Over the years, my wife and I have been members of Disney’s amazing DVC (Disney Vacation Club), proud owners in three Disney properties. We have had many memorable vacations and have been all over “Disney’s World” But the one destination that was missing from our itinerary was Disney’s Hilton Head Resort. For many years, we have wanted to go, but other, more “Exciting” venues tempted our palate and it was always put on the back burner. This year, however we finally made the plunge so to speak and I must agree with Disney…It is a Hidden Gem! But rest assured this is not one of…

Our ally and neighbor to the north have some of the most beautiful scenery and is the second largest country in area after Russia. The country was first settled by the French, but in 1763, Great Britain took control. With both countries colonizing the land, both French and English is spoken. In 1867 the British North America Act united English-speaking Upper Canada (Ontario) and French-speaking Lower Canada (Quebec) with Nova Scotia and New…

So last weekend was an occasion we’d all been so excited about…the Engagement Party!! We met all of the happy couple’s nearest and dearest at a lovely home marquee reception. Everyone looked gorgeous, there were flowers and balloons EVERYWHERE, and champagne. So much champagne. We revelled in being introduced to everyone as ‘The Bridesmaids’ (aka Royalty). We finally met the mysterious fiancée (who is just excellent, they are an adorable couple). And we finally met the rest of Team Bridesmaid in person, all of whom are an absolute delight making us even more…

I was not a fan of Aladdin, except for the Genie aka Robin Williams. Looking forward to this production was difficult at best.  Yes, I am a Disney fan but we all have our favorites and less than favorite movies. Why should you go to this production? James Monroe Inglehart.!!  I repeat #JamesMonroeInglehart…  There are very few times in theater in which an actor/actress, role, and show collide.   For Mr. Inglehart this is that moment.  He…

  • Monday Top 10: The World's Best Theme Park Castles

    20 Oct 2014 | 3:19 pm
By Robert Niles: What are the world's best theme park castles? Castles provide the iconic centerpiece for many of the world's most popular theme parks. The home of kings and queens in so many fairy tales, castles evoke memories of grand storytelling, setting an inspiring scene for people entering a theme park. But which castles do the best job of inspiring those theme park visitors? Let's set a couple of criteria to judge these landmarks: 1. How much do you want to take a picture of it? And, 2. What can you do in it? For previous Monday Top 10 posts, we've relied on Theme Park Insider reader…

The hands and headband will operate in the same way as the ears. The magic wands, however, also will have the ability to trigger changes in the light patterns on the other items. (When…

By Russell Meyer: Previously: Part OneWhen it comes to theme park tickets, deals are harder and harder to come by these days. There are some sites that offer modest (5%) discounts, but beware of websites that offer more significant discounts. The last thing you want to do is to show up at the Magic Kingdom with your kids and get turned away at the gate with an invalid ticket. You may also be able to get a deal through your employer — it never hurts to ask! Deals on tickets are usually found by carefully selecting the type of ticket you purchase. With the recent passing of my stepmother, I was reminded of a treasure trove of photos that were stamped "CONFIDENTIAL" from her days at the San Diego Wind Tunnel. These gems from the 1950's show her and her friend/coworker Kay posing with a model. From the San Diego Wind Tunnel website:Construction on the San Diego Wind Tunnel started in 1944 and was finished in 1946. The San Diego Wind Tunnel has been operating since May of 1947 and was built to provide aerodynamic testing for Consolidated Aircraft, the manufacturer of the B-24. These undated negatives are most likely from the 1950s/1960s and they show America's original Sweetheart of the Silent Screen, Mary Pickford, relaxing at Pickfair, the estate she built with her ex-husband Douglas Fairbanks. On the table you can see a photo of the two children she adopted with husband Charles "Buddy" Rogers, Ronald Charles and Roxanne. In this second shot, it becomes clear that the positioning of the children's portrait was crucial to the composition, as it is moved to a different table so that it can still be in view.Zooming into the publication on her lap, it looks like she…

Going into my own archives of photographs from a trip in 1987. The focus is on Star Tours, the motion simulator ride featuring the Star Wars universe and was drawing large crowds. Being of the right age, Star Wars was a great influence on me and a film series I watched and loved. Star Tours was a great fun ride with a story and set up that placed the guest into the universe. • Busch Gardens Van Nuys California 1968

    16 Oct 2014 | 6:13 am
In Van Nuys during the 1960s and 1970s was a fun theme park located next to a large brewery. The main draw for kids was a boat ride, monorail and lots of gorgeous tropical birds. The main draw for adults was free beer. Busch Gardens was owned and operated by the Anheuser-Busch company adjacent to the large Los Angeles brewery. In the late 1960s the main draw was a lovely Jungle Cruise style boat ride with the jungle filled with hundreds of tropical birds. In addition there was a neat monorail that toured the brewery. Although a strong tourist draw, images of the park are not that common.

