All Disney fans and historians know that Walt Disney had made more innovations and firsts in animation than most. Walt was above nothing else, an innovator, dreamer and many consider him a seer, who seemed to know what would work, amid all his naysayers, including his own partner and brother Roy and wife, Lillian. Walt and his team’s contributions to animation and the film industry are still heralded today. The first that comes to mind is “Steamboat Willie” the first synchronized sound cartoon. However, it was not the first. The first publicly shown sound-on-film cartoon was an…

Disney is the world leader in family movies, beginning with the classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937 to the present. And throughout the years he has produced many which stand out among fans and critics alike, but the one animated classic that most consider his “Zenith” is Dumbo, the story of a child (Baby Elephant) who is teased and mocked at because of a physical abnormality (His huge ears) and how he eventually achieved success because of this characteristic, not in spite of it. He had only his mother, Mrs. Jumbo and a sympathetic mouse named Timothy for support.

After much time behind the construction walls, Disney finally unveiled the newly rehabbed area known as the “Hub” This central location in the middle of the Magic Kingdom was the brainchild of none other than Walt Disney himself. He wanted an area in his new Disneyland where people can access all of the lands easily, and have a centralized “Meeting Point” that no one could miss. Since, all the Magic Kingdom parks have this feature. However, over the years as the attendances have risen dramatically, the area around the Castle was getting a tab bit crowded.      The fable of the three little pigs has been told for centuries. It has become familiar to millions since Walt Disney re-told the story in his successful 1933 animated cartoon. Walt kept true to the story in most ways, but he toned down some of the violence a bit from the original tale. Because of Walt and his animators, the iconic pigs and their adversary the Big Bad Wolf, not to mention the famous song “Who’s afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” which helped millions of depression-era folks get by have become an integral part of the American culture. So how did the original tale or fable…

Throughout my teenhood, I’ve made many attempts to create a bucket list. But there’s something that I never really took into consideration – what goes on my bucket list should be something I actually really want to do that I want to remember for the rest of my life – not something that sounds cool and impressive. After reading this post by Mali-Koa Hood, I decided that now I’m so close to entering my third decade and have matured since my last attempt, that I should write a bucket list. One that I can stick to with goals I actually want to achieve. Note that…

I love all things Disney, and some people think that’s weird. So I guess the theme of today is being yourself. I don’t apologize for who I am because I just so happen to like myself.

After visiting the upcoming Tomorrowland preview at Disneyland this past weekend, it brought to mind some of the things that truly terrify and mystify my poor naive little mind – how Walt Disney’s genius/ego had eventually turned into a full-fledged God complex toward the end of his life. I can’t wait to see this movie because it looks visually compelling and I’m a huge fan of science fiction. The teal-tracked launched shuttle coaster from Premier is like nothing else in the Williamsburg, Virginia theme park. Evoking the turn-of-the-century stuntmen of Italy, Tempesto rises to a striking 150 feet above the ground, and reaches speeds of 63 miles an hour. Serious roller coaster aficionados would probably call Tempesto a one-trick-pony, but that trick is pretty harrowing. As a contributor…

Mardi Gras World was the brainchild of Blaine Kern, a sign painter who fortuitously created a mural that caught the eye of the captain of a Mardi Gras krewe. One float led to another and over time, he became the city's leading parade creator, working with Rex, Zulu, and all the other legendary krewes. For those not "in the know," a "krewe" is an organization that puts on a parade or ball for the Mardi Gras Carnival season. Visitors at the 1964 New York World's Fair especially loved to take pictures from the observation tower at the New York State pavilion. At 226 feet high, it provided impressive panoramas of the spectacle below. This means that pictures from this vantage point, while cool, are pretty common. Which is why I am putting a bunch of them in one post. The New York State pavilion was located on the southern edge of the Fair; in this first shot, we are looking down, and slightly to the north. The Unisphere is just out of frame to our left (at the end of that grassy boulevard); among the pavilions…

If you're gonna build yourself a Disneyland, you have to have a place to put cars. It's just a fact. Early maps of the park say that there are "100 acres of parking". If only everyone drove unicycles to Disneyland, Walt would have had more room for cool attractions.A strange thing happened... visitors (mostly children, I'm guessing) developed a fondness for this 100 acres of asphalt and automobiles. It represented the first tantalizing steps into Walt's kingdom; there it was, just a few hundred feet away! You could hear the train's bell and whistle, and see the Monorail zooming by - it was…

