• Facebook • Twitter • Google Plus • Pinterest A few weeks ago, I posted an article aimed at those of you travelers looking to plan your first ever Disney World trip. I covered three very important topics… requirements, when and how long, and tickets. In this second part I am going to go over transportation, accommodations, and the ever important itinerary. Accommodations I am pretty sure that almost anyone that looks at a list of possible accommodations in the Orlando area will be totally overwhelmed. There are so many options! Off property, on property, vacation homes,…

Rumored Club 33 Expansion Could Include Jazz Club Concept
Disney DoseDisney Dose21 May 2013 | 9:16 pmClub 33 is a private club in New Orleans Square in Disneyland that is NOT open to the public. I can’t get anyone reservations as much as I would love to. Walt Disney once said, “Disneyland will never be finished.” This continues to hold true today. During my recent first trip to the one and only Club 33, I heard rumors from members floating through the air that a possible expansion of the Club would be taking place over the next six months and would open by the beginning of 2014. Club 33 Expansion Details Included in this rumored expansion is the addition of a new area of… -

Disney Resort Icons Inspire New Merchandise Arriving This Summer at Disney Parks
22 May 2013 | 9:34 amI love staying at a Disney Resort hotel. I’ve stayed at nearly all of them in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts. The first Disney hotel my family stayed at was Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in summer 1992. There is something magical about staying at a Disney Resort (I love that blast of cool air when entering a hotel lobby). My favorite place is Disney’s Polynesian Resort as I like pretending I’m on a tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific (and they have a Dole Whip machine!). New merchandise featuring a few favorite Disney Resort hotels is arriving this… -

Should I Rent a Car?
21 May 2013 | 11:31 pmOne question I get a lot is “Should I rent a car when I visit Walt Disney World?” If you’re not staying on property, the answer is pretty simple: Yes. There are no resorts within convenient walking distance of Walt Disney World, even the Downtown Disney resorts, and most resort shuttles are so inconvenient they’ll wreak havoc on your schedule. If you’re staying on property however, the answer is a little bit trickier. First, no one staying on Disney property needs to rent a car since Magical Express, Disney’s free shuttle service that runs between… -

I apologize for the sound distortion during parts of it. I’ll have to figure out how to reduce the bass when recording from right in front of the stage. However, when we arrived there were no buses and we had to talk to a police officer to ask for the schedule. What surprised us? Hong Kong 2013: A Day at Disney
17 May 2013 | 11:44 pmSleeping Beauty’s Castle, Disneyland HK For a child, any vacation in Hong Kong would barely be complete without a trip to Disneyland. After all, no other place in the world can claim to be a “child’s fantasy come to life”, more than a Disney park. Sure, there are better theme parks out there. Even the competing Ocean Park Hong Kong has loads more thrill and fun, but there’s a certain magic that could only be found in a Disney. From experience, Disneys are rarely the most exciting, but they can show a “world of make believe” like no other. It was our…

