I have just returned from Disney’s Swan and Dolphin’ 5th annual Food and Wine Classic and I can report that this is the best Festival yet! Since I first covered this increasing popular venue in 2012, I am still amazed how in just two short days, Friday October 31st and November 1st of how much fun can be had where you can drink, eat, mingle, enjoy entertainment and fireworks, all while strolling the causeways around the Swan and Dolphin’s beautiful Crescent Lake. Coinciding with EPCOT’s 19th annual Food and Wine Festival, this Festival gives Disney guests an opportunity to sample both…

Disney characters are world-renowned, recognized by everyone. They are famous for their extended families, Nieces, Nephews, and Uncles. There are Mickey’s nephews, Morty and Ferdie, Daisy Duck’s Nieces April, May and June, Minnies Nieces Melody and Millicent and let us not forget Scrooge McDuck. But perhaps the most famous of the clan are Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Moreover, another fact about the nieces and nephews are no mention of their parents, or history except maybe a brief sentence or two. So a little history of the trio is in order. They began their career in the…

Walt Disney could without any argument be included among history’s greatest legions of Innovator’s, Dreamers and Showmen. Walt had the uncanny ability to know what would work, and was a stickler for perfection. He was also the eternal optimist. No matter what, Walt always had a bright outlook, even during bankruptcy; it seemed nothing could bring him down. Even when his distractors were telling him no, (Walt’s wife Lillian and Brother Roy as Walt planned “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) Walt Disney never wavered a bit, stuck to his guns, and finished his “Dreams” In the end, he…

Max Goof or his given name Maximilian Goof is the son of Goofy Goof, Disney’s lovable but clumsy character. Although throughout his career, Goofy’s wife was never really mentioned, and it was never said what became of her. Goofy himself started out in an obscure role as an obnoxious character named “Dippy Dawg” (The original name given before Goofy) in the 1932 short, Mickey’s Revue. It was not until the 1952 Cartoon “Father’s Day Off” that Goofy was shown with his son Max as a baby. The only brief appearances that his wife had were in the 1951 cartoons’ “Cold War” and…

WE MADE IT TO D-land!! It was a dream come true! There were days when the thought of Adam at Disneyland was something I’d picture in mind just to get through a horrible day. (You know, kind of like how I refer to Hawaii). Than I thought of it as a far out of reach goal. One day out of the blue I whispered under my breath, “God, if this Your Will please make it happen. • Vote of the Week: Do You Play Carnival Games?

    21 Nov 2014 | 10:42 am
By Robert Niles: ORLANDO — We've been in Orlando all week for the annual IAAPA Attractions Expo. The show fills the entire North/South building of the Orange County Convention Center, with more than one million square feet of exhibit space. Companies selling carnival games fill a good chunk of that space, as carnival games provide a steady flow of money to operators of amusement parks, fairs, and family entertainment centers. Our Derek Potter has written a great guide to winning carnival games, for those of you who play. Maybe by using his advice, you might consider playing, or playing more…
  • Master the Midway: The Theme Park Insider Guide to Winning Carnival Games

    21 Nov 2014 | 8:57 am
By Derek Potter: We’ve all been there in some way or another. Maybe it’s trying to win a prize for your friend or your kids or showing off. Other times the mood just catches someone right and they want to test their mettle, or they were incited by a skillful carnival barker. Still other times, some just have money burning a hole in their pocket and have to have that 50-cent prize, even if they spend 10 bucks to get it.From the beginning, they’ve been a staple of the midway, and from the beginning they have been confounding, frustrating, scheming, and angering the masses. Amusement park…
  • Looking Ahead to the Next Great Transformation in the Theme Park Industry

    21 Nov 2014 | 8:05 am
By Robert Niles: ORLANDO — If the annual IAAPA Legends panel looks back at the transformative moments in the industry's past, the Future Legends panel faces a much more difficult task — to look for emerging moments that will become transformative for the future. As a result, while the Legends panel evokes laughter and thoughtful reflection, the Future Legends panel is much more provocative, challenging the audience with glimpses of emerging technology and techniques that might prove to be nothing more than passing fads... or might just become the next great disruption in the themed…

