Tops, yo-yos, and other spinning toys are amongst the oldest playthings created by man, with the earliest examples dating back to 3,500 BC. Paradoxically, they’re not very easy to make with their design requiring a lot of trial and error. One mistake and, instead of a pirouetting plaything, you get a clattering paperweight. That’s why spinning toys tend to be symmetrical – until now. In a blow … Disney – Yahoo News Search Results

  • Festival of the Masters at Downtown Disney canceled for 2014

    John Frost
    20 Aug 2014 | 2:38 pm
If there’s one event at Downtown Disney I look forward to every year, it’s the very popular and long running Festival of the Masters. Unfortunately, due to construction of Disney Springs, Disney has decided to cancel the event for 2014. This November 7-9th would have marked the 39th time the event was held at Walt Disney World. Over the year’s the event has become very prestigious for artists to get accepted to and attracted skilled photographers, sculptors, and painters among other artists from across the country. Those who had already sent in their payment for this year,…
  • SeaWorld won’t appeal OSHA ruling keeping trainers out of water

    20 Aug 2014 | 2:20 am
I’m a bit surprised, but not totally shocked, by SeaWorld’s decision not to appeal the court ruling enforcing OSHA’s finding that it was unsafe to have employees (aka trainers) in the water with Killer Whales (aka big animals with a remote risk of danger). I expected SeaWorld to take the position that it will keep trainers out of the water during the performances, but that “in water” sessions were essential for training. However, it looks like the park has decided to tackle the issue another way. That way was the recently announced Blue World project that will…
  • Downtown Disney to Disney Springs construction update – August 2014

Earlier today we had a video with a Walt Disney Imagineer talking about the backstory that will unite Disney Springs once the transformation is complete. The first area, The Landing, will open in 2015. Our latest construction update looks at progress at The Landing as well as other projects, big and small around the shopping and dining district that will soon be formerly known a Downtown Disney. Take special note of the new ferry boat dock. All three docks are back in operation now. Only the Marketplace location is now closer to Saratoga Springs than Rainforest Cafe. There’s also been…

  • What is the backstory for Disney Springs?

    John Frost

Walt Disney Imagineering Executive Creative Director Theron Skees is out with the first video giving guests a greater insight into the story behind Disney Springs. Disney Springs will unite the existing Downtown Disney area under one-project backstory with multiple themed locations. The Landing is the first of those areas and it will open in 2015. I love the use of pre-viz to help you get a feel for the architecture of the finished project. Downtown Disney has been a part of Walt Disney World for 40 years (even earlier if you count the preview center that is now the Amateur Athletics…

So this weekend I finished up my last long run before I head out to Disneyland for my first Dumbo Double Dare Challenge. While the Jeff Galloway training plan available on runDisney called for 14 miles, my TCS NYC Marathon training plan called for 12 miles to be completed between 152 and 157 minutes. I decided to stay true to my marathon training plan since I want to make sure to stay healthy for that. Besides, I’ve never trained over 13.1 miles to run 13.1 miles. Okay, okay, I’ve never trained over 11 miles for a 13.1 before, so 12 seemed like a good plan. I set out to the super…

After our adventures in Toon Town, we made our way over to the Plaza Inn for the Minnie and Friends Character Breakfast. We prefer to have a late breakfast (this was at 11:00) to take advantage of when the parks are less crowded when they first open. Thus breakfast is more like lunch and it’s usually less expensive than a lunch sit-down. We had never eaten here before. I had purchased character meal vouchers before our trip that included the meal, tax and gratuity. When I checked in, they gave me my “coupons” and then when we walked in we “paid” with them…

Tickets cost more for non-members, but since you can get a basic D23 membership for free, and qualify for the members' Expo price with it, you might as well just do that and avoid the sucker rate. The Expo runs Aug. 14-16, 2015 at the Anaheim Convention Center, across the street from the Disneyland Resort, so if you're planning a Disneyland vacation along with a D23 visit, you'll want to book that soon, too, as hotels in the area…

You never know who may have memories of Disneyland or great images that they will share. This set comes from a new friend who I met through work. Her dad, David Deifik visited Disneyland on July 23, 1963 and loved Tomorrowland. David kept a dairy and noted the date. For those without Jason's Almanac, Disneyland was open on this Tuesday from 9 AM to 12 AM, the high was 82 and the low was 61 and the attendance was 35,431 guests. The first image shows the Matterhorn mountain in the early sun as taken from the front of the Monorail. A nice selection of signs can be seen including the Motor Boat…