Let's talk about international theme park travel with Stefan Zwanzger, 'The Theme Park Guy'
22 May 2013 | 10:54 amBy Robert Niles: Theme parks aren't simply an American phenomenon. Some of the most exciting developments in the theme park industry today are happening outside the United States, and few people have witnessed more of what's happening at theme parks around the world than "The Theme Park Guy," Stefan Zwanzger. A native of Germany who now lives in United Arab Emirates, Stefan's been covering theme parks on his website since 2007. Play your day at Walt Disney World's Epcot
19 May 2013 | 3:04 pmBy Robert Niles: Third in our series of trip-planning posts, for visits to the world's top theme parksWalt Disney envisioned EPCOT as an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, where people would live, work and play in a new urban community, designed for modern efficiency. But he died before his "Florida project" could be completed. 22 May 2013 | 4:30 amI stumbled upon Ryan's photos many years ago. What an amazing collection; this guy took just about every shot that fanatic guests like me could only dream of having the opportunity to get. Imagine having access to walk through the best dark rides...with the lights on...with only a few close friends in tow. It's the type of thing that doesn't happen much. Besides the behind-the-scenes nature of the photos, I really liked that they showed a few youth with their entire future ahead of them. No fear or worry about "what happens if..." Teddy, Disneyland's Shoeshine Boy
20 May 2013 | 4:59 amJust a few weeks ago I was contacted by Teddy, of Teddy & Kenny Shoeshine Boys fame at Disneyland. He came across these photos of himself from the early days of New Orleans Square. Here's what he had to say: I was blown away when I stumbled across this picture of me (Teddy Miller) with the Royal Street Bachelors, around 1966/67 (above). The four years I worked at Disneyland were very memorable. I can tell you I really enjoyed those years of my youth, until I outgrew the character and moved on to become one of the costumed Three Little Pigs for a short while. I remember Kenny Bell the other… -
Main Street U.S.A.'s Penny Arcade
19 May 2013 | 8:00 amThe Penny Arcade is one of my favorite parts of Main Street, U.S.A. It gives such an authentically vintage feel to the Park with its old-fashioned games and musical instruments. This January 1964 image is one of those rare shots that allows me to zoom in a bit closer to get a look at what the Arcade used to look like: Compared to this view from May 2006: It appears that some of the games have been repainted and that Esmeralda's exterior was completely revamped at some point: From 2012: And 2013; looks like more candy, less games. One of these days, I hope to get a good vintage shot of… -
Rock and the Canonflex
18 May 2013 | 5:58 amThis vintage shot of actor Rock Hudson shows that Canon was his camera of choice. Most likely this is a Canonflex camera, which was introduced in May, 1959. It was Canon's first 35mm single-lens reflex camera, which came with a standard 50mm lens. Discontinued five months after release, approximately 17,000 were produced. Today, you can pick one up for around $100. Follow my Daveland updates on Twitter and view my most recent photos on Flickr. See more Rock Hudson photos on my Rock Hudson photo web page.

Opryland 1975
21 May 2013 | 6:00 amTraveling to a park I never experienced, Opryland USA located in Nashville, Tennessee. Based upon the theme of American Music, the park featured thrill rides, themed areas and lots of shows. The first images show a musical extravaganza on the stage themed to a showboat called the Opry Belle. The show looks like it was quite entertaining. One of the main attractions was the Wabash Cannonball. A steel double corkscrew roller coaster manufactured by Arrow Dynamics. -
Three Disneyland Slides From 1965
20 May 2013 | 6:00 amThese three slides were found in a collection purchased at a Swap Meet. These were the only three Disneyland slides. However, there was a nice grouping of New York World's Fair slides. First image is a nice view of the Rivers of America with the Mark Twain circling Tom Sawyer's Island. Quite a nice shot with lots of activity. Next up the Mekong Maiden successfully returns to the dock. It looks like all the passengers are still on board. The last image is of the underwater kingdom as seen from the Submarine Voyage. I like the fish in the middle of the image. -
Souvenir Friday- Disneyland Opening Day Parking Pass
17 May 2013 | 5:57 amAn item I have been chasing for many years is this Opening Day Parking Pass. A friend of mine had purchased a nice grouping of opening day items and he ended up with 2 of the parking passes. When I saw him at a show in California, we discussed the parking pass and he decided to finally sell it to me. A great piece and fits into my collection of opening day items. -
New York World's Fair State of Mind
16 May 2013 | 5:00 amThree new views of the New York World's Fair in 1965. One of the neat things about this set of slides is that they were developed by Sears and have a nice mount. First up is a view of the Avenue of Flags with the Unisphere in the background. The crowd is taking some great pictures. Next up is a shot of a rest area with the Coca Cola Pavilion in the background. I like the bubble structures that were the snack bars. One of my favorite attractions was the US Rubber Royal Tires Ferris Wheel. I wish that the ride was still operational. -