    26 Apr 2015 | 11:12 pm
Hi Everyone, Back with my next question. As I said in an earlier thread we have only 1 day each in Disneyland and Disneysea. Previously we have had more time in each park and have been able to relax to go on all the rides and more than once for some of them so we haven't worried about a plan too much. The days we will be there will be busy 22nd and 23rd of December. I have tried to search for 1 day plans but can't find them in previous posts even though I have read them. So this question is specifically the order for Disneyland I will come back again another day Disneysea. We are two families…

  • New Tomorrowland Movie Posters and Trailer – Review of the Epcot Sneak Peek

    Suzannah Mitchell
    20 Apr 2015 | 1:58 pm
Over the weekend, an extended preview began on both coasts to showcase Tomorrowland’s May 22nd release. In Epcot, the preview took the place of the much beloved (or much despised from some fans who don’t “get it”) Captain EO starring Michael Jackson. I am firmly in the LOVE category with Captain EO, but I feel like us getting a second chance to enjoy the rag tag band of space misfits led by the infamous Captain EO, and the film itself getting a second life among a new generation was a great gift from Disney to us. I would love if ALL of Epcot could return to its…

I was scrolling through instagram and saw a photo in my feed of the penguin statue in the lobby of the Grand Floridian Villas (it just happened to be the fabulous @rbrent from the Disney Parks Blog!). I was about to double tap to like the picture (who doesn’t love penguins?), when I kept reading and saw that it said “(ps, this is made of chocolate!)” and I stopped and went “huh?” and re-looked at the photo. It was then that I noticed the giant bird cage in the background and said to myself, “oh! that’s the regular Grand Floridian lobby!” What I…

  • Where in Walt Disney World did I park my car?

    Peyton Spear
    24 Apr 2015 | 6:00 am
For this week, Disney Tip #98, let’s head over to the parking lots on Walt Disney World property. One thing that has saved me over the years parking at one of the parks, Downtown Disney, or a water park is taking out my camera. As most of you know, parking at Disney can become very crowded, and by the end of the night, you may have a difficult time remembering where you parked. Before you leave your car and head to wherever you are located, take a picture of the section you are parked in. Each row of parking will have a marker, indicated by a character and a number for that specific…

    17 Apr 2015 | 6:00 am
For this week, Disney Tip #97, lets head on over to Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The summer months are drawing near which means one thing, larger crowds. Typically, Fantasmic! becomes very crowded because most guests see the nighttime spectacular before the park closes. When guest capacity at the show is high, Fantasmic! will open an auxiliary exit at the end of the show. Use this exit because it leads you right to the entrance and exit of the park! The main path in and out of the show is located around the middle of the theater, facing the stage. When exiting, pass this…

Evil tree. Bad Apple? Twenty years ago, all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost–a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave. Stripped of their magical powers, the villains now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world. From a first glance you can tell this book is downright chocked full of evil goodness! The cover has of course none other than an apple with vines growing out of the side and it was the first thing to pull me into the story. We start off the story ten years before the…
  • Disney Finds – Mickey’s Music Mat

    Chip Confer
    26 Apr 2015 | 12:00 pm
I love it when Chip and Co fans share items they think my little ones would like. I got an email this past week from Debbie and she told me I should check out Disney Mickey’s Music Mat. I remember when I was younger and the movie Big with Tom Hanks came out and I had one of those electronic keyboard mats, this looks to be a step up from that as it has a memory game, 8 pre-programmed tunes and has Mickey & Friends on it. I am not sure how old this item is but I was able to locate it on Amazon. Price is under $20 and it comes with batteries so you can play it right out of the box.

    24 Apr 2015 | 2:00 pm
Now that finally the last of the snow has melted away I can finally start thinking about flowers. Not planting them. Oh no. I really like my mani/pedi. I do not have a green thumb in the slightest. But receiving flowers is always special. It is especially special when I get a lovely bouquet on Mother’s Day. I usually do. My husband and my two girls always present me with flowers that speak of their love and gratitude for me. Ahh. It is very sweet. I’m now going to dream about what else could bestow the same sentiment, only with a little (or big) Disney twist. Open letter…

There is perhaps no name on earth that when invoked can release a flood of emotions and memories then that of Walter Elias Disney. Walt Disney World is so much more than restaurants, attractions, characters and shows. For the really sharped-eyed guest and of course, Disney fanatic, there are realms and realms of visual and audio inputs for the senses. If you listen carefully, you’ll always hear a Disney song from the movies or a classic Disney short.

