Perhaps no company or business today has more merchandising linked to its products than the Disney Company. From the earliest days in the studio’s history the marketing of Disney merchandise brought in much needed revenue for the company. But in the beginning, Walt never realized the huge revenue potential possibilities of licensing his product. The first Disney created character to be used in this way was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but this was mainly for publicity. It was in late 1929 while he was in New York negotiating with Pat Powers, when a man approached him in the lobby of the…

    1 Aug 2015 | 9:38 am
Of all the characters, Artisans, and friends that Walt Disney had amassed over his long, successful career, none was more important than his own brother, Roy O. Disney. The bond these two men developed over their lifetimes helped shaped the Disney Empire and even their own personal lives. Roy Oliver Disney was the third son born to Elias and Flora Disney on June 6th, 1893. There were two older siblings, Herbert Disney, born December 8, 1888 and Raymond, December 30th, 1890. Even though Roy’s oldest brother was just 5 years his senior, he was never as close to his brothers as when…

Walt Disney is famous for his quotes, and perhaps the most poignant one was… “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality” And in Walt’s long and storied career, this certainly rings true. From Walt’s humblest beginnings to the zenith of his triumphs, he always had the most talented and devoted people on his staff to make his dreams come true. From Ub Iwerks and Carl Stalling in the beginning, there are countless people over the years who contributed to making his ideas and dreams come to…

    27 Aug 2015 | 10:58 am
By Amanda Jenkins: As Labor Day approaches, we know that summer is coming to an end. But there is a place though that captures the essence of summer and holds on to it all year long. That would be Disney’s Beach Club Resort. I’m sure that I am not the only one who has ever rode the Friendships between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios and gazed longingly at the large pirate ship, where squeals of delight were heard. The white sandy beach stretched out along Crescent Lake beckons you toward the resort. Needless to say, this bright blue resort called to me like a mythical siren. I had…

A nice view of the dock on the Rivers of America in Frontierland. This is prior to the addition of the Columbia, so the landing is known as the Mark Twain Landing. I like the moose horns on the side of the landing adding to the rustic feel of the landing. Even at this time, the landscaping is pretty barren around the landing.
  • Plantation House Sign Frontierland

    26 Aug 2015 | 7:04 am
This contact print shows the lovely Southern Gothic sign for the Plantation House in Frontierland. The wheel motif is a nice touch on the top and the oval Chicken Dinners sign is great. The best part is to look in the background and see a number of Jungle Cruise launches docked at Fowler's Harbor. There was a recent Facebook post showing the same situation and discussion that there was only one dock at the time and the launches were being worked on. I think the ride of moving the launches to Fowler's Harbor would be a fun one.

The track is interesting, looking like a plank road with a single bus power source. The young drivers look very happy to be on the ride.

  • Viewliner and Station, 1957

    28 Aug 2015 | 12:01 am
I love the humble and lovable little Disneyland and Santa Fe Viewliner - the fastest miniature train in the world! There were two of them running on a single track; the salmon-colored train that used a station in Tomorrowland, and the icy blue train seen in this photo, which is sitting at the station in Fantasyland. The Junior Autopia is below us (along with a roadway that circled Holiday Hill - no Matterhorn yet). If you look carefully you can see some motor boats to the right, along with its load area to the left (notice the life preserver on the front of the building). It's always fun…

Here are two from a newly-acquired batch from August of 1970! I like this sunny, bright photo of the Matterhorn, with waterfalls and Skyway buckets and a dash of awesomeness. There's even a bobsled, if you look carefully. I have plenty of photos of this attraction, and yet this particular image makes me love it all over again.Meanwhile, up in the Skyway, let's look northward toward It's a Small World. The Disneyland Railroad is just passing through - there's no stopping in Fantasyland anymore. Partly hidden behind the treetops are two structures - a yellow and red striped abomination (I…