You Are Not Alone...
21 May 2013 | 9:45 pmA new trailer for "Man of Steel" is out...Warner Bros. has delivered an action packed trailer filled with the kind of action we'd expect from a man that can fly, has super human strength and can shoot lasers out of his eyes. Take a look and buy that ticket right now. It really does present a much better looking film than what Bryan Singer gave us. Really excited to see this. Hopefully, they'll tease the much bigger DC Cinematic Universe in this.A reference to Brainiac conquering worlds during the final scenes of this would be the icing on the cake... -
Last American Hero...
21 May 2013 | 12:47 pmSo the Mouse released the final trailer for their new summer film...The fourth trailer for Walt Disney Pictures "The Lone Ranger" has come out. More action, more comedy, more "splosions" and a really wild, Wild West. The folks in Burbank are betting 200+ million on a genre that has been hit or miss over the past few decades.Gone are the days when Hollywood studios would crank out Westerns on a weekly basis, because it was printing money. People would go to see them no matter if they were good, or bad, or the cowboy was singing. It was a distinctly American genre that… -
One Against 4...
21 May 2013 | 12:09 pmSo Micro$oft introduced their successor to the XBox 360...And it's not called the XBox 720 like so many gaming geeks expected. It's called the XBox One. One? Really, didn't they already have a one? That means the fourth version of this will be called, what? The XBox Two? Confusing. I guess they're going back to square one and starting fresh. So now we know the competition that the PS4 will have. But it appears that the guys up in Redmond want to also become like Netflix. Hulu has tried to be a Netflix competitor. Amazon has started… -
Son Of Solo...
21 May 2013 | 11:15 amYes, I know we've had Star Wars casting rumors since last yesterday...But has anyone thought to try and think of who Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be playing? The most logical choice would be the offspring of Han and Leia. So what we might have here is the son of the roguish space pirate. Could this really be Chewie's godson? It strange because I remember when "Mission: Impossible 3" came out reading an interview with Meyers where they asked him if there was any type of role he'd not like to play. And he said science fiction, and then used a pejorative word… -
Steel More Posters...
21 May 2013 | 11:01 amWhoever is working in the Bunny's marketing dept. is burning the midnight oil... No sooner had we published that really cool poster of Jor-El than they let loose with another really swank Kal-El poster, and an incredibly upset General Zod one as well. Not much longer before the Alien arrives on Earth...

This is California - 1957
6 May 2013 | 12:01 amWelcome back to my blog, its been a little quiet lately, "all work and no play", bla, bla, bla.Today we've neat old book from 1957, "This is California". Karl Obert is the photographer and there are some fine (black and white only) photographs in this book. Where was this taken from?Fairytale Castle... Are those the infamous "Midget Horses"?Looks like a good size audience for the Flight Circle. Some love for Knott's Berry Farm. This must be the "Pike" with that freakish Hi Ride crane thing from hell.Wow...So that's what MacArthur Park was intended to be like. This spot has…

The Old Castle's Secret
19 May 2013 | 6:39 amGet out the tomato soup and make a grilled cheese sandwich - it's comic book time! The folks over at Fantagraphics Books have published another volume of Carl Barks comics. This time up we have "Donald Duck 'The Old Castle's Secret'" (hardback; 226 pages). These books are beautifully published and offered at a modest price. My only complaint is that I wished they published the new volumes faster. -
Unseen Crump Vault
17 Feb 2013 | 7:01 pmBoy, am I behind in my book blogging!I've purchased three new books in the last month."Seen, Unseen Disneyland: What You See at Disneyland But Never Really See" (Paperback; 193 pgs). This isn't a behind-the-scenes book nor is it a book about Disneyland secrets. Russell Flores, the author, takes a very close look at all that attention to detail the Imagineers throw into everything they create. The book is jam-packed with photos to illustrate every concept. "Unseen" is very well researched and Flores does not fall into any of the urban legend traps. My only nitpick, it that the photo… -
WOC Magna Card

