China is the world’s second largest country (Area wise). The country was originally inhabited by early humans between 250,000 and 2.24 million years ago. The beginning of the “Dynasty’s” or ruling emperors according to Chinese tradition was the first dynasty of Xia, which emerged around 2100 BCE. The Dynasty’s continued on until the last, the Qing dynasty, which lasted from 1644 until 1912, was the last imperial dynasty of China.      Although no cartoon character by any means, Fred Moore (Nee: Robert Fred Moore September 7th, 1911) with his unique design style and drawings helped the Disney Company bring to life the special appearance of the many characters we all love today. Fred Moore had little formal art training, but was a natural draftsman, much like Ub Iwerks. He almost single-handedly defined many of the Disney Cartoons. How did a man with almost no training get a job at Disney? The legend story goes that he walked into Walt’s office with some drawings he had made on some cardboard and said “I like to…

Happy 4th y’all! I hope everyone has enjoyed their day, and celebrated accordingly. I’ve spent a nice day home with my husband and pups, and then went to dinner with the hubby and my parents. It was good to spend the time together. There has been so much that has went on since I’ve last posted regularly, and I’m finally ready to catch y’all back up. I last posted regularly in April, though I essentially stopped in May. Now to explain. The dress is from Hot Topic Her Universe clothing line. My Avengers pin is from disney. A cute bow I bought at a geek fair and ballon purse from Sarahs curtesy skirts.    I headed to Disneyland to  get a picture with the famous super hero. He definitely approved of my outfit.   I even got one with Thor don’t ever tell him that Loki is your favorite :/ He was offended.

It was a Sunday evening when we pulled into the parking lot of the Super 8 on Katella Ave. Weary from the six and a half hour drive, we were relieved to have finally made it to our destination. We freshened up and went out to dinner at Johnny Rockets (a tradition started on our previous trip). The service was terrible, so we left as quickly as we could before any of us could get genuinely upset. Our plan had been to hit Downtown Disney once dinner was over, but two of the group wanted to stay behind in the hotel; the remaining two of us ventured out on the walk in the growing night. The…

Most of my friends already had plans (Three Day Weekend/Holiday/Family time/etc) so I decided to take myself to Disneyland. We were there to celebrate the occasion and report back to Theme Park Insider.Arriving at 9:30am we got in 30 minutes before the 10am opening time, using the "Ticket Extra" deal. At this point, only a fraction of the car park was filled. Once in we ran through the park in hopes of getting an early spot. We quickly realised however that they'd gated off the wing of the park containing the Baron ride (we suspect this was just for today). These inner gates only opened at 10am followed by a mass run of…

  • Storyland Asbury Park New Jersey

    3 Jul 2015 | 9:03 am
The first thing that comes to mind when most people here Asbury Park, New Jersey is Bruce Springsteen and beach boardwalk. However in the 1960s, it was home to a small Fairy Tale and Western park called Storyland Village. The park closed in the late 1960s as far as I can tell and was redeveloped into a Sear's store. The park sold this small set of souvenir postcards featuring images of the various scenes from the park. I will let the postcard booklet describe each of the scenes found at this cute park. The sets and buildings were designed by cartoonist and illustrator Russell Patterson.

One of the coolest ticket booth signs is the sign for the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train Ticket booth. Another nice detail is the lantern shaped light at one end of the booth.

On the shores of the Rivers of America sat the Frontierland ticket booth for the steamboat Mark Twain. The booth has a great sign in the middle of a life ring with a gorgeous painting of the Mark Twain. I wonder if this was saved? The many different United States flags creates a very colorful and kinetic draw. This ticket booth was removed and the landing area for the dock has been opened up in the front.

It's a "Cavalcade of Mediocrity"! Brought to you by Pepsodent tooth powder.I admit it - "mediocre" is too harsh to describe this pretty, pastoral scene. In fact, the more I look at it, the more I am inclined to give it a thumb's up. I think our photographer was at the Indian Village, near the location where the "Golden Bear Lodge" (now known as the "Hungry Bear" restaurant) would eventually go. OK, this one is mediocre. The color is weird, and there isn't much to see. I'm going back to bed.

