Did you know that today is a special day in Disney history, especially for fans of Mickey Mouse? On this day back in 1928, audiences saw the first test screening of a Mickey Mouse short, which was “Plane Crazy.” People often confuse whether “Plane Crazy” or “Steamboat Willie” was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, but Dave Smith clears this up in his book “Dave Smith’s Disney A-Z,” explaining that “Plane Crazy” was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon produced, but the third released (“Steamboat Willie” was the first released). In “Plane Crazy,” Mickey Mouse and his…

  • Three Years Later: A Look at Disney’s Acquisition of Marvel

    Daniel Ross
    16 May 2012 | 3:19 am
Nearly three years ago, Disney fans and comic book geeks alike did double takes as they looked at the latest news: Disney bought Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. While this was less than Disney spent for PIXAR, there were no previous projects between Disney and Marvel, other than Disney having acquired Stan Lee’s POW Entertainment in 2008. After the success of Marvel’s The Avengers (distributed by Walt Disney Pictures), let’s take a look at who owns the characters and a glimpse at the future:This purchase did come with a lot of tangled red tape, as the rights to many of…

    John Frost
    16 May 2012 | 2:05 am
I’m of the opinion that Downtown Disney is under-utilized as an event space. The Festival of the Masters has a long running success and last year they tried adding a car show. That must have been a success too, because it’s back again this year, even without a freshly released ‘Cars’ movie from Pixar to tie it to (not to say they aren’t trying).Car Masters Weekend is held at Downtown Disney June 2-3, 2012. It celebrates everything “Cars,” in a free, two-day event with a car show presented by Hess Express, plus meet and greets with Lightning McQueen, Mater and…

The two sitcoms that I watch every week are Modern Family and The Office. The shows share their documentary-style filming, but otherwise could not be more different. • Vote of the week: What's the parade you most want to see in Orlando this summer?

    11 May 2012 | 9:52 am
By Robert Niles: With Universal's Superstar Parade debuting this week, let's talk about parades. Many observers don't realize this, but there's a simple logistical reason for top theme parks to run parades in the middle of the afternoon. That's the busiest time of day at a theme park - even the late-comers have arrived by that point and few of the earliest-arriving guests have left for the day. So the park is packed. Having a parade at that time helps draw visitors away from crowded queues, making wait times a little more manageable during the worst part of the day. The guests who opt for the…

Finally getting back to my TPE (anyone remember what that stands for?) series, today's Tomorrowland attraction that I'd love to go back in time to enjoy is the Flying Saucers. It was the last attraction to open in the “original” Tomorrowland. From August 6, 1961–August 5, 1966 The Flying Saucers floated in a 16,000 sq. ft. arena, and were designed to hold one large guest or two small ones, with 16 saucers flying at once while the other 16 were being loaded. As the ride began, air valves pushed the saucer upward so that it was floating just inches above the ground. Guests shifted their…

The kiddie chairs in the lobby were Mar-size, but the sofas were JUST RIGHT (wake-up Mar - we have many things to see & photograph!). Just to have a stress-free morning with no responsibilities made Mar very happy. There was a man talking on the phone and using his laptop in front of…

Michaela & Matt, 2/3 of the Tours Departing Daily team took a brief break from shooting and posed near the pool. Right behind light fixtures comes hotel hallways. As you can tell by the absence of people, it was pretty late at night when we were taking photos. During the day, this type of shot devoid of guests would be next to impossible. Here Michaela is lining up a shot: ...and the finished product: Be sure to check out their photo blog; they…

    15 May 2012 | 9:34 am
Three views of Fantasyland from October 1962. First up is a shot of Sleeping Beauty Castle standing guard as the entrance to this section of the park. As one of the most photographed parts of the park, the Castle looks awful nice in this image with all the folks in front of the attraction. Next up is a you are riding the Carrousel image with the two youngster dressed dapper for all you Dapper Days fans. Last image is of Mad Hatter. I like the look of the girl walking by...why is this guy blocking my way? I need to get to Peter Pan!

