For the past several months, I have been covering the beautiful and detailed pavilions around World Showcase, and today we’ll take a look at Canada. Our ally and neighbor to the north have some of the most beautiful scenery and is the second largest country in area after Russia. The country was first settled by the French, but in 1763, Great Britain took control. With both countries colonizing the land, both French and English is spoken. In 1867 the British North America Act united English-speaking Upper Canada (Ontario) and French-speaking Lower Canada (Quebec) with Nova Scotia and New…

Seasoned veterans of Walt Disney World can all attest to the fact that there is a lot of walking, and at times all the sounds, crowds, rides, and action can get overwhelming. It is okay, and highly recommended that you take a break during the day to rest your feet and mind. Magic Kingdom is the most popular park and is often the most stimulating, crowded, and busy. If you are in the mood to stay at the park, but need to sit down in a quiet place I suggest heading to Fronterland. Board the raft to Tom Sawyer Island. There is a covered porch with wooden rocking chairs that overlooks the water…

I know, I know, it’s still summer – it’s still hot – (over 100 here at Walt Disney World!) but I find myself drifting to thoughts of cool autumn breezes, falling leaves, and pumpkins…Okay, maybe some of those things don’t exactly happen here in Florida, but a girl can dream. Believe it or not, “Orlando Halloween” is right around the corner (that’s what we locals call it when Halloween descends upon the area in early August while we’re all sweating in the sun) and that means lots of fun options to get in the Fall spirit. And while I…

Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

  • Tax Incentives Lure Pirates V Down Under

    John Frost
    2 Sep 2014 | 2:09 am
It’s a strong possibility the fifth edition of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be filmed no where near the island nations south of the continent. Instead, production will move down under to the land of Oz, thanks to a $20.2 million tax incentive from the government of Australia. Disney had previously been promised similar tax incentives to film the “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” remake in 2013, but since that project has been shelved, the tax credits were transferred to Pirates V. It’s not 100% official that the movie will move, Disney is, of…

Earning $22 Million over the three day weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy not only beat out two newcomers this weekend it has now totaled more than $280 million domestically and $553 million worldwide (with China and Japan debuts still ahead). • You win some, you lose some: Mantis to close next month, as Falcon's Fury opens officially

    2 Sep 2014 | 9:11 am
By Robert Niles: Cedar Point announced this morning that its Bolliger & Mabillard stand-up coaster, Mantis, will close on Oct. 19.Mantis opened in 1996 and featured a 137-foot initial drop and four inversions, including a 119-foot vertical loop. Note, though, that the press release video says that Mantis will be "squashed," suggesting that, like, Six Flags Magic Mountain's Colossus, the ride might not be completely torn down, but transformed in some way. The "take one last stand" might be the real tell. New trains and a new name, anyone? In the meantime, Busch Gardens Tampa announced this…
  • Monday Top 10: The best coaster parks in North America

    1 Sep 2014 | 11:32 am
By Robert Niles: Today we honor the impending close of another thrill-ride season here in North America by honoring the best roller coaster parks on the continent. Quantity of quality is what's important here — we are scoring parks on the number of highly-rated coasters they have, rather than simply giving credit for the total number of coasters. This helps parks a few really great coasters move up the list, while parks that just order a bunch of mediocre thrill rides don't get as much love from us. Let's get to our readers' collective picks for the Top 10 roller coaster parks in North…
  • Food and Wine in a wheelchair? Here's how to navigate the Epcot festival

By Daniel Etcheberry: I always attend Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival every year. I’m a foodie and a wine sipper, so this event is an annual pilgrimage for me. Also, as a wheelchair-bound person, I have had some practical issues that I had to solve during the years. The main one is the fact that there are no tables; people eat and drink standing up, unless you are one of the few lucky ones who find an available bench. Even if I find one, it is not an ideal place to put the food and drinks; it’s uneven, and there are ducks and squirrels ready to snatch my food when I get distracted. One…

Still, we arrived at the park early and met James Koehl and his son Anton for some Early Ride Time on Millennium Force. I really love the golden glow of sunset that bathes this August 1970 image of Fantasyland, taken from the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship.I especially like how it gives us a great up-close look at this cool lantern aboard the ship. I am guessing it is original to 1955, as it appears to be a bit worn.Today marks the 35th Anniversary of Big Thunder Mountain; it has truly been a blast for this attraction!Follow my Daveland updates on Twitter and view my most recent photos on Flickr.See more Daveland Disneyland Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant photos at my main website.