I love vintage snapshots! My supply of those is almost gone, just like everything else. Boo. If you have been paying attention, then you know that I am especially fond of old Tomorrowland views - like this one! There's the Rocket Jets, still looking fantastic 47 years after the picture was taken. I still don't get why this ride was removed, but I suspect that it is a case of somebody thinking that the Astro-Orbiter was somehow better (for a variety of reasons). It isn't.Any view of the Peoplemover is welcome; you can see all four colors in this picture (aqua, blue, yellow, red). And way…

    28 Aug 2015 | 3:31 am
The interesting thing about Disney's properties in Hong Kong and Shanghai are how different they will be. Unlike the Magic Kingdom in Florida and the original Disneyland in California, the two Chinese parks take pains not to overlap attractions. Both are modern takes on the "Disneyland" concept but HKDL's scale and layout are more traditional. HKDL is somewhat of a throwback park in that it's the most similar to Walt's park in Anaheim. Main Street USA and the castle are identical. A railroad circles the park. But the rest of the park takes the old themes in new directions. Shanghai…

  • Question Mystery, Is this the Pope House before it was moved?

    Disneyland 1951
    28 Aug 2015 | 1:01 am
Mystery Fans: Help solve this question. From 1951 until early 1956 the property that became the Disneyland backlot was my personal playground. I would spend most Saturdays playing there while my Father spent the day the Viking Trailers catching up on running the place. In the past I wondered if the house in these poor quality photos was the house saved. I looked at the aerial photos and determined that it wasn't that house because it was in a different location, about 200' from the current location of the Pope house. I knew a house was saved but knew little about it. I thought the house in my…
  • Idea Fantasmic Amphitheater...

    27 Aug 2015 | 6:52 pm
Hi, Now I have no actual inside information, so this is just an idea. But several of the "fan-made" maps on here got me thinking. What if as part of the Star Wars Land/Galaxy build out they added a Fantasmic type amphitheater... You know kind of a way to add back to the area. Now it wouldn't probably be as big as the one in WDW, but could be big enough for the priority seating they sell with the restaurant packages. Now don't ask me how logistically this would work for the show itself. Anyways, thoughts?

Forgive me, but even now, I'm 'new' to the comic-book universe. I say I'm 'new,' because I never got into it, but I'm willing to try! Especially if Disney Imagineers are going to bend their imaginations toward it. I'm a curious neophile! But, the person in me who always wondered about the difference between DC- and Marvel Comics now wonders: Is that what's hanging up Disney's development of Marvel properties? I mean, let's say Disney sets up Marvel Land. Then, what's to stop Knotts or Universal (or Legoland or anyone, really) from acquiring rights to DC Comics properties, and setting up…

  • Two More Days At Disneyland Paris

    charlottebibliophile
    27 Aug 2015 | 10:12 am
Last month my family and I went to Disneyland Paris for the third time. We last visited two summers ago, and we decided to experience the Disney magic once again. This year was rather different from our previous visits, since we brought our dog with us. Disney do have kennel facilities, so we were able to leave Molly whilst we explored the magic of the parks, but we couldn’t leave her for hours at a time. On our first day we headed straight for Walt Disney Studios, intent on tackling some of the bigger rides before the heavy queues began. Our first stop was Crush’s Coaster –…

The first day in Disneyland Paris started with some good old fashioned exploring. After checking into the Disneyland Hotel, we dropped the luggage in the room, rinsed off the recycled plane air, and put on our mouse ears. Cue adventure time! I’m not sure why they changed the script from the Disneyland classic: “Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy.” But, hey – you do you, DLP. I’m not gonna hate. DLP’s Town Square and Main Street are very much like Disney World. So much space! I think they’ve really learned from…

7 days into our 2-month Europe trip & what a blur it has been! Hence, the cover pic (see what I did there?). If what we’ve experienced, thus far, is any indication of what’s to come, then finding adequate time to provide regular, ongoing updates will be a quite a challenge. Therefore, I’ve decided to try and provide a weekly write-up during this time to give everyone slices of the #SeattleBundas life on the road that complement the myriad Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts currently provide. As always, feedback is welcome.  Monday - Travel Day (Seattle to…

