Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

At the end of August I spent 5 days and 4 nights at Disneyland Paris. If you know me you will be aware that I am a massive Disney fan (I’ve been to Disneyland Paris twice before and Disney World in Orlando once) so I was super excited about this trip. Disneyland is so much more than a theme park, (and as I suffer from quite bad motion sickness I don’t even go on the really big rides – or the teacups, they’re lethal), its about escaping the stress and worries of the real world and entering a world of joy and celebration. Yes, I know it sounds cheesy but Disney really…

The best theme park playgrounds go far beyond your local park's jungle gym to create well-themed environments where kids can not only climb, slide, and run around, but to become characters in a setting that no local park or school playground can match. Today, we are honoring the top 10 dry playgrounds at top theme parks around the world, as rated by Theme Park Insider readers. (As always, we present our top 10 list as one post, and not as one of those annoying click-hogging…
  • Review: Knott's Scary Farm's 2014 Halloween Haunt

    28 Sep 2014 | 7:14 pm
By Jacob Sundstrom: Last year, Knott’s Scary Farm tried to think outside the box with Mirror Mirror — it didn’t work. This year, they tried again with Voodoo and Special Ops: Infected. Mission accomplished. This event will always be more fun than it is scary, and that’s not a knock so much as it’s noting Knott’s Scary Farm’s lifestyle choice. They want to be a fun, mostly PG-13 event — and if you get scared now and again, all the better. There’s not the same creeping sense of dread that you get at Halloween Horror Nights, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Knott’s…

Disney's also dropped the mac and cheese burger at the Electric Umbrella in favor of a "French Dip" burger, topped with brisket, crispy onions and Muenster cheese.

Sure, people love stomach-churning thrills, but they love some stomach-busting treats, too!Over the past week, Disney's been hyping some of the seasonal, Halloween-themed treats it has been adding its menus at Walt Disney World and at Disneyland. Ice cream nachos? Apple pie funnel cake? A peanut butter witch cupcake? If you're looking for an exceptionally spooky treat, look to Tokyo DisneySea, which is serving a savory Black Gyoza Bun again this season.Apple pie funnel cake, at Disneyland.

A few colorful shots from April 1958 showing two gals enjoying a leisurely spin around Fantasyland's Motor Boat Cruise. This "B" ticket attraction was about a year old at the time these shots were taken. Note the red trimmed boat on the right is named "Alice."Dig those yacht-club inspired outfits of the cast members!Looks like this could be a Lucy & Ethel situation! Some time between July (image #1) and December of 1961 (image #2), the marquee over Adventureland lost the canoe-paddles that once hung from it. I can only surmise that they provided too much of a temptation for guests trying to yank on them. Again…only a guess. This previously unposted shot from April 1958 gives a better look at the paddles and the head that originally graced the Adventureland sign: Creepy! I was hoping that the lady in the center was a total Disneyland kook and that her dress was a homemade concoction with a Disney-related pattern. No such luck. Disneyland's King Arthur Carrousel typically gets the shaft when I visit Disneyland. Even though it's smack-dab in the middle of Fantasyland, I typically don't pay much attention to it as I rush to get in line for one of the dark rides. Today's post is a tribute to this beauty with a mix of new and old images, some previously unpublished, such as this 1959 shot below. Two images of cast members at Disneyland. The first image is a badly composed photograph with Goofy and children. The kids are shown, but poor Goofy has his head cut off. The guest in the upper right background is having lots of fun. The second image makes up for the bad composition of the first, the second image is a cast member at one of the news stands poses with the kids. Of course my eyes are drawn to the shelves filled with the Marty Sklar Disneyland book, Pirates of the Caribbean guidebook, 1968 wall map, postcards, coloring books, and souvenir slides. Also the cast member is wearing…
  • Natives of Two Different Worlds at Disneyland

    29 Sep 2014 | 6:13 am
Two snapshots of natives as seen from two different attractions. First image shows the natives doing a war dance at their village on the Jungle River Cruise. I have heard several jokes about this, the most common being the natives are dancing the Hokey Pokey, the natives are singing Wimoweh (The Lion Sleep's Tonight) or that someone had locked the bathroom. Next up is a picture of the natives found at the Submarine Voyage. Although a lovely shot of the coral, I believe the photographer was trying to capture a picture of the giant sea bass swimming by.

The training reinforced the stage presence and show for which Disneyland is famous. For those who want to read the training, I posted it several years ago as SOP you're on stage at Disneyland. This is a name tag worn either by a participant or one of the trainers. The graphic is the same as for the training booklet.