Two black and white and slightly out of focus black and white snapshots of Santa's Village in Lake Arrowhead California. A fun park that opened before Disneyland and featured the typical Santa Claus attractions including meeting Santa every day of the year, a toy shop, and a frozen north pole. The first snap shot is of the entry building as seen from the parking lot. I like the great directional sign out front and the fake snow line on the peak of the A-frame. Next up is the home of the big man himself, Santa Claus. Note the countdown clock until December 25th. There are rumors that an…

Since Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, I am posting two nice early postcards of Coney Island. Coney Island is a mecca for summertime fun and has featured many fun rides over the years. The first postcard from this wonderland by the sea is the Wonder Wheel at night published by the owner and manufacturer of the ride, the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company. The postcard is dated 1920. The second postcard is earlier and features a fun house attraction, the Noah's Ark. The ride would slowly rock back and forth while guests would see vignettes of Noah and the animals. A quick stop for a portrait shot in front of the Main Street Cinema with the glory of Main Street decorated for Christmas in the background. The Cigar Store Indian looks especially proud in this image. Note the sandwich board advertising some silent film starring comedian Mack Swain. Last image is from the Skyway again…

Next up is the Mouse that started it all, and he is surrounded by adoring fans. Be sure to note the Santa Fe Disneyland conductor coming in to work. Here are two 1956 views of Main Street Station from different lots. Bowser (with the rolled-up sleeves) is taking a photo that I wish I could see… a nice detail of the C.K. Holliday. As usual, the "Holliday" is pulling the Freight cars...… while the E.P. Ripley pulled the Passenger cars. I love the names on these cars: "Colorado Rockies" (Wikipedia says it is "Rocky Mountains", but that's not what is says in this picture),  and "Land of Pueblos" are visible here. There was also "Navajo Chief", "Painted Desert", and "Grand Canyon". Those names evoke the romance, natural beauty,…

We're still slogging through the worst of the slide lot from August 1969. They're not a total loss though! This one is sort of odd - our photographer was standing on the remains of the old Monsanto House of the Future - pretty much just the foundation and fountains, along with the reflecting pond that surrounded part of it. So in that respect this is a little bit interesting.I understand why that trough is carrying water to the waterwheel (to keep away vampires). But why is that side-trough allowing water to spill out of the side? Just for looks? Would it have controlled the amount of water so…

Welcome to Storyland, in lovely Glen, New Hampshire (surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest)! Storyland opened in 1954; this charming little park started out with a single ride - an old fire truck! But owners Bob and Ruth Morrell collected dolls based on German storybook characters, and these dolls inspired Bob and Ruth to add tableaus populated by characters from various fairytales, fables, and "Mother Goose" stories. There's Humpty Dumpty. Then passed through and went on my way. Not really a big deal, but it got me wondering... "what's the big deal about…

    14 Aug 2014 | 8:09 am
I know, I know, it’s still summer – it’s still hot – (over 100 here at Walt Disney World!) but I find myself drifting to thoughts of cool autumn breezes, falling leaves, and pumpkins…Okay, maybe some of those things don’t exactly happen here in Florida, but a girl can dream. Believe it or not, “Orlando Halloween” is right around the corner (that’s what we locals call it when Halloween descends upon the area in early August while we’re all sweating in the sun) and that means lots of fun options to get in the Fall spirit. shopDisney is a bi-weekly blog that will focus on Disney merchandise and products sold in the parks, in Disney stores, and in other retail markets.  We will explore product reviews, affordability, and to whom the products are marketed.  Like any other good product review, we will conclude with a rating scale for several different key components: price, age group, and whether the product is a “must have.” The mention of this might make some of you hate me and resent that I am even mentioning the topic, but I wanted to make sure that you are all aware that some of the Hallmark Christmas…