It's an entirely new concept in family entertainment, yo. This was one of the very first pieces of Disneyland paper ephemera that I acquired, and I still think it is neat. • More From July, 1958

    2 Jul 2015 | 12:01 am
Today's first photo is a beauty, featuring the brand-new Columbia sailing ship. Doesn't it look great? Back when I scanned this, I experimented with some different settings, and the colors have a softer, almost "silvery" quality compared to most of my other scans. I really like it, but occasionally some weird things would happen in the darker areas. So... I've gone back to my old settings.I love the glimpse of people over on Tom Sawyer Island, and the canoes, mostly obscured by rushes. Now we've left Frontierland and moved on to Fantasyland. The old "medieval" façades are so great; I…
  • Walt Disney World, November 1974

    1 Jul 2015 | 12:01 am
I have a small group of Walt Disney World slides from November, 1974; that's pretty early in the life of The Magic Kingdom! This first one is a mystery to me; where are we? You can see the spires of Cinderella Castle in the distance. To our right is, perhaps, a Monorail station? Or the Transportation and Ticket Center? You sure see lots of topiaries in older photos of WDW, are they still as prevalent? That's four questions in one paragraph, which feels so wrong. I should just make up "facts" - if I sound like I know what I'm talking about, nobody will question me.I almost used Photoshop…

First of all, happy 4th of July everyone! Even though this year Disneyland will not be showing the Celebrate America fireworks this year in lieu of Disneyland Forever, I thought it would be a cool idea when they do show it to have a bald eagle flying over the castle near the beginning and the finale of the show on the wire that Tinker Bell normally flies. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Tinker Bell performer also Dumbo in Magical? It could work, having the Tinker Bell performer inside an eagle costume.

OK, we (the US) have 6 parks and we played a big role in your 2 parks, but many think you've improved upon Disney parks. You have disciplined, outstanding employees. We have free spirits. You have Duffy. He have Hope Solo. So based just on what we know about Disney, who will win the World Cup on Sunday at 4pm, Pacific time?

I started a thread asking if people liked Paris' Ratatouille or Tokyo's Pooh more. Someone suggested I include Mystic Manor, so I'm asking this here in the Hong Kong section. Of course, if you've also ridden Ratatouille, please share your estimation of that too.

It has been a week of celebration for our little family. Finally the day arrived, when we could tell our gorgeous boy that we were whisking him off to DisneyLand to celebrate his 4th birthday. Excitement beyond belief. And the outburst on the airplane when the reality hit was the sweetest! By the end of the flight I think everyone within a few rows was aware that it was his birthday! How cute are these cupcakes… And so, here are the things I have loved this week… Read With being away and then catching up on work and sleep I have only managed to read my magazines on the flights. I think it’s about the right time to start posting my “French” series, beginning with the happiest place on Earth, Disneyland Paris… +35 degrees on our car’s dashboard. Crowds of crying, screaming or dying of laughter kids. Longest lines on the planet. However, none of these matter because the moment you enter the park, you find yourself in the world of magic, miracles and dreams. Disneyland is not for the weak ones. Put on your linen shorts and shirt, grab your backpack and prepare yourself for the heat, queues and a sea of tourists. However, it is all worth…

Years ago, before Facebook, there were chat groups on Yahoo that I followed. One in particular held my interest because it was about a topic that I love. A topic that got me excited and a topic that occupied my mind many times throughout the day. There, I met friends who shared the same interest and passion for anything related to Disney. They understood. It was in the fall of 2008, however, that a new spark was ignited. One of my friends in the chat group announced that she made it on the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, now known as the Disney Parks Moms Panel. So I went to the website to…

We have opted to use the French “Buy-Back” program from USA and Canadian citizens. This entails “Leasing” and car (for 17-days or more) from a French car company. At the end of you “Lease” they buy the car back. French people pay a 20% tax on new cars. USA and Canadian citizens don’t. So, they have come up with a way for French people to buy almost new cars and therefore not have to pay the tax. They “lease” them…

The Disney park currently known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been the much maligned “not-a-full-day-park” for years and years now. It usually comes in 3rd or 4th place, depending on whether the person choosing enjoys Disney’s Animal Kingdom or not. I have personally defended Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the past, based on the memories and the hope it once held, and the potential future I thought it could enjoy. However, as of late, much like the former EPCOT Center, DHS has been slowly cannibalizing itself in the name of “progress” and throwing…

As a life-long Disney fan, I think we’d all like to think this is just how Dick Van Dyke is on a daily basis (maybe without the live band, but you get the idea). Some people are just born happy and what makes them happiest, is spreading joy to others. • Disney and Weddings and Newbies… OH MY !