On August 3, 1967 (when Disneyland was open from 9 AM to 12 AM and the high was 82 degrees and the low was 66 degrees) the photographer spent some time in Frontierland. First up was a trip on the Mark Twain and a look at the burning settler's cabin with the dead settler. Now the cabin has been renovated and leased out to the river boat baron Mike Fink. Riverfront beach property is very expensive now. Next up was a trip on a Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland. First up is a view of battling elk. Note the other elk are ignoring the two boys as they always wrestle each other at family…

    24 Sep 2014 | 5:53 am
The Jungle River Cruise has fun vignettes featuring animals and sometimes humans interacting. The first image is of the African Veldt featuring a gathering of animals on the grasslands. Most guests now think of the Lion King when they see this vignette. Next up is the trapped safari which just happens to be the next scene on the attraction. This vignette always makes me chuckle even though I have seen it hundreds of times.

  • MEH! - August 1969

    30 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
It's time for some more oddball (and lame?) images from that legendary lot of slides from August, 1961. With all of the buildup, they had better be damn good! (They're good, but not amazing, to be perfectly honest). Anyway, even though today's fall into the "meh" category, they are not complete wastes of time. Can you guess where our photographer was standing when he/she took this picture? Hmmm, where would you have that expanse of lawn, with a train passing close by? I'll give you a hint: it's not the moon.Somebody was getting artsy. "The juxtaposition of this old-fashioned lamp post next to…

Here are two scans from a set of four undated slides; I think they are from the 1980's, though they might be even newer than that.At first I thought that this was a photo of Main Street's Saxophone Quartet. Until I realized that there is a fifth member; so…. quintet. They usually performed olde timey songs from the 1920's and 1930's, but on this particular day they were doing "A Salute to Psychedelia!". They're right in the middle of "White Rabbit", and the groovy little kid is totally digging it, man. What I don't understand is why the White Rabbit isn't there.I am assuming that the…
  • Rejects - Unrejected! January 1965

    28 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
I recently found a batch of 35mm slides from 1966. At first I thought that they were all rejects! Many of them had strange areas of blurriness, as if something got on the lens, was cleaned off (for the occasional clear shot), and then the lens was re-smudged. And a lot of them were just too darn underexposed. Like today's! I have probably officially rejected about half of the lot, but the other half might make for some interesting posts, anyway. Some of the blurred ones almost look deliberately artsy! But today's clearly fall into the "way too dark" category. If you look really hard at…

    27 Sep 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are the last three scans from a lot of 6 slides from Freedomland, USA. See the first three HERE!This first shot was taken from the Old Tucson Mining Company Ore Cars (otherwise known as an aerial tram ride, or "sky ride") as they passed above the train tracks, looking towards the train station that was part of the "San Francisco" area of the park. That train almost, almost looks like the trains at Disneyland, with the old steam locomotive pulling those yellow passenger cars. But it is also pulling three open-air cars that are more or less the equivalent of Disneyland's early "cattle…

What I was trying to say is that today seems like a good day to continue looking at the set of Donruss bubblegum cards from a 1965 set of 66 cards (65 plus "one to grow on"?) - all to celebrate Disneyland's tenth anniversary.Card #41: Aboard brightly canopied launches, Disneyland visitors become explorers on Jungle Cruise.(I guess it was just too hard to write THE Jungle Cruise? • Question Statewide Plastic Bag Ban

    30 Sep 2014 | 6:10 pm
So with the new law going into effect will disneyland no longer be utilizing a plastic bag for souvenir purchases or will guests be forced to purchase a reusable bag? Your thoughts? (I have not researched deeply so don't flame me too hard)
  • Question Say it ain't so! (MHP)

    30 Sep 2014 | 1:15 pm
Hi, all. Last year I went to MHP and was bummed because I didn't think they had Peter and Wendy there...I later found out that they WERE there (even bigger bummer)! I saw something about the parties this year that listed characters you could meet and did not see P+W on the list. Does anyone know if they will be there this year? I was really looking forward to it. :( Are they included in the "Pirate Pals?" Are there any other characters missing from the party this year? (Roger Rabbit?)
  • Question Haunted Mansion Holiday music question

    30 Sep 2014 | 12:05 pm
On the Holiday overlay of Haunted Mansion, in the graveyard they play Christmas carols that sound a bit off. They're supposed to, of course - but why do they sound so "off?" Are they playing it in a different key or note? My musical education is sadly lacking, but I'd love to better understand what I'm hearing if someone can explain it. Thanks.
  • Idea Expanding DLR with the Angels Stadium