  • Snapshots from New York World's Fair 1964

    12 May 2012 | 3:26 pm
A group of 4 interesting snapshots from the World's Fair in 1964 at New York. First up is a shot of the Unisphere through the Court of Nations. Next up is a shot taken from the roof of the Kodak Pavilion with the Brass Rail on the left and the Pepsi Cola it's a small world attraction on the right. Next up is a shot of the Fair from the train station. Final image is the Unisphere off in the distance. One thing that surprises me about this fair is the amount of plants and greenery seen in the photographs.
  • Souvenir Friday- Creating a Fairyland by Randal J. Metz and Tony Jonick

    11 May 2012 | 8:05 am
Today's Souvenir Friday is a little different. This is a modern book on the history of one of the classic theme parks with the theme of Fairy Tales. Published by Running Rabbit press and sponsored by the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club. The history is very thorough and well illustrated. If you are a fan of this style of park, this is a history to own with behind the scenes and construction images. I could not find the book online and I believe it is only available from Children's Fairyland in Oakland. (I received my copy for the use of one of my images in the book.) It is a book worth searching…

With "The Avengers" ready to pass a billion dollars by the end of the weekend Marvel Studios has become an amazingly successful studio...The only other current studio with that track record is the Lamp. Pixar, is similar and different at the same time, but the success model of control, and the autonomy to create their own projects is something that they share. To be fair, they both have different content: Pixar creates original properties that become pop-culture stories and Marvel takes pop-culture properties and creates original stories. Both are well written and follow a focused plan for…

Fifties here it comes...So with Brad Bird successfully transitioning to live-action we can look forward to another...But it won't be his labor of love, "1906" about the San Francisco earthquake. Instead it will be about a supernatural event, that is also named after a year, "1952."According to the trades, Bird will board the Walt Disney Pictures' film from a script by Damon Lindelof which is believed to be a tentpole film. The story is described as secret, but sci-fi or paranormal. It makes me wonder if it has something to do with the year 1952 or Fifties Era which Brad Bird captured so…

Welcome to Magazine Monday.  Today were going back to February 20, 1965 and half way around the world for Sydney Australia's TV Week.  Looks like the folks down under we very excited about our very own Doris Day.This "Crotchety Walt Disney" article appears to be a retread of the November 4, 1964 edition of the Saturday Evening Post, which I posted back in January 2009 (link). Although the Post left off the "Crotchety" part of the title!Wow, I hope you like channel 3 and 5, because those are you only two choices, yes that's an entire days listings on two pages! For…

Well, Whittles still creeps me out.Look closely at this 1969 map compared to the 1970 map shown below it.  The obvious difference is the "log Ride" under construction, but there's other subtle changes as well, can you find them all?1970 Map from the "Knott's Map Comparison" post.

  • Mouse Moments

    1 May 2012 | 9:41 pm
I don't usually buy Disneyland Park guides. After all, how much can you add to what's already been said. But, "Mouse Moments" (paperback, 140 pgs) promised that this would be a "humorous guide through Disneyland".I hate errors. I can overlook (barely), typos and grammatical errors, but factual errors drive me crazy. By page nine in "Mouse Moments" errors started to show up. The Jungle Cruise does not offer FastPass and it never has. And then I spotted another FastPass error. The author states that Peter Pan offers FastPass. It also never has. At first, I thought the author used a template for…
  • New Postcard and Folder

    29 Mar 2012 | 12:25 pm
I picked up a couple of new postcards from Disneyland.  The first, is a classic lenticular card that shows off Tink flying above Sleeping Beauty Castle.  The second is actually a postcard folder - 10 interconnected cards that can be separated along the perforated edge.  This folder is just an example of very lazy marketing on Disney's part. Six of the images have already appeared in the sepia tone set that came out several years ago.  Also, the backgrounds of these images are either very vague and/or blurry so that they can not be identified with a specific park.

Finally!  It feels like an eternity that I've been trying to hunt down this Disneyland guide book.  They do pop-up on eBay with regularity, but most of the time they've been beyond my budget. (Most collectors I know have a "cringe point" - that price point they just can't justify.)Since opening day, Disneyland had been cranking out annual guide books.  What makes this book special, is that it wasn't sold in the Parks, but rather, was obtained through a mailer in LOOK magazines.A couple of things surprised me about this guide book. One was the size.  I was expecting a book…

    15 May 2012 | 2:01 am
Today I am posting the last few remaining slides of the Queen Mary from my collection!Let's start with this fun shot of a 1985 billboard, featuring a rebus. Can you possibly crack the code?!Here's a view from the water... I wonder if the photographer was taking a harbor tour. When I win the lottery I'm going to buy an old ocean liner and convert it into a seaside home. I'll wear full captain's regalia all the times (like Captain Bligh), of course. Up on deck, two girls pose in the bright Southern California sunshine. Wonder what those cylindrical things are sticking up in the foreground?
  • Special Guest Photos!