    Genevieve P. (NDW#100)
    3 Jul 2015 | 2:00 pm
I have to confess I have two major obsessions; Disney and Weddings. If I’m not touring the theme parks, I can be found searching the web for the newest wedding trends. When I saw Disney Driven Life was searching for a new wedding contributor, my mind almost exploded. After all, I have been writing professionally about weddings and Disney separately for years. The idea of getting to combine them makes me so excited. When I got married, I seriously considered wearing Mickey Ears down the aisle. It didn’t matter to me I was getting married in one of North America’s largest and most…

  • Liberty Tree Tavern – An All-American Choice

    Stephanie M. (NDM#544)
    2 Jul 2015 | 2:00 pm
Liberty Tree Tavern is a sit down restaurant at Walt Disney World Resort. It is located in Magic Kingdom Park in Liberty Square. Liberty Square transports park guests to Colonial America with its distinctive architectural elements. Keeping with the theme, the restaurant is divided into rooms named after famous figures from the Revolutionary period such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Standing in front of the restaurant is Magic Kingdom Park’s own Liberty Tree, which is representative of “liberty trees” that became rallying points for colonists during the…

Inspired by a photo of a completed 25th anniversary Cinderella Castle from Jimmy of the Disney Nerds Podcast that was shared on our Facebook group, I had to look for my own. We visited Magic Kingdom in early 1996, as they were constructing the Castle Cake. It was extremely bizarre to see the castle halfway transformed. It definitely made for awkward family photos! It also makes you wonder, as we have witnessed current construction, would we ever see the castle in a half transformed state in this day and age? I believe that the castle would be behind scrims, or maybe even walls, as…

Like most readers of the WDW Radio Blog, Disney has played a major role in my life. In my 18 years of existence, I have traveled to Walt Disney World three times. As a joint graduation present for me, and a celebration of my Mom’s (undisclosed age) birthday, I am going to Disneyland Resort Paris. While Disney World and Disneyland are both closer to my home in Massachusetts, the opportunity to travel abroad and visit one of Disney’s non-American based resorts a is something I do not take for granted. That being said, I want to share my experience in Europe (or any continent that…

By Derek Burgan This week’s SATURDAY SIX is a Salute to All Nations (But Mostly America). July 4th weekend brings out the patriotism in all of us, and nothing is more American than our favorite theme parks. Created with the opening of Disneyland in 1955, theme parks — along with comic books and jazz music — are one of the rare forms of art that we in the USA have given to the citizens of Earth. Thankfully, they are all so good that the world forgives us for everything else we’ve given them such as Zima, reality television, and the KFC Double Down. So raise Old Glory up…

I had debated whether or not to try out the Disney Cruise Line for years, as I am one of those people who likes to go 12 hours straight at Disney World and wasn’t sure if I could handle being confined to a single ship. But after hearing so many glowing reports about the Disney Cruise Line from other Disney fans, I decided to take the plunge with a 3-Night Bahamian Cruise on the Disney Dream with stops in Nassau and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. • Does Your Child Need Advanced Potty Training?

    21 Jun 2015 | 12:22 pm
When you have a little one, there are plenty of reassurances that things get easier when they are potty-trained. Changing diapers is the hard part, they tell you. The big secret that no one tells you is that the messes don’t end just because your child is out of diapers. Advanced potty training is a necessity. I came to the conclusion that advanced potty training was a thing after I had to explain to my son (for the millionth time) the importance of wiping after using the bathroom. The parenting books make you believe that once your child knows how to sit and flush they will never need…

But in the afternoon, when the temperatures reach their peak, there is no better place to be than indoors watching a movie. For a place that is rooted in nostalgia, they seem to always have something new to try. For this milestone year, the Disneyland Resort has a new evening parade, fireworks show, and a new water show that all look pretty amazing.

It isn’t often that parents get to relax and indulge a little. Our children’s needs come first, which means weekends are often spent at the zoo, date nights are rare, and the idea of a couple’s getaway sounds exotic. As much as we love our children, we still need to pamper ourselves once in a while. If you live in the greater Seattle area, getting away for a wine tasting weekend is easier than you might expect. I spent a few days exploring Walla Walla, Washington, thanks to Buick, and was pleasantly surprised by the small town and wine country that is just a short distance away. Getting…
