but trust me, the new food booths are the best thing to hit Flower and Garden since, well, since flowers.  Disney started small last year, with just a few food booths, but they've added more this year. Now almost every pavilion has something to offer. Here are a few items you'll find.Frushi from Japan.Frushi, basically fruit sushi, was a big surprise, a delightfully refreshing option with a subtle taste.  A homemade fruit roll takes the place of seaweed, with coconut infused,…

If it seems like there's a change to Fastpass+ every day, you're right. This $1.5 system is huge and it's changing how you tour the parks.  The  newest twist according to the rumor mill? Starting March 31st, offsite guests (also known as "day guests" in Disney speak) will be allowed to make their Fastpass+ selections online up to 30 days in advance, a change from having to make them in the park the day of their visit. This means shorter lines at the Fastpass+ kiosks in the parks, as well as the ability to do more precise planning. Currently, annual pass holders staying offsite are…

    25 Mar 2014 | 5:00 am
The Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge opened last fall in Hollywood Studios and since then, it's become a popular location to meet up for drinks and snacks. Located right outside the restaurant, the lounge is a cozy spot with just about a dozen tables.  At present, you can't make dining reservations for this location, but it's open all day so if it's crowded when you get there, go on a ride or take in a show and then try again later.  Kids are welcome, of course, but the menu is very grown-up and drinks are served. It's more of a "bar" than a restaurant, so little ones might be bored. We…

    16 Apr 2014 | 6:30 pm
Our last vacation to Disneyland Resort marked what I thought was going to be a sad beginning… our oldest daughter was making her first trip as a “tween.” My daughter was losing interest in the princesses, was too big to wear their dress, and she was overall looking more forward to the big rides than the magic of Disney. To my chagrin, I was very wrong. It was the beginning of a new age of fun to have with my kids. These are some fun things to do, other than rides, to enjoy with your tween. By Fred Hazelton Anytime statisticians see a spike like the one we see on this week’s crowd report, they first break out in hives, then catch their breaths and look for an explanation of the outlier. The number one most common reason that our predictions miss the mark is weather. Unexpected good weather and bad weather can affect what we see in the parks, and we think that is what happened last week. On Tuesday, Central Florida experienced a severe weather warning from around noon until early evening. Then on Wednesday resort guests, off-site guests, and locals who were well-rested from…

She had such amazing stories of being involved in the creation of Disneyland and of Walt Disney himself. When we'd talk on the phone, I inevitably had to grab my voice recorder! In this excerpt from one of our conversations, Harriet talks about the plans for Disneyland's Chinatown and Confuscious. Although Walt decided to scrap the Chinatown idea, this photo is from a 1960 Disneyland souvenir book, which pictured some upcoming projects.

I just had to share this photo of my son at the Tower of Terror in Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Our family wanted to ride the thrill attraction, but my youngest son didn't want to, so I suggested he walk through the queue with us, and when we got to the ride, the two of us would just exit while the rest went on. The cast member began escorting us to the exit but asked my son, "Would you like to surprise your family?" He put this "junior cast member" costume on him, and at the end of the ride, when the doors would open, it was this little honorary attractions host that was…

When was the last time that you built something with your child? Work has kept me away from home a lot recently. Because of this, weekends have become a special for me and my son to spend time together. We usually go to a local events or play together with his toys. But this weekend I wanted to try something different and stopped by Radio Shack to get a kit to build something fun. Building your own electronics is the modern equivalent to working on your own car. • Hauling Mud and Rocks with the Toy State Big Rev-Up Dump Truck

    Dan
    8 Apr 2014 | 12:39 am
As a kid, there was nothing more fun than to play in the mud. I ruined countless shirts and pants with dirt and grime. I captured bugs. I tried to dig a hole to China. I left gaping mud pits in the backyard that my dad had to fill in. It was messy adventure, but digging in the backyard was a special kind of fun. One of the best ways to haul mud, dirt, and rocks is with a giant dump truck. The Toy State Big Rev-Up Dump Truck is about as big as it gets. The truck towers over my son’s other CAT toys and the large truck bed is big enough to carry monster sized loads of dirt. The truck bed…

Dirty bottoms, smelly clothes, sticky floors, and undetermined mud piles (I think that was mud) are a regular part of the week. Having two golden retrievers adds another layer of ick, as fur balls, regurgitated chew toys, and other unimaginable filth try to take over my home. When I heard that Clorox was looking for dads who could share an icky moment, I had just the story to tell. Out of all the messes I have had to deal with, nothing compares to the…

Source: Disney Parks Blog Following in the footsteps of the wildly popular Wishes Dessert Party at the Tomorrowland Terrace in Magic Kingdom, Disney announced the Illuminations Sparkling Dessert Party at Epcot. Why is this a big deal? Well, Illuminations Dessert Parties have been popular with large groups to get together for bits and bevs on one of the waterfront patios around the World Showcase.  But the pricing minimums make it hard for individuals or even individual families to have this experience. This new event makes that possible. It’s still kind of pricey. $49 for adults (ages…

Frozen’s Anna and Elsa are moving to Fairy Tale Hall in Magic Kingdom starting April 20. The even better news is that they will part of FastPass+ Character Experiences through My Disney Experience. So the opportunity to see Disney’s newest princesses using FP+ is such a time saver. As of March 14, you can see that they are loaded in to MDE:   This is a screenshot from May 3, 2014 at Magic Kingdom.

There were several options presented:         Who in their right mind would not want 7 or more selections?       Above are all the options that were being talked about.  I like the last one!