    15 Aug 2014 | 7:09 am
Coming from the late 1960's is this neat ashtray. The colors are different than any other ashtray I have seen and the castle is a great modern stylized design. The back has the older style hallmark. I call this stamp the berm mark as it looks like the shape of the Disneyland berm. I see this mark from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. In the early 1970s, Walt Disney Productions took over distribution of their own souvenirs and the hallmark is the classic Disneyland D and the more modern Walt Disney World D intertwined.

Two black and white snapshots from Disneyland circa late 1950s. The first image shows the City Hall with some great signage out front including a nice map of Disneyland, Lost Children, Disneyland News and a great Trolley advertising sandwich board. This City Hall is based upon one close to my home in Fort Collins, Colorado. The second image shows the Disneyland Band performing in Town Square. Quite a nice crowd sitting and relaxing to the music. I wonder if there are any lost children in this image?

The public never forgave monorails, and history was altered forever.I'm sort of fascinated by some of the artificial sea life that was in the lagoon. You never know what you might find! This first one was obviously clipped from an old photo album, and shows a scene from Jungleland in Thousand Oaks (you've seen it on this blog several times). To be honest I'm not completely sure this is an amateur photo - it has a retouched look to it that makes me think that it was purchased. You might have to wait in line 3 hours to meet Anna and Elsa, but you can meet two of the Three Little Pigs RIGHT NOW! This pig is not just known as the "Practical Pig", he even LOOKS practical. Eyes straight ahead, determined to get where he's going (the bathroom, pro'lly). God help any kid who tried to stop him… pigs can be dangerous when riled! And this one carries a hammer (or so I've heard). However, he is always happy to answer your any questions relating to "do it yourself" home projects. "Should I use redwood for my Craftsman-style pergola, or pressure-treated lumber?".
  • Main Street, March 13 1958

    18 Aug 2014 | 12:01 am
I like this first view of the east side of Main Street U.S.A. because the place is so deserted! Judging from the clock, it is just past 1:30 in the afternoon, but people seem to be as scarce as hen's teeth. Keep in mind that attendance on this March day never exceeded 4,000, which is ridiculous. Once again I'd like to point out the wonderful variety of façades. Anaheim's Main Street feels prosperous and clean, but not completely out of the realm of possibility. When visiting relatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin, I would often pass through small towns with their own little Main Streets - many…

  • Top 5 Ways to Welcome Fall in Walt Disney World

    Suzannah Mitchell
    14 Aug 2014 | 8:09 am
I know, I know, it’s still summer – it’s still hot – (over 100 here at Walt Disney World!) but I find myself drifting to thoughts of cool autumn breezes, falling leaves, and pumpkins…Okay, maybe some of those things don’t exactly happen here in Florida, but a girl can dream. Believe it or not, “Orlando Halloween” is right around the corner (that’s what we locals call it when Halloween descends upon the area in early August while we’re all sweating in the sun) and that means lots of fun options to get in the Fall spirit. And while I…

Until then, enjoy this sneak peek and thank you again to Jill and Elantrice for letting me share this photo here! I have no idea what the actual name of this print is, but…

    6 Aug 2014 | 9:21 am
After my recent visit a little further north of the hot Florida sun, the cooler weather got me thinking about the holiday season, so I was thrilled when this announcement about the Gaylord Palms ICE! theme and other Christmas events came through. This year, ICE! will feature The Nutcracker, one of my favorite holiday tales and one with a personal connection – my mother (a former professional ballerina) played the Sugar Plum Fairy for the Boston Ballet many years ago and it’s always been a family tradition to watch or experience The Nutcracker somehow each year. I think The…

Now this is the kind of partnership I love. Disney and coffee. Joffrey’s Coffee, which has had a presence at Walt Disney World since 1995 and is now served at many locations on both coasts, is now creating specialty coffee blends based on signature Disney parks and resorts restaurants. But more than just the coffee blends, which I’ll speak about in a moment, I love that Joffrey’s has taken the time and effort to create really unique and fun labels for the different coffee types. There are great descriptions for each type, showing they really know the restaurants they are…