  • Short on Space? A Container Garden is the Way to Grow

    Dan
    24 Apr 2015 | 10:48 am
Have you ever tried a container garden? I have many childhood memories of helping my grandfather pick tomatoes, cucumbers, and radishes from our backyard garden. He grew up on a farm in Minnesota, so the suburban backyard garden was a little reminder of home for him. My grandpa would eat the cherry tomatoes like they were candy or would just brush off the dirt before biting into a radish. We had a decent sized backyard which gave us plenty of room to grow a few things. But as I have ventured out on my own, I have found creative ways to still have a garden, even when I didn’t have the luxury…

Professors should give extra credit to students who manage to complete their homework while on a business trip. I was in San Francisco for the first part of the week and somehow, in the midst of meetings and exchanging business cards, I managed to get all of my homework done. I felt like adding “completed while cruising at 30,000 feet” when I submitted a second paper during my flight home. When you are a student, you rely on your laptop to get things done no matter where you go. Professors don’t care if your dog ate your USB drive, if your laptop battery died, or if you couldn’t find…

You’re getting a tux for the auto show? Why?!?! That was the reaction most of my friends had when I told them that I needed to get a tux for a special event at the Chicago Auto Show. The First Look for Charity is an annual event that routinely raises more than $2 million for 18 Chicago area charities. I was lucky enough to be invited to the event, so I put on my finest rented tux and pretended to be James Bond walking among all those high-end cars. The First Look for Charity event took place just before Valentines Day, so there were a lot of couples and a lot of people wearing red. I…

One of the more interesting perks of my job is a free membership to a swanky gym near my office. In addition to the workout machines, they have a florist, a spa, a couple restaurants, and they will even detail your car while you work out. When you are going to a place like that, it feels a little odd to work out in your old gym shorts and ratty t-shirt. I also don’t want to look terrible if I run a few errands after visiting the gym. I decided to upgrade my look with a few items from the Rhone Apparel spring collection of workout gear. For a top, I picked the Sentry Short Sleeve…

Our latest way to clean up a stinky kid is with Irish Spring Signature Body Wash. For good measure, we also have the Irish Spring bar soap which has a hydrating and exfoliating scrub. It is the perfect way to make even the smelliest kid smell great again. I can remember my own dad using Irish Spring…

  • Poll: Which Epcot Attraction is Your Favorite?

    Brandon Hawkins
    20 Apr 2015 | 8:42 pm
Everyone has a favorite attraction at Epcot, weather it be Journey Into Imagination or Spaceship Earth. I would love to see that entire area in Epcot get a remodel and I would like to see the attraction itself get a new ride system. Maybe…

  • I know there's rides and characters, but is there anything else to do in Disney World?

    25 Apr 2015 | 12:05 pm
So everyone knows that Walt Disney World has a lot of rides, right? And maybe if you’ve never been, you might not realize that they have just as many shows, of all types as they do rides, from stage shows, to animated shows, to animatronic shows, to live action shows.  I am sure you know that there are parades and fireworks to take in and see too. Also, don’t forget the character meetings and photo opportunities! But, is there more? Since we are a family that tries to visit Walt Disney World as much as we can, I like to look for the “other” experiences our family…

  • Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

    6 Apr 2015 | 4:38 pm
A couple of years ago we were at Magic Kingdom and kept noticing people holding cards up at random window.  Some had single cards, some had notebooks full of cards.  Some were families, some were teenagers, some were couples, and some were older men all by themselves. My husband finally couldn't take the curiosity and asked someone what they were playing.  Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.  My card-collecting, game-loving 7 year old's son (and my husbands) eyes lit up.   So I would spend the next several HOURS following my family around the park casting spells at random…
  • Disney on a DIME!!

    7 Mar 2015 | 6:58 am
Disney on a dime? Well, no. Not really. If you could go to Disney on a dime, then my family would be there every month!! I'm not going to lie, DISNEY IS EXPENSIVE!!  So no, I can’t really tell you how to go to Disney for next to free, but I can help you budget and I can share a ton of money saving tips with you.
