For many families, it is not possible to take a big vacation every year. It seems that each summer the cost of airfare, hotels, gas, and food goes up and up. This means that a lot of families spend several years saving up for a big blow-out vacation. Often this vacation means a trip to […]

Neither Andy nor I had ever been to a Disney park (land or world) back in the States, so we were pretty excited by the prospect of taking G to Disneyland in Paris.  We put off telling her why we were going to Paris for a long time.  I wasn’t sure that she would know that Disneyland actually was, but she knows what Disney is and I didn’t want to have to deal with her asking every day if today was Disney day (or something along those lines). But that MO resulted in this: “Blah, Paris”?!  Nope, I don’t think so. So the weekend before our trip, we told her that…

  • Disneyland Paris probed for charging Brits and Germans more than the French

    Michal Addady
    29 Jul 2015 | 1:03 pm
Following consumer complaints about the amusement park’s price discrepancies, Disneyland Paris is facing an investigation by the European Commission and French authorities. The park has been accused of charging customers more based on their country of origin. The Financial Times reports that French customers paid €1,346 ($1,486), British customers paid €1,870 ($2,065), and German customers paid €2,447 ($2,702), all for the same package. The European Union has ‘single market’ rules in place in order to prevent this type of price discrimination. Disneyland Paris has…

  • Is This America's Last Middle Class Theme Park?

    28 Jul 2015 | 11:25 am
By Robert Niles: With ticket prices rising up to and even over the $100 a day mark for the nation's most popular theme parks, middle class families might be wondering if they can how much longer they will be able to afford to visit theme parks. At first glance, the choice seems stark: Find some sort of package that makes a visit to one of the Disney or Universal resorts an affordable deal, or settle for a shorter trip to a regional amusement park. While going for a less popular park isn't a bad deal for roller coaster fans — heck, most coaster fans would prefer a visit to a great iron park…

  • DVC FAQ, Part 5: Should You Buy DVC Points New or 'Used'?

    26 Jul 2015 | 6:51 pm
By Don Jones: One question folks run into a lot when considering a DVC purchase is, "do I buy direct from Disney, or go to the huge resale market where prices are lower?"In the past, this question had a pretty simple answer: go resale, unless you want your home resort to be one of the newer properties for which only Disney has points.Nowadays, it's a more complex discussion. Yes, if you want your home resort, and its extra booking window, to be at one of the newer resorts, then the resale market isn't usually an option, and so you'll buy right from Disney. But these days, resale points come…

  • True Love at the Park: Walt and Lillian

    Dave DeCaro
    28 Jul 2015 | 4:00 am
I love this photo of Walt with his beloved wife, Lillian. But…it seems as if it was not actually shot at the Park. Something about the way it is lit and staged, it seems as if Walt & Lillian were actually shot elsewhere and then spliced in. I could be wrong. It happens every now and then. Either way, it's a beauty of the couple sitting in a Horseless Carriage with the Castle in the background.More vintage Disneyland photos at my main website.Follow my Daveland updates on Twitter and view my most recent photos on Flickr.

One of the highlights of the 60th Anniversary at Disneyland have been the revitalized windows of the Main Street Emporium. The two scenes that have been installed so far are for Peter Pan and Cinderella. The Peter Pan scenes give a nice teaser to the attraction in Fantasyland. The star thingy in the background still baffles me; it just doesn't seem to fit. I will need to get out the original animated film to see how it matches.Plenty of detail to keep the eye busy as you marvel over the miniature scenes and figures.Nana the dog is not receiving much benefit from Tinker Bell's pixie dust since…

I know I am in the minority, but I was not as "wowed" as I thought I would be when I took a spin on the newly refurbished Peter Pan's Flight. I can't quite put my finger on it, but unlike the Alice dark ride, this one just doesn't seem to have integrated the new digital effects as well. It's cool to see the pixie dust effect in the nursery, but it now makes the static nature of the children seem odd.I did like how it now appears that you are following Tinker Bell's light as you soar over London. What I didn't like was how bright all of the tiny lights below seemed. For whatever reason, it…