    20 Nov 2014 | 9:12 am

The West Side parking garage opened to guests this morning, though the planned new freeway access ramps are far from completed. We mentioned in our Fulton's Crab House review yesterday that much of Downtown Disney has become a forest of construction walls, disrupting many of the previous pathways from the West Side to the Marketplace. The heart of Disney Springs is the old Pleasure Island…

At first glance, this February 1941 publicity shot of Mickey Rooney and Shirley Temple looks like it could be a very wholesome first date at a local soda fountain. Not so. • Rainbow Ridge Train Station, November 1971

    Dave DeCaro
    20 Nov 2014 | 5:57 am
In this November 1971 color photo, we get a glorious view of the original Rainbow Ridge Mining Town. The town itself survived the changeover to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad thrill ride, but has undergone a few changes. It would appear that the building on the upper right has now become the Assay Office, seen in this recent comparison view: The design of the El Dorado Hotel (barely visible on the far right in photo #1) with a barber shop on the side has remained fairly consistent over the years, minus the awning. With big beautiful shade trees around it, I guess there's no need for an…

  • Two Publicity Worthy Photographs

    20 Nov 2014 | 6:31 am
Two nice images today that are worthy of being publicity photographs. First is a color image of the Naturgre's Wonderland Railroad moving through the wilderness. The framing of this image is almost perfect. If you look closely, you can see a family riding in the front cab. The second image is of the stately Mark Twain coming into dock. This reminds me of an early postcard.
  • Rafts and the Burning Cabin

    19 Nov 2014 | 6:38 am
Two views of attractions in Frontierland from 1963. First up is a nice overhead view of a Tom Sawyer Island Raft docking on the island. In the background can be seen the Haunted Mansion (recruiting ghosts at this time to fill it's infinite halls) and also the Disneyland Hotel tower. This dock is no longer in use for the rafts and is now used as a spot to sit and watch the action of the Mark Twain and Columbia at the Frontierland dock. The second image is one of the best pictures of the Burning Settler's Cabin that I have seen. The fire is consuming the structure and you can even see the arrow…
  • Two Sides of the Matterhorn

    18 Nov 2014 | 6:48 am
The photographer enjoyed taking pictures of the Matterhorn. The first shows the side of the Matterhorn from the Main Street side. A very colorful group of guests are captured in this image. The second image is the Fantasyland side from the Skyway. Note the guest taking photographs from the green bucket. Also the track layout for Alice can be seen with a caterpillar ride vehicle on the track.
  • Columbia and Twain

    17 Nov 2014 | 6:07 am
Two views of the majestic ships that ply the Rivers of America. First view is of the Columbia passing the Big Thunder falls heading towards the dock. Frontierland looks fantastic and lush in this view. The next image is of the Mark Twain coming into the dock with Cascade Peak in the background. Although I have seen and posted lots of images of the Mark Twain, but I still enjoy all the views.

  • In Fantasyland, August 1969

    23 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Here are two sort of oddball photos from Fantasyland, circa 1969. The 70's were almost here! While I like this shot of the crowds milling about on a summer day (in between the Carrousel and the Snow White attraction), the photographer seemed to be mighty interested in those cloth banners that provided a tiny bit of shade in that mostly-treeless part of Fantasyland. I'm sure that a typical summer day could easily be in the high 80's or 90's. Or maybe the photographer was interested in the various flags and pennants. Who knows.Hugh Hefner and Snow White have something in common: they both have…
  • Ringling Bros, Sarasota - March 17, 1956

    22 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Today I thought I'd share a few fun photos from Sarasota, Florida, where the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus had their winter headquarters (established in 1927). It makes sense, since so much of the USA gets hit with harsh winters; why not find a sunny, warm place to relax? The circus folk didn't just sit around eating bonbons and watching soap operas though - they still performed for crowds of fellow snowbirds. This first photo is neat, I love the group of people on the back of that elephant - you can almost imagine the swaying, slightly bumpy ride that they are experiencing. The…
  • Beautiful Tomorrowland, 1956