The photographer did not pay attention to the warning of not to take photographs with their flash during this trip in 1975. First image is a you are there on the flat boat floating past the town. The scene of course is of everyone's favorite red head and take a wench for a bride. The next image is much more clear and features my second favorite drunk pirate. This pirate is wallowing in the slop and mud with the pigs. My favorite drunk pirate is the one playing with the kitties. Last image is of a nice yellow Autopia car. I believe this is the Fantasyland Autopia.
  • Scenic Knott Lake at Knott's Berry Farm

    14 Oct 2014 | 6:46 am
Once upon a time at Knott's Berry Farm, Walter Knott purchased an alkali field next to his farm. The field had become the Buena Park dump, so Walter bulldozed all the trash into a large pile and created a scenic lake. To further enhance the lake, scenic elements were added to the lake. The first view shows a scenic canoe, small structure and a walkway around the lake. In the background is a train car passing by. The second image shows the water sluice put into place for the gold panning attraction. In the background is the walkway through the mine to get to the gold panning area.

Here are some more of those August '69 photos; I have analyzed them with my atomic Pictometer, and they fall dangerously close to the "meh" category. Fortunately I am wearing proper lead-lined clothing and safety goggles.Cascade Peak looks pretty in the late-afternoon sunshine; the river feels so empty and still - not a canoe, keelboat, or sternwheeler to be found. If this was a real river, I'd want to go for a swim! But then I remember that the water is Disneyland water, and who knows what's in it.Look at how close those Mine Train tracks get to the lower falls. We need to install a railing,…
  • The Pirate Ship, 1956

    19 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two not-very-exciting pictures featuring that most-photographed ship named for a canned fish product! I am wondering if the photographer was trying to just get a nice photo of that lady and small child who seem to be waving at us from the upper deck (only to have the shot spoiled by those three interlopers)? I kind of think that wasn't the case, since those folks don't show up in any other photos. Maybe the guy with the camera was just really into anchors. I can almost imagine him exclaiming, "Look at the flukes on that baby!", only to get slapped by an outraged woman. This did…
  • Bride of "Train Related"!

    18 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
I have always loved Disneyland's trains, and as my appreciation for them grew over the years, I found that other trains (especially steam locomotives) were pretty appealing too. My guess is that more than a few of the GDB readers feel the same way. So… here are three photos of different trains from around the country. This first one shows a cute little train. "Edaville", what's that? Mr. Wikipedia sez, "Edaville Railroad is a heritage railroad in South Carver, Massachusetts. Opened in 1947, Edaville Railroad is generally regarded as one of the oldest heritage railroads in the United States.

This first photo is a real beauty, featuring the wonderful Casa de Fritos restaurant in adobe glory. I love the stripe of blue painted at the bottom of the building (makes me think of Taos, New Mexico for some reason - probably inaccurately). You can see some of the colorful painted tables and benches inside the main doorway. Notice the painted sombrero above the door; it's fun to observe the way the Imagineers have played with scale.. that balcony isn't very big. And there is even a crude lodge-pole ladder, like one might have found at the Montezuma Castle National Monument. Zooming in…
  • Knott's Berry Farm, 1950's

    16 Oct 2014 | 12:01 am
It's time for some more vintage Knott's Berry Farm!Mom, dad, and two identically-dressed little girls are about to enter the tunnel that was led to the Gold Mine (where you could pan for real gold!). When I was a tiny tot, I wasn't so sure I wanted to walk into that dark tunnel. What's in there? Is it scary? Turns out it wasn't scary at all, but that's how a little kid's mind works. I like the crude wooden buildings; it's easy to imagine that they were built by prospectors who weren't especially skilled, and had to scrounge for lumber. Nearby is a sleepy burro who would be mighty glad if you…

I just have a few questions about Cafe Orleans. 1. How long does a typical meal at Cafe Orleans last (for reference, I'm going on a light crowd day)? 2. Are the random "Princess and the Frog" overlay pieces still there? 3. Is the Bananas Foster Crepe any good? 4. What are the best and worst menu items? Thanks in advance!