    28 Jul 2015 | 6:20 am

  • Signs Along the Walkway

    27 Jul 2015 | 6:46 am
In the early years of Disneyland, the walkway between Frontierland and Adventureland featured minimal theming and landscaping. The walkway led to a small bridge over a stream that connected the Jungle River Cruise with the Rivers of America. In order to advertise the new attractions, Disneyland used small signs as well as a large cloth banner promoting the new Tom Sawyer Island, Keel Boats, and the War Canoe. In the background is the Chicken Plantation restaurant.
  • Souvenir Friday- Freedomland Employee ID Badge

    24 Jul 2015 | 7:10 am
Today's post features a very rare employee ID badge for Freedomland. The theme park was located in the New York City borough of the Bronx and was built by C.V. Wood. Wood was originally one of Walt Disney's closest employees who built Disneyland until he was fired by Walt. Wood then went on to create other theme parks similar to Disneyland across the United States. The parks include Magic Mountain in Denver, Pleasure Island in Massachusetts and Freedomland. In this case, the ID badge even resembles the early Disneyland ID badges.
  • To Adventureland

    23 Jul 2015 | 5:26 am
A nice view of the signpost for Adventureland in 1957. Disneyland during this time period used lots of these multiple sign posts listing the various attractions in each land. This sign extols what a guest would see when riding the Jungle River Cruise. On the left hand side are attraction posters to add color to the scene. The white picket fence seems a little incongruous.

A long time ago, I thought I would try to scan a whole bunch of vintage Disneyland Viewmaster reels, or at least the most interesting frames from those reels. I made it through most (but not all) of my Main Street packets before I started to go crazy! So... that project is on the back burner until further notice. But I still have some scans that might be fun for you to look at; that way you don't have to spend the time (years) and money (lots!) that I spent acquiring my collection. • Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln - Gate Handout, 1965

    29 Jul 2015 | 12:01 am
It's time for another fun piece of Disneyland paper ephemera! In this case it is a flyer, given to each guest as they passed through the gates of the park (along with their complimentary INA guidebook). This is from 1965, when "Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln" was still playing to amazed crowds at the New York World's Fair; Walt seemed to be in a particular hurry to show off his Audio-Animatronic triumph at Disneyland... Mr. Lincoln debuted on July 18th of 1965 - the tenth anniversary of the day that the general public was admitted to the park. I have always wondered where this show would have…
  • Nice Walt Disney World, November 1974

    28 Jul 2015 | 12:01 am
Here are more pictures from The Magic Kingdom in Florida....This first one is similar to another that we saw not long ago; it was taken in the morning, obviously before guests were allowed in, which gives us a great Edward Hopper-esque view of a deserted amusement park. I see a single cast member in the middle of the street, way down toward the castle! Our photographer hot-footed it over to Adventureland to see the still-new "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction, which had opened only about a year earlier. It's so weird to see no people around! This image is a little bit to the right of the…
  • Circarama Theater & Telstar

    27 Jul 2015 | 12:01 am
There's only one picture today; but it's a pretty nice one. From the legendary stash of Instamatics comes this nice shot of the Clock of the World, with the wonderful "Circarama Theater" (home of "America the Beautiful") in the background. The "Bell System" logo makes me happy, for no logical reason. It's hard to ignore that strange thing protruding from the top of the building; it is a model of "Telstar",  an early communications satellite that Bell Labs helped to build. Actually, it resembles both "Telstar 1" and "Telstar 2", launched in 1962 and 1963 respectively. They are still in…

I admit it... today's snapshots are pretty snooze-worthy. But it's Sunday... the day with the least-amount of readers. Where do you all go? This one is almost too mundane to write about! Three nice folks take a break on a bench at the entrance to Tomorrowland, next to the swirly flowers (designed, as it turns out, by Rolly Crump). Look at that other photographer, he thinks he is a great fashion photographer. "Come on, work it baby! Yeah!".Why take one boring photo when you can take two?