    14 May 2012 | 2:01 am
Today's photos are from the collection of a GDB reader who goes by the pseudonym of Alonzo P. Hawk! He and his family visited Disneyland in the summer of 1967 and he recently found these three images; lucky for us, he scanned them and is sharing them with all of us to enjoy. There's Alonzo and his two sisters, posing in front of the iconic Mickey flower portrait (looks like the flowers need a few weeks to bloom); notice the Santa Fe logo on the train station... it just belongs there! So does the Kalamazoo hand car. Also, the population is listed at 60 million... wow! (How often was that sign…
  • The Matterhorn, June 1969

    13 May 2012 | 2:01 am
I wish I had a dime for every photo I had that featured the mighty Matterhorn. No wait, I wish I had $100 for every photo of the Matterhorn. There, that's better! If you're going to make a wish, you might as well do it right. Anyway, here is a colorful view taken from the Fantasyland side. I think we're technically still in Fantasyland here, even though the Monorail track runs right in front of us. Monorails are a kind of fantasy I guess, with a few rare exceptions.

Fatigue is a common complaint these days what with busy schedules, lack of proper nutrition, exercise, and rest, among the many other demands we place on our bodies. Fatigue is a normal result of physical activity, but other factors can play a major role in developing symptoms of fatigue. Mental stress, depression, boredom, illness and many other environmental conditions can cause fatigue, which can result in our inability to function at a level of normal activity. To combat the effects of fatigue, many individuals reach for the coffee pot, or, more common today, energy drinks. Think of the…

Riding the monorail from the Contemporary to Epcot was magical in that in a short ride you could be from point A to point B in a short amount of time. I was thinking of pros and cons to discuss of connecting DAK to its sister parks. The park is extremely isolated and distinct from the others... 3 May 2012 | 5:26 pm
If you’re worried about not understanding the plot line in “Marvel’s The Avengers” without seeing all of the precursor films…DON’T! That was my main concern when I pre-screened the film recently.  The only film I had seen prior was “Iron Man”  I’m happy to report that I had no trouble following along with the film. I attended the screening with my tween daughter and found it to be appropriate for her age group. This, of course is a matter of opinion. If your child is sensitive to any sort of violence you may want to refrain.  We shared…

Let’s Make A Deal is a game show that started in 1963 hosted by Monty Hall and was brought back to television revamped and refurbished in 2009 hosted by Wayne Brady. It was a game of luck-you get a choice between money or a box or a curtain or something else. Each object behind a curtain, under a box, etc. can be something cool or a zonk, which is an object that isn’t so special. Zonks have included a live llama and a refrigerator full of rotten food. Now, I loved Whose Line Is It Anyway and I still do, so imagine…

  • Disney Dreams we never saw…Part1

    Bill I. (NDH#35)
    7 May 2012 | 10:30 pm
We all know and love the Disney Parks, movies, characters, and all the dreams that Walt left us. But there were many ideas and concepts that Walt and his Imagineers conceived over the years that never made it past the drawing board. I want to explore some of these dreams that we never could experience, but let’s take a quick look back at how Disneyland came about. Walt Disney was always a go-getter and workaholic. He immersed himself completely in everything he did, which is why his product is the standard everyone else tries to copy. He always believed in giving the public more than they…

But many do not know that Mickey has two nephews, Morty and Ferdie Fieldmouse. As with other nieces and nephews in the Mouse family, there were different names along the way. In the Disney children’s books (pre-WWII) they were called Morty and…

I recently stumbled upon a Youtube video of the late, great Karen Carpenter. I’ve known her my entire life as a sultry smooth alto, able to milk a beautifully romantic lyric and sing unique multi-layered harmonies with her brother Richard. I’d always known she was a drummer, but not until I watched this video compilation did I realize that she was not only a competent pop drummer, but a virtuoso percussionist. Then I read the liner notes that accompanied the video, and ‘lo and behold who was the kit drummer when Karen would step out from behind her own to sing to the crowd?