    21 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Oh boy, more vintage Tomorrowland! My favorite. And the "Clock of the World" is also my favorite.  I can have lots of favorites! I love the way the Clock is trying so hard to look futuristic, and yet, to 2014 brains, it is about as retro as can be. The blue tiled base, the gold spiky sun (and moon, on the other side), even the font used for the numbers, it all screams "mid-century". Which is awesome. In the distance is a certain moon rocket...…. and here's a closer look. I'm not sure if the camera's exposure was just set differently, but things look much lighter and brighter. The…

    20 Nov 2014 | 12:01 am
Here's another selection of "greatest hits" from the past - this time we'll concentrate on Fantasyland. This first image is from a badly damaged slide (originally posted in 2007) - it took some considerable effort in Photoshop to get it back to a presentable state. And it was worth it, as it is one of my favorite images (reminding me of guide book pictures). The sense of motion is nice, and the lady's smile is really what sells it for me!A family de-caterpillars from the Alice in Wonderland dark ride in this 1966 photo. I love those vehicles SO much - but would really like to know what other…

I love these two photos of a mother and daughter posing in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at different times of the day! What's with all the "suits"?! And where are all the other children? I think the castle looks wonderful with its soft shades of blue and gray (with only a hint of pink above the archway). The daughter is cute in her blue coat and babushka. All of those semi-circular seating areas were recently removed thanks to Cal OSHA and the Disney lawyers. I feel safer already!  Later in the day dad took another photo, this time from an oblique angle that is very pretty in the…

  • You Can Leave Your Hat Off

    Suzannah Mitchell
    26 Oct 2014 | 12:47 pm
I began writing this as a caption to a photo I had posted before on Instagram, of a hat-free view of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (of course, then known as Disney-MGM Studios). My thoughts got away from me, and I had soon reached “caption limit” on Instagram, so I copied and pasted what I’d been writing into my “Notes” on my phone. I had never before written a blog post on my phone, save for very short updates about new purses being released while I may have been away from my laptop. But I was lost in the moment, and just kept typing. What follows is that…

During a visit to Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground a few months back, I was filled with an epic case of nostalgia regarding what our beloved Walt Disney World was like when it opened back in 1971. I instantly wanted to write an article reflecting on my thoughts and how things were way back then. Granted, I wasn’t born then, but a handful of years later, I’d be celebrating my first visit to the Vacation Kingdom of the World. After a more recent visit to celebrate Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue’s 40th anniversary, I was reminded that I really needed…

As far back as I can remember, when my family has wanted to mark a special occasion, we have typically done so by indulging in a multi-course meal at a restaurant specializing in exceptionally prepared and presented fresh seafood.  Whether fish or shellfish—from seawater or freshwater—we have enjoyed lingering over meals in order to better appreciate the sumptuous cuisine as well as to extend our time spent together. Over the years, I have learned that when such a meal concludes, only the memories of the delicious food and shared moments remain. Many of those times are ones I will…

Walt Disney could without any argument be included among history’s greatest legions of Innovator’s, Dreamers and Showmen. Throughout our many trips to Walt Disney World, we’ve have had the opportunity to get to know many cast members.  Because we both love music, many of our friends are those who work with Walt Disney World live entertainment.  So it’s become a routine that we schedule our visits to the parks around the variety of live shows that are scheduled across all four parks.  It’s not just quality entertainment—the cast members and their instruments make for capturing awesome images. Are you ready to take on the challenge?  How many cast members do you recognize by their…

By Kevin Bastos My wife walked into our study – so-called the Yankees room – adorned with retired jerseys, souvenirs from baseball games, and posed figures clutching bats and blocking home plate. As she does before mentioning something that she likes, she led with a phrase meant as more than subtext, “I know I shouldn’t be mentioning this…” and she referred me to the Disney online store where new souvenirs from the Haunted Mansion collection had just been launched. I have a terrible habit of keeping a record of everything my wife mentions that she even has a slight…