Who's Afraid
29 Dec 2012 | 8:12 amI received Jim Korkis' new book "Who's Afraid of the Song of the South and Other Forbidden Disney Stories (Paperback; 276 pgs) as a Christmas present.Ask anyone who collects Disney films and they'll ask you the same question, "When will Song of the South be released on DVD"? Heck, this question constantly comes up at the annual Disney stock holders meeting.Jim Korkis doesn't offer any opinions in his well-researched book. He just lays out all the facts and figures around the creation of this film. He leaves this decision making up to the individual reader as to whether or not the topic is…

Twain and River, 1959
22 May 2013 | 12:01 amHere's a bright sunny photo of the Mark Twain, decorated with patriotic bunting - either for fourth of July, or maybe as part of the opening of the new attractions in Tomorrowland (you know which ones I mean). My favorite detail is the pair of cast members in the foreground, with their groovy straw hats. Tom and Huck! And I like this picture of a busy Frontierland. Do I see three canoes (one is partly hidden by another, and a third is waaay in the distance)? There also appears to be another raft to Tom Sawyer Island just to the left of the mill - I have never confirmed that there was more than… -
Three From the 70s
21 May 2013 | 12:01 amI recently found a small lot of stereo slides that I am guessing are from around 1970 or '71. Not all of them are gems, but hey, I can't be too choosy. This first one is pretty neat, who doesn't love a view of the original "New Tomorrowland", looking fresh and crunchy. The Peoplemover trains never looked better than when they were painted aqua, royal blue, yellow, and (not seen here) tomato red. Adventure Thru Inner Space, man, did I love that attraction. This one's OK, mostly showing the Skyway, Matterhorn, and the teeming masses (waiting to ride the Subs, perhaps). That kid mighty glad… -
Monorail Track (and post # 2500)
20 May 2013 | 12:01 amWell whaddaya know... GDB celebrated its 7-year anniversary about a week ago, and now another milestone has been reached; today marks the 2,500th post. BUT... I'm not going to make this an excuse for another "hooray for me" fest! I have an unusual series of photos for you, featuring some sort of work being done on the Monorail track. The slides are date-stamped "November 1961", and the Monorail had been extended to the Disneyland Hotel that year, so it is safe to presume that this work had something to do with the new track. As you can see, workmen are up on the beamway, operating a… -
Leftuggies
19 May 2013 | 12:01 amHere are three snoozetastic Leftuggies™ (known to most people as leftovers) - previously unposted scans that are sure to put you to sleep immediately.By 1963, animator/Imagineer Marc Davis had put his stamp on the Jungle Cruise, introducing small tableaus with gentle humor. This example is a weird one! "So, we'll have the mother elephant with her rear end facing the folks in the boat. Flanking her will be two baby elephants." "And....?". "That's it, my homey. It is existential or Kafkaesque or something". "Oh. Ha ha?". I have noticed that a lot of the scenes involving elephants,… -
Train Stuff
18 May 2013 | 12:01 amToday's "Anything Goes" entry celebrates trains. Everybody loves trains, even communists. This first photo shows a beautiful miniature locomotive that was once located at Crandon Park, Florida (famous for its miles of sandy white beaches). From what little I could glean online, this 2 foot gauge train debuted around 1949, and was powered by gasoline rather than live steam. Accounts vary, but it seems to have operated until the mid-1970's, when it was replaced with a completely different train - but as of now none are still there. This next picture is from July 1971, and it features the…

Bob Clampett, 100 and counting
13 May 2013 | 12:29 pmI was just visiting one of the most important animation blogs on the 'net-Michael Barrier's, to catch up, and saw he'd done a lovely post marking the 100th birthday of Bob Clampett, on May 8th. Good grief, I missed it. Of course, every day is a good day to remember Clampett-that wonderful, nutty, brilliant and lovable cartoon genius. Following is my Bob Clampett birthday post from 2006:I volunteered to work during the ASIFA annual cel sale in 1981; Bob Clampett happened to be there signing these preprinted drawings; his wife Sody was with him. I introduced myself, finally,… -
Adam and Dog: The ineffable beauty of drawn animation
20 Feb 2013 | 6:50 pmDrawings of Dog by Minkyu Lee. Drawing of Adam by Minkyu Lee. in·ef·fa·bleɪnˈɛfəbəl Show Spelleadjective 1. incapable of being expressed or described in words; inexpressible: ineffable joy. One late night about eighteen months ago, my officemate and fellow story artist Justin Hunt walked in with an animation sequence under his arm. It was old-school 2D, immediately identifiable by the sandwich of paper and cardboard secured with extra-long rubber bands. Here was something novel! Surrounded by cintiqs and working on cg… -