Many of you may recall that my husband and I are expecting our first baby.  Unlike many expectant mothers, I have not experienced any extremely unusual cravings.  I will, however, admit to having some strong yearnings for, what I consider to be, common food items and dishes.  Topping the list, crispy French fries in all shapes, sizes, and served up plain, with ketchup on the side or topped with yummy things like cheese, chili, malt vinegar, etc.  So, when the Disney Parks Blog reported on the newest menu items to reach the Magic Kingdom® Park, I definitely found my mouth watering. The last attraction Walt Disney worked on prior to his death, this adventure on the high seas takes guests through the adventures of pirates. • I Have a Craving for Waffle Fries

    Kendall Foreman
    20 Aug 2014 | 7:00 am
Move…
  • Finding Disney: The Essence of “Disney’s Hollywood Studios®”

    20 Aug 2014 | 6:00 am
Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life   This column is typically about finding those little glimpses of Disney magic in daily routines. For four weeks, though, we’re taking the phrase “Finding Disney” and turning it on its head by asking this question: How do you find Disney when you’re in Disney? Everything experienced on Walt Disney World property has ties to Disney in some way, obviously, but some attractions, atmospheres, and elements permeate with a deeper sense of embodiment for what the Disney name truly means to all of us. Today we’re exploring Disney’s…

    Alex Larson
    19 Aug 2014 | 7:00 am
“Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirates Life For Me!” Pirates of the Caribbean® (POTC) is one of the all time classics not only at Walt Disney World® but also Disneyland®, Disneyland® Paris and Tokyo Disneyland®. The last attraction Walt Disney worked on prior to his death, this adventure on the high seas takes guests through the adventures of pirates. POTC is one of the most detailed attractions, and there are countless things that the Imagineers have added to make it so immersive. Since there are so many details in the show scenes, I will pick out some of my favorite and discuss them. The…

  • Exploring Walt Disney World with a Narrative Clip Camera

    Erin Foster
    21 Aug 2014 | 3:00 am
By Erin Foster During a recent round of retail therapy (don’t judge), I bought myself a new tech toy: the Narrative Clip camera. (Currently about $230 on Amazon, but if you were in bargain hunter mode you could probably find it for a bit less elsewhere.) As you can see, the Narrative Clip is a very tiny, passive camera that you clip (thus the name) onto your person, or anywhere else you like. The camera is roughly the size, shape, and weight of a Triscuit cracker. The camera has no buttons, dials, or controls of any sort, just a lens, the clip, and a little port on the bottom with which…

For those who will be attending the Frozen Summer Fun Live event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, beginning September 2 guests have the option to choose the “For The First Time In Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” as a tier 2 FastPass+ option. I have no clue if this means that the paper tickets that were being handed out will still be issued; however, I would guess…

By Tammy Whiting So you’re going on a Disney Cruise! That’s awesome. As I’ve referenced before, most things on a Disney Cruise are included. Most. One biggie not included is port excursions, however. And let’s be honest, port excursions can play a pretty big role in your cruise. Excursions are a terrific way to see the exciting ports you are visiting, and planning them is not something that should be taken lightly. There are a lot of factors to consider! And here are 10 of them. 1. Do You Need to Book Anything? – Maybe! But maybe not! Excursions shouldn’t make or break your…

Magic Kingdom, April 2012. This shot just happened to capture two people in two different worlds. One old and one new. One high-tech and one low-tech. We have a sketch and silhouette artist with no customers gazing at his watch. Then we have a boy completely engaged in playing “Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.” Only feet apart, they […]

Best known to comics fans as Mockingbird, Palicki’s character will appear in the fifth episode with the potential to return. The episode will find her popping in (perhaps not as an ally) to Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team. The arrival of Mockingbird was first teased in July at Comic-Con when Patton Oswalt, who plays […]

  • Now You Can Send On-Ride Photo to Mobile Device at Disneyland

    disneydose@gmail.com (DisneyApprentice)
    19 Aug 2014 | 5:20 pm
Disneyland is experimenting with allowing guests to send their on-ride photo to their smart device. This new system is being tested at California Screamin’ in Disney California Adventure and Splash Mountain in Disneyland. I first saw the new product after I rode California Screamin’ on Monday morning. Multiple area managers were crowded around the regular front line Cast Members who were using iPads to enter guests phone number and send out the photos. The cost of the service is $14.95, or you can combine the service with the other ways to purchase the photo. Sending your…