    30 Sep 2014 | 11:59 am
PLEASE SUGGEST WHERE THE MONORAIL ROUTE SHOULD GO. Based on the news that the Angels Stadium may go vacant, I did some arm-chair Imagineering: EPCOT is spliced and rotated to scale into the Angels Stadium: . . Same to Disney's Hollywood Studios into the strawberry field: . . . . Then duplicated Mickey & Friends for both parks. (For Disney's Hollywood Studios, you walk through Anaheim Garden Walk, like Downtown Disney.) . . ALL photos are exactly the same scale. This demonstrates that WDW parks' enormity would fit fine in Anaheim and at low Imagineering cost, depending on how much is…

  • New Book Review: The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis & the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic

    11 Sep 2014 | 5:12 pm
It takes a long time to look through John Canemaker's new book  The Lost Notebook: Herman Schultheis and the Secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic, and it should. Nearly 300 pages are filled with examples of every aspect of Disney's production: drawings, model sheets, camera setups, and hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of how shots were achieved, animators at work, models posing for animators, reference photos of animals and humans, cels, drawings, the Burbank studio being built, "The Reluctant Dragon" live action production, Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio. Numerous examples of…
  • John Canemaker in Los Angeles: Thursday 9/11 at the Central Library, LACMA on Saturday, September 13: Gertie, Fantasia and...SCHULTHEIS!

    7 Sep 2014 | 10:57 pm
It's always an event when John Canemaker comes to Los Angeles-literally. In 2012 he was here to present and moderate a program honoring the work of John and Faith Hubley, a fascinating and wonderful evening.  Now in September we have an embarrassment of riches. This coming Thursday it's a double dose of Canemaker and author and author/librarian Christina Rice, both authors of new books on the enigmatic Herman Schultheis. They'll be reading and signing in downtown's Central Library from 6 to 8pm, and the event is free. Then on Saturday, a triple threat: on Saturday, Sept. 13th,…
  • Women In Animation

This Saturday, March 15, I'm moderating a panel at the Walt Disney Family Museum where I'll be talking with Claire Keane, Lorelay Bove, and Brenda Chapman about their experiences in the animation business, and their lives as animation artists.Last October the museum also asked if I would write an essay for their quarterly on the subject of women in animation, past and present, which follows here.In the 1970s there was one must-have for every aspiring young animator's bookshelf: Christopher Finch's oversized, heavy and beautiful The Art of Walt Disney.  Illustrated books detailing the…

    12 Mar 2014 | 2:12 pm
Is there anyone in animation who isn't excited by the work of Mary Blair?  Oh, probably a few misanthropes or those who go the contrarian route, but Blair's gargantuan reputation grows year after year for good reason. Many have spoken and written about her influence more eloquently than I ever could, but nothing beats seeing the real thing, up close and personal. To this end the Walt Disney Family Museum is opening the largest show to date of Blair's accomplishments both inside and outside animation.  Curated by Oscar-winning animator, writer (and Blair biographer) and NYU professor…

Michael Sporn looking over Richard Williams' shoulder during production of "Raggedy Ann and Andy". Photograph by John Canemaker, from his book.Last weekend, thanks in large part to three consecutive days off, I was finally able to watch a few screeners. One of them was Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises", which I'd been very much looking forward to(happily subtitled instead of dubbed-always the way I prefer to go).  I knew the basics of the story-that it was about the life of the designer of the Japanese Zero fighter plane, Jiro Horikoshi, albeit somewhat fictionalized, and that as a…

    11 Sep 2014 | 5:06 pm
During a visit to Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground a few months back, I was filled with an epic case of nostalgia regarding what our beloved Walt Disney World was like when it opened back in 1971. I instantly wanted to write an article reflecting on my thoughts and how things were way back then. Granted, I wasn’t born then, but a handful of years later, I’d be celebrating my first visit to the Vacation Kingdom of the World. After a more recent visit to celebrate Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue’s 40th anniversary, I was reminded that I really needed…

Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom is a family tradition. I don’t think we’ve missed a party in over 10 years. Of course ten years ago I had a kindergartner and now I’ve got a 15-year-old. Gone are the days of me holding her hand as she trick-or-treated through the candy stations. Now she brings a friend along. We enter the park, get banded and then we see the kids again at midnight for a ride home. What are a couple of parents to do when they get ditched by the kids? • Interview with The Maze Runner’s Blake Cooper!