I've read a lot about people being scammed by third party ticket sellers on craigslist but I've never seen a real explanation on how they can even pull that off. It usually says something along the lines of "will meet at main gate" so if they're meeting people there and selling fake tickets or something how can they get away with it? Does anybody have an explanation. On how these scammers actually pull this off because it seems pretty easy for them to be caught

  • I'm Going to Disneyland

    Liz Voss
    29 Jul 2015 | 2:13 pm
Neither Andy nor I had ever been to a Disney park (land or world) back in the States, so we were pretty excited by the prospect of taking G to Disneyland in Paris.  We put off telling her why we were going to Paris for a long time.  I wasn’t sure that she would know that Disneyland actually was, but she knows what Disney is and I didn’t want to have to deal with her asking every day if today was Disney day (or something along those lines). But that MO resulted in this: “Blah, Paris”?!  Nope, I don’t think so. So the weekend before our trip, we told her that…
  • Disneyland Paris is charging hundreds of euros more to non-French speakers

    29 Jul 2015 | 2:13 pm
In the land where dreams come true, it costs more to speak English. Disneyland Paris, the only Disney park outside North America or Asia, is currently under investigation for charging European visitors more or less depending on where they come from, a practice that would violate rules set by the European Commission. Prices on the Disneyland Paris website can vary wildly according to customers’ country of origin—according to Quartz’s own search on the site, a three-night stay in September at the theme park’s Hotel Cheyenne is likely to set a French person back about…
  • Lost in Space - Cancelled Attractions of Discoveryland

    29 Jul 2015 | 12:07 pm
Despite being only 23 years old, Disneyland Paris has a very rich history of forgotten and cancelled ‘future’ attractions which never saw the light of day. Many fans will already be fully aware of the once planned Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast attractions in Fantasyland, while other eagle eyed guests may notice how a certain gap in WDS would perfectly fit a sound stage attraction featuring a much loved comedian. These tropes of trivia though are very much wide spread and popular within the bask of DLP online information, unlike what I stumbled upon very recently. Last…
  • It Costs More To Make Germans Happy

    Hermann Observer

At the happiest place on earth, I mean. When it’s on French earth, that is. French visitors pay €1,346 (£950) for a premium package, significantly less that the €1,870 (£1,320) Disneyland charges British visitors – and more than €1,000 (£706) less than the €2,447 (£1727) bill handed to Germans. I can understand that, sort of. Americans still do get in for free though, right? Die EU-Kommission geht Vorwürfen nach, dass der Vergnügungspark Disneyland Paris Besucher aus Deutschland und anderen Ländern wegen ihrer Herkunft benachteiligt.
  • European Union Investigates Claims Disneyland Paris Charges Different Prices According To Where Customer Lives

    Laura Northrup

(Sean MacEntee) In European Union member states, consumers aren’t supposed to be charged differently for products or services depending on where they live. Yet visitors to the happiest place accessible by Paris commuter rail, Disneyland Paris, have complained to the European Commission that the resort charges people differently according to where they’re from. The items in question are vacation packages, not just regular old tickets to the park itself. The Financial Times provided the example of a premium package, for which travelers from other parts of France were charged…

The Disneyland Resort has gone all out for Disneyland’s Diamond Celebration.  Special decor, special merchandise, and most importantly, special food! On a recent visit to Plaza Inn, I noticed an intriguing dessert that I had to try, Diamond Celebration Chocolate Cake.  Honestly, I bought this out of curiosity because it sounded like a bizarre mix of flavors to me. Diamond Celebration Chocolate Cake Description The description alone seemed crazy: Chocolate Cake layered with Passion Fruit, Mango & Banana Mousse, Apricot Compote and smothered with a Milk Chocolate Caramel Ganache and…

Wow! I anticipated that some of the merchandise for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival would be better-than-average, considering that 2015 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Festival. But I can’t say I was expecting all of this! Disney has provided a sneak peek at some of the items on tap for the celebration… and you may want to settle in, my friends, because there is LOTS of it. • The Disneyland Difference

    Suzannah Mitchell
    17 Jul 2015 | 12:35 pm
I’ve wanted to write a post with this title since my first visit to Disneyland in 2011. I will probably still write about the different types of Disneyland differences in future posts, but today, it’s all about the intangible. The date of my first visit is actually embarrassing to admit – a lifelong Disney fan such as myself only visiting the original park that started it all, just 4 short years ago. And yet, I feel such love and devotion to this place, it’s almost as if I’ve now edited it into my childhood memories and have meshed its history with my own.