By Derek Burgan This week’s SATURDAY SIX takes a look at Six “Easter Eggs” at the Universal Orlando Resort. The Universal theme parks are filled with extraordinary features, from the incredible dragon atop Gringotts bank in Diagon Alley, to the hilarious games of chance in front of The Simpsons Ride, but my favorite ones are the subtle – almost hidden -details that most guests don’t even notice while touring the park. I like to think of these details as Easter eggs, similar to the ones most of us are familiar with in movies (and, in Hollywood, no one is better…

There are a number of possible explanations, so it is difficult to pinpoint the correct one. Currently there is a pathway that you can take to and from the garage to the shopping district located near the Downtown Disney AMC. Overall, the garage is quite nice; it is very…

It started back in 1986 when a little girl named Breezy asked her Dad if they could string a few Christmas lights at their Little Rock, Arkansas home. That display grew and grew each year until 1995, when the display was shut down by court order. After national attention was brought to the case, the Walt Disney Company stepped in and offered up residential street on the Studios Backlot Tour where it was an instant hit. Eventually, as the focus of the Backlot Tour changed the holiday lights were moved to the Streets of America. read more

  • Throwback Thursday: Halloween at Dick Van Dyke’s House

    Carrie
    30 Oct 2014 | 12:30 pm
Those of you who see this annually, bear with me. I get a lot of questions this time of year about helping decorate Dick Van Dyke’s house for Halloween. It was this crazy fluke that we knew somebody who knew somebody who helped Van Dyke stage his legendary Halloween displays. Dick Van Dyke LOVES Halloween—he says it’s like Christmas for him, and he likes to go all-out to have the most gruesome, over-the-top display on the block. So for five years we had the privilege of being on the team of folks who helped him, er, execute his vision. In 2013 Van Dyke decided to hang up his…

When we were in Walt Disney World last month, we attended Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for the first time in four years, mostly so we could experience the new Villains’ Sinister Soiree: A Wicked Takeover of Cinderella Castle—because if they were charging $99/person on top of the cost of a party ticket that costs $62–$77/person, it must be starring Michael Jackson returned from the grave and feature brand-new Cadillacs as favors, right?! Despite not being a huge fan of character meet-n-greets, parades or stale candy, I was really looking forward to attending the…
  • 2014 Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Showcase Recap

On Saturday, Patrick and I joined a gaggle of giddy brides, several starry-eyed mothers of brides, and a handful of highly evolved grooms at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ 2014 Bridal Showcase. Disney is starting to pick up the pace on its bridal showcases, narrowing the gap from two years to one year and now planning the next one for early 2015. (You can read about 2011’s here and 2013’s here.) To me, it seems like they get better each year. (You can hear what other brides think here and here.) Some of the elements remain consistent, like the show floor with exhibits…

The one thing Patrick absolutely had to do on our August trip to Walt Disney World was ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. When we realized his schedule only allowed us to try for it on a Saturday morning, we bit the bullet and made an early reservation at Crystal Palace for breakfast in order to get as close as we could to the rope before it dropped. (Do not fear for our immortal souls: They hold guests who are already in the park near Cosmic Ray’s until the guests at the gate have been escorted to that spot, so everyone gets the same shot at speed-walking toward the Mine Train.)…

Great Wolf Lodge has a sweet surprise that will be unveiled in just a few days. The annual gingerbread house, one of the best parts of Snowland, is carefully being decorated by hand in the resort lobby. When complete, the house will be covered with more than 4,000 Holiday Peeps and will be large enough for families to dine inside. For the past few years, my family has visited Great Wolf Lodge around the holidays for the unique experience of dining inside the giant gingerbread house. The design varies each year and Pastry Chef Amie Hanrahan said that a visit to Leavenworth,…

Every time that I fill the gas tank on my SUV, I mumble that I should buy an electric car. My wife drives a Kia Sorrento, which gets great mileage. But it takes $75 to fill my 2004 SUV on a good day and closer to $100 when gas prices were soaring. Whenever I see an electric vehicle zipping by on the freeway, I have to wonder if there is a better way. Kia recently introduced its first electric vehicle, the 2015 Soul EV. If you have seen the commercials with the dancing hamsters, you know the car that I’m talking about. The Soul EV is an electric version of what has been one of…

That road trip to see my dad was one of those defining moments in my life. Our relationship had been rocky for a while and I was trying to find a way…