Our little French taxi pulled into the Disneyland Hotel just after 9am on Saturday, August 15. It was rainy and grey, but still so picturesque. Ain’t she a beaut? Lots of Grand Floridian vibes. Plus, it’s literally 100m from the doorsteps of Disneyland Paris. Most of the check-in/getting settled bits are pretty fuzzy. I was LE TIRED, ok. But I do remember the concierge and registration people loving Lilo 2.0, and everyone being really friendly; not that you’d expect anything less from a Disney institution. One super duper awesome thing = our room was ready right when we…

So. The journey here. My flight out of LAX left around 8:30am, which meant an early morning wake up call and rushed goodbyes to my little fur babies at home (#sobs). Then, equally rushed and teary-eyed goodbyes to my human loved ones at the AA Terminal. Los Angeles to Dallas Fort Worth to Paris Charles de Gaulle; that was our flight itinerary. My Lilo “Cuddle Clone” (aka, Lilo 2.0) was one of my absolutely-positively-must-bring-with-me items. If you are a dog person or have any sort of pet, YOU NEED ONE OF THESE. Basically, you send a ton of pictures of your fur baby to the Cuddle…

    10 Aug 2015 | 5:33 pm
From Barrier's blog, photographs of Jaxon posing for Bill Tytla's benefit on his "Night On Bald Mountian" animation. "Yeah, without a shirt" he says in the interview. "And don't think some of the fellows around the studio didn't have a lot of fun with those photostats."There are a few writers on animation without whose work there'd be little or no bedrock of history to learn from. These are the people who did first-person interviews with veterans now long dead, who made tremendous efforts to screen and analyze films not readily available anywhere, and who produced books that…

    11 Sep 2014 | 5:12 pm
It takes a long time to look through John Canemaker's new book  The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis and the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic, and it should. Nearly 300 pages are filled with examples of every aspect of Disney's production: drawings, model sheets, camera setups, and hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of how shots were achieved, animators at work, models posing for animators, reference photos of animals and humans, cels, drawings, the Burbank studio being built, "The Reluctant Dragon" live action production, Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio. Numerous examples of…

    7 Sep 2014 | 10:57 pm
It's always an event when John Canemaker comes to Los Angeles-literally. In 2012 he was here to present and moderate a program honoring the work of John and Faith Hubley, a fascinating and wonderful evening.  Now in September we have an embarrassment of riches. This coming Thursday it's a double dose of Canemaker and author and author/librarian Christina Rice, both authors of new books on the enigmatic Herman Schultheis. They'll be reading and signing in downtown's Central Library from 6 to 8pm, and the event is free. Then on Saturday, a triple threat: on Saturday, Sept. 13th,…

Is there anyone in animation who isn't excited by the work of Mary Blair?  Oh, probably a few misanthropes or those who go the contrarian route, but Blair's gargantuan reputation grows year after year for good reason. Many have spoken and written about her influence more eloquently than I ever could, but nothing beats seeing the real thing, up close and personal. To this end the Walt Disney Family Museum is opening the largest show to date of Blair's accomplishments both inside and outside animation.  Curated by Oscar-winning animator, writer (and Blair biographer) and NYU professor…

While I may be totally messing with Disney’s intended demographic for their newest merchandise line, Twenty Eight & Main – designed for the “Discerning Gentleman…” I can’t help but be excited for the great graphics and designs used and the promise of more to come. Like many other posts which I begin here lately, this one has been brewing a while, probably since the EPCOT 30 celebration put on by D23 back in *gulp* 2012…wow, has it really been that long? Well anyway, I wanted to say a lot about D23 back then, and since that time, my sentiments have only grown. I feel that I should preface this by saying that, yes, I am a charter D23 member. Growing up in the 1980’s and falling in love with the Walt Disney World of that time, and then EPCOT Center, I was lucky enough to have parents who were equally as interested and full of love for the…

I’ve wanted to write a post with this title since my first visit to Disneyland in 2011. I will probably still write about the different types of Disneyland differences in future posts, but today, it’s all about the intangible. The date of my first visit is actually embarrassing to admit – a lifelong Disney fan such as myself only visiting the original park that started it all, just 4 short years ago. And yet, I feel such love and devotion to this place, it’s almost as if I’ve now edited it into my childhood memories and have meshed its history with my own.