    30 Sep 2014 | 7:00 am
Recently I had the joy of speaking with a young actor by the name of Blake Cooper. You can currently see Cooper in the movie Maze Runner which is in theatres right now (and it’s quite good too!) We talked about everything from the pressure of playing a character already written and established too what made him fall in love with the book that started it all. This being Blake’s first major motion picture roll he was quite eager to talk about this lovely project and how much fun it was to be a part of something so big. Of all the things that could have been his favorite part of the…

By Brad Huber Back in April, we announced a full day of Disney park coverage around the globe. I was lucky enough to get assigned to Disneyland Paris, aka “that place you go for a day when you need a break from Paris.” The park formerly known as Euro Disney gets a bad rap for its re-themed off-the-shelf carnival rides and boring cuisine (in a country known for inventing fine dining). But it also receives a ton of praise for having more exciting versions of other Disney Park roller coasters, like Space Mountain. I’ve also heard great things about the new Ratatouille ride. It…

I am made so completely anxious and nervous by any type of crowd participation, that the fear of being told to get my elbows off the table, or to clear my plate has kept me away from this DHS mainstay. Even when I heard tell of vegan meatballs on the menu, I kept my distance to avoid any playful interaction that might await me. • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Ride Review

    Carrie
    23 Sep 2014 | 10:00 am
The one thing Patrick absolutely had to do on our August trip to Walt Disney World was ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. When we realized his schedule only allowed us to try for it on a Saturday morning, we bit the bullet and made an early reservation at Crystal Palace for breakfast in order to get as close as we could to the rope before it dropped. (Do not fear for our immortal souls: They hold guests who are already in the park near Cosmic Ray’s until the guests at the gate have been escorted to that spot, so everyone gets the same shot at speed-walking toward the Mine Train.)…
  • Thoughts on the New Walt Disney World Experience

    3 Sep 2014 | 9:00 am
I kept saying I wasn’t going to write a report on Patrick’s crazy last-minute work trip to Walt Disney World a few weeks ago because I spent most of my time in the room working too. But when we did have a free moment to explore together, we noticed some pretty striking changes since our last visit, 18 months ago—enough that Patrick has been encouraging me to write about what we thought. (I’ll be doing a separate post on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.) The Re-Learning Curve I am a professional author and editor of guidebooks to the Disney parks, but it took me half a day at…

A couple weeks ago, Patrick was sent to Walt Disney World on a top-secret project, and I got to tag along. (And when I can tell you more about what he was working on, I surely will!) I’m working on a post about all the differences we noticed after an 18-month absence that included the introduction of MyMagic+, but it’s kinda depressing me just writing about it, so here’s something AWESOME we saw instead! Just days before we left, the first photos emerged of the newly remodeled Captain Cook’s counter-service restaurant at the Polynesian (Village) Resort. I immediately…
  • Club 33 As It Used To Be: A Photo Tour

    Carrie
    31 Jul 2014 | 9:00 am
We’ve had a handful of opportunities to visit Club 33 over the years, and though I’ve had the best intentions of writing up a trip report each time, I’ve just never gotten around to it. Memorable experiences include my Birthday No. 33 at Club 33, a Ryman Arts Foundation breakfast, and the time Patrick arrived with food poisoning, tossed his cookies into the lobby wastebasket, and still had to pay $90 for a meal he didn’t get. But most of my reports would have been about the same: celebrating some milestone, drooling over the historical details, snarking about the Blue…
  • Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination

    Carrie
    9 Jul 2014 | 10:00 am
My absolute favorite part of the Walt Disney Family Museum is their ginormous “Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination” model in the last room. I think it might be Patrick’s too, because he took more than a hundred photos of it on our visit last month. If I stick all of these in the already-picture-packed next installment of my Walt Disney Family Museum Weekend Getaway trip report, it might break your eyeballs. So here is a separate post devoted entirely to Patrick’s photo tour of that 12-foot model. Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination was designed to capture his…

Whether you are just driving your children to school or taking a long road trip, you want a family vehicle that is safe, reliable, and comfortable. I am pretty sure this is why most families have either an SUV or a Minivan in the driveway. You need extra space for the family and for all of the stuff we like to bring along. When you are a parent, safety becomes the biggest reason why you purchase any vehicle. I know many people who traded in their cars for “something safer” when their first child arrived. The trade off is usually that, while safe and reliable, family vehicles…