  • Disneyland Dream Suite: Months of Work, One Magical Night

    disneydose@gmail.com (DisneyApprentice)
    11 Aug 2014 | 12:05 pm
Staying at the Disneyland Dream Suite has long been one of my top Disney bucket list items, high up there with the other exclusive Disneyland places like Club 33 and Walt Disney’s apartment. While I personally haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Disneyland Dream Suite, my friend Richard had the opportunity to stay the night in the suite. Here’s his story of the Disneyland Dream Suite: Ugh, I needed coffee. Hours of prize hunting takes its toll and per our routine we were at Disneyland’s gates at least 15 minutes before park opening. Many, many times we were…

  • Disney Never Wanted You to See the Haunted Mansion Like This

    disneydose@gmail.com (DisneyApprentice)
    4 Aug 2014 | 9:57 pm
These photos are from a trip backstage at the Haunted Mansion attraction. The way that Walt Disney Imagineers created the ghost effect throughout the classic Haunted Mansion attraction is by using mirrors and reflections to create a whispy effect on the ghost figures. In reality, the ghost figures are in one room with their reflections being cast into another room causing them to appear to be able to float through tables and fly. • When Should You Give Your Child a Cell Phone?

    Dan
    8 Aug 2014 | 10:35 pm
We have a lot of firsts coming up. My son is entering first grade. This will be his first time in public school. And this will be the first time he won’t be in the same school where my wife teaches. Our family will be experiencing a lot of new things as we move from Oregon to Washington and change always comes with its share of uncertainty. The after school pick up seems to be the biggest source of worry. While I can rationally remind myself of the countless times I made it from the classroom to the school bus as a child, it doesn’t do much to lessen my overprotective tendencies as a…
  • Camelbaks Can Help You Beat the Heat and Save Money at Disneyland

    Dan
    4 Aug 2014 | 11:08 pm
During a recent visit to Disneyland, we noticed that several families were wearing Camelbaks, the water filled backpacks that are often popular with hikers and bicyclists. At first, the idea of bringing a Camelbak seemed excessive. Does anyone really need (or want to) carry that much water with them at Disneyland? But as the day wore on and the temperature continued to rise, I couldn’t help but think that this was a brilliant idea. From a cost perspective, you would be amazed at how much you can spend on drinks during a hot day. When we got home, we added up the cost of buying drinks…
  • Washington Mom and Son Take an Epic 100 Mile Walk to Great Wolf Lodge

    22 Jul 2014 | 11:38 am
What is the biggest adventure you have ever taken with your children? A mom and her 7-year-old son are walking over 100 miles from their home in the Seattle area to visit Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA. You read that right. They are walking the entire way. Jamie Teevan, the adventurous mom, and her husband have a tradition of taking each of their four sons on individual vacations. This year, her son Cale said he wanted to visit his favorite place in the world, Great Wolf Lodge. But instead of spending the whole week at the water park, Jamie had a bigger idea: a week-long journey to Great…

    20 Jul 2014 | 11:14 pm
If you could pick any super power, what would it be? Would you want to fly, turn invisible, or be strong enough to lift anything? When you are a fan of superheroes, it can be tough to pick a favorite. But this week, Spider-Man seems to be the superhero of choice in our household. In our living room, there is a small space behind our love seat that is a perfect little hiding place for my son. When he plays superheroes, I can always find him back there plotting how to take over the world. I used to do the same thing as a kid, which makes it kind of fun to see him using his imagination to have…
  • Portland Makes the List of Top 50 Swim Cities In America

    Dan
    18 Jul 2014 | 12:42 pm
There isn’t a whole lot to do in our little farm town, which is both good and bad depending on your perspective. On one hand, it is nice to live away fro the city where it is much quieter and where traffic is never an issue. On the other hand, making plans for weekend activities usually involves a long drive. One of the neat things our town does have is an aquatic center which offers swim classes and recreational activities for the city’s residents. My son took swim lessons for a couple years and, as a parent, it was fun to watch him grow in his swimming abilities. I still…