The Disney park currently known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been the much maligned “not-a-full-day-park” for years and years now. It usually comes in 3rd or 4th place, depending on whether the person choosing enjoys Disney’s Animal Kingdom or not. I have personally defended Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the past, based on the memories and the hope it once held, and the potential future I thought it could enjoy. However, as of late, much like the former EPCOT Center, DHS has been slowly cannibalizing itself in the name of “progress” and throwing…

Like most visitors to Walt Disney World, I love choosing my vacation souvenirs.  I even have a method for how I make my selections.  During the early days of the trip, I take some time to scope out the options at all four parks, Downtown Disney and more than a few resorts.  I typically do not purchase anything until I feel I have perused the places offering the sort of items I prefer.  After having done so, it is not uncommon for me to spend the morning of the last day making my all purchases.  The reason behind my patient pursuit is that I do not want to spend my set-aside money only to…

Spaceship Earth & “the Wand”   This photo shows the EPCOT landmark, Spaceship Earth, with the Wand that was added in 2000. The wand was removed in 2007. Like the Sorcerer’s Hat at Hollywood Studios, the Wand had some fans, but was also unpopular with others. This shot is from our trip in 2004, and I kind of got used to the sight of the wand on Spaceship Earth. Having said that, I prefer Spaceship Earth as it was before the Wand, and as it appears now. So for you fans of the Wand, I hope you enjoy the photo. Share your Throwback Thursday photos with us!

By Dani One of the first things I noticed that was different at Universal Orlando and SeaWorld versus Walt Disney World is the refillable mugs inside the theme parks. What I didn’t realize until after my first few months of becoming a regular Universal Orlando visitor is the substantial variety of refillable mug programs available throughout Universal Orlando. There’s four options just in the theme parks themselves, then there’s two different programs at the Universal hotels, and finally two programs inside CityWalk, oh and none of the programs can be combined. Spaghetti and meatballs is one of my favorite dishes to make at home. It is quick and easy to prepare and there is usually plenty left over for lunch the next day. A simple way to lighten this traditional dish is to use turkey for your protein. Turkey meatballs are delicious and just as easy to make. Ingredients 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 cloves garlic, minced 5 cups canned crushed tomatoes 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper 1 large egg 1/3 cup milk 1 white onion, finely chopped 1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs 1/2 cup freshly grated Asiago or Parmesan cheese, plus…

It was fun to visit Minneapolis again. What I remembered from my childhood visits to the Midwest was gone and replaced with a hip city that seemed like a downright fun place to live. Minneapolis is a burgeoning tech hub that has the feel of Austin, Texas or Portland, Oregon, complete with fantastic restaurants and plenty of things to do in the urban center. Number of Players: Single or Multiplayer. If you choose multiplayer, you and a friend can race to the end of your obstacle course, or the two of you can work together, using puzzles to advance. Festival of Fantasy Parade. What child doesn’t love a good parade? • 7 Things You Should NEVER Do on Walt Disney World’s Kilimanjaro Safaris

    Melissa
    27 Aug 2015 | 8:17 pm
My family loves the Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom. Because the animals are “free” to roam (within limits), you get a somewhat different experience each time you ride. Most of our experiences have been wonderful, with the guides being informative and often somewhat funny. Except one time. On one trip we learned ALL THE RULES from our guide (who we refer to now as the Safari Nazi) over and over again. Let me enlighten you, in case you were wondering what behavior is acceptable. Trust me; I am well acquainted at this point… 7. Keep Your Arms In:Every theme park rider is…