The New York Times on the design of Brave's Merida
20 Jun 2012 | 5:15 pm Matt Nolte's early sketch of Elinor tangling with Merida's unruly mane. c. Disney/PixarOn June 15th the New York Times ran a very nice piece dealing with the design development of Merida, the heroine of "Brave". See it here. And not only see, but hear: as is often done at the Times, there's an accompanying slide show of artwork with narration by production dsigner Steve Pilcher and directors Brenda Chapman and Mark Andrews.I've been looking forward to seeing the finished film for some time, and will finally get my chance this Friday. Where are the 2014 Packages?
15 May 2013 | 12:06 pmI've been getting a lot of questions about 2014 packages, so I thought I would address it in a quick post. Historically, we've been seeing packages come out in early June, usually three or four days after the ticket price increase is announced. I would expect early June again this year just because Disney wants everyone using their "My Disney Experience" and linking their dining reservations to their rooms. To do that,… -

Resort Review: Disney's Art of Animation
18 Apr 2013 | 8:23 amLightening and Sally welcome guests. When someone asks me about Art of Animation, I always say the same thing: It's the smartest thing Disney has ever done when it comes to resorts. Three well-themed pools, suites that sleep six, and a fantastic food court make this a favorite with just about everyone who has the pleasure of staying there. Let's talk about what Art of Animation has to offer.Room Types:Art of Animation falls into the "value" category of Disney resorts, but in name only. The theming is simply the best on property. While some guests…

Crystal Palace Review
17 May 2013 | 4:00 amThe Crystal Palace is a Winnie the Pooh and friends character buffet located just past Main Street U.S.A in the Magic Kingdom. The restaurant is inspired by Victorian greenhouses of the late 1800s and brims with light, topiaries and tropical palms. I was very surprised by how beautiful it was! Despite being very busy, we were seated right away. Our server was very friendly and helpful. In my opinion, he was one of our best servers from our trip. The characters of The Crystal Palace were my favorite. They were the most interactive and acted just as you… -

Trip Report Update: Photo Tour of Aulani’s Waikolohe Valley
20 May 2013 | 10:30 amI have almost 500 photos from our last full day in Hawaii, and although I swear I really am editing, I’m going to split the rest of Day 5 over two posts just so you don’t break the scroll wheel on your mouse. On our last full day in Hawaii, we blew off our plans to hit the Oahu sights we’d missed because we didn’t feel like we’d gotten to enjoy all our resort had to offer yet. We started the day with an invisible sunrise and breakfast at the resort’s other sit-down restaurant, Makahiki. Then we toured the model Disney Vacation Club villa like the one I was originally going to book for our trip. If you’re curious what a… -
Fancy Cakes Now Available at Epcot!
9 May 2013 | 9:30 amIf you’ve read any of my trip reports, you know I’m sort of obsessed with cake—specifically, with ordering cakes at Disney, to the point where I have an entire section of this site devoted to ordering cake at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Two of the most disappointing Disney cakes I’ve ever had came from Epcot, and I’ve been continually frustrated with their supermarket-level quality (and insistence on using blashphemous whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream). The work-around has been to order cakes from the Yacht & Beach Club’s pastry team,… -

After our dinner at ‘AMA ‘AMA, we met back up with the Roots for front-row seats at the event. If you’re wondering whether you can skip a real luau in favor of Aulani’s version, read on…