If you love Disney as much as I do, you’ll be well acquainted with the emptiness that one might experience when there is a lack of Disney magic in one’s everyday life and the Walt Disney World® parks are over 1,000 miles away. You have no idea when your next visit will be and there’s no new masterpiece of a Disney film to look forward to in the immediate future. What is a Disnerd to do in hard times like these? If marathon-ing all of your favorite Disney movies just isn’t doing the trick this time, the next best thing to being at one of the parks (as I have recently discovered) is to…

  • Disney Quick Tip: Relax on Tom Sawyer Island

    1 Sep 2014 | 2:00 pm
Seasoned veterans of Walt Disney World can all attest to the fact that there is a lot of walking, and at times all the sounds, crowds, rides, and action can get overwhelming. It is okay, and highly recommended that you take a break during the day to rest your feet and mind. Magic Kingdom is the most popular park and is often the most stimulating, crowded, and busy. If you are in the mood to stay at the park, but need to sit down in a quiet place I suggest heading to Fronterland. Board the raft to Tom Sawyer Island. There is a covered porch with wooden rocking chairs that overlooks the water…

shopDisney is a bi-weekly blog that will focus on Disney merchandise and products sold in the parks, in Disney stores, and in other retail markets.

These resorts are connected by a very pleasant walk along the Sassagoula River and are favorites on the Unofficial Guide reader survey. If you are staying at the Walt Disney Resort, one of the first decisions you will make is where you will be staying. If you decide that you are going to be staying on Disney property, next you get to decide between Value, Moderate, Deluxe, and Deluxe Villas. Many people form strong opinions on which hotel is the best, and I’m not here to argue the point.

The price for the base menu at Victoria and Albert’s is $135 per person.  You can add extras to that very…

As you know the World Showcase at Epcot Center features pavilions of countries from around the world. The intent of this “Permanent World’s Fair” was to fill up all the ‘reserved’ spaces, but unfortunately only eleven have been built to date. The last country to take a spot was Norway back in 1988. • Staying Connected is Easier with T-Mobile Free Data For Life

    Dan
    20 Aug 2014 | 12:00 pm
It felt odd when I realized everything I owned could fit inside a giant moving truck. It felt even more bizarre to see the truck drive away. After months of planning, we loaded the dogs into the car, locked the front door one last time, and set the GPS on our T-Mobile 4G tablet to our new address in Seattle. Moving to a new state was bittersweet. There is excitement about the new job and our new home. There is also a lot we will miss from our little farming town in Oregon. The job opportunities were limited in Oregon, but it was pretty neat to have farmers as neighbors. We always had fresh…
  • When Should You Give Your Child a Cell Phone?

    Dan
    8 Aug 2014 | 10:35 pm
We have a lot of firsts coming up. My son is entering first grade. This will be his first time in public school. And this will be the first time he won’t be in the same school where my wife teaches. Our family will be experiencing a lot of new things as we move from Oregon to Washington and change always comes with its share of uncertainty. The after school pick up seems to be the biggest source of worry. While I can rationally remind myself of the countless times I made it from the classroom to the school bus as a child, it doesn’t do much to lessen my overprotective tendencies as a…
  • Camelbaks Can Help You Beat the Heat and Save Money at Disneyland

    Dan
    4 Aug 2014 | 11:08 pm
During a recent visit to Disneyland, we noticed that several families were wearing Camelbaks, the water filled backpacks that are often popular with hikers and bicyclists. At first, the idea of bringing a Camelbak seemed excessive. Does anyone really need (or want to) carry that much water with them at Disneyland? But as the day wore on and the temperature continued to rise, I couldn’t help but think that this was a brilliant idea. From a cost perspective, you would be amazed at how much you can spend on drinks during a hot day. When we got home, we added up the cost of buying drinks…

What is the biggest adventure you have ever taken with your children? A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…
  • Spark Your Child’s Imagination with Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Toys from Hasbro

    20 Jul 2014 | 11:14 pm
If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…