I'm sure this question gets asked all the time but I couldn't find a thread with a good answer. I'm thinking of going to HKDL in either March or April 2015. Is there a better (less crowded and better weather) time to go during those months? Thanks in advance!

Just for fun...if ever Toontown does get torn down and replaced with an FL expansion, let's think about what could be there. Using something similar to MK's New Fantasyland setup, let's try coming up with something for the following to consist of DL's version of New Fantasyland: 1 Table Service Restaurant1 Quick Service Restaurantat least 1 themed shop1 dark ride1 coaster ride (family or thriller)1 misc-type attraction (ala Storytime w/Belle)any meet and greet areas (optional) The rules are: Everything must be based on a Disney IP. No original stories. I know it's a bummer but we know which…

    20 Oct 2014 | 12:05 pm
Some of you may recall I was looking for someone to make custom Starfleet uniforms for Duffy and Shellie because my Sweetheart and I are quite fond of Star Trek Next Generation. Well I indeed found someone on Etsy who was willing to help. Actually, she seemed quite amused by the whole idea. The plan was to have Duffy cosplay as Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the Enterprise. And to have Shellie cosplay as Doctor Crusher, the Enterprise's head of the medical department. And here is the results: (this is the seller's bears by the way, these are pictures she sent me to see if I approved.) I order…

I told her she needs to do a “CrossFit for Dummies” post on her site laying out what each one of the terms she uses means so I have a way to translate all the acronyms she throws around. TOPIC: The Rivers of America in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is more than a beautiful, serene waterway that carries guests to and around Tom Sawyer Island. It is a storytelling vehicle rich in history, detail and tributes to real American history and folklore, as well as Disney films and characters as well. 20 Oct 2014 | 7:00 am
Today’s blog post is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction…. Well, that’s not completely true. Last time, because I love Halloween, we looked at the tombstones in the Haunted Mansion queue area. This time, continuing my love of Halloween, we’re going to look at another attraction’s queue area, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. In case you don’t know, The Twilight Zone was a T.V. show in the 1960’s.  Rod Serling hosted the show inviting viewers on a trip to the fifth dimension where anything is possible.  Each episode told a different story, usually…

One of my favorite ways to take a step back, enjoy the scenery, and relax while in the Magic Kingdom Park can be found majestically floating through the Rivers of America. The Liberty Square Riverboat takes guests on a scenic tour along the river and offers unique glimpses of the park along the way. The attraction opened one day after the Magic Kingdom Park on October 2, 1971, and originally featured two different riverboats- the Richard F. Irvine and the Admiral Joe Fowler. Both men were instrumental in helping with the construction and completion of the Magic Kingdom Park and were…

One of the worst things about photography as a hobby is the need to carry lots of “stuff.”  From cameras to lenses and tripods to filters, carrying photography equipment in the parks can be an exercise in physical endurance. On our last trip to Walt Disney World, we decided to change it up and use our cell phones’ cameras to capture images on the fly.  Thanks to swiftly changing technology, cell phone cameras are making it easier to capture quick, yet quality images.  The best part–they are light, fit in your pocket, are uncomplicated to use, and can produce some…

WDW Radio - Your Walt Disney World Information Station by Lou Mongello

  • Show # 382 – The Rivers of America – A Virtual Trip Through Its History and Details, Recorded Live from Walt Disney World

    Lou Mongello
    20 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
TOPIC: The Rivers of America in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is more than a beautiful, serene waterway that carries guests to and around Tom Sawyer Island. It is a storytelling vehicle rich in history, detail and tributes to real American history and folklore, as well as Disney films and characters as well. It has it’s own, comprehensive backstory, and this week, I welcome you into Liberty Square and Frontierland, and aboard the Liberty Belle, as we virtually explore the history of the Rivers of America. We will discuss it’s current and former attractions, including the Mike Fink…
  • The Inside Jokes of WDW: The “Twilight Zone Tower of Terror”