Annette's at Disneyland Paris
14 May 2013 | 12:30 amDid you know that Disneyland Paris has a really keen '50s diner that pays tribute to Annette Funicello? Here's some great photos, thanks to Mouse Clubhouse friend Carla Bolonotto!Carla's favorite meal is the Eurochick sandwich. I was surprised at the name, thinking it was referring to a girl from Europe, although the slang term for women as "chicks" was more acceptable in the '50s, I was glad to know the "chick" refers to chicken! Of course! At Annette's there are U.S. classics such as the Rock n' Roll Burger and the All-American Hot Dog, and I don't know what entree I'd get but I'd certainly…

Recently, I walked out of our local Century theater after seeing Iron Man 3 with awesome thoughts rolling through my head, but not only did I have Marvel thoughts in my head, I wanted more. Upcoming this year is Thor 2: The Dark World and in the beginning of 2014 is Captain America: The Winter Solider. But, I needed even more great Marvel features, preferably featuring S.H.E.I.L.D., my favorite fictitious spy agency even topping the Men in Black. (For a… -

Don’t Bring Me the Problems-I Make the Problems-Walt Disney Quotes
9 May 2013 | 7:31 pmTonight I was joining in on the weekly #dizchat and we were discussing the old obscure quote from Walt Disney that we had on our Disney Dose Facebook page. After talking awhile, Sean from DisneyDayByDay brought up his favorite quote which I loved so much that I thought I had to share it. “Don’t bring me problems-I make the problems.” -Walt Disney The post Don’t Bring Me the Problems-I Make the Problems-Walt Disney Quotes appeared first on Disney Dose.

Star Wars Angry Birds Toys – A Better Combo Than PB&J
14 May 2013 | 9:58 pmThere has been a galactic battle raging in our living room the past few days. Angry Birds have been flying through the air and destroying an AT-AT walker from Star Wars, much to the delight of my son. Yes, Angry Birds Star Wars toys have landed in our home. Like most people, we have spent too many hours playing Angry Birds on our phones. And like all the cool kids, the Star Wars films are some of our favorites (well, at least the original films are). So when we had the chance to play with Angry Birds toys with a Star Wars theme, it was a perfect match. Angry Birds Star Wars AT-AT Attack… -
Tilapia Grilled in Corn Husks with Roasted Jalapeno-Lime Butter
3 May 2013 | 6:27 pmWith Cinco de Mayo this weekend, I was in the mood for something with a little bit of a kick. The tilapia with roasted jalapeno-lime butter dish is more of a Tex Mex item than something you’d find at a traditional Mexican restaurant. But it is a great tasting entree that your family will really enjoy. I cooked this dish on my propane grill, but you could use a charcoal grill as well. You don’t have to regulate the temperature of your grill very much when cooking this, so it is an easy one that pretty much anyone can make. Cooking the fish in the corn husks sort of steams it and… -
Coffee and Writing, the Best Part of the Day
29 Apr 2013 | 12:15 amWhen do you find time to write? After talking with a few other dad bloggers, it seems most of us do our best work late in the evening. Our days are filled with work and early evenings are spent with the family. But after everyone goes to bed, the house quiets down and it seems many of us find time to indulge in our hobby. Over the past month, I have struggled to find energy in the evening. The 50+ hour work weeks have taken their toll and, more often than not, I have been tempted to just fall asleep on the couch. My Keurig and I have become good friends, as a cup of coffee in the evening has… -
There’s Nothing Like that New House Smell
24 Apr 2013 | 6:56 pmThere is something special about that new car smell. Sure, buying a used car can be grand if you are upgrading from a bucket of bolts. But given the opportunity, almost everyone I know would prefer to buy new and to be the first to put some miles on the new engine. The strange thing is that many people overlook the advantages of buying something new when purchasing a home. The romantic idea of sweat equity lures some into buying an existing home, but I have several friends who have lived with outdated wallpaper or shag carpeting for years simply because they never got around to the upgrades. -

13 May 2013 | 5:28 pmFree stuff is great, right? I mean if Disney offered you a FREE Dining Plan, you’d think that was a pretty darn awesome deal. Right? Well, things are not always what they seem.