For this time lapse video, we used two cameras on opposite sides of the Matterhorn in Disneyland park. One camera was placed on top of Tomorrowland Terrace and the other was placed on top of Pinocchio’s Daring Journey in Fantasyland. The scaffolding was 20 levels high and, once installed, the top level was the highest point in the park. Netting around the perimeter was specifically chosen as a medium gray color by Imagineer Kim Irvine so the mountain would look more like it was shrouded in a fog bank or cloud. The whole rig went up in 15 work days and came down progressively as the paint…

Question: We are thinking of going in February, I have an 11 year old and 7 year old daughter both fair skinned like myself what are your thoughts? Answer: I’m joining you and your kids in the fair-skinned tribe, so I understand the risks of being outside so much in the sun. However, you’ve picked a great time to go, weather wise (and crowd wise actually), so you won’t need to worry about it too much. For first time visitors, these passes, which enable to you access rides via a shorter queue at Disney and Universal, can be pretty confusing given that there are different options and they work differently in the two resorts, so I figured I’d give you the low down on how these work. Disney’s FASTPASS Is it worth it? YES – IT IS FREE!! Those that have had experience with Universal, or other parks paid-for fast-tracking passes, tend to discount the Disney FASTPASS simply because they aren’t aware that it is a free to use system, and that you don’t need…
  • Coral Reef Review

    9 Mar 2012 | 12:00 pm
Coral Reef is located in The Seas in Future World at Epcot. It is a restaurant we’ve been to many times before and always make a point of visiting on each trip. Despite there being lots of really good restaurants in Epcot, it really is one of our favourites. (Apologies for the awful photos in this review!) The restaurant is unique as one entire stretch of very large wall is glass, looking out onto the Seas aquarium. We weren’t so lucky this time, but on our last trip we were seated right next to the tank and it really was incredible having the fish float right by you as you ate.

In ‘took them long enough’ news, according to wdwmagic, Sounds Dangerous has officially been removed from park maps at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  The area that formerly held the attraction is now simply called ABC Sound Studio.  No attraction has been named to replace the seasonal Sounds Dangerous, but it would appear as though Drew Carey will no longer be bumbling through the dark any longer.  (It also means that there’s one killer nap location gone too!)  For those visiting during Star Wars Weekends, this area will be used as a sign up location for the various…

We have seen Night Ranger and Roger Hodgson at Eat to the Beat as well as Herman’s Hermits at the Flower Power Concert Series. My question for today is did you ever attended any of these concert series at Epcot? If so, who did you see? Was it crowded? Was the concert enjoyable? Are you the type that returns every year for a specific concert series? Tell us YOUR experience at the Epcot concert series!

Today I want to take a look at Animal Kingdom(AK). A lot of people I talk with think that is not Disney at its best. While I do enjoy going here, if we have to cut visiting AK on our trip I am not upset. I like Kilimanjaro Safaris Expedition and Kali Rapids; of course the girls love Expedition Everest. What bothers me about Animal Kingdom (AK) is I feel it is very congested especially when you enter the park, it makes me feel claustrophobic! I wish it had more feel of an open to it. That brings me to my question; what would you change about Animal Kingdom? Do you love it the way it is? Or…

I thought I'd share this photo I took back in 1992, announcing the upcoming spectacular. Not too long ago, Jack Lindquist shared with me some of his memories from when he was president of Disneyland during the creation of the spectacular"About two months before the opening we had no name for the new show that was to debut on the Rivers of America in Frontierland. Michael Eisner was aware of this predicament and after lunch at the studio one Friday we met in his office to try to come up with a title. We…

    7 May 2012 | 2:00 am
One of the things I've always loved about the Disney parks is the attention to detail and how it can really touch all of your senses. From the beautiful artistic details to view, to the sweet smells intentionally blown out of the Candy Palace. Here's one for your ears: Did you know that you can hear sounds from some of the windows on Main Street at Disneyland? If you're going to use a locker or buy an ice cream at the Main Street Cone Shop, you just might hear some happenings emanating from the windows around you. Some musical sessions occurring behind the Piano Lessons window or a…

  • Review: Behind the Seeds Tour

    Ami Brundick-Eller
    15 May 2012 | 9:29 am
I am the woman all plants fear. My thumb is a terrible shade of brown.  Seriously, I think if I bumped it on something dust would fly, begging for water.  Ferns survived the ice age, but they can’t survive one season on my front porch. It’s a crying shame because I absolutely adore gardens!  Especially the ones that sprawl on the landscape, wild and wonderfully beautiful, looking like they have been there forever.  I could just weep over the splendor of an English Garden or a tropical panorama with its hues of orange and red.  Then there is the glory of the…