“Welcome to the Magic Kingdom”   Hey Disney fans. Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile, high school is hard. Today I will be talking about a few things for teens in the Magic Kingdom Park. Now with some people I have talked to, the Magic Kingdom Park is known to be a more “kiddie” park with it being the lead park for Disney. I personally LOVE Magic Kingdom Park and all the history behind the rides and attractions there. It will always hold a special place in my heart for all the memories I’ve had over the years. By Guy Selga Jr. Some say math is the universal language; I completely disagree with this. The one true thing that all of mankind can understand is food. On my recent trip to Tokyo, I found that the people of Japan love food as much as I do, and this is especially true at Tokyo Disneyland and its neighboring park, Tokyo DisneySea. I am especially fond of Disney food and spend quite a bit of time tweeting and blogging about it, so naturally food was a big part of my Tokyo Disney Resort vacation. Now, for purpose of record, I rank every meal and snack I ate at Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea.

  • 2014 Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Showcase Recap

On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Ride Review

The one thing Patrick absolutely had to do on our August trip to Walt Disney World was ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. When we realized his schedule only allowed us to try for it on a Saturday morning, we bit the bullet and made an early reservation at Crystal Palace for breakfast in order to get as close as we could to the rope before it dropped. (Do not fear for our immortal souls: They hold guests who are already in the park near Cosmic Ray’s until the guests at the gate have been escorted to that spot, so everyone gets the same shot at speed-walking toward the Mine Train.)…

Memorable experiences include my Birthday No. 33 at Club 33, a Ryman Arts Foundation breakfast, and the time Patrick arrived with food poisoning, tossed his cookies into the lobby wastebasket, and still had to pay $90 for a meal he didn’t get. But most of my reports would have been about the same: celebrating some milestone, drooling over the historical details, snarking about the Blue…

  • How to Use an Intel 2 in 1 Laptop to Display Photos on Your TV

    Dan
    18 Oct 2014 | 4:54 pm
We will have several family members visiting over the next few months, which means it is prime time to share some family photos. Most of our images are either saved on our computer or phone, which can make it difficult to share unless grandma and grandpa are sitting right next to you. Even then, no one really wants to squint at a picture on a small screen. We have an Intel powered 2 in 1 laptop and an Xbox 360 in our house, which is all we needed to do a photo slideshow on our family TV. To get the photos on the big screen, I just installed the OneDrive app on our laptop and then copied our…

I am spending this week in Orlando for a tech conference and then am off to New York for more work stuff next week. This means I will be spending some quality time on an airplane and the cramped seating arrangement makes it difficult to get much of anything done. Having WiFi on a plane is great and all, but I usually don’t have enough space to open my laptop. Intel processors are powering a new type of computer called a 2 in 1, which is basically a single machine that can work as a tablet or a laptop. I have been using a Lenovo Yoga for a few years, which can be folded back into a…

I’m in Orlando this week for a business trip, but this visit is special because my wife and son came along with me. The majority of my time will be spent talking tech in convention halls while my family gets to play in the theme parks. But we have a few days together at the tail end of the trip for some family fun. Most families probably think of mouse ears and castles when you mention an Orlando trip. But even though I have visited this area countless times, the Kennedy Space Center remains one of my favorite side trips. We often see space travel depicted by Hollywood, but we rarely…

It is safe to say that we have a high tech household. We have multiple tablets and computers. Each of us have a smartphone. We control our thermostat and sound system using WiFi. We have a lot of devices connected to the internet, which is why I couldn’t resist adding GE smart light bulbs to my cart when I saw them at The Home Depot. So the first question everyone asks – Why do you need to control your lights from your phone? Can’t you just flip a switch on the wall? And yes, you can still turn on the lights the traditional way. But these WiFi enabled light bulbs can do a…

Whether you are just driving your children to school or taking a long road trip, you want a family vehicle that is safe, reliable, and comfortable. I am pretty sure this is why most families have either an SUV or a Minivan in the driveway. You need extra space for the family and for all of the stuff we like to bring along. When you are a parent, safety becomes the biggest reason why you purchase any vehicle. I know many people who traded in their cars for “something safer” when their first child arrived. The trade off is usually that, while safe and reliable, family vehicles…