    2 Jul 2015 | 11:18 am
The Disney park currently known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been the much maligned “not-a-full-day-park” for years and years now. It usually comes in 3rd or 4th place, depending on whether the person choosing enjoys Disney’s Animal Kingdom or not. I have personally defended Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the past, based on the memories and the hope it once held, and the potential future I thought it could enjoy. However, as of late, much like the former EPCOT Center, DHS has been slowly cannibalizing itself in the name of “progress” and throwing…

Dick Van Dyke and the Vantastix at D23’s Destination D I saw this on Facebook, and knew I wanted to share this happy video (and great song) here with everyone. As a life-long Disney fan, I think we’d all like to think this is just how Dick Van Dyke is on a daily basis (maybe without the live band, but you get the idea). Some people are just born happy and what makes them happiest, is spreading joy to others. I was lucky enough to see Dick Van Dyke perform at D23’s Destination D a few years back (he was at the 2011 D23 Expo also but I wasn’t able to get in to see him!)…

To a three-year-old, there is hardly a sane way to meet a Disney villain. I would know, as one of the glaring memories from one of my earliest Disney trips is the Big Bad Wolf’s terrifying face leaning down for a hug. This was not ok. I mean, what was I supposed to think? He’s portrayed as a bad guy in his movie. He’s portrayed as a bad guy in the shows I had seen in the park. Big Bad Wolf = GET AWAY FROM ME. How do you explain that he’s not going to hurt me when everything I’ve associated him with contradicts that promise? So, as the vintage Disney villain…

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is one of my favorite Disney movies for many reasons. First of all, it is the first feature length animated film… ever. Walt and the animators put so much hard work and creativity into it, the movie was a revolutionary creation! Also, it’s a musical. If you didn’t know already, I love musicals, AND not to mention, Snow White is my second favorite princess. So you can only imagine how cool it is for me to be playing Snow herself. I was recently cast in a production of a retelling of Snow White. It’s in a way, a parody, and I am…

Mouse Chat Disney Radio – The BOATHOUSE at Disney World Reviewed Disney Springs Boathouse Review. Chris drove down to Walt Disney World to try the new boat house restaurant at Disney Springs.  The photos of this restaurant look amazing.  I am sure you have seen the aqua cars that start out on the shore and then cruise in the lake area.  Those cars also look like loads of fun.  We priced out the aqua cars and they are $100 for a 20 minute ride.  That price was out of our budget so we don’t have a review for the cars for you.  Instead Chris headed into The Boat House for…

  • Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Russell Wilson Pulls a Boeing 737-800 in Record Time

    Dan
    28 Jul 2015 | 4:52 pm
I thought Alaska Airlines was joking when they said Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson would pull a Boeing 737-800 a distance of 25 feet. Loaded with fuel, the aircraft weighs about 135,000 pounds. But the feat of strength was for a good cause – a national initiative dedicated to ending childhood cancer. Alaska Airlines invited me to join them at Boeing Field to witness this unique event. The weather was perfect and the stands were filled with spectators who were cheering on “Team Russell,” led by Russell Wilson, and “Team Joel,” led by actor/comedian Joel…

  • Behind the Scenes: Learning The Tradition of Italian Flag Throwing at Epcot

    30 Jul 2015 | 5:00 am
Sbandieratori Di Sansepolcro, or “the flag throwers of Sansepolcro,” are an amazing new addition to the entertainment lineup at Epcot. Flag throwing is a tradition that dates back several centuries in Italy – it started first as something one would see during war, as a village or city would try to protect their flag during battle. In the decades since, flag throwing has evolved into a form of performance art, and many Italian towns still have their own flag throwing troupes. I recently went behind-the-scenes to meet the performers of Sbandieratori Di Sansepolcro, and I was fascinated to…

Let’s be real here, the School Bread from Kringla Bakeri og Kafe is overrated. Yeah, I know all the other food blogs overhype this treat, but come on, is it really that good? Is it really that incredible? I don’t think so. Actually I truly dislike it. Scratch that, I hate it. (Yeah I said it, fight me!) Sure it looks delicious. But once you take a bite, it’s pretty darn dry. The cream on top and inside is pretty good, but it’s not life changing. You won’t cry tears of pure satisfaction for every bite you take.
